GPS TOUCH SCREEN NEXTAR Review

GPS TOUCH SCREEN NEXTAR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these M3-02 units and I have been using it for about a month now. Magellan, Garmin, Tom-Tom...whatever! I will still carry a map with me. I paid $79.99 for this NEW...never opened... from a retailer. I would not pay any more than this for ANY of these items.
The M3-02 is easy to use and the touch screen responds nicely to either stylus or finger. The display is bright enough to see it in the daytime and the voice has good clarity. I will be using this unit on dark and stormy nights when you cannot read street names...or if I get lost, it will always get me home.
I am giving this a 4 star rating because the Nextar customer service/support is horrible. There may be upgraded maps available sometime in April, 2009

GARMIN 010-00718-20 N;VI® 255W WIDESCREEN TRAVEL ASSISTANT Review

GARMIN 010-00718-20 N;VI® 255W WIDESCREEN TRAVEL ASSISTANT
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The 255W is a replacement for our Garmin nuvi 360, which was stolen from our car. We wanted something basic that fits our budget. It has a few improvements over our old Garmin:
- Wide screen
The main advantage of the wide screen is it's able to accommodate a Qwerty Keyboard. Data entry with the Qwerty keyboard on the 255W is much faster and easier. (On our 360, which doesn't have a wide screen, the data entry is done with a series of keys arranged in alphabetical order - a real pain!)
- Locates Satellites Quickly
The 255W finds satellites very quickly (usually under a minute) and locks on to them. The only time it's lost a signal is when we were in an underground parking garage. Otherwise, we don't have an issue with the device acquiring or locking on to satellite signals.
- Responsive Touch Screen
The touch screen is very responsive. It is more sensitive and accurate than the one on our old 360.
- Fast
The startup time is fast. It's ready to go after I start the car. The map redrawing after the map is dragged is a lot snappier.
The user interface is intuitive and user-friendly. The volume is loud enough, even on the Freeway.
The device has never failed to bring us to our destination. It is sleek and attractive and will fit in your pocket. If you need a basic but reliable GPS, the Garmin 255W is definitely worth consideration.
Other Garmin models you might be interested in looking at:
- Garmin nuvi 265W/265WT
- Garmin nuvi 765/765T
These units are traffic-aware and can route you to avoid congested roads. They come with a built-in traffic receiver and a lifetime subscription to traffic information.
If you decide on the 255W, shop around to get the best price.

I highly discourage any buyer from this item. The holder is extremely flimsy and does not hold the Garmin Nuvi correctly. I tried mounting it on the windshield and in the circular donut dash holder and everything fell over once I turned a corner. The dashmount stays put but the holder is very very cheaply made.

Lowepro Navi Traveler Protective Case for GPS (Black) Review

Lowepro Navi Traveler Protective Case for GPS (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a big fan of portable GPS receivers. I have owned close to a dozen units over the years and currently have about six. Some I use some for hiking or geocaching and others I use when driving or traveling.
After choosing a model and mounting accessory that's right for you the next important decision is finding a protective case that's going to hold everything that you need to take with you. There are plenty of nice cases made for hand-held GPS's but when it comes to automotive units it's much harder the find the right one.
I really like this case from Lowe Pro. It's big enough to hold your GPS, the power cord, a window or friction mount and a few other small accessories yet is still small enough to travel with. I would prefer one a little smaller but then it probably wouldn't hold every thing. I really nice feature is that the exterior pocket (the one that holds the GPS) is padded on both sides for extra protection.
I thought that a video review would help potential buyers to get a better idea as to whether this case would work for them or not. Thanks!

Garmin GTM 10 FM Traffic Receiver Review

Garmin GTM 10 FM Traffic Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This item is a lifesaver! Well, at least a timesaver.
When connected to a compatible Garmin GPS (like the 2720), it will graphically alert you to traffic issues on your route and in your area.
No more waiting to hear the traffic on the radio, it is realtime.
If an accident is located on the road you are currently travelling, it will alert you with an icon that allows you to choose to remain on your current path, or detour.
If the accident is located further ahead on your route, but not on the same road you are currently on, it will automatically change your route without any intervention from you.
The only downside is the small number of cities that currently utilize the traffic info, and some of the smaller roads in those cities don't have coverage. But the ones that do make up for it.
If you are in a city that is covered, this is a must-have item.

It's hard to review a product when it hasn't even shipped yet--despite the fact that the last day of the Amazon delivery estimate was today. This is the first time I am getting a part of my order from a third party (Databazaar in this case) without knowing it ahead of time, and it hasn't gone well... Obviously, the 1-star rating is not for the product, but for the shipper!

On the first speed bump I hit, the cradle left the mount, thank God there was no traffic on the road and I was able to pick up my GPS before it got run over, I used some rubber tape to secure the cradle in the ball and then while going over a railroad track, the whole ball came off the mount. The one that looks like a zip tie works much better.

Here is a great mount for the Garmin Nuvi. Excellent value on a heavy duty handlebar mount that fits handlebars up to 1 inches. We even include rubber strips so that this mount can be used for much smaller handlebars. This can be easily removed. This uses the cradle that came with your GPS. DISCREET. Easy to install on two exsisting vehicle screws. Vehicle specific. My GPS is NOT in the way of my dash controls!
The packaging was nice, small, and the box had a vehicle specific code on it that I entered at www.pro-fit-intl.com and was able to print off a visual and step by step directions on how to install this mount in my new Ford F-150. It came with the VSM G3 mount, an A Plate (that I did not need for my Garmin model), and a J stem that attatched to the mount for me to rotate my garmin around to my liking. I forgot to order the trim tool. But my trim came off super easy.
I did need the needle nose pliers, just like pro-fits directions said. Because I could not just put the trim back into the "clicky-slots". I had to pull the 8 little metal tension clips out of my vehicles consol holes, push them securely onto my plastic trims prongs...then push the whole trim piece back on until all 8 clicked in secure. No big deal. I paid $25 plus shipping for this.

Garmin nuvi 880 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin nuvi 880 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using the Nuvi 880 GPS for a couple of weeks now, and it is the best Garmin unit to date, and possibly the portable/handheld/car GPS available at this time. The Garmin Nuvi GPS units are probably the easiest to start using out of the box without reading any manuals.
The new line of Nuvi units have done away with the small flip-up antenna, opting for a internal antenna which is much nicer. This GPS is also VERY thin and can be carried in your jeans pocket (front pocket-without the leather case/protector) if you're traveling in another country. Because the 880 has done away with the external antenna, it also maintains the same thin dimensions for the length of the backside of the unit, finally losing that small bulge as on the back of the 670 (and other 600-series) Nuvi units.
The speech recognition is about 90% accurate, but this may be due to the higher amount of road noise in my car (and/or the air conditioner fan noise). When it's quiet, however, the voice recognition is surprisingly accurate.
The ability to have a user-changeable battery is featured on the 880. I can't tell you how many times I wish I had this feature with our Nuvi 670 on our trip to Italy when we were out all day on foot and the GPS battery became depleted, (though it did last for 5-6 hours). The only thing lacking is that Garmin should sell some sort of external battery charger for the extra batteries rather having to charge them in the unit itself.
Another reviewer mentioned that the Garmin doesn't have intelligent street recognition (such as with Google) to ask the user if a different spelling for a street/highway was intended when the unit doesn't return any results with the spelling it was given. This is not true, and perhaps that reviewer should have another read of the documentation to understand this. If you provide a partial text street or highway name to the Garmin it will return a list of possible matches. The Nuvi 880 works slightly different than previous Nuvi models in that the earlier models would provide an "active lookup", listing the possible matches as soon as the user had typed enough characters to determine a match. The 880, however, allows the user to provide (enter) the partial or full street/intersection AND THEN it will display a list of possible matches. This works a little more efficiently than the previous models because it allows the system to do a single fast search, rather than searching after each letter, and it allows the user to correct any typing mistakes before searching on them.
Another nice feature of the Garmin unit is that the virtual keyboard for spelling can be QWERTY style now.
The built in MP3 player is fun. For example if you have a music (or any MP3) that you want to hear via the car's stereo, you simply tune the FM radio to an unused station and configure the Garmin to output to the FM transmitter. Music and guidance prompts will be played via the car stereo. This is also nice for extremely noisy car environments if the Garmin's (loud) volume isn't enough, then the GPS prompts can be played via the car stereo. Other utilities on the 880 are very helpful, such as the unit and currency converters.
I've also tried the TomTom units, which I found to be slower in computing routes, and having far too many user configurable options. If you want to spend hours "customizing" all of the screen colors and every other aspect of your GPS, then maybe a TomTom would be a good choice for you. However, if you want an easy-to-use unit, the Garmin is a better choice.
The screen brightness can be set by the user, but 70-80% will suffice in all but the highest glare situations, and the large screen is very clear.
With ANY touch-screen device I always recommend purchasing clear screen protector sheets. These clear sheets stick via friction (no residue), and will help to greatly extend the life of your GPS or other product.
Lastly, another very nice feature on the 880 is the addition of MSN Direct which I renewed the subscription to a lifetime (guaranteed until 2012) extension for about $120 flat (there are other renewal options available). One of the best features of MSN Direct is updated traffic reports sent to your GPS. Even while not navigating a route, and simply viewing the map, a traffice "incident" icon will show on the display if a traffic event lies ahead in the direction you're traveling in case you want to have your GPS route you around the traffice. MSN Direct also features such things as a little icon for weather warnings on your GPS, full weather for your location, a selection to pop up a quick list of gas prices/station near your location, another selection to pop up a quick list of movie times listed by theater or movie title, news, stocks, local events. It is a very nice feature.
All in all this is one of the best portable GPS units available currently.

Navman N40i NavPix 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Average Reviews:

I've used it for a couple days now and couldn't be more please. I base my review against my previous GPS, TomTom Navigator 6 for PDA. Compared to It, the navman is much better. The interface is very simple to use (really, if you can't figure this out, you have issues). The maps show great detail and accuracy such as adjacent street names and house/street name of where you're currently driving by. So far, POI are accurate in the WashDC/Arlington/Fairfax area. Calculates/recalculates in a few seconds. Also acquires sat signal in 5 or less seconds of powering on.
It does not have text to speech but it does read out streets that have numbers such as "Route one twenty three" and "exit seventy one ahead". which is great for major streets and highways (tomtom just says exit right in 70yrds).
I like to give props to the Picture feature. Its more useful then what most reviews think. Its not just "a cool addition". For example, Have a traffic accident or on the road and see suspicious vehicle or incidents, just start hitting the camera button and it takes pictures very quickly continuously. Great for police and insurance purposes. Beats most cellphone cameras and is much quicker to use and inconspicuous) Who's gonna argue a pic with GPS coordinates on it! Resolution is good and clear in day and dawn, lens adjusts pretty well at night and to different light types (light bulbs etc).
You can also take a picture to tag the location of your regular digital camera pictures, then use services like Flickr, Mappr etc to have a cool map albums.
Also, navigating by selecting a picture is much easier then selecting it out of your favorites list. Bottom line, the camera is a nifty idea! I could careless to have an MP3 player on it (you prob already own an iPod or player of some sort), dictionary and all the other galore of useless half working features that others have and jack the price up over 500.00. Its a car navigation GPS, not a UMPC!
My only gripe is that the desktop software is currently not "FULLY" compatible with vista. I got it to work after trial/error. You need to uninstall Active Sync (Vista has its own version of this preinstalled). You need it to push updates (check navman site).
Navma, for future - VIDEO! why not? let us pop in a high capacity SD card and film away some nice 640x480 video clips! Cellphones can, you too!
This GPS does the job car navigation wise. Gets you places or out of places in your car, if thats what you need, get this one! If you walk, hike a lot, you're looking at an apple instead of an orange.
Navigate away!

The Zagg GPS screen shield, although it was precut to fit the Garmin Nuvi 1490, was very hard to apply to the screen. It readily picked up fingerprints during the attempted install. it also captured a large number of air bubbles that I was unable to coax out from under the shield with the included squeegee. Ultimately, I bought a less expensive, generic screen shield at an office supply store, cut it to size, and installed it with much greater success. Unless you are a brain surgeon with a spotless work space and and array of forceps and probes, I suggest passing on this product for a less expensive, generic alternative.

Garmin nüvi 850 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Voice Command and FM Transmitter (Soft Black)
Average Reviews:

Well my original monochrome Streetpilot was called back into action but I couldn't get new maps for it. That unit still works perfect after 10 years and is used frequently on canoe trips since it's waterproof to 3ft and can use batteries.
So I needed a GPS that could handle 100hrs of usage per week and have a replaceable battery with good routing and a music player that transmits to the car stereo would be nice.
After 4 months/1600hrs usage I have not been disappointed. Maps are great, it's found 895/900 addresses in the Chicago suburbs and never complained of sitting in the direct sun all day. I have a deep voice and the voice recognition works surprisingly well for me with the windows up in a noisy van. A nice feature would be able to increase the priority of highways, quite often it suggests me taking a more direct route that is slower, since traffic usually moves well over the posted speed. I am happy that the unit offers Flat Map Viewing with the option of Track Up or North Up, the 3D view just isn't for me. The FM transmitter sends my music nicely to the radio and has a volume mixer that will announce directions while playing the music and gives me a heads up about when approaching heavy traffic (MSN Direct receiver). Another nice feature is that you can use the button on the steering wheel to control all the functions of the gps including changing the volume or skipping to the next track or play list. My dashboard is fairly free of clutter since there is only one wire that plugs in the cradle. Another routing feature I use frequently is the ability to avoid Tolls. You Can detour by roads in the route or by distance, a few reviews posted said that it wasn't an option. Apparently Garmin listened and implemented it for free with it's painless updating.
You can change the vehicle that moves across the map (changed mine to a canoe lol) and the voices for free. Tom Tom wants money for it. The MSN Direct Receiver pays for itself by showing gas prices in the area. The games even the demos are good enough to keep the kids busy for a while. The calculator comes in handy at times but the best feature about this GPS is it's reliable. :-)

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all the good news. The display and automatic panning on the Tom Tom 910 are second to none. It is MUCH more visible than the Garmin Nuvi 350 and the automatic panning works much better. The actual mapping algorithms seemed to be approximately the same in both units neither, insofar as I was able to determine, having much of an advantage over the other. Mapping details on both units are excellent. Bright light visibility is outstanding - much better than the Nuvi.
The unit, compared to the Nuvi 350 and 360 is considerably larger and more cumbersome. Additionally, the mounting solution on the Nuvi is slightly better than that on the 910 - more compact. The voice prompts are loud, clear and timely. The ease of use is just great (with the exception of the POI implementation) and the visibility and quality of the display are great.
The bad news: POI access is cumbersome and poorly implemented. Hopefully a firmware upgrade will fix this problem in the near future. As it stands now, you cannot enter the name of the POI that you wish to go to without going through an intervening category screen made even more cumbersome by the fact that you may guess the category wrong! Then, the POIs only come up in alphabetical order or by distance. For me, this particular deficiency was the deal breaker. Selecting a POI must be as simple as possible in a AIO (all in one) GPS navigation solution. There are so many capabilities that you give up in these simplified AIO solutions that they should perform their designated functions easily and efficiently. The Nuvi does this, the 910 does not. The nuvi allows you to search POIs by name. The TomTom 910 does not.
This device is intended as an extremely simple point to point navigating AIO GPS navigation solution and is not intended to enable the use of way points or easily changing the course selected by the unit. You have essentially two options: the shortest route and the fastest route. Fortunately, the mapping program selects routs that are very acceptable. Personally, I like to look at the overall route and fiddle with it. This unit is not designed for such use. Microsoft Streets and Trips is ideal for this kind of tinkering, but terrible for point to point navigation while on the go.
Make sure and get the most recent firmware updates on the Tom Tom website which will fix the known bugs and further improve the functionality.
I give this unit a 3 star on form (compared to the elegant Nuvi), a 4 star on the functionality for which it was designed, and a 5 star on the beautiful bright display. You will not be disappointed in the beautiful display, the automatic panning, the actual map functionality or the bright light performance. But the POI solution is cumbersome and frustrating.

Hope you don't mind digging in and learning how to use this on your own because it appears that the original instructions were created in a foreign language and the interpretation leaves much to be desired. Other than that it does do the job. The extra features of being able to load an SD card and listen to MP3's and watch videos is very cool. If you just want a GPS go for a Tom Tom.

I purchased the Portable Dashboard Friction Mount for my Garmin nuvi GPS because it can be easily put in place and removed with no mechanical hassle. The GPS bracket is included, so I don't need to remove the bracket from my other car when I move the GPS. It leaves no trace that would attract a thief who might break in to my car looking for a GPS in my glove compartment. It also looks like it would fit on top of the dashboard of any car I might rent while traveling.
The tradeoff is that the heavy, bulky base is not conducive to packing in a carry-on bag. This friction mount, though smaller than the Garmin beanbag style, is still pretty massive. Also, it places the GPS higher above the dashboard than a windshield suction cup or a dashboard vent mount. The higher mounting location blocks a more important spot in my field of view. One of our two cars is a sporty model with a raked-back windshield. The friction mount doesn't fit on the dashboard because the top of the bracket bumps against the windshield.
The bottom line: If you want a convenient mount, somewhat portable and/or usable by someone with zero mechanical savvy, this one works.

Place the mount on any stable surface, and adjust the position of your GPS to your liking. The friction mount weighs enough to keep your device put on the dash, even when sudden maneuvers are necessary. It's ideal for states in which the use of windshield suction mounts is illegal.
