Navman N40i NavPix 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Navman N40i NavPix 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I've used it for a couple days now and couldn't be more please. I base my review against my previous GPS, TomTom Navigator 6 for PDA. Compared to It, the navman is much better. The interface is very simple to use (really, if you can't figure this out, you have issues). The maps show great detail and accuracy such as adjacent street names and house/street name of where you're currently driving by. So far, POI are accurate in the WashDC/Arlington/Fairfax area. Calculates/recalculates in a few seconds. Also acquires sat signal in 5 or less seconds of powering on.
It does not have text to speech but it does read out streets that have numbers such as "Route one twenty three" and "exit seventy one ahead". which is great for major streets and highways (tomtom just says exit right in 70yrds).
I like to give props to the Picture feature. Its more useful then what most reviews think. Its not just "a cool addition". For example, Have a traffic accident or on the road and see suspicious vehicle or incidents, just start hitting the camera button and it takes pictures very quickly continuously. Great for police and insurance purposes. Beats most cellphone cameras and is much quicker to use and inconspicuous) Who's gonna argue a pic with GPS coordinates on it! Resolution is good and clear in day and dawn, lens adjusts pretty well at night and to different light types (light bulbs etc).
You can also take a picture to tag the location of your regular digital camera pictures, then use services like Flickr, Mappr etc to have a cool map albums.
Also, navigating by selecting a picture is much easier then selecting it out of your favorites list. Bottom line, the camera is a nifty idea! I could careless to have an MP3 player on it (you prob already own an iPod or player of some sort), dictionary and all the other galore of useless half working features that others have and jack the price up over 500.00. Its a car navigation GPS, not a UMPC!
My only gripe is that the desktop software is currently not "FULLY" compatible with vista. I got it to work after trial/error. You need to uninstall Active Sync (Vista has its own version of this preinstalled). You need it to push updates (check navman site).
Navma, for future - VIDEO! why not? let us pop in a high capacity SD card and film away some nice 640x480 video clips! Cellphones can, you too!
This GPS does the job car navigation wise. Gets you places or out of places in your car, if thats what you need, get this one! If you walk, hike a lot, you're looking at an apple instead of an orange.
Navigate away!

Garmin GPS Nuvi 255w Accessory Bundle - Car Charger + Home Travel AC Charger + USB Data Cable Review

I ordered these to put into a second vehicle, and to charge my new GPS from wall outlets. Neither the car charger nor the wall charger would charge the GPS. The GPS reacted to being plugged in as if it were plugged into a USB cable to a computer, or cycled through an attempt to open maps.

Garmin Red nüvi 205W 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin Red nüvi 205W 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this unit for about 8 months. It has given me no problems what so ever. The bad thing about it for me is how basic it is. If you want bluetooth compatibility, traffic updates, movie times, etc on your GPS, then this is not the device for you. But if all you want is to get around and find places, then this unit will work well.
The price seems a little high right now for what it does ($167). For that price I would expect bluetooth compatibility. This unit does not say the road names, it just says turn left or turn right in 200 feet(not a big deal). When you look places up, it has their phone number and address (usually) which is nice because if its late at night, you can call first to see if they are still open.
This GPS has an SD card reader on the side, which can be used to view pictures in slideshow mode when you don't need the unit for navigation.
The screen is very bright during the day, so you can easily see the screen. And a nice feature is that when it gets dark, the screen automatically changes colors to 'night' mode, which helps when driving at night (the screen dims and the bright white background colors change to dark blues and blacks).
The trip features are nice. It keeps track of your average speed, how long you spent moving, how long you spent stopped, total travel time, how many miles you've gone, etc.
It takes about a minute to a minute and a half to find your location from a cold start, but if you leave it powered all the time (with a car in which the cig lighter stays on when you turn the car off) it never loses the location (not sure if that is bad for it).
The battery life is very good (about 4-5 hours).
There are many add-ons that a technologically advanced person can add to it. Such as custom points of interest (you can download them or even make your own, and you can set alerts so that it warns you when you are close to a certain place or when you are speeding in a school zone). You can add different vehicle icons to use as the car on the screen.
Overall, it is a decent, but very basic navigation device. Not many bells or whistles, but it gets you from point A to point B well.

Garmin StreetPilot 3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin StreetPilot 3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We used the StreetPilot driving from Houston, Texas to the mountains of Santa Fe, New Mexico and were impressed with its features and flexibility. Simple to start up, easy to read but takes practice to learn all the options and there are many options.
Although there is not enough detail in the maps to be really useful, it does provide a ton of information besides just maps and latitude and longitude. For example, time of day, altitude, miles per hour, avg mph, distance traveled, time traveled, time to destination, a compass, several alarm systems and optional personal way points. It is compact and portable as well as easy to read. If you are the passenger (definitly not as the driver), the StreetPilot can be as addictive as a computer game.
A one star deduction since with the GPS prices falling as they are, this one seems a tad expensive especially since the useful optional cartridges are a hundred bucks a pop. It would be nice if the manufacturer included the power adapter and one cartridge in this price.

ZAGG invisibleSHIELD MIOC520 for Mio C520 Screen (Clear) Review

ZAGG invisibleSHIELD MIOC520 for Mio C520 Screen (Clear)

Protects screen, BUT, too hard to apply, shield slightly too large and since mio screen in recessed, couldn't get it to fit flat. Also makes it too difficult to squeegee. Also felt I had to get shield too wet to get it into place, so was worried about getting moisture into the device.

Garmin nüvi 200W GPS Automobile Receiver (Refurbished) Review

Garmin nüvi 200W GPS Automobile Receiver (Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Disclaimer -- I actually received a TomTom unit as a gift, and after messing with their website to update my maps, the unit locked up and had to be returned. I opted to return it for credit and buy a Garmin. What a difference!
I simply plugged it in, watched it download current maps from the satellite (I think) and started using it. Easy to use, easy to understand.
Before I take a trip I program all destinations as favorites, then simply push three commands. Where To? Favorites? Select and Go!
Even in LA it chooses not only the most direct route, but in most cases the best. Occasionally I'll start in a different direction because of construction or traffic and it recalculates immediately.
In a strange town we've used it to find restaurants, hotels, etc and were amazed at the variety offered.
One surprise, when I don't have a signal (as in a parking garage) the GPS Simulator will allow you to navigate a map and check the location of your next stop. Once you get a signal, just switch to active mode and you're off.
I'm pleased with the battery life also. It really runs for five hours as advertised, and seems to take less than an hour to recharge. Our car has a large windshield and a console, so I don't need the window mount. I simply set it against the dashboard in a tray on the console and it works fine. Sometimes we set it on the dash while parked to acquire the satellite.
I bought mine refurbished with no bells and whistles and have gotten my $130 back in saved time and aggravation already. I'm sure my next new car will have built-in nav, but this is portable, I can use it in any vehicle at any time.
I've tried to think of a problem, but, so far, none. Great device.
