Innovative Lighting 560-1111-7 White LED Battery Navigation Bow Light Review

Only one complaint and that is the clamp. Only one screw so the unit can and does turn sideways. The LED lights make the battery last a long time and are bright enough to meet the "laws". Nice solution without running wires around the boat. Especially if you only need night lighting once or twice a year.

Great - especially for the price, it seems to work fine and it's handy to be able to charge your unit in some place other than the car and then use the unit inside a hotel room or house. My only frustration is that the charger does not show when the unit is fully charged, like having its' green light turn off or give me an idea in some instructions how long a full charge will take. However since I am using this for the Magellan 1340 that fault might also lie within the Magellan. I wish the information that the unit cannot be overcharged was listed in an instruction sheet that should be included .

December, 2008 There are a lot of features in this box and they all work well.
I have had this radio for about a day, and played with most of its features while wiring it up into the dashboard of a motorhome. This is simply the most bang for the buck available with all of the features that were desired... Navigation, Rear View Monitor, CD/DVD/VCD, AM/FM, Bluetooth and external Video input from another device.
The Radio interface is very basic. The radio is simply an AM/FM radio with no display of the INFO or data that is broadcast - and it is not an HD radio. But it has excellent quality audio played through the speakers on both the AM and FM bands. The display simply displays the 6 frequencies that have been programmed for that particular band.
The Bluetooth interface works well. If you play music on a streaming device, it will play through the radio's speakers. And you can make and receive calls through your Bluetooth phone.
GPS system works very well, as I had just plugged in the antenna, and as soon as I brought up the GPS, it showed exactly where I was on the map. I have not used it for navigation yet, but there are other reviews online that indicate the navigation software is adequate.
There are external jacks for displaying the DVD video and other screens on an external monitor and separate 4 channel audio outputs as well. The video and front R/L audio drive a larger monitor elsewhere in the RV.
The reverse video input works well. All you need to do it hook one of the wires in the supplied wiring harness up to the reverse light wire on your vehicle, and whenever you put your vehicle into reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear video input, while continuing to play whatever audio source you were playing. If you have purchased and wired a reverse video camera on the back of your vehicle, you can always see what is behind you.
When playing DVDs, it is easy to step though the various sound tracks and other DVD features.
The secondary SD slot works with only older style SD cards with capacities up to 4GB. MP3s and videos can be on the SD cards or burned onto CDs or DVDs and played on this system.
It would be nice if there were some technical user type interface into the operating system of this box, but no information can be easily found on the internet. I would anticipate very little product support if you get into trouble with this box. It is better for the do-it-yourself types who want a lot of features and can support themselves. If you are that type, then you can save over $400 with this versus a comparable product with a name brand. There are some very similar products listed on EBay, directly from China. The screen shots are very similar to the XOVision with minute differences in each screen, but the button placement, SD card slots and the way the video screen folds down are all similar.

Garmin zumo 660 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Motorcycle Navigator Review

Garmin zumo 660 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Motorcycle Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a Zumo 550 and it was with interest that I helped a friend install his Zumo 660. After taking two road trips in the car and working with the 660 I have some comparisons to make to my 550.
Let me predicate my review as it is based on the 660 Firmware update 3.20 that came out towards the end of July of 2009.
1. The 660 doesn't display all street names when browsing the map. I found my friends house using where to? button and it showed the house but none of the street names (including his street name) surrounding his house. The zoom level didn't matter.
2. Won't follow the route you specify in MapSource custom route download. The 660 will recalculate the route you download so there is no guarantee that the route you enter on your computer will be followed by the 660. You have to really get into the habit of using waypoints.
3. Construction of the 660 is like a nuvi. In fact, I think it is a modified nuvi. The USB connection on the 660 can only be accessed by removing the battery cover (which then causes an annoying message to appear that the battery cover is off) There is no tether for the cover, so if you loose it, guess what? All GPS functions are disabled! The 660 only works in GPS mode with the battery cover attached. The screen feels like soft plastic when you touch it. In comparison, the USB connection on the 550 is behind a hinged door, and it doesn't matter if the door is open or closed. So even if you break the door, the 550 still operates as a GPS. The 550's screen feels more like glass to me. In my opinion - for fit and finish - the 550 is built like a brick house, the 660 - not so much.
4. The 660 doesn't come with a 120v charger adapter like the 550 does. Both the 660 and the 550 will recharge with the USB connection but if you are planning a trip with your 660, you have a limited amount of battery power because if you plug in the USB cable to recharge it - it enters the USB Mass Storage Mode. The 550 will operate as a GPS plugged into a 12v source (cradle in car or bike) or the 120v adapter (like at home or your hotel room.)
5. The 660 utilizes a micro-sd card. Geeze! have you seen how small these are? About the size of your pinky fingernail. The 550 uses a easy-to-handle standard SD card. The SD card in the 550 can be plugged into your pc's card slot and read like a disk drive. Easy and convenient to do. The micro-sd card is so darn small, and inconvenient to get to, (you have to remove the 660's battery to get to it) it's hardly worth the trouble.
6. Never saw the lane change notice feature. Apparently none of the freeway interchanges we went through were programmed into the 660.
7. Even at maximum volume in the car, the 660's internal speaker was barely audible. This is a serious problem. You have to have all other music in the car off in order to hear the 660 through its internal speaker when using the car mounting. The external speaker in the 550's auto mounting gives you plenty of volume and can be heard over other noises in the car.
8. 660 doesn't have the screen change/flip/page button like the 550. You can toggle between screens by hitting the box button on the side of the 550 repeatedly. I find that a very useful way to navigate around the system. I could not find an equivalent key or process on the 660 to do the same thing.
9. On the 550 - touching the turn in xx miles portion of the nav map screen, the unit repeats the last verbal instructions again. I could not find an equivalent key or process on the 660 do do this simple task.
10. It may not matter to you, but the 660 is not integrated to work with XM radio and weather. One of the few things it doesnt support. The 550 will support XM and Weather if you get the GPX 30 antenna receiver and pay the subscription service.
CONCLUSION:
I still feel that after handling both units, the 550 is a true motorcyclists GPS, it does everything I ask of it. The 660 can be, but as stated elsewhere, it got released before all the bugs were worked out of it. It needs work.
It is interesting to me that Garmin is playing the field with the 660, the 550 is still a cataloged product, and is still for sale at most dealers. I don't know if they plan to phase out the 550 if and when more 660's are sold.
I do know that I'm very happy with my 550 for now and will watch Garmin to see what firmware updates they provide to address the shortcomings for the 660.
As of 07-15-2009 Amazon does not have this unit listed for sale as new. There is only one seller of this unit and it is listed as refurbished.
As of 7-31-2009 Amazon has taken this item out of the product catalog. It is not currently available.

Insignia NS-CNV43 - GPS receiver - automotive Review

Insignia NS-CNV43 - GPS receiver - automotive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With its impressive features, this PND could have been a winner, but sadly, it is not. The people who conjured up the specs had a good sense of the pain points that users experience with the current crop of GPS devices, and tried to address some of them. Thus, they added internet connectivity through an inbuilt cellphone data service (free for the first 12 months) to provide Google POI search, live traffic, fuel prices, movie listings, weather and even Twitter capability. The device can also receive emails containing routes configured on Google Maps or Mapquest. Combined with the device's inbuilt bluetooth connectivity, these features potentially make for a very versatile and capable GPS unit. Sadly, at this point in time, it is more potential, less reality.
The reality view shows a product that performs inadequately on many levels. First, the hardware: though the device looks slick and feels rugged, its touch screen is insensitive and requires considerable force to press on. After a while, this can be quite irritating. Satellite acquisition is quite fast from a stationary position, though excruciatingly slow from a moving vehicle. Worse, the unit's processor is much too slow, leading to long boot up times, and often significant delays in searching, calculating, and recalculating. For people who are already used to reasonably fast Garmin and Tom Tom devices, this one will get the hackles up a bit. The unit's core navigation capabilities also leave something to be desired. Address search is easy, but for some reason the unit can't find all to many addresses even though it uses the same Navteq maps as Garmin. There is the option of searching for intersections, but many intersections do not show up on search, making the feature of limited utility. The inbuilt POI database is supposed to have 2 million addresses, though I could not find any of the main POIs I was looking for in many categories. Additionally, there is no search function for the POI database, which makes the database quite useless really. Google search via the connected service is good, though every now and then the connection to the servers can't be established, and you have to try again. Using Google search while in motion makes the search and download slower for some reason.
Routing is done with a slight difference on this unit: you are required to select from 3 routing options for each destination (thus adding one additional step in the process) , though 2 of the 3 options are usually much longer or completely illogical. Even the best option is not always the same route as you'd get on a Garmin or Tom Tom, or on Google Maps - sometimes it is longer and slower. The option of importing a route from Google Maps via the email function is buggy - the imported route gets garbled and truncated arbitrarily, making this a useless feature. The auto zoom function is not well implemented: if your turn is over a mile away, the route trace gets reduced to a barely visible squiggle at the bottom of the screen, while the rest of the screen shows a map with very little detail. Closer to your turn, the view switches to oom in and the route trace becomes much bigger (though still occupying only a fraction of the screen) and can show several turns on the screen all together, which gives a good sense of your upcoming manoeuvers. This can be seen as a benefit or a distraction depending on your taste, but I like it. At this zoom level, the surrounding map also shows much more detail than Ive seen on other GPS units, giving a much better sense of the neighborhood than you'd get on a Garmin or Tom Tom. Turn by turn voice guidance is preceded by a ding ( a la Magellan), and comes 3 times before the actual turn, though voice clarity is not great and you can easily mistake a "turn left" for a "turn right" if you are not looking at the screen. Like Garmin GPS and unlike Tom Tom, this unit tells you which side of the road your destination is on, which is a definite plus. A big minus for a unit with as many features as this one is the absence of lane guidance.
Bluetooth is not well done on this unit. I struggled to pair the unit with my Motorola phone (it took multiple attempts before it connected), and every time I shut the unit down and started up again, it would no longer recognize my phone, and I had to go through the pairing process again. There is no phone book on the unit and you can't download your contacts from your cell phone to your GPS. The handsfree function is adequate, but sound quality is quite metallic and noisy.
All in all this PND was well conceived (kudos for that) but implemented poorly and needs to go back to engineering for a make over.

Cobra XRS 9965 15 Band Radar and Laser Detector Review

Cobra XRS 9965 15 Band Radar and Laser Detector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just upgraded to the 9965 from the 9950. With the touch screen I have notices the screen display is not as bright and crisp as the older model 9950. Also with the sun coming in over the front of the car you can not read the screen at all, it gets washed out. You will need to rely on the voice and tone alerts. The screen should have been made with better shielding to block the sun out. The other reason I like the older model is that the 9950 had an electronic compass the new one you need to purchase the 9970 with the gps locator to get the compass. Really miss having the compass. Should not have been taken out. When you look at the screen you have a blank center where the compass used to be. Would recommend going back to the 9950 or purchase the xrs9945. Hope this helps everyone when considering purchasing the new touch screen cobra radar detector.

Navman iCN 510 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Navman iCN 510 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this NAVMAN icn510 at a different online retailer for $350 (starts with outpost. something :-). I generally make my purchases at Amazon.com - but this time Amazon.com could not beat the price I got for this gadget. I also usually rely on Amazon.com to read reviews of a product. Since I have been helped by other peoples reviews before, I thought it is my time to pay back. Hence I am writing this one. This is my first ever review. So please bear with me if I do not do a good job of it.
Please also buy a minimum of 512MB SD or MMC card. I already had a 512MB SD card. I was able to install about 7 states before it filled up (Texas alone is approx 100MB!). So make sure you buy an SD card with this purchase. I would recommend 1GB. But that is your call. After I unpacked the receiver, I then let it charge for about 2 hours - before the green light came on indicating that it was fully charged. Then I installed the Navman Desktop software on my PC and then when it asked me to connect the iCN510, it was able to communicate with it with no problems. Remember to turn on the power (by sliding the Battery Switch) on the back of the device with the stylus before you plug it to your PC. Then I updated the Desktop and the iCN510 software with the latest patches from Navman's web site. Loading of the maps were slow - it takes approx. 5-10 minutes per map - so my advice is, you select all the maps that you want installed, then press copy to SD card and go do something else. Usually I have seen on my cameras and camcorders if you have the screen turned out, it drains the batteries pretty quickly. It was not the case here. After about 3 hours of usage - with the Display turned on - I noticed that batteries were about 65% full. I was impressed with that. During the installation, the Display screen was on all the time - with an USB connection animation. You do not see any map loading status updates on the device - only on your Desktops. After the installation, while inside the house itself, it was able to receive the GPS satellite signals and showed my location. That was good too. Voice is loud and clear. Although this is supposed to be a touchscreen device, a number of items on the screen does not respond to the stylus. You have to use its circular wheel to navigate and press the center of the circular wheel to get it to work as Enter/Return button. It also comes with all accessories you need to mount in the car along with car charger. It comes with a quick reference guide. But a detailed user manual is only available as a PDF. You may print one out at your discretion.
Here is the reason why I am giving this device 3 stars instead of 5. I purchased this product in December 2004. The maps on this device is dated March 2003. Called Customer service - which by the way will take you directly to voice mail where you would leave a voice mail. I did and I did not expect to hear from them. But 30 minutes later somebody did call back. When I talked to him, he said NAVMAN does not have the latest maps for this device. And even when it comes out, you will have to pay to get the latest maps on it. What the .....??? That was very disappointing. He said it will be atleast 8-12 months before they release their next updates. He understood my point but said he was helpless and could not change company's policies. I implored him to let his supervisors or anybody higher up that that is wrong. He said he will. So, I am looking at another $99 to get the updates. That was not good news. So beware of this before you buy this product. You also cannot register the product. I asked the customer rep. to see if I can register so that I may receive a discount coupon when I get ready to update the software. He said they discontinued the registration process. And that there are no plans to get customers data into their database.
But the fact is I paid $350 - which is pretty cheap. That is why I am seriously considering not sending this back. Otherwise it would have been returned by now.

I have been testing few Navigation Systems in the last few weeks, Pioneer Avics2 Portable Gps Navigation System, has really impressed me with its performance.
This Slim (1.7cm. or 0.7 inches), light Weight (180 Grams or 6.35 ounces) Navigation System is very easy to use whether in the car or out side the car; if like to go hiking, biking or exploring the down town of any city that you are not familiar with.
The Mp3 and the loud speakers give you added enjoyment while hiking or biking, but watch out for the battery.
The maps and other information about the Points of Interest (POI) are very accurate and load almost immediately, and the route updating is almost instantaneously.
The TeleAtlas map database covers the continental United States with Alaska and Hawaii in addition to Canada.
The 3D Map View gives a detailed view of your location and the route ahead, and you can easily zoom in or out.
Full Color TFT 3.5-inch touch screen interface, provides simple operation, in addition, maps and menus are easy-to-read on the large, anti-glare screen.
Pioneer Avics2 Portable Gps Navigation System features also a Night Display option, with Brightness Control of 8 Levels, and a built in Microphone. This compact GPS unit also features Bluetooth technology for hands-free cell phone operation while driving, which is a great blessing for safety.
The only con in my opinion is the battery life, which is about 4 hours. If you are planning to go hiking or biking for more than 4 hours, you better keep that in mind, but in the car there is no problem, as you can use a car charger which comes with the Pioneer Avics2 Portable Gps Navigation System.

VR3 GPS Navigation Wireless Rear View Camera 4.3" Inch Review

I bought my unit last year to use in my SUV, an inexpensive way to replace a much more expensive system that came built in.
Unfortunately, although it does operate, every time that I pass anyone who has a similar type camera transmitting, the system locks up and won't do anything until I actually hit the reset button and then go through the process of reprogramming settings. This also happens just driving by certain businesses that have security cameras that it picks up. Today, I actually saw a young boy getting a haircut while sitting at an intersection. Of course, the GPS doesn't work when the camera is active.
It does keep your favorites which helps, but the other settings get reset to default.
It does have an excellent back up view when in reverse, but it's more like an ordinary camera with a panoramic view, than specifically a "rear view" camera with the grid lines that most have. Still, gives a great view in daytime and it's just a little bit of a grainy picture at night.
Extras: After loading a 2G MMC/flash memory card, it worked with the programs, but kept giving messages of needing more memory for the GPS system & wanted to use my memory card. Questionable at best, I expected the unit to at least operate on it's own built in storage and that bothers me. It does for the most part, and no mention when the card isn't installed.
GPS: Quickly boots up & identifies the location. Fairly good routing, choices are limited and a bit more trouble than getting used to a TomTom, or for that matter, my Magellan Roadmate. You can still get downloaded voices & color schemes, but the speaker isn't well designed apparently as it sounds very scratchy for most instructions and especially if you try to listen to any good music on it.
I got mine for less than 100.00, so I really can't complain. I am spending the big bucks though-to get the OEM system completed, then I'll probably use my TomTom again or the Magellan Roadmate 700 that I still have. I only bought this for the B/U camera function and didn't want 2 units.
Good luck whichever way you go.

I have had this system installed now for about 2 weeks and it works great! The installation manual could be more detailed but if you can read a basic wiring diagram you will have no problems installing it yourself. It also takes a bit of time to get a handle on the user interface. As with using an amp and subwoofers: you must turn on the pre-amp output in one menu and then activate the subwoofers in another menu. But after glancing at the user manual all was explained. It has dual zone capability for another screen and can play the tuner in front of the car and a DVD in the back if desired. There is no seperate speed sensor with this unit just a cool magnetic antenna that works great basically anywhere it is located in the vehicle (I have T-tops) Location, speed and ETA are dead on! This system also looks for a ground connection (not a logical transition) on the "park," wire in order to use the DVD function. Overall a great working and looking system for a great price.

Garmin nüvi 250W 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin nüvi 250W 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Garmin nuvi 250W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator is my first GPS unit. Having now owned it for several days, and with my wife and me putting it through its paces, I can definitely and honestly say that it is an excellent unit, one of which Garmin should be proud.
It is considered to be a "basic" GPS device.
This unit does the job, does it very well, and does it very simply.
It gets you there and it gets you back! You won't ever be lost when you use this device.
That is the reason for which you purchase an item such as this. This particular unit functions much like its competition except that, from what I have read, it really works much better than most of them. And from my own experience with it I can say that I could not be more satisfied.
The nuvi 250W (as well as the nuvi 250) come pre-loaded with maps of all of North America, including Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. The nuvi 200W (and the nuvi 200) have maps only for the "lower 48" states including Hawaii and Puerto Rico. While that may be sufficient for many (probably most) people, I think the 250W offers much more for a relatively small difference in price.
To add Canada and Alaska maps to the 200/200W costs more than the price difference between the 250/250W and the 200/200W. The choice of which device to buy, of course, depends on where you plan or may plan to travel. Otherwise, the 250/250W and the 200/200W function identically.
The wide screen of the "W" units is, in my opinion, not a frill but rather an extremely useful upgrade in terms of visibility and usefulness. You can see much more of the surrounding area and this can be of great help when you're in an unfamiliar place.
Its wide screen is very bright in daylight, does not wash out, and can be set to automatically dim at night. This auto-adjust feature works very well indeed and is really welcome. Once set, you need not adjust the brightness any further. The sound volume control is fully and easily adjustable; I personally have found that the best setting for me is 70%. This level can be heard clearly over my radio/CD that I may have playing without "blasting," so I have left it at that level.
Obviously, in only a few days of ownership, I have not been able to explore all its capabilities, but I have found the Garmin web site to be of great help. (If you don't already know the URL of Garmin's site, just do a search. For some reason Amazon does not allow the URL to be posted here.) There is a wealth of information there. I was even able to update my firmware from version 2.60 (supplied) to the latest version 2.90. This was quite easy to do. (Of course, to do this you need a 6ft USBa/mini B Device USBa To Mini B 2.0 Compatible (#27005) or similar which, incredibly and disappointingly, Garmin does not include in the package. This particular cable, at Amazon's very low price, is well-worth buying, even if only as a spare. However, you may have one or more of these cables from other applications lying about your house, as I do.)
Garmin's site supports Apple Macintosh computers as well as Windows computers.
Entering addresses, saving them to if desired, and actually driving to a selected location is straightforward. I found the directions selected to be quite accurate. So far, I have tested the unit only locally and on locations known to me. But in every case it took me the same way that I would have gone myself. Distances tested have been up to about 20 miles. This unit also features a bicycle mode and a pedestrian mode, but I have tried neither as yet. (I understand that if you are parked in a crowded parking lot, you can switch to the pedestrian mode, mark the location of your automobile, and, after you are finished shopping or whatever, the unit will walk you right back to your car!)
I tried the function a couple of times, just for testing, and it worked flawlessly. The function also worked flawlessly.
If you miss an indicated turn, which I did deliberately, the device recalculates extremely rapidly. I am amazed as to how well it works in this regard.
Of course, NO GPS device is a substitute for local knowledge. None of them can know of, for example, closed roads, seasonally affected roads, or roads under construction. None can know that a "back road route" to a place which, even though slightly longer in mileage, avoids heavy local traffic, during local rush hour, for example, and so is actually much shorter in time.
Sometimes you may still have to ask!
But, in general, these devices, and this one in particular with its superb detouring ability, function very well indeed. Note that there is no limit on the number of times you can press . If you feel that the unit is taking you a way on which you do not want to travel, merely press the button again.
The number and extent of the pre-loaded "Points of Interest" is just staggering! There are 6,000,000(!) of them! I just can't imagine anyone not being able to find just what he is looking for! AND, additional customized points of interest can be added quickly and easily and mostly for free (see Garmin's site for information). This is amazing!
If you are moving to a new town, or are visiting an unfamiliar place, this "Points of Interest" function will show you just about every store, business, or place of entertainment you could desire. The unit can even indicate when you are near a "Point of Interest" which is contained within or programmed into its memory.
This unit also points out "speed zones" - both visually and audibly. The usefulness of this particular feature in unfamiliar locations goes without saying!
Unfortunately, the low price currently being charged precludes Garmin from supplying as standard certain items, in addition to the USB cable mentioned above, which, in my opinion, are necessary. While this may seem as though it's annoying "nickel-and-diming" (and it is!) the additional necessary items are, fortunately, not very expensive.
These are the several optional accessories that I should recommend (I purchased them all): the first two are the Garmin Portable Friction Mount for Nuvi, StreetPilot I Series & C530, C550 (010-10908-00) (it is much, much better than the included window-mount suction cup - believe me, this "bean-bag" is a superb item - and it is mandatory in certain states), and the Garmin Carrying Case for Nuvi 660 (010-10823-01) (which I really wish were supplied as standard).
[Please note that, instead of Garmin's own carrying case, I now recommend the AmazonBasics Carrying Case for Portable GPS Units (Black) which is constructed just as well, perhaps better, than Garmin's own and is less expensive.]
Amazon carries both of these items as well as the unit itself and this season I have found their prices to be better than that of any other retailer. Their shipping service is top-notch as well.
There are two other accessories I recommend: 1) do NOT buy an AC Adapter for this unit; it is very expensive. Instead, buy an "AC Travel Charger with 12V Accessory Outlet" (formerly available from Amazon but now only available from PartsExpresscom); this alone will be all you need to allow the DC Power Adapter that comes with the unit to be used from any AC source. Merely navigate to PartsExpress' web site and enter the above description (in quotes) into the search box (without the quotation marks, of course). It is far less expensive (only $6.78) than an AC Adapter, and, of course, can be used with other DC-powered items as well. And 2) buy a soft side (padded) lunch box or fishing tackle box (I bought a cheap one at Wal-Mart) of suitable size to store the various accessories. This can be left in the trunk of your car out of sight when the GPS is not in use.
Obviously, you should NEVER - NEVER! -leave the unit itself anywhere in your car, at ANY time when the car is parked and you're not there, even if it's hidden away.
And you should NEVER - NEVER! - leave ANY of the attachments or accessories visible in your car when it is is parked.
In fact, you should NEVER leave any clue whatsoever that you have one of these devices. Thieves can be very clever! ALWAYS take the unit with you when you leave your car - every time!
It is probably safe to leave just the accessories as long as they are all carefully hidden away in the trunk or otherwise camouflaged (and no one has seen you hide them or place the items in your trunk! Be VERY careful!). I have heard that thieves even look for suction-cup marks on the windshield and, if they see one, they break into your car, figuring that you have a GPS device hidden in your glove box! GPS units are today's "hot" item to steal and sell.
You must employ common sense when using one of these devices, at least at the present time. You also want to make your car less "inviting" to thieves.
As a further aid in making theft somewhat less attractive, this Garmin unit has a feature that I really like - a security feature. One sets a 4-digit PIN AND sets this up at any particular desired location (generally your home). When you start up the unit, if you are at your starting point, the unit comes on automatically. If you are at any...Read more›

The widescreen version of Garmin's nuvi 250 offers a large, easy-to-read screen (4.3 inches diagonally to the nuvi 250s 3.5 inches) at an attractive price point. Like its smaller sibling, the 250W comes with preloaded maps for the continental U.S., Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada and Alaska. If all you don't need Canada and Alaska, you can get the nuvi 200W at a lower pirce. If you want maps for Europe, you'll need to go with the smallernuvi 270, or you can purchase a set of European maps on SD Card or CD-Rom. While it doesn't have some of the more sophisticated features of higher-end nuvis, it does, like all nuvi 200-series members, offer a rock-solid navigation experience with an easy-to-use colorful touchscreen, 6 million points of interest (POI)s, and an ultra-slim design.
See More of What's Around The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Smart, Powerful Design The nuvi 250W is built with a high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. All this is wrapped up in a package that measures 4.8 x 2.9 x 0.8 inches (W x H x D) and weighs just 6.6 ounces. The nuvi display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use.

Navigate with Ease nuvi 250W comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty POI database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nuvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. In addition, nuvi 250W accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.

Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin Auto Navigation Kit Review

The Auto Navigation Kit is a must-have accessory to be able to use the iQue while driving. The mount is extremely flexible for orienting the unit for best viewing. I have used it on three different dashboards without any problems. The non-slip base keeps its grip even in hard maneuvers. The speaker that is built into the power cord is clear and it can be turned up to a high volume to overcome road noise. I made a sunscreen hood to reduce the glare on the iQue screen using matte black cardboard and Velcro. I would consider this a must-have accessory too.

TomTom XL 350TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition) Review

TomTom XL 350TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic and Maps Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
****Update****
I changed my review of this GPS from five stars down to three stars for a few different reasons and I ended up taking the GPS unit back to the place I purchased it from (it was very hard to walk away from the $129 sale price) and purchased the TomTom XL340 TM.
The main reason I traded this unit in for a new one was the user interface. I completely understand that TomTom wants to create a simple user interface geared towards the 80% of people who want a simple and easy to understand GPS unit. On this, the XL 350 TM performs exceptionally well. However, if you want to really customize the GPS to do things for you, then you are out of luck because you cannot update very manypreferences in the unit. I like to tinker with the GPS unit and in the end I want ultimate control over what is on the screen and what information I can or cannot get. The 350 TM does not give you ANY leeway to set up the GPS in the exact way you want. If you see the words "Easy Menu" on the box and you like to have control over everything the GPS displays then the unit will not be for you. If you want simple and easy-to-understand-out-of-the-box performance, then this GPS will work fine.
The XL 340TM GPS uses the old menu system from TomTom. I ended up paying $60 more for this GPS but it was important to me to be able to customize the menu system. This unit also has lifetime maps and traffic and this was my main reason for buying a new GPS. Instead of two options on the main screen, I have ten. Under the preferences menu this unit lets me check seven different boxes under the Safety Preferences menu. Additionally there are two other sub-screens under this that let me set when I am driving on the wrong side of the road and to choose if I ever want the map display shut off. I can also change the information displayed on the status bar and on the 350 I could not. There was no compass function that I could see on the 350 that is available here. It also lets me set up different information on the Quick Menu preferences and this option was not available on the 350 at all. It also lets me check off about 15 different items under planning preferences including things like avoiding toll roads, avoiding ferries, plan routes by fastest times, shortest routes, avoiding freeways etc. Under Advanced Preferences it lets you select options like displaying street names, house numbers before street names, lane images etc. You can also prepare routes on this unit and also build an itinerary including waypoints.
I also sent an email to the TomTom support team asking if there was anyway I could get and use the old menu system they used and was told that is was not possible. The problem with this response? It took TomTom over a week to answer my question. That seems like a very long response time and is another reason I took one more star off of my rating.
Overall the 350 was a nice unit and easy to use, it simply did not allow me to customize the GPS like I wanted to.
*****Update over*****
I travel a lot for my job and have used an older model Mio GPS unit to get me to my destinations. The Mio worked fine for the most part, but the last time I went to a new city the maps were very old and out of date. I decided it was time to upgrade to a new GPS unit and researched Garmin and TomToms because they are the two biggest players in the market. In the end, the lifetime traffic and lifetime map upgrades pushed me towards the TomTom XL 350 TM, a model that just came out at the end of May 2010.
In my research for a new GPS it seems that people either liked Garmin or the TomTom because of the interface. People usually had a strong bias for one or the other. The interface did not matter to me as much as what I could get for my money. I seriously looked at the Garmin nuvi 780 because this is a top-of-the-line Garmin, albeit a discontinued model, and Amazon is selling it for 74% off the original price. For the money it seemed like a fantastic deal except for two things. This unit uses MSN Direct content for traffic and you have to pay a subscription fee after the trial period ends, and MSN is discontinuing this service at the beginning of 2011. This unit did not include lifetime updated maps, which is a big deal for someone buying a new GPS unit simply because the old one had maps in it that are getting obsolete.
Since lifetime maps were very important to me (without having to shell out $100 more for the upgrade) my choices were suddenly locked in on TomTom units. I researched their products and decided I was either going to get the XL 540 TM (the TM is lifetime traffic and maps) or the same unit but with a smaller screen size, the XL 340 TM. I decided I was going to go for the one with the 4.3" wide screen, the XL 340 TM, instead of the bigger 5" screen because I read that the 5" screen is cumbersome for the window mount to handle.
Well the best laid plans sometimes go astray because when I went into Best Buy they had the brand new XL 350 TM on sale for $169.99 when the regular price was $229.99. I bought the unit immediately beacuse I figured the unit was very similar if not an improvement over the XL 340 TM.
Here are my first impressions after using the TomTom XL 350 TM for two days.
1.The design is sleek with a crisp and clear screen. My old Mio looks like a clunky old refrigerator compared to the new TomTom.
2.I wish TomTom had an external memory card on these units. I have read people have had problem updating maps because they have run out of room on the unit. Since I read about it, I was expecting it, and ended up backing up my unit and then deleting the French and the Spanish language functions to free up space. This freed up about 30 mb on a 2 gb flash drive. TomTom could fix this issue by simply making the maps of Canada, the United States and Mexico separate. Anyway, the fix of deleting the French and Spanish speaking files worked well.
3.The instructions are very skimpy in the box. There are basically no instructions on how to set up and install the new software on the device. This was not a big deal for me because I researched the hell out of it, but for someone like my mom this would be a killer. I connected the device to my computer and found the setup program on the device and ran it.
4.When you first plug the unit into the computer it takes an hour and a half to download the new maps and the GPS fix software. After it downloads all the software it needs, then you install the TomTom Home software. This is not really installed on your machine, but rather it is an account set up on a web site and the software seems to reside there.
5.Once you install the Home software or set up an account, the icons in TomTom Home are very easy to understand and use. I performed a backup of my unit and then I deleted the Spanish and French language files from the unit. If TomTom would ever install Mexico, Canada and the United States separately then space would not be an issue because most sane people would never rent a car or drive in Mexico unless you lived there, and then if you did liver in Mexico you most likely would not need maps of Canada. This is a very small issue but one that could be fixed with minimal issues.
6.Once you perform the backup and delete you install the software upgrade to the TomTom. This did not take long at all, maybe 15 minutes.
7.The window unit is very different from the Mio. I like the looks of it because it looks elegant. It is a little awkward to use at first, but after you get used to it then it works as designed. My Mio had a linchpin system to hold the unit to the window unit and over time I lost the linchpin so the design there wasn't perfect. This design is like a hip joint, a ball in the socket, and although it moves stiff (I bet in order to keep the GPS unit still) it functions well and had no problems holding the unit on the window or dash. It is easy to unsnap the unit from the wondow mounting device so you can take the GPS unit with you instead of leaving it in the car.
8.The user interface on the GPS unit is simple and easy to use. It is very intuitive and when you fist turn it on there are pop-up balloons there to help guide you through the process. By playing around with it for a bit I became very adept at doing what I needed to get done for the GPS unit to function.
9.I like the graphics on this unit. The GPS fired up and found a signal within seconds (my old unit took up to a minute or so to lock onto a satellite). I typed in the address of where I wanted to go, it plotted a route for me, and I hit the done button to get the 3-D view map on the screen. From there it is easy because you follow the prompts. The section on the bottom of the screen tells you which way your next turn will be(left or right) and it tells you how far away from the turn you are at the moment. This unit is accurate to within 5 feet or so of where my car was so it would be very hard to miss a turn. My old unit was only locked in from about 20 yards, which caused problems sometimes when I was on a freeway and passed my exit going 70.
10.I have not been able to get lane assist to work yet (I only drove local routes). This is part of the reason I bought this unit. From the pictures on other reviews it looks great.
11.I have no clue on how the routing is compared to my old unit yet. I will get a better judge of this over time. I like it a lot so far.
12.The screen is absolutely bright enough to see in the daytime. The sound is loud enough to hear the spoken street names and directions.Overall I highly recommend this unit. If anything changes in the next few months I will come in and update my review.

Garmin nuvi 750 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Portable Dashboard Mount Included
Great Value for the money! I found the Garmin 750 easy to set up and easy to use. Operating this unit is intuitive, but complete directions are included. I have yet to "play" with all the features, but it works great while using it for my second job. I have to find a lot of locations in the countryside (a lot of back roads) and the unit has been invaluable! You get one free update with the unit that should be done as soon as you get it to make sure the most recent maps are downloaded. One note of caution - you have to download the most recent version of maps on the Garmin website and you have to do this using either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. I found this out when I couldn't download updates using Google Chrome and had to contact Garmin.

Premium Car Mount / Charger / FM Transmitter for all Generations of AT&T and Verizon Apple iPhone and iPod Review

Premium Car Mount / Charger / FM Transmitter for all Generations of ATandT and Verizon Apple iPhone and iPod

(More customer reviews)
Hi all,
This is the first report I am ever writing, so don't be too strict with me!
I purchased this Car Mount / FM Transmitter about a week ago and have it in use for only two days now. You take the car mount out of the box, plug it into your cigarette lighter, and it works. It holds my iPhone 3GS nicely. I have a case on (Incipio Feather Case) and I do not need to take it off, it fits perfectly as you can adjust the width of the holder as well as the back part of it (little turning knob on the back for adjustment). I would think that other iPods and earlier iPhones would also fit without problems.
The car mount comes with an audio cable which you attach to the bottom part of the holder and plug it into your iPhone so you can make calls and hear the voice over your car radio. Haven't used it much but it works quite well. The audio quality is very good, only very little background noise and in my opinion superior to what I had used before (little wireless iGrip FM adapter). I am actually impressed by the sound quality the transmitter delivers. It comes with a little on/off button that is very convenient. You can turn the device on and off and decide when you iPhone should be charged or not. When in off mode it will of course not play music through the transmitter. You have four preset buttons where you can save a frequency for quick access. The search feature is also pretty cool as you are able to find a free station within seconds. Just press two buttons at the side for about 3 seconds and the transmitter selects a station where it can send on without interference. You can easily use the car mount in both vertical and horizontal mode. This comes in handy if you want to use your iPhone for GPS navigation.
The downside of this product is that it will not fit every car I guess. I am driving a Ford Taurus 2005, and the DC outlet is inconveniently positioned, which means when I plug it in and try to adjust the whole thing, the part that goes into the outlet is too short and does not let you adjust well. the plastic parts in the middle of my car are in the way so I have to turn the whole holder slightly to the side to get it in a stable and well visible position. But this will vary from car to car and is not necessarily a negative aspect of the product.
However, when I first plugged it in, it was very hard to remove it again. I actually slightly damaged the plastic and rubber parts of the charger because I had to literally rip it out of the DC outlet. In my opinion this is because a) I have a very tight cigarette lighter (at least I think) and b) there are small rubber/gummi part on the side of the thing that goes into the outlet. The rubber parts fitted the charger so tightly that it was very hard to take it out again. When I ripped it out the rubber wore off and is now slightly damaged. I am not sure if this was my fault, but I didn't expect it to be that hard to take the charger out again. I tried it in another car after that and there it fit just well, it wasn't a problem to take it out again.
Anyway, all in all I give four stars for this product, mainly because the sound quality is amazing and it pretty much does what it is supposed to do: it holds and charges your iPhone and also plays your music through the car radio in really good quality. It is rather expensive, but so far worth the money I as I enjoy listening to non-noisy music from my iPhone in my car.
----------------- edit on January 23rd: It's been a while since I purchased this unit, and gave it a rather positive review. Due to the fact that a lot of people have experienced huge problems with this car mount system I feel like editing my first review:
I have the item in use now for about 2 months, and I would still rate this prodcut 4 stars out of five. I understand that iPhones would not work with any case (I guess the thiker the worse...), however, it does with mine. I have a very thin case called iFeather, made by Incipio (for 3GS). My unit (crossing my fingers) still works flawlessly, has not fallen into pieces, although I pulled it out and plugged it back in (different cars) many times, and does not shut off randomly. The hands free feature works well also.
I feel sorry for all those who made bad experiences with this prodcut, but wanted to tell you that there are positive stories. Honestly, given the rather high price of the unit, I would hope that it would work without problems in more cases for more people. This surely seems to be a downside of the FlexPod X2!

Boss BV9997BI In-Dash Motorized 7" DVD/MP3/CD/iPod Touchpanel Widescreen Receiver with USB, SD Card, Bluetooth and Front Panel AUX Input (Detachable Front Panel) Review

I purchased this to replace an old Radio in my 95 Jeep GC. Space is very limited in the radio compartment. The BOSS BV9997BI MultiMedia player comes with a wad of wires, hard wired into the radio back that also has two large wiring connector cubes. To fit all this in, plus the radio wiring adapter and IPOD cable, entensive cutting had to be done to the Jeep radio area. The radio comes with a cable for an IPOD that must be stuck into the back of the radio, rather than having an outlet on the face of the radio. If you will be installing a backup camera, purchase it and do it during the initial BOSS install, or you will have to remove the radio again. The 7" display is very good, but if you retract it and attempt to use the display on the faceplate, it is extremely dim to the extent it is totally inadequate viewing in the daylight. It can also be a function that the lettering and background are both light colors and the text is very thin. It is easy to read at night, in the dark, and actually could use a dimmer, but has none.
The common on/off as part of the volume switch does not work with the BOSS. Rather, you have to press and hold a SOURCE button for that function. Attempting to insert a CD or DVD does not automatically select the function to play it. You must first select the media by pressing and releasing the SOURCE button. Original CDs with painted-on labels work fine, but I inserted some CDs with press-on labels and had difficulty getting them to eject. There appears to be too close a tolerance in the mechanism to accomodate labeled CDs without problems. (Letting the BOSS cool down allowed me to extract the CD's.) Adjusting the channel balance could be made easier by adding a joystick-like button to the faceplate. Manually adjusting the balance with the touchscreen is a challenge and definitely not for use while on the go. Faceplate adjusting is even worse. The detachable front panel only detatches the buttons in the lower faceplate. It is held on by two small, fragile looking pieces of plastic that I hope don't break off.
Not all functions are on the faceplate. Some can only be accessed using the remote control. So don't misplace or forget to take the remote. The instruction manual is extremely poor, missing explanations for highlighted, numbered functions and having clear explanations. BOSS really should employ someone with native English skills to write and edit their manuals.
Although the concept of incorporating all the latest bells and whistles into a unit is great, BOSS falls short in making the package easy and working well. I will pursue purchasing an extra remote and frontpanel, in case they break or are lost. I cannot recommend this to others. I also wonder if BOSS's other flip-out players don't suffer from the same problems, since most seem to be design and documentation problems.

PIONEER CNSD-110FM Map Update for PIOAVICZ110BT Navigation A/V Receiver Review

PIONEER CNSD-110FM Map Update for PIOAVICZ110BT Navigation A/V Receiver

I was extremely excited to get this upgrade/update and frankly I'm kind of disappointed now that I do. It is an update to the Navi maps, but the new GUI is a bit disappointing. The ipod artist/song/album, etc. scroll is nice, but to get it to scroll you have to apply a "medium" amount of screen pressure in order to not actually select the name. The tile scroll on the right is particularly difficult to use in that regard. Everytime I try and "grab" a tile to scroll, it instead just selects that tile. Very frustrating.
My biggest disappointment was the Pandora Link. As an Iphone user I was pretty happy with the old Bluetooth connecting Pandora Audio. You had to control Pandora from your phone but you could still have it in your pocket or in the cup holder or whatever, you know, wirelessly. Which I think we all know is the way things are headed these days. Well I finally get this update and I'm psyched that this PandoraLink is available, allowing you to fully control Pandora from your Pioneer head unit. Well, I was very disappointed to realized that first you have to plug your Iphone in to the Ipod cable. So if you have a resident ipod, you have to unplug that. Not only that but you have to start the PandoraLink app and then wait for it to start up and recognize the headunit which I've had limited success with. Furthermore, now if you want to switch audio sources, say back to your ipod, you have to the whole unplug and replug thing. This completely defeats the purpose of this "upgrade" if you ask me. Not only that, but like many I assume, you ipod cable is routed to a center console, glove box, etc. So now your phone is in an area that you cannot reach if you wish (since the bluetooth phone aspect of this head unit is so terrible). Personally I paid $167 for this feature. And not I'm back to using the Bluetooth Audio again... just like before. Plus I don't have my onscreen "ipod wheel" controls anymore, which if you ask me, is a pretty tried and true great control interface. Way to try and reinvent the wheel Pioneer. FAIL.
