Magellan Maestro 3225 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan Maestro 3225 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I recently purchased this from C----o for $150 because of their more liberal return policy, but I don't think I'll be returning this unit unless it fails. Some background: I've been using a GPS unit via my HP iPaq running OnCourse Navigator for several years, so I'm familiar with GPS units in general, and have been looking for a replacement for a long time because the OCN software seemed to quit at the most inopportune times. I've also had the opportunity to play with my dad's Nuvi 350, which is a very nice unit, but costs at least $100 more. Because of my experience with OCN, I had a minimum set of needs that had to be met, and the 3225 has done this in spades. In particular, I see these units as mostly disposable, because once the maps get out of date (important if you live anywhere where new streets may be added), it's not very cost effective to pay for the map updates vs. buying a new unit, especially at this price point (as an aside, I will be keeping an eye on the Dash Express Two-Way Internet-Connected Portable GPS Navigator because it overcomes many weaknesses of all the current units -- for a price).
The set of requirements I had for a replacement GPS were: 1) small form factor (needed to fit in a shirt pocket) 2) TTS (text to speech, ability to say the actual street name) 3) fast satellite acquisition (most units can do this) 4) low price point 5) good POI database 6) intuitive interface. Note I did not include good customer service as a requirement, which would have eliminated Magellan. However, I am tech savvy enough that I do not foresee any need for service, other than if the unit fails. After using the 3225 for about a week, here are my observations:
Pros:
Low price given capabilities
Great POI database (if you "upgrade" to the 6M POIs, just Google around)
True text-to-speech, says a synthesized version of actual street names, that, even if mangled, helps significantly in navigating
Nice bright screen
Fast satellite acquisition
Fast user interface response (very little lag when entering info)
Gives good advance warning prior to turn ("turn right in 0.5 miles followed by a left turn")
Very portable -- fits easily in pocket
Most accessories included (AC adapter, USB cable, mount, car charger)
Cons:
No Bluetooth, mp3 or video player (these don't matter to me, but shouldn't expect these features at this price point)
No external battery charge indicator (in order to see charge state, need to power on, go to System Status, and view the status on the screen, which slows charge since screen is on)
Maps may be getting a bit dated (mostly fine in my area, but others have complained; I've read that this is not Magellan's fault but Navteq, the map-making company, and that the next major map update is due this summer)
Relatively low battery life (3 hrs vs. many other units at 5+)
Routing may not be as good as Garmin (but YMMV)
No carrying case (but you should be able to find something acceptable for not much at your local Target or Walmart)
I've mounted mine on the Bracketron UFM-100BL Nav-Mat GPS Friction Dash Pad because windshield mounting is illegal in California, and that has worked great. [[Update]]I just took delivery on a very cheap case, the Caselogic JDS-6 USB Drive Shuttle 6-Capacity (Black), which works quite well for the 3225 (and I imagine many other 3.5" units); it's not a perfect fit, but at $5, I can't complain, and it's nice looking to boot. I feel like if I accidentally dropped it onto the concrete, it would probably survive unscathed.
Again, if you're looking for a unit with all the bells and whistles, look elsewhere (and open up your wallet wider). If you're looking for a great entry-level unit with a decent feature set, I think you could do a lot worse. Use it for a few years, and then buy a new unit (maybe the next generation Dash).

We had it on my husbands dirt bike a little over a day, when he somehow bumped it with his leg and it cracked in half. (I seem to recall something about "I was falling and I went to save myself .... LOL) I've got it on my quad and it's great!!!! Holds tight and I've not had any problems. I just ordered another one for his bike ... I have faith it was just a fluke (Of course ... since he never rides extreem rides and he never falls LOL) and hope his next one holds up better (thinking I should have ordered a case?!?!?) :)

This is my very first GPS system. I have always wanted one but when sales hit the wallet wasn't there to purchase. The one that I purchased was used. If you had laid one straight from the factory beside of mine it would be very hard to know which was which. The only problem that I had nothing major and that is there wasn't any directions that came with it. That wasn't a major issue, I learned by trial and error. The product works great and full fills all of my needs. I had never heard of the company before, but everything turned out good. Very easy to operate and see. The screen is very clear and very easy to see. My test drive with it went great. I drive a restored 92 Roadmaster and short cuts ease the gas consumption which is fantastic. I am fairly new to the area where I live and this saves a lot of time and keeps me from running late. Plus it looks cool, my major problem now is that I don't have any reason now for being late. I am an old man who has returned back to college and also live on a fixed income and this device helps me so much on the gas I save when I have no idea as to where I need to go has been cured. Thanks Amazon for the great deal. Like everything I have gotten from you guys has always far exceed the thoughts I had when purchasing. Again thanks and you will hear from me more when it comes time to purchasing. Joe Tackett Sr.

Nextar X4B 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Nextar X4B 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first GPS. I wanted a unit with TTS and a 4.3" screen. I was looking at the TomTom 720 and the Garmin nuvi 750 when I saw the great price on this unit. I decided to take a chance on a unit costing much less than what I was planning to spend. (In fairness, the TomTom and Garmin have a few additional features like an FM transmitter.) So far, I have not regretted it.
The unit powers up and locks on to the satellites fairly quickly if you have a clear view of the sky. Setup and navigation are fairly straightforward. The onboard stylus is useful but you can use your finger as well. Nextar does not show as much info on the main navigation screen as some others (e.g. signal strength) but I haven't found that to be a problem. It does have a volume control on the side, which some more expensive units don't seem to provide. It comes with the usual complement of chargers and mounts.
The TTS feature works well and the voice is clear and unaccented. I do not have a Bluetooth phone so I am unable to comment on that capability. I will say that both the Nextar and Garmin manuals spend many pages on Bluetooth setup, so it certainly seems to be a technology that isn't plug-n-play yet.
I initially set up an itinerary for a trip from Austin to Pittsburgh. The Nextar came up with a better route than MS Streets & Trips. I was able to easily add stopovers and it recomputed the route fairly quickly. Although having "only" 1.6M POIs, I was able to find most of the hotels and restaurants I was interested in for the trip. I used it around town over the weekend and it responded well to real-time course changes when I took streets that weren't on the route. No lockups or reboots. The unit successfully navigated in and around Memphis and other cities and stops on the route. There were some mistakes, mostly in whether connecting roads were right or left turns. I'm sure this is due to mistakes in the Navteq maps and not anything peculiar to the Nextar.
On a trip to Long Beach the unit also worked well in navigating from the airport to the hotel and then to other POIs. It did have our hotel on the wrong side of the street but I'm sure that's an error in the map.
I loaded some MP3s onto a 1GB SD card and the MP3 player played them just fine. One glitch is that it doesn't have a shuffle mode. I hope that will be added in a later upgrade. I did not try to load/view pictures. A USB cable is provided but has no function yet as there is nothing on the Nextar website to update. The unit was built in July so there is probably little need as yet.
The manual could be better, especially for GPS newbies like me. It has taken some experimentation to figure out how the various features work.
All in all, I am very satisfied. It doesn't have all of the features of more expensive units, but it is a great value for a 4.3" unit with TTS. I lost the slip case and tried to contact Nextar support. After a week I have not had any response.

Magellan RoadMate 2035 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic Review

Magellan RoadMate 2035 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here's my video review, if you have any questions or something I didn't cover, please feel free to leave a comment and I'll do my best to answer!
UPDATE Nov.'10: On a recent trip to visit my parents, it alerted me to a car accident on the highway. It gave me a few options to detour and told me how long each one would take in comparison. Telling me there's an accident is helpful, but I absolutely ADORE the specifics with the timing.
Big Pros!:
- I often use a traffic app on my iphone. So I'm sitting there with all these devices, all with different info. Now, with this GPS, it's got it all. Live traffic updates and I won't have to pay attention to multiple screens. In order to get the lifetime traffic updates for free, there are little banner ads now and then. They don't block the map or directions, so they don't bother me at all.
- The screen is large and bright, and the voice is nice and loud. Sometimes I have issues hearing my garmin, with this I was only 1/2 way in the sound level and it was clear as a bell.
- My garmin has a flip up antenna that I'm always convinced I'll eventually snap off. The Magellan is internal, so that makes me a lot more comfortable.
- I LOVE the fact that it adjust so fast to wrong turns, but it doesn't shout "recalculating" at me, which really usually just makes you feel dumb that even with a GPS you're still going the wrong way. It just quickly decides the next best way to continue on my route. Sometimes my Garmin will send me on the most ridiculous back tracking journeys, the Magellan so far hasn't done that to me.
I love this Magellan RoadMate 2035 GPS top to bottom. In comparing it with my Garmin Nuvi 360, there are a couple features I did notice though that this doesn't have, which can be a con depending on what features are important to you.
- security code: I lock my garmin only because people seem to steal GPS devices from cars quite often in my town. If someone were to steal my nuvi, they won't be able to use it(unless there's a way to break into them, which I'm not aware of). It just sits there asking for your password/security code.
- My garmin links with my iphone by bluetooth to turn the GPS into a speaker phone, though it wasn't great quality, people used to say I sounded like I was in a tunnel. The Magellan isn't bluetooth capable.
- My garmin lets you choose a variety of voices with a few different accents, most notably British or Australian. The garmin woman is just annoying to listen to, so I had it set to an Australian guy who was very pleasant. This Magellan is one voice, no choices. But so far she isn't grating on my nerves.
- It didn't come with a little slip case. In the box there was the actual GPS, manual, window suction cup mount and charger. So now I'll have to find something to protect it when it's in my bag.

Escort Passport iQ 5" Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Radar/Laser Detector Review

Escort Passport iQ 5 Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Radar/Laser Detector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my 9500ix was stolen out of my car earlier this year, I went shopping for a replacement. I was happy to see that someone FINALLY came out with a legitimate Radar/GPS combo that was housed in a stealthy "GPS-looking" body. I ordered the IQ and used it for 2 weeks. Then I boxed it up, sent it back, and ordered another 9500ix. On the positive side, the radar seemed to work equally as well as my 9500ix did. On the negative side, the IQ was HUGE&HEAVY, the GPS software was poor (didnt like the user interface, the routes were not always the best, and it often brought me to a location "down the road" from the intended destination), and I did not like the design of the mount - whether windshield mounted or "bean-bag" dash mounted, the power cord plugs into the *UNIT ITSELF* and NOT the bracket. On the heels of having my previous 9500ix stolen, I certainly didnt want to leave my new and expensive IQ on display when the vehicle was parked. This meant unplugging the power cord from the side before removing it from the mount each time I parked my car. Sounds trivial, but one of many minor annoyances with this unit that I believe will be fixed in the next generation of IQ. Speaking of the next generation -- bluetooth would have been nice in a unit that cost $600+. These days, even a $100 Garmin or TomTom has bluetooth.
In short, I liked the idea of the IQ, but I think the product in its current state misses the mark. Perhaps if Escort addresses some of the issues and releases an updated version in the coming year I will try again, but for now I am perfectly happy with my "9500ix + Garmin".

Cobra GPSM 7700 Pro 7-Inch Widescreen Portable Truck GPS Navigator Review

Cobra GPSM 7700 Pro 7-Inch Widescreen Portable Truck GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this unit for to use primarily in a truck because of the large 7" screen. Right off the bat, I was disappointed because the screen resolution is very poor. While driving, as roads on the screen get larger, the poor resolution makes them blocky and jumpy. Honestly, I haven't seen graphics this poor since I upgrade my PC from CGA to EGA! My first thought was, Why doesn't the screen look as clear as it does in all the advertising pictures, and Why don't the colors match the nice crisp green that's shown Cobra's web site and elsewhere? So I called Cobra's tech support number, and was told that the product pictures on the web site and the product box and virtually everywhere else where only "artists concepts" and not pictures of the actual product! How's that for truth in advertising! Although the multi-stop trip feature is good (it does show both the mileage to the next stop as well as the total trip mileage) there is no way to sort or group your locations. If you've got a lot of locations inputted and you want to find one at the end of the alphabet, you've got to scroll through the whole alphabet to get there. May not be a big deal to some, but it is annoying. Here's the worst thing about the unit, and the thing that made me finally get rid of it... you CAN NOT zoom in or out while in navigation mode. The ONLY way to change the zoom level is to leave the navigation screen, go to the set-up screen, change the zoom setting, save your changes, AND THEN SHUT THE UNIT OF AND TURN IT BACK ON! Totally unacceptable! I like to keep the unit zoom out so I can see intersections and ramps coming up a mile or two away while on the highway, and then zoom in down to city block level when in the city or a more urban area. I've got two other units, a SONY for the car and now a Rand McNally TND-500 for the truck and this is a standard feature on both units. Bottom line... unless your virtually blind, stay away from this unit (and if your eyesight is that bad, you probably shouldn't be driving anyway.)

Having gone through my fair share of slow and inconsistent GPS products ranging from Garmin, TomTom and yes even Magellan through the years, one must really do their homework. After researching several systems this model kept popping up on my radar screen.
Coming out of the box, this unit worked perfectly without the usual hiccups of other systems that I have owned. Installation is simple. Downloading updates via the included USB cable was quick and without issues. Powering up is a breeze. Total time for entering starting point to destination is about 45 seconds. The One Touch screen is on the money. The menu allows for editing for one's own personal choices. I really have come to like the Predictive Traffic feature. In short, it creates alternate routes for known traffic tie ups.
Even though this system is primed for Bluetooth, not all mobile devices are compatible. The Maestro 4700 paired at times with two out of three of our cell phones. When it did pair, connections were dropped a bit more often then expected and clarity was an issue. As usual, my personal phone did not pair up at all with this system. Maybe its a great working feature with the right phone. Even if it did pair up with my go to phone, I don't see myself giving up my wireless ear piece anytime soon. This feature rates 3 stars at best.
Like every GPS system before it, Voice Command on this unit is simply a wasted feature that works when it wants to. This add on alone receives a failing grade from me. On the other hand, Spoken Street Name Guide with text to speech is clear and precise. The 3D Landmarks add on is a nice touch. I have yet to use the Find My Car feature. The free, no membership required AAA Guide is loaded with great up to date information.
The Maestro 4700 measures in at over 5" wide x 3.5" height and weighs about 6 ounces. The biggest draw for me personally is the large 4.7" color touch screen, predictive traffic, and the lane guide arrow features. The user friendly one touch interface is definitely a winner. On the downside, the Maestro 4700's screen is not viewable in all lighting conditions. Granted its not as bad as my previous model, but there is still some glare to contend with.
Quick Spell automatically fills in the blanks and makes locating a destination easy. One of the sweetest features is the lane guide arrows (Highway Lane Assist) program that sounds a bell when my next turn is coming up. It quickly guides me into the correct lane without the usual "Oops, how did I miss that exit?"
The Maestro 4700 comes preloaded with maps of the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. Additional maps can be stored on board via SD Card. Included accessories are a windshield mount, storage pouch, dash mounting disk, car power adapter, handbook, USB cable, and an informative CD. I recommend buying a good protective case. Magellan loses major style points for not including an AC power supply plug. Unplugged, the battery provided me a little over 2 hours of power.

As with most electronics, this system includes the standard 1 year warranty. If it is returned within the applicable warranty period, Magellan will replace the defective unit. Most likely the buyer will receive a reconditioned unit of the same model or at the company's discretion another model of lesser value. I know this from personal experience. Both Magellan and Garman share this replacement policy.
Even though Magellan has made marked improvements on its GPS products the last couple of years, its customer support has always lagged behind. After my latest chats with off shore customer support, all I can say it still needs improvement. At best, it ranks one star.
The glitches I found with both Voice Command and Bluetooth pairing undoubtedly keeps the Maestro 4700 from garnering more then a four star rating. Even with those issues this product still delivers on the basics. For me that is more then enough. Its still an above average NAVAIDS tool.

UPDATE:10.31.09
***************
I've owned this system for a few months now. I've driven cross country and back and also made my monthly run up the coast. The only issue that I have had is the age old problem with NAVTEQ maps. On more then one occasion the maps placed me in the opposite direction of my destination. I don't see the folks at NAVTEQ fixing this problem any time soon because it has existed for so long. NAVTEQ mapping was an issue on my other GPS products as well. I probably have a better chance of winning the lottery rather then waiting for the folks at NAVTEQ to fix their maps. Other then that, my Magellan 4700 GPS is still on the job and doing what it does best.

Axxess AFSI-01 Ford Sync Retention with Nav Wires LCD Display Review

Axxess AFSI-01 Ford Sync Retention with Nav Wires LCD Display

Axxess sync retention is performing well. PAC has a syn retention that in hind sight I would have purchased over the Axxess only for the black colored housing of the sync display commands as opposed to the, out of place, WHITE disply of the Axxess. Axxess has a great product, but an optional color choice for the sync display unit would be a big plus.

The AFSI-01 includes an LCD display to show the Sync system status and text information that is normally displayed on the factory radio. This interface does not change how the Ford Sync system operates but it will provide at 12-Volt accessory with the R.A.P Feature and illumination.

Mio C230 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Mio C230 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have the Mio C230 for about a month now. I have to say it was not very easy to use, but after a couple of hours, I was able to find my way around it. This is my third GPS, I have a Garmin C340 for almost two years, and a Nuvi 370 for about eight months; so I can say that I have a bit of experience with the Garmin products which considered to be one of the best GPS in the market. The only reason I got the Mio is the ability to add multiple stops to your final destination (Via Points), and the Mio's ability to optimize the route for you, a feature not available in the Garmin products. My girlfriend is a realtor, and she makes numerous stops to show houses to her clients; with the Garmin, she had to enter one stop at the time, which means that she might be going back and forth or zig zaging around; with the Mio, all she has to do is to input as many addresses as she needs to, and then the Mio will optimize the route and guide her around, cool.
You can enter address either by state / city / street; or you can use zip code / street; very nice feature. Any address you input will be automatically stored in the history and you can retrieve it at any time; you can also copy everything to the SD card and store it in your computer or use the data in another Mio, cool. If you don't have the address but know where your destination is on the map, you can touch that point on the map, and the Mio will take you there.
There is also an icon for "Home" where you can store your home address, by clicking it, the Mio will take you home, a similar one is for "work". You can rename both if needed.
The detailed information available on the screen in "cockpit mode" is impressive, on the upper left corner it shows the next maneuver (an arrow going right or left), below that it shows the distance to that maneuver and the estimated time of arrival to your final destination. Next to that you have four icons to zoom in and out on the map, and to change the view from 2 to 3 dimensions and vise versa. Another nice feature is the pedestrian mode, in that mode; the Mio will take you thru the shortest route ignoring the traffic direction of one way streets. You can customize the Mio for brighter screen or to get louder if you reach a specific speed; routing can be customized to shortest, fastest or economical. You can avoid Toll roads, U turns, unpaved roads, Highways, etc.
The Text to Speech feature is also a definite plus. The only thing that I really don't like in the Mio C230 is the very limited number of POI's (about 900K), you will hardly be able to find anything in there, Mio needs to do smoothing about that limitation. However, you can add you own POI's to the data base if you know the address.
In short, if you don't need the MP3/Photo player, or the blue tooth; then the Mio C230 is the one for you. It is a great basic GPS, loaded with features that may not be available on other big name brands. Impressive signal reception, bright screen, clear TTS voice, nice design, pocket size, at an unbeatable price.

Magellan RoadMate 2045 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic Review

Magellan RoadMate 2045 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have prior experience with GPS devices, but I have never before had one with the traffic capability. I didn't think I needed it. A recent event made me rethink that stance, and I was really pleased to have the opportunity to test this device for the Vine Program.
The GPS unit appears to be very well made. It comes with a car charger, and a USB cable. A wall charger needs to be purchased separately if you want one.
Cons:
This may sound silly, but you need to read the directions in order to hook up the car charger to the device. The end of the cable has to slide into grooves that are in the stand. The fit is very tight. I struggled and struggled with it until I had the bright idea to look at the manual. The upside to this is that the cable is unlikely to detach accidentally. The downside (which I think is more considerable) is that the cable joins the stand and the unit together so firmly that it's a pain to take them apart. And so I end up just jamming the whole thing in my glove box still assembled when I arrive at my destination, instead of taking them apart and putting the unit in its case (extra).
The other thing that I do NOT like is that Magellan has sold its soul to various commercial entities. Advertisements drift across the screen now and then, and (whoopee) "coupons" display at the end of the journey. Now, I am sorry, but these coupons just seem to be another layer to the advertising gimmick and have little real value to the consumer. I find the display of ads and coupons annoying and intrusive, along the line of advertisements on shopping carts at the grocery store.
The default speaking voice is less clear and understandable than the default voice on the Garmin 285. One of the turns I make on my route to work is Liberty Road. The voice sort of flubs it up, making it sound like Libbry Road, or something like that. I drive to Sacramento, which has alphabet-named streets. The Magellan consistently thinks that N Street is North Street, the same mistake that the Garmin made. I have not driven in an area where there are street names that are in a language other than English, so I have no idea how it handles (for example) Spanish street names, which are extremely abundant in some areas of California.
The biggest negative that I have found is that the device refuses to accept my home address as a valid address. The device has a range of address numbers that it thinks is valid for a zip code. If the number entered does not meet the range, the device refuses to accept it. I live in 95227, but the machine is positive that I live in 95220. That really irritates me, because that means that other people will potentially have a hard time finding my house if they are using a Magellan device. (The flip side of this is that Magellan responded very quickly when I complained about this issue, tested the problem, found that I was giving them correct information, and promised to report the problem to the map supplier.)
Another negative is that downloads from the Magellan site are only in a format that can be run on Windows machines. When I sent a sarcastic email to Magellan inquiring as to whether they were aware that a company called Apple has been manufacturing home computers for several years now I got a very prompt and very nice reply that did not seem to be a canned answer.Pros:
While the instruction book is on the thin side, a very complete set of instructions can be downloaded from the Magellan website.
The device took longer than my Garmin 285 to initially find satellites, but once the initial search was done the device finds the satellites very fast each time the car is started up. There is a display in the upper right hand corner that shows signal strength.
The device is intuitive and easy to set up. I found the Garmin 285 easier to set up, but not by much. First-time users of a GPS are not likely to have problems entering destinations into the device. If the car is turned off en route to a destination (as in "let's run into the grocery store and grab a bottle of milk") the GPS remembers where you were on the route, and picks up where you left off.
The warnings given on approaching a turn are MUCH better than the Garmin 285. The first warning comes at 2 miles from the turn, if possible. Another warning comes at a half-mile. Another warning says "Approaching turn (on right or left), and a chime sounds a few hundred feet from the actual turn. I like this feature a lot, especially in areas that are not well-lit at night. I live in a rural area, and sometimes small roads are very hard to see at night.
If a turn is missed, the chime will sound again at the next possible place you can turn, and the route is recalculated. The device does not announce that it is doing so, it just does. I have not encountered any problems when unexpectedly changing a route.
I also find that it calculates my route more efficiently than the Garmin 285.
There is a POI (Point of Interest) icon that displays when driving along major highways that helps you find the nearest gas stations, restaurants, etc. Additionally, AAA members can download AAA tour book information into the Roadmate, an extremely useful feature for road trips.
When the current location is displayed, the latitude and longitude are always displayed, so that info would be available to provide to an emergency responder without having to search around for it.
The display is extremely legible both in bright sunlight and at night. I had to turn the brightness down to the minimum because it was a bit too bright at night for my taste. The display has a night mode, wherein the road is displayed on a black background. One can also choose to change the orientation of the map so (1) North is always at the top, like on a traditional map, or (2) the direction you are traveling is the top of the map. Main Event: Traffic
I drive to Sacramento every work day, and go early enough in the morning that I rarely encounter serious traffic problems. I was actually glad to get caught in a traffic jam on Hwy 99 the other morning, so I could test out the Traffic feature. If the Roadmate detects a highway traffic warning, a red triangle appears on the screen, giving an estimated delay time. A flashing check mark appears on the screen. Touching the check mark gives you a list of alternate routes. Choose one of the alternates, and the device gives you a new set of directions. I have to tell you, this feature is fantastic. I avoided a horrible mess, and it only added a few minutes onto my expected commute time. If you don't like the alternate route you've chosen, there is a Cancel option in the main Menu, and you can select another alternate.
You don't have to punch in a destination in order to use the traffic feature. Just touch the triangular Traffic icon, and a list of traffic incidents will be displayed. No detour will be provided, however, when the device is used in this manner. If you are familiar with the area that won't be a problem. If you do need to have detour instructions, you will need to enter a destination.
Detours can also be found in the main Menu if you run into a traffic problem that is not on a freeway route. You can manually select the Detour button, and the Roadmate will find another route for you.
Main Event: Highway Lane Assist
What can I say? Awesome! This feature needs to be activated from Map Options in the main Menu. When approaching an interchange on a freeway, mock-ups of the freeway signs appear on the screen, and the one you need to take is shown brightly, the one you should not take is dimmed out. I love it. This feature helps you make an instant decision about what lane you need to be in.
Obviously, despite the few negatives, I really like this device! I can wholeheartedly recommend this device without reservation.

Garmin City Navigator for Detailed Maps of Major Metropolitan Areas in Europe (microSD/SD Card) Review

Garmin City Navigator for Detailed Maps of Major Metropolitan Areas in Europe (microSD/SD Card)

I bought the Micro SD cards because I thought it would be better so that all the maps are on the card and can just plug it into my GPS. However, if you want to download specific routes or biking routes which I have done, you have to also purchase Way Point Trip Manager in order to transfer the information. If you purchase the CD you can transfer the information with Map Source which is included with the GPS. Had I known that I would have had to purchase extra software to be able to transfer the information, I would have bought the CD's.
