Here are some features I like.
Built-in HD Radio(R) Tuner: Don't buy stereo without HD Radio. Like TV, all radio stations across US are converting to digital FM. Digital transmission has better signal and it displays name of songs/bands/artists.
MP3/WMA Compatible: You can play mp3 CDs.
Front USB Port: You can directly plug flash drive into USB port and it plays mp3s from it. I no more have to burn CDs for few new songs. I just copy them in flash drive and play from it.
Front AUX-IN: I have Sansa Mp3 player and I connect to Aux-in sometimes. I can play all the music from my mp3 player to car stereo
Variable-Color Illumination: You can match the color of your car console to stereo display.
I like this stereo very much and would recommended it to anyone.

iTunes Tagging iTunes Tagging allows users to store or "tag" information about that song they are hearing on HD Radio and store it in their receiver. The tagged song information will transfer to their iPod/iPhone and be recalled in iTunes allowing them the option to purchase that song from the iTunes store. How it works:
When you hear a song you like on the radio, press the "TAG" key to save the information on the headunit.
Information is transferred to your iPod when you connect to the headunit.
Information is transferred to iTunes when you sync your iPod to your computer.

This unit is much more intuitive and easy to use, far more versatile with the number of inputs and seems to be a much higher quality product to boot. Everything is set up to be as easy to use as possible. Flash memory and iPod control are plug-and-play. It simply couldn't be any easier! The only reason this got 4 stars rather than 5 is because it only has 2 sets of outputs. One more pair and this unit would be perfect!

Pioneer DEHP4001HD Car CD Receiver with HD Radio Review

(More customer reviews)First off, the sound quality is remarkable. I had an old Pioneer head unit that was about 6 years old. It just played a single (normal) CD and AM/FM. This unit is not only capable of obviously having HD radio with the included external HD radio module, but, you can actually daisy-chain other modules to that. So, basically, this thing is infinitely expandable. I'm seriously considering purchasing the BlueTooth module as well.
My iPhone 3GS works perfectly with the USB interface. You cannot control the audio with the iPhone, however, all the other functions of the phone are still functional. Pandora does work over USB as well (and you can control the audio with your phone).
The reason I mentioned that this unit is "a bit of a pain" is because of the navigation knob. You get used to it but every once in a while you have to actually press the dial IN. So, this dial can click UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, and IN as well as rotate left and right. So, you can imagine there are some "typos" everyone in a while.
The installation was pretty easy if you have any experience with installing car stereos. Don't forget your wiring harness, and possible antenna adapter and dash kit.

Kenwood KDC-HD942U USB/AAC/WMA/MP3 CD Receiver with Built-In HD Radio Review

HD-Radio is broadcast at 1% of the stations normal power, in other words if the station's analog signal is 100 watts, the HD signal is only 1 watt! So, make sure you've got a top quality antenna, don't bother with a "booster", I've never seen one that works. Also make sure you choose a receiver with higher sensitivity (lowest dBf).
On to the review...
I purchased this radio to replace a JVC KD-HDR1 which also has HD-Radio but not as good sensitivity. It's installed in a '93 Explorer with Kenwood 6X9 door speakers but no external amp or eq. I do not use the cell phone, Bluetooth, satellite radio or iPod features but do use the USB interface with a 64Gig "thumb drive" with over 200 albums and some singles ripped at 250K sample rate and plan to connect the AUX input to the audio from my ham radio in the future (which is one of the reasons I picked this radio).

Sound quality is very good. Even without an external amp I can get enough volume to overcome road noise from my off-road tires and wind noise without distortion. The built in EQ, is only three bands which is somewhat disappointing for a radio of this caliber. I would expect at least 7 bands if not more.
The HD-Radio reception outperforms my old JVC KD-HDR1 hands down. I can receive all the local stations (Denver-Boulder-FortCollins) without any problems, something the JVC couldn't come close to doing. The CD player works fine although I would prefer not having to tip down the faceplate to change CDs. The USB interface works as expected and while some people prefer a front panel connector, I like the attached 1meter cable. I've routed the cable into the glove box and have the "thumb drive" attached at all times. I'm still figuring out the supplied "Kenwood Music Editor" and creating play-lists but that's just getting over the learning curve of a new piece of software.
The menu system could be improved. It just isn't intuitive and getting to some features is a pain in the behind. I also don't like the quick access to bass-boost/balance/fader via the volume control. Once they are set, they are seldom changed so why bother. I wish it had a front panel mute feature (this would be better than the bass-boost/balance/fader in the volume control). Maybe I'm too "old school", but I miss the six preset station buttons that none of the newer radios have. They allowed direct access to my favorite stations without stepping up and down or taking my attention away from the road to find a specific station. I would also like a way to have the data/time in place of the SPA/Clock on the bottom line of the display (who really cares about the real-time audio levels?). The manual is poor at best. It covers 4 radios and contains errors. There is very little explanation of what features and settings do, just how to change them, even then you have to be in certain modes to access them and those limits are in one place in the manual while the so called detailed information on the feature is in another.
Over all, if I had to choose again I would still buy this over any other radio in the price range, or even twice the price.

Kenwood KTC-HR300 HD Radio Tuner Box with Itunes Tagging Review

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased the KTC-HR300 HD Tuner for an older Kenwood eXcelon radio (the KDC-X790) I have in an antique hot rod. I purchased it outside of Amazon at a higher price because information was lacking concerning older HD compatable Kenwood radios, and I was concerned I might need to return it. Also, Kenwood doesn't warranty anything not sold by their affiliated dealers.
Even the major Kenwood electronics supplier I purchased from was unsure the KTC-HR300 HD would work with my older (2007) Kenwood radio - although it was HD rated by Kenwood. The first tech told me straight out it wouldn't work with my older head unit. Boy, have I got a surprise for him. I later called back and spoke with another tech there, pointing out a few things in the Kenwood USA site item description, and ordered the unit from them with the understanding I could return it if it didn't work.
The only thing that doesn't work is my headunit is unable to do the iTunes "tagging" the KTC-HR300 HD is capable of - big deal. I just wanted HD radio. As it turns out, anything compatable with the older KTC-HR200 HD is also compatable with the KTC-HR300 HD.
Installation couldn't be easier. I might have spent five minutes total - and was taking my time. The KTC-HR300 HD comes with a 57" antenna extention and a patch cord of roughly the same length for connection to the headunit. A "KAB" adapter is also provided for newer headunits using "KAB" instead of the older "5L" connector that my older headunit has. I liked that the "5L" connector has a locking feature that securely holds it to the headunit once connected. As for the antenna, you simply pull the antenna from the headunit and install it to the KTC-HR300 HD connector. As quickly as I turned on the headunit, the KTC-HR300 HD was operating.
There are two switches on the KTC-HR300 HD some may need to set. Default is "Off" for both, and for using the "5L" connector. Using the "KAB" connector requires switch 1 placed in the "On" position.
Those long cables also meant I could easily place the KTC-HR300 HD under a seat or just about anywhere I wanted. Two pieces of included Velcro fasteners also allowed me to secure the small unit (6-1/2x1-3/8x4-5/16 inch) firmly out of the way. My mounting position allowed for some air circulation around the top of the KTC-HR300 HD, and I was worried some as I had read the older KTC-HR200 HD had run warm. After running the unit for two hours in full HD play and use, I was relieved to find my KTC-HR300 HD was still cool to the touch.
In operation, there was a small learning curve, but the eXcelon KDC-X790 is a complicated receiver with many features. Once I was accustomed to using the eXcelon controls and had made my headunit menu settings for HD, which required the headunit manual, operation was simple and my reward was great HD performance. I didn't even notice any sacrifice to standard analog FM or AM - but I could tell the difference in sound (for the better) using HD. What I liked best was I now can listen to many more programing choices - many much better than offered on analog. The KTC-HR 300 HD unit simply made an all around improvement.
The HD tuner station program acquisition was quick, and (40 miles out from stations) my reception lock on HD was very good on all but two. Those two tended to take a second or two, during which my eXcelon's screen displayed it was acquiring the signal, once locked it drifted back and forth some between analog and digital on those two, but the transfer was seamless and the sound quality remained good (this was using my vehicle's fender mounted OEM fixed wire mast antenna). I have to say I'm quite pleased with the performance of this unit in my application - and the "heads up" screen displays for the HD programs and all stations. Using that headunit just became much better with the addition of the KTC-HR300 HD. I'll definitely be purchasing another of these for another older Kenwood "HD Ready" headunit I have in another antique vehicle - and my next purchase of this product will be through Amazon (warranty or not).
Update - Actually, the paperwork that came with my old eXcelon KDC-X790 recommended the even earlier KTC-9090DAB. After reading the manual for that one, I'm glad I waited.

Pioneer MVH-P8200BT Multimedia AV Receiver with Built-in Bluetooth Review

(More customer reviews)I received my MVH-P8200BT yesterday, and installed it. Installation was as normal as any other stereo, except the additional parking brake wire if you want to use the photo or video portion of this radio. Let me first start out by saying the AM & FM portion of the radio work pretty good, you can relatively easily seek to the next or previous station by pushing the knob left or right, or bring up your presets by pushing it up. The radio displays the RDS nicely as well. Changing sources (Radio, ipod/USB, or Aux input requires pressing the SRC button and rotating the tuning knob to the right or left to highlight the source and then pressing the tuning knob in. This in all is relatively easy to do in a timely manner.
Where the problem comes in, is using the ipod interface. it will start playing I believe the last song you had playing, but if you want to jump to another artist or lets say a podcast, be prepared to take your eyes off the road. You have to hit the Home button, and then rotate the knob one to the right and then press it in, and rotate the knob to highlight Songs or podcast or artist, and in my case lets do podcast, then the lost of podcast comes up and you have to rotate to the podcast and press the knob in, then it shows you the episodes, then you push it in. But on top of doing this, the tuning knob which is a 5 way control (left, right, up , down, and in) is very sensitive and plan on registering the wrong menu choice, and then having to hit the previous button on the display to pop out one menu and continue. You have to do this anything you want to change songs that are not the next immediate song that you can just press the right commander button to jump to next track.
So, I thought, well the nice remote has a left right up and down, and in feature as well. I will do this from the remote with a little more precision, well turns out 70% of the buttons on the remote don't even do anything. any function that requires you to turn that knob on the radio, still has to be done that way. the up and down will not allow you to scroll through menu items. the only real think I was able to do with the remote was volume, next track and previous track, and radio tuning.
If you thought it would be nice to be able to play videos from your ipod or photos, it requires a $40 cable with a usb and aux cable now hanging out of the front of the radio per the manual. I did put some photos on the SD card, but you cannot play music from SD while you do your slid show, and again its a cumbersome use of the scroll wheel to jog between music and photos on the SD setup. You are able to play the slide show while listening to the radio.
Now for the real good, I think the best integration with this unit is the bluetooth with the iphone or probably many other phones, I was able to easily pull up contacts, and you can quickly choose a letter of the starting letter of the contact and click through to dial the appropriate name and if you want to call mobile or home. And the audio with the included mic is excellent. it will mute your music and continue it when your call is done.
The radio looks really good and thats what lead me immediately to this model, but I am ever so sorry I did not test it out before doing the install. I for sure thought the short comings would be overcome by using the remote, but you had no way to test it that well in the store. The remote is useless for iPod navigation or navigation or any SD media. I did get a chance to watch many tutorials online on the Alpine receiver 305 which was made for iPod and it has the navigation the way I would prefer it, thought it does lack characters and you have to scroll most titles, this pioneer was able to display a good character set. Oh and speaking of a feature that Alpine has, it has a nice readable clock. The clock on this is small, there is a feature you can turn on to show a nice clock, but you have to turn it on every time, it doesn't stay on as an option. Even with the radio in off mode, it should show the nice larger clock IMHO, but it doesn't you have to fight menus again to call this up.
To summarize, much fighting with a poor jog wheel to drill through menus to make common settings to what you want to listen to. They made it simple to change source and volume and next and previous track everything else gets deep in menus that will take usually 6 to 10 seconds to drill through menus to do, this is not safe in a car and the remote which could have assisted in this matter has much less ability. I think if you can do a double din the AVH-P3200 double din touch screen, is sooo much easier to navigate and for not more then $120 more in general, very upgradable and the addition items you get (CD/DVD slot and DVD playback, you wont be trying to convert stuff to Divx, and you can burn your stuff or bring along your DVD's and you have a bigger screen.

(More customer reviews)I usually don't do reviews, but I am so happy with this purchase I had to. I searched around for an entire month trying to find the right receiver. I think that for the money this product is hands down a total score! It has an aux and a usb. Now, when I purchased this I was thinking on using the ipod with the aux input originally. While the usb port can be used for direct Ipod connection and memory stick media (memory stick media?!) I figured I'd only use it to charge my ipod once the bat was running low. I have heard such bad things about ipod/usb functionality in radio receivers that I never thought I would actually use it. I love my ipod, and with the 32,000+ songs I have on there, being able to quickly scroll to what I want is essential, and its pretty hard to keep track of the new stuff I put on because I don't have enough time in the day to listen to all the songs, so I do a lot of rating. trying to scroll through quickly using any receiver search button seemed like a joke and you can't rate songs when you can't use the ipods native click wheel. But i digress. The point is I looked in the manual and found "hands-on/hands/off". With the ipod plugged into the usb port on the receiver I can hit 1 and 3 on the radio and switch between the modes. Now I can use the benefits of the usb port (charging, quality sound) AAAAND use my ipods native clickwheel functionality at the same time. I don't even use the aux anymore! and whenever I decide I want to listen to the ipod on random i just push button 1 on the radio and my artist/album scroll across the screen and I am still happy. The only thing so far that is negative are:
1.the screen during the day is almost impossible to see with sunlight on it. it just looks pink.
2.when using the awesome usb mode i quickly mentioned up top.....for the first 30 seconds in either hands-on/hands-off mode you get a little song distortion because it is loading up i guess. Like i said i have over 30,000 songs and if i get 2 noise interruptions for a second a piece for the first 30 seconds of run-time and thats it, i'd say this is an outstanding product for all who love using there ipods in the car! buy it. u will be very happy. also, I have 4 polk audio db and they sound outstanding with all but a tiny fragment of songs in the hip-hop genre.

The FM quality is very good, very clear.
I can pick up stations that I was unable to receive before (too weak of a signal--maybe my other head unit was going bad?).
The HD is very cool; crystal clear and a wider stereo effect.
Downside to HD is that it drops out when signal is weak.
4GB usb thumbdrive worked flawlessly.
The overall sound is very good, in my opinion.
I have the option to upgrade to bluetooth and sat radio as well.
I am very satisfied.
On the downside, I find the menu and buttons cumbersome.
Some of the buttons are too small, the menus are not intuitive, etc.
The remote is VERY basic.
Still, I am very satisfied.
I give it a 5 because of the price and options.

Driving in the Los Angeles Area, I find the data to be much more accurate than XMs... and delivery over HD Radio is about 10X faster than I had become used to. I do wish that the device had a little larger screen, but the quality of the display and software's ease of use are quite good. After 60 days, I'm still very happy with my purchase and a few of my friends have bought one too.

PIONEER CNSD-110FM Map Update for PIOAVICZ110BT Navigation A/V Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)I was extremely excited to get this upgrade/update and frankly I'm kind of disappointed now that I do. It is an update to the Navi maps, but the new GUI is a bit disappointing. The ipod artist/song/album, etc. scroll is nice, but to get it to scroll you have to apply a "medium" amount of screen pressure in order to not actually select the name. The tile scroll on the right is particularly difficult to use in that regard. Everytime I try and "grab" a tile to scroll, it instead just selects that tile. Very frustrating.
My biggest disappointment was the Pandora Link. As an Iphone user I was pretty happy with the old Bluetooth connecting Pandora Audio. You had to control Pandora from your phone but you could still have it in your pocket or in the cup holder or whatever, you know, wirelessly. Which I think we all know is the way things are headed these days. Well I finally get this update and I'm psyched that this PandoraLink is available, allowing you to fully control Pandora from your Pioneer head unit. Well, I was very disappointed to realized that first you have to plug your Iphone in to the Ipod cable. So if you have a resident ipod, you have to unplug that. Not only that but you have to start the PandoraLink app and then wait for it to start up and recognize the headunit which I've had limited success with. Furthermore, now if you want to switch audio sources, say back to your ipod, you have to the whole unplug and replug thing. This completely defeats the purpose of this "upgrade" if you ask me. Not only that, but like many I assume, you ipod cable is routed to a center console, glove box, etc. So now your phone is in an area that you cannot reach if you wish (since the bluetooth phone aspect of this head unit is so terrible). Personally I paid $167 for this feature. And not I'm back to using the Bluetooth Audio again... just like before. Plus I don't have my onscreen "ipod wheel" controls anymore, which if you ask me, is a pretty tried and true great control interface. Way to try and reinvent the wheel Pioneer. FAIL.
