Gryphon MV-VOLVO2 Monitor For Volvo S40-V50-C70 Review

Gryphon MV-VOLVO2 Monitor For Volvo S40-V50-C70

My Volvo dealership installed one of these into my 2007 V50 to provide video for my Alpine DVD navigation unit. The first screen lasted about one year and I discovered that it really wasn't made of materials that can withstand the sun beating on it through the windshield. (which is where it's designed to be installed.) Since I needed video for my nav unit I had to purchase another one of these since nothing else was available and the second one lasted nearly a year and half since I kept it covered whenever I parked the car. I don't want to purchase a third one so I've given up on using the navigation. The screen goes blank after such a short time that I wish I could give it no stars.

Kenwood Excelon DDX812 - DVD player with LCD monitor, AM/FM tuner, digital player Review

Kenwood Excelon DDX812 - DVD player with LCD monitor, AM/FM tuner, digital player

Bought at [...] about 3 months ago. I installed it myself, and it fit right into the double din space in my Nissan Xtrail. No additional mounting hardware was required. The install and hook up of most functions is straightforward. Note for the DIYers - there is a wire that hooks to your parking brake switch. If this is not connected, you cannot operate the DVD function while driving (or if the brake is disengaged). This is a safety feature which I bypassed. I am currently not using the TV, Rear view camera, GPS, CD changer and Aux A/V options as yet. Mine is only hooked into a two-amplifier system (with no additional processors).
The stereo can be used as a simple upgrade, or has the ability to use in a larger audio system without the need for additional processors. It has a built-in bluetooth handsfree feature that you can use your (A2DP-enabled) cell phone with it, and comes with an external mic that you can mount anywhere. I find that feature very cool and useful! Although my Motorola Razr V3i cannot work with it, any phone that has A2DP can be used with it. It also has IPOD connectivity - I do not own an Ipod - but for those who do - this is a convenient feature. It also has a second dedicated USB output for connecting a USB memory stick with your favourite songs. The stereo's software allows you to navigate through folders on the memory stick while a song is playing - which is freekin wayyy cool! I have a 2GB stick connected with my MP3's arranged by genre's - so I can switch between them seamlessly. There is a very very short delay in moving from song to song or folder to folder. However, when switching to USB from another function, it takes a few seconds to read the stick. Also - the stereo has to literally boot up when you start it. This takes about 10 secs - and you cannot access the controls until it is fully booted up. Also - let's say you were playing off the USB, and you turn the car off. When you start the car again - it takes maybe 15-20 secs before the music starts playing - because the stereo has to boot up, then read the USB - before it continues to play - but it remembers where it stopped - so you do not have to start over a song or so.
The remote control is big, and a bit awkward to use...and does not lend itself well to use without having to take your eyes off the road.
Crossover and equalizer functions are very versatile. You can adjust front and rear EQ's separately. There is also a Dual zone function - where you can have the front and rear speakers playing two different sources at the same time, and you can adjust the volume separately for each.
The unit has a built in fan at the back for cooling, and when you turn the car off, the fan runs for a few seconds for extra cooling, then shuts off. The screen has multiple tilt angles that you can set depending on where in your dash it is, and the amount of glare you are getting on the screen. It ranges from -1 to +5. The quality of the DVD playback is quite good for my taste.
Cons:
Only like 2 or three skins, no screensaver, each move when adjusting the equalizer causes a momentary mute in the music. Remote is cumbersome, and it takes a while to learn where the buttons are.
Overall - I'm extremely happy with the stereo. Worth every penny. However, if you want Nav, Sat radio, TV, etc., you will have to buy the optional extras also.

The Panasonic CY-RC50KU Universal Rear View Camera is a great addition to the Panasonic Indash GPS System. I drive a Toyota Tundra and it provides a great view when backing up. I feel much better knowing that I will not hit a small child or hit a low object that I can not see from the driver's seat.

This head unit is a great option for someone who wants an in-dash iPod (particularly iPhone) solution, but doesn't want to buy a more expensive navigation unit. The simple looks won me over initially, and if you've ever shopped for head units, you know that most on the market look absolutely ridiculous, and are apparently intended to be as obnoxious and blinky as possible. Although one major knock on the appearance of the FH-800BT is that the blue illumination is extremely bright, even after you enable dimming. Bright blue LED's are the bane of modern electronics. Its saving grace, however, is that you can actually shut off the display completely while it is operating, which is brilliant for long-distance late-night drives.
If you have ever used a Pioneer head unit, you will be immediately familiar with most of the settings. EQ, subwoofer, cross-fade, etc. are all there. Some Pioneer units have an adjustable parametric EQ, however this unit has a more straight-forward 7-band EQ. Otherwise, it's typical Pioneer, down to the trademark beep.
The sound quality is excellent all-around. Radio, CD, iPod, and Bluetooth A2DP all sound fantastic. There was a touch of hiss on Bluetooth audio at high volumes, but I think this is unavoidable. The "Audio Retriever" function supposedly mathematically restores audio lost from MP3 compression. It definitely makes a noticeable difference in the high frequencies without much detectable distortion added, but I think it's more a matter of personal preference.
iPhone connectivity is superb. I was able to pair the unit to my iPhone 3GS without a hitch, download the phone book, and make and receive calls without any problems at all. The included microphone is a little on the large side if you are trying to hide your install discreetly. However it works very well, and I had no trouble being heard on the other end at highway speeds, even though my car is not particularly quiet. Goodbye bluetooth headset! One minor note is my iPhone occasionally declares that the cable is not intended to be used with an iPhone and asks to be put into airplane mode. I disregard this message, and all features appear to work flawlessly.
A few things are completely unforgivable on this unit:
For example, "Telephone" REALLY does not need to be accessible via cycling through the "Source" button when there is a dedicated Telephone button right next to it.
The feel of the center knob is a bit flimsy, and center-clicking generally requires two-fingers to avoid pushing the knob left/right/up/down unless you push it dead center.
I wish they just added a few more dedicated buttons instead of burying features in the center-knob. There is a lot of empty space on the face of the unit, which would be great to have things like radio preset buttons (or phone quick-dial buttons). And since there are no dedicated radio preset buttons, why do they bother having 3 sets of FM presets? Couldn't they just put 18 presets in one place instead of forcing me to cycle through? And why does Audio Retriever need a dedicated button? That's a set-and-forget feature.
The iPod control, while generally very good, has a few nags. The unit allows you to alternate between "Song Shuffle", "Album Shuffle", and "Off" (buried in the center-knob functions), however when you tap the dedicated Shuffle button it seems to always jump back to "Song Shuffle". Hitting the button again does not turn shuffle off (as expected), but instead just re-shuffles your entire iPod and starts playing again. This is really a shame because I prefer to listen to my iPod on Album Shuffle mode, but the unit insists on jumping back to Song Shuffle. So instead, I leave Shuffle off. It's easy enough to browse for the albums I want anyways.
All in all, this is a very good head unit that is marred by a few flaws. If you can put up with the usability issues, then I highly recommend it. Otherwise, if you don't mind spending the money, I would look into a more fully-featured unit with navigation.

I got the kvt-512 along with the kna-510 installed in my 06 TSX. So far, all is good and no real complaint. The unit is loaded with features and options so what you can do with it is limitless. I have this unit connect through my factory head unit but the sound is still pretty good. The dvd is nice and clear and the navi works great. The touch screen is very responsive as well. I really like the fact that it plays mp3s off of a dvd. It is also convenient that it comes with a usb port to play mp3s off of. You can buy a ipod adaptor but why when you can get a cheap usb drive to play your music out of. I have it connected to a 8 gig thumb drive(bought for like $15) that I perminantly keep on there since it is plenty to hold all of my music.
You have to touch the screen on a unmarked location to activate the menu control options which is something I need to get used to. So far...I am definitely enjoying my new toy.

Jensen VM9312HD Multimedia Receiver with 7-Inch Touch Screen and HD Radio Tuner (Black) Review

Jensen VM9312HD Multimedia Receiver with 7-Inch Touch Screen and HD Radio Tuner (Black)

Well the Jenson has all you could want, an HD tuner (by itself outside msrp is 150$) so this is a cheap radio and tuner. Everything works great but i have to keep telling myself its not an ipod as the menu control sucks. its not really scrolling rather you see pages of music. you can not use folders on cds as they just combine it all. radio is spotty and it switches to analog more than i want and won't stay on digital only after i turn off the car (it resets to automatic ...). The biggest flaw is the cd player hissing and volume. the volume always resets when you turn on the system and it is really too loud though i set the master volume to 0. There is always hissing when the song is playing very soft. These things combine make me want to go with a better brand but heck i paid 100 bucks for installation of HD already and i do not think this tuner will work with other sets so it'll cost too much to take out and in. I might as well keep it...

Harley-Davidson® Bluetooth, Road Tech™, 2.0 Helmet System (See Video) Review

I bought one of these at a Harley dealer for 20% discount ($180). Testing it, I find that the volume goes very low when the Zumo switches from mp3 music to navigation directions. The volume so low means the first word or two can barely be heard. The volume returns, then when the Zumo switches back to the mp3 music, the same thing happens. That does not happen with my old Zumo 550. It isn't a Zumo 665 bug, as my phone bluetooth paired with the Zumo does not dim the volume. I got in touch with a KBC (US support) person who was waiting for a friend to bring a Zumo in so he could test it. A nice CSR, but clueless as to this problem. He never completed this trouble report. My conclusion, buy a Sena SMH10.

I bought and installed this head unit; it took 14 hours with all the cables, accessories, and removal of vehicle parts (seats, consoles, etc). Overall, the unit works well in all but one aspect. I have a rearview camera, gps, bluetooth, usb thumb, apple ipod, amp, and of course quality speakers connected. The only issue I have is with the BT100 I connected to it. Not sure though if it is the BT100, the interface with the 719, or just my cellphone compatability. It does take some patience getting all other accessories to interface correctly, and I wouldn't say the manual is great.
The screen is very good including the tilt feature and if you have a steady hand, you can use the little silver circular button controller. The remote is a plus too as it does many things; if you can remember all functions. A good compromise to higher end head units, and it fits all in 1-DIN with a removable faceplate.

Jensen VM9512 7-Inch Motorized Touch-Screen Multimedia Receiver Review

Jensen VM9512 7-Inch Motorized Touch-Screen Multimedia Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me say this - if you actually pay the $899.99 MSRP you'll be wasting a LOT of money. If you've gone through the effort to look for reviews of this product, then do some dedicated searching and you'll find online stores selling this product for around $420 (as of March of 2008.)
At $420, this unit is a decent value. I bought this stereo because I took a new position that forces me to live away from home and travel 10-hours round trip on the weekends. I wanted something that would allow me to play MP3's from a memory drive instead of messing with CD's. This stereo has an SD card input and a remote unit which can be mounted under your dash or elsewhere (within about 3 feet of the headunit) which provides a USB slot among other inputs. The SC card drive seems to have its issues. Jensen claims it can read up to a 4GB card, but it won't read mine. I read in an online forum that you have to have a particular brand of SD card, but I cannot confirm that. In my opinion, a 4GB card should be a 4GB card and it shouldn't matter who made it. However, if I plug the 4GB card into a USB adapter and plug it into the USB slot, it works just fine.
My issues come with the user interface. MP3 titles (of which I use almost exclusively) only present the first 15-or-so characters of each title on the screen. This means you can either see the track title, or the artists name, but not both. I have had to create clever file-titling tricks so that I can find the song I want. (For those interested, I rename each MP3 with the artists's first initial, a dash, the song title, a space-dash-space, and the full artist name. Ex: M-Push - Matchbox 20") This of course forced me to rename 200 mp3's... As Kevin James once put it, "A lot of work for nooooot that much fun..." In addition, you cannot use the up/down buttons on the unit or remote to scroll through songs WHILE a song is playing. Instead you have to press tiny buttons on the touch-screen to scroll, which often results in scrolling too far, accidentally selecting a song instead of pressing the button, or hitting the stop button, which is very close to the down-arrow. This is not to say that the Touch screen is innacurate - it is in fact just the opposite. Some of the buttons however are just a little too small.
A few other annoying attributes - there is no "randomize" button on the unit. The unit will randomly scan through your MP3's, but you have to select "Random" from your remote control. I cannot fathom why they didn't give that option on the unit's face or screen. Sometimes the unit cannot decide whether to open its screen when you turn the car on - sometimes it will, sometimes it won't. The "autodim" feature seems completely inoperable. This forces you to change the brightness of the screen every day and night. The DVD player often seems to get confused, and sometimes will show disc errors or take at least a solid minute before beginning playback. This will cause you to insert a disc and forget that you did so by the time it starts playing. This especially seems to be an issue when the unit has gotten hot after extended use. The bluetooth interface with phones is easy to set up and use, but very limited in it's usage. I would like it to notify me when I receive text messages, and I have read (though not experienced) that if you have the volume low or muted, you will not hear when a phone call comes in.
Many users have complained about the screen being washed out by sunlight, but I say "What do you expect?" It's a screen. Take your TV or monitor outside in bright sunlight and tell me how well you can see it. Turn the brightness all the way up and tilt the screen down and you can usually see it well enough.
So why four stars? Well, this unit pretty much does everything it says it will do, and it does it pretty easily, without much fussing, and does it all at a reasonable price (again, read the first paragraph.) It has already provided plenty of entertainment during 20+ hours of driving and quite frankly, I still think it's "pretty cool." Find a product that does everything "just right" and you'll pay this unit's MSRP plus a lot more.
Do note that any desire to drive recklessly on the highway because you're watching "KITT" engage the Super Pursuit Mode on an episode of Knight Rider is not the fault of Jensen, myself, or David Hasselhoff.

05-08 FORD RADIO CAN BUS MODULE INTERFACE Review

05-08 FORD RADIO CAN BUS MODULE INTERFACE

Worked great to wire up a new Pioneer GPS into our 2006 Ford Explorer. It allowed us to wire everything while sitting in the kitchen at the table. Lot's easier than hanging my head under a dash. We connected all the wires from this unit to the wiring harness supplied with the new head unit. I then brought the parts out to the truck and plugged everything in.
This unit allows control of the factory subwoofer, connects the emergency brake wire to the GPS (Needed for all aftermarket GPS head units), and even signals when the headlights are so the head unti dims and changes the GPS display to nighttime mode.
This unit is a must if you are going to install a new radio into a late model Ford car or truck. Yup, it costs nearly $100, but the time you save in wiring is priceless. I was able to install the new radio in less than 90 minutes......and I am not a professional installer.

I recently purchased this for a 08 Toyota Camry and 05 Tundra w/ NAV. I have the USA spec adapter in my tundra now and I have to say I am pretty dissappointed that it stopped working they I wanted it to (no more playlist option) as soon as Apple did an update to their ipod line. The PXAMG installed fairly easily and is firmware updateable which I like. I made sure to run the latest firmware update which it already had and the customer service was great confirming all my questions through the install. Two thumbs up for this product.

I wanted an car radio/CD and cassette player.I am happy with purchase. Unfortunately it does not have a carousel for more than one CD. A bit difficult to work it but that usually takes time.

USA SPEC PA11-HON2 - iPod in-vehicle interface adapter Review

USA SPEC PA11-HON2 - iPod in-vehicle interface adapter

I was a bit skeptical of this product but decided to take a chance on it. The installation was fairly easy on my wife's 2006 Honda Odyssey. The radio had to come out but that was easy and the USA Spec hooked up in the back with the correct plug. We've been using it for about 2 months and we are very pleased. The sound quality is perfect and it keeps the ipod charged. It also turns it on and off when you would expect (like when you turn off the car). Very nice.

Jensen VM9423 Double DIN 6.5 Touchscreen Multimedia System Review

Jensen VM9423 Double DIN 6.5 Touchscreen Multimedia System

I was drawn by the low price tag with the features packed into this unit. Once I installed this unit, the unit would not load a DVD/CD. So, did a little research to try to diagnose the problem and discovered that Jensen isn't that great of a brand. Couldn't get the DVD/CD to work, so I return the item. If you decide to buy the unit, one thing that you should do is add about a half inch or so to the depth of the unit. The unit has about 18 wires hardwired into the back left. In order to not bend the wires, it would be wise to ensure that there is more clearance for these wires. The installation manual is available at Jensen's web site so you can see what I'm talking about.

Tom Tom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver Review

Tom Tom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this antenna for a couple of weeks now, and it only retrieved traffic info for two days. Since then, it connects to either of two radio stations in Atlanta and reports "no delays on route", even when I'm stuck in a two-hour traffic jam on I-285. Switching stations results in the "green dot" on the traffic monitor, and a further result of "no delays on route".
Several calls to TomTom tech support have been fruitless. The last time, they claimed their traffic server was down indefinitely. That would be bad enough, but the RDS-TMC information is not controlled by TomTom's service, it comes from Clear Channel's Traffic Network. The traffic server is only for their GPRS/Mobile Phone/TomTom Plus traffic service.
I had tried the TomTom Plus service prior to ordering the antenna, and it worked fairly well (when the traffic server was up) but I found the $19.95/month charge that T-Mobile added on to my bill to be a bit excessive when this antenna was supposed to do a comparable job.
I'm sending it back. If it was just an intermittent outage, I could understand that. Two solid weeks of "no traffic on route" while sitting in the I-285 parking lot for thirty-seven miles each way is ridiculous.

The TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver works by using TMC (Traffic Message Channel) technology. The receiver acquires information through an FM radio signal broadcast by regional providers. By simply connecting the new TomTom GO device to the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver, users will automatically receive traffic information via the TMC connection. Once a trip is planned, traffic alerts are clearly displayed in the traffic bar on the right hand side of the screen. When users tap the traffic bar, they receive further information, such as accident or traffic jam delays. The RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is compatible with the new TomTom GO 920 range, TomTom GO 720, TomTom ONE XL and TomTom ONE 3rd EDITION and provides seamless integration of RDS-TMC Traffic information with the user interface of the TomTom GO and ONE product ranges.

Wonderful product when it works. When it doesn't you can't get any support. Unless you want to call the United Kingdom and pay $1 a minute. I feel like I've been had.
