Garmin nüvi 1350 Series 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)Overall, I am very satisfied with the Garmin nuvi 1350 but I do have a couple of minor complaints.

First of all, I do recommend that owners/potential buyers visit the Garmin web site to read through all of the product information and to review the FAQs. Some folks have made an issue of Garmin not including the USB cable with the device but this did not matter to me. The required cable is a standard type "A" to mini "B" USB cable. Many other devices use this same cable and I already own a couple of them. (I also heard that if you contact Garmin customer service, they may send you a cable at no charge.) Other reasons to visit the Garmin site: to register the product, to download the full PDF manual and to install the "my Garmin Agent Plugin" for web updates.

Next, my quibbles:
When the 1350 is plugged into a charging device (PC or vehicle), there is no way to determine when the unit is fully charged. This is very inconvenient. To view the charge level, you have to unplug the device and turn it on. Only then can you see the battery level. According to the Garmin FAQs, charge time is about 4 hours using the vehicle cable and 8 hours using the PC cable.
One of the features of the 1350 is the speed limit display. However, I find this to be of limited value. The speed display is frequently 5 to 10 mph too high compared with the actual posted speeds on the roads being traveled. As a result, this throws off the estimated destination arrival time.

Finally, why I am impressed:
When driving with the 1350, I never had any doubt where I was at any given time and I never had any doubt what my next maneuver would be (and isn't this the bottom line of any GPS?). The voice commands have plenty of volume, are easy to understand and they also give you adequate lead time for upcoming turns. The commands will also repeat but the voice is not annoying. Several times, I deliberately missed a turn to test how the 1350 would respond. It quickly calculated a revised route based on my current location.
I also found the screen to be clear and easy to see while driving (in bright sun, shade and at night).
The full manual states that a PDA type stylus can be used for the touch screen. I found this to be convenient (I'm actually using a stylus from a Nintendo DS.) While you can certainly use your finger on the screen, this will leave fingerprints and smudges on the screen.

Other notes:
I have the 1350 sitting on my dash with the Garmin "Portable Friction Mount" - highly recommended.
My 1350 came with a free case - the Caselogic MGPS-2. This case adequately protects the 1350 when it's not being used.

Overall, this has been a great purchase for my business travels and I would rate the unit as four and a half stars.

The screen is clear to read, even in direct sunlight, the directions are accurate, the lane assist feature is very valuable, and I have not have any problems or issues with it at all. The text to speech feature is so accurate and well-pronounced that I don't even need to look at the screen a vast majority of the time. Also like the slim design and the sturdy, easy-to-use windshield mount.

(More customer reviews)I like this gps, which was purchased (refurbished) through Amazon. I received this gps about two weeks ago and tested it last week on an 800 plus mile drive from Temecula,CA, to Felton,CA. I was unable to distinguish this gps from a new one, in appearance or in performance. The only reason for 4 stars rather than 5, was I was unable to have the lady "directeur" repeat instructions at will, which I was able to do with my previous Garmin. . The repeatability is not only good company, but important to this WW II veteran with noise damaged hearing. If there is a way to have her recite on request, I would appreciate the information. Thank you.

(More customer reviews)I picked up the Garmin 1350T Refurbished for just over $125 on sale, and what a steal it was. When I got the unit, it was like brand new. The only clue to it being refurbished is the plain white box the unit comes in. Of the several Garmin nuvi's I've had over the years, this one is by far the best having the most responsive touchscreen and fastest OS. It locks on to the satellites much quicker than previous models, the lane assist works great and the lifetime traffic is a must have. I was even able to go to Garmin's website and update the firmware and upgrade to the latest 2011.10 maps.
So far I couldn't be happier with the Garmin 1350T and love the fact I save much $$$ going with the refurbished model. I would highly recommend the 1350T and highly recommend going with the refurbished models to save some cash.

(More customer reviews)If you're looking for a Garmin with basic GPS functions, you may want to consider the nuvi 1300.
It works as advertised, but is missing a lot of features found in other GPS models for a lot less cash. A traffic receiver is available from Garmin for a $118, however check out other Garmin models which have this receiver included. A speed limit sign is not available in this model, but can be found on the 1350, $50 more than this one. A USB cable which is inexpensive to buy, should have been included.
Bluetooth is another recommended feature. In the 1300 series, you have to go up to the 1370T model to get both Bluetooth and traffic receiver included--at an additional $200 over the price of the 1300!
A more sensible solution would be to go to another Garmin model like the 265WT which includes: (1) FM traffic receiver, (2) USB cable, (3) Bluetooth compatibility, and (4) Speed limit info. The 265WT is currently on Amazon for $30 LESS than the 1300 but loaded with all these features and latest mapping software.
Yes, the nuvi 1300 works as advertised, but is just not the value GPS that you can find in other models.

Cons: No prepare route, limited alternative route options, no USB-to-miniUSB cable for computer hookup I bought this GPS for a planned trip to France, the smaller size (fits better in my pocket) and text-to-speech feature, along with SD mapcard capability were my reasons. I have had the Nuvi 1200 for 3 days and the adjustment from Tomtom think to Nuvi think has been relatively painless.
The suction cup mount (with its lever application) is a definite upgrade from the Tomtom. Also the auto detection for day/night mode is nice. Satellite performance seems even better than the Tomtom, and Tomtom has great reception. The map screen is bright and uncluttered, my wife says it is noticeably sharper. So far the maps seem to be comprehensive, won't really know until I use the Nuvi more.
The only things I miss (and/or could not find) was the ability to plan a trip when you were not at that location (Tomtom has a "Prepare Route" option that allows you to specify the departure point)and the ability to easily avoid a road when you start out (Tomtom has a "Find Alternative" option which allow 6 options such as "Avoid Roadblock", "Travel Via", "Calculate Alternative", etc.). Nuvi does have a "Detour" option that shows its alternatives to a selected route but they can only be selected, not tweeked by the user.
While it is not a big deal is seems like for the current price ($200) that the Nuvi could include a USB-to-miniUSB cable. After all this is not a $69 no-name GPS. And it is clear that Garmin/Nuvi expects you to hook up to a computer, there is software on the Nuvi so you can register your Nuvi at their website, also this is how you get your one free map update.
My wife and I were also both puzzled by one small Nuvi human factor mistake. We were trying to enter a numerical address (i.e 20th St) and after entering "20th" the Nuvi presented a two item list:
20th (Ave NE, Ave NW, Ave SE, Ave SW
20th Ave Ln NW
We were stumped for a while, where is 20th Street!! It turns out that you need to select "20th (Ave NE, Ave NW, Ave SE, Ave SW". After you do, you will be presented with all the "20th" options, including 20th Street.
Note that specifying "20th St" resulted on a "No matches found": error message!
