GARMIN 010-00718-20 N;VI® 255W WIDESCREEN TRAVEL ASSISTANT Review

GARMIN 010-00718-20 N;VI® 255W WIDESCREEN TRAVEL ASSISTANT
Average Reviews:

The 255W is a replacement for our Garmin nuvi 360, which was stolen from our car. We wanted something basic that fits our budget. It has a few improvements over our old Garmin:
- Wide screen
The main advantage of the wide screen is it's able to accommodate a Qwerty Keyboard. Data entry with the Qwerty keyboard on the 255W is much faster and easier. (On our 360, which doesn't have a wide screen, the data entry is done with a series of keys arranged in alphabetical order - a real pain!)
- Locates Satellites Quickly
The 255W finds satellites very quickly (usually under a minute) and locks on to them. The only time it's lost a signal is when we were in an underground parking garage. Otherwise, we don't have an issue with the device acquiring or locking on to satellite signals.
- Responsive Touch Screen
The touch screen is very responsive. It is more sensitive and accurate than the one on our old 360.
- Fast
The startup time is fast. It's ready to go after I start the car. The map redrawing after the map is dragged is a lot snappier.
The user interface is intuitive and user-friendly. The volume is loud enough, even on the Freeway.
The device has never failed to bring us to our destination. It is sleek and attractive and will fit in your pocket. If you need a basic but reliable GPS, the Garmin 255W is definitely worth consideration.
Other Garmin models you might be interested in looking at:
- Garmin nuvi 265W/265WT
- Garmin nuvi 765/765T
These units are traffic-aware and can route you to avoid congested roads. They come with a built-in traffic receiver and a lifetime subscription to traffic information.
If you decide on the 255W, shop around to get the best price.

I ordered these to put into a second vehicle, and to charge my new GPS from wall outlets. Neither the car charger nor the wall charger would charge the GPS. The GPS reacted to being plugged in as if it were plugged into a USB cable to a computer, or cycled through an attempt to open maps.

Ordered this charger for our second vehicle. It would not work for my Garmin nuvi 255w. Notified Amazon and they had Charger City send me a replacement, which I received very quickly(excellent customer service). However, the replacement didn't work either. The oem charger works fine in both vehicles. I am returning the charger and requesting a refund.

The USB travel charger fails to charge Garmin Nuvi as it's claimed to use for these Garmin models on the site. Plug-in car charger is a low quality device. The Bargaincell vendor has bad and slow customer service support. Buyers should not buy these items. The cost of shipping back and fort is more than the cost you pay for the products. Of course you also waste your time to go to post office to ship them back to return and all other hassle.

Case Logic GPSS-2 Neoprene sport GPS Case (Dark Blue) Review

Case Logic GPSS-2 Neoprene sport GPS Case (Dark Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I couldn't be happier with this case. I was looking for something that had a slim profile but still offered some shock protection. I saw the Incase neoprene sleeve at Target and really liked it. It fit my Nuvi like a glove, and the soft furry lining was nice too. But at $25 plus tax I thought maybe I could find something else I liked for a bit less money. The cheaper sleeves and cases I looked at were either too bulky (I don't need to carry the cord with me), or did not match up to the quality of the Incase. Then I saw the smaller version of this Case Logic and thought it was perfect. For some reason, no one seemed to stock the larger size so I ended up ordering it here.
What I really like about this case is that the neoprene in front is stiffened to protect the screen without adding any bulk. It is a smidgen longer than the Incase, so while I wouldn't say it fits like a glove it is still quite snug, and I actually think it's a better fit in terms of protecting the unit. By the way, Amazon has the dimensions wrong here. Per the Case Logic site: Size is 6" x 4"x 1.25". Interior dimensions are 5.75 x 3.75" x 1.25". If I hadn't checked that out I would not have bought this because 8.4 x 4.3 is way too big.
In all, it's a nice looking case, seems to be well made with a smooth zipper, easy to slip the GPS in and out, and doesn't take up too much room in my purse. (The wrist strap comes off it you don't need it.). I thought the price was really reasonable too (Got mine in blue for $12.59 with free shpg).

Case Logic GPSP-4 Professional GPS Case for 3.5- and 4.3-Inch GPS Navigators
Average Reviews:

This case is perfect for my Garmin 255w! It measures 10"x5½"x2" and is made of a flexible yet rigid material of good quality and classy design. The case holds everything that came with the gps unit--vehicle power cable, USB cable, dashboard disc, suction cup mount (just remove the bracket from the suction cup part) and the manuals. Everything in one place.
Don't expect to carry this case in a purse unless the purse is the size of a diaper bag. Just slide it under your seat and your good to go or use the handy little wrist strap and carry it with you.

Amazon advertised this accessory travel pack for the Garmin Nuvi 205 series (which includes the Nuvi 255). Amazon's information was incorrect. The case does not fit the Nuvi 205 or 255. It leaves about three quarters of an inch of the display screen sticking out and exposed to potential damage. Don't waste your money on this accessory travel pack. Amazon also charged me shipping costs for returning this travel pack, even though the need to return it was because of Amazon's inaccurate description of this product. In the future I plan to verify Amazon's product descriptions through another source. If I am unable to verify Amazon's product description, I won't purchase the product from Amazon. Buyer beware!!

Garmin GTM 25 with Lifetime Traffic Review

Garmin GTM 25 with Lifetime Traffic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found it very difficult to find information on how this works and what it does, so I took a little gamble based on the only review here at Amazon. After using it for a couple of weeks, I have to wonder if the other review is a shill--it would have been nice to know what to expect, not just "it's great" sort of thing.
So I'll try to pass along my view of what this can do and why it is limited (based on my experiences with a Nuvi 205)
You simply use this in place of your DC adapter in your automobile, making it essentially invisible to you (nice--no extra wires to run). As you are driving, it is a receiver of publicly broadcast traffic information for the area you are in (thus the service is free) "when available". When your Garmin detects these broadcasts, it somehow compares the information it gets with your location and planned route. Garmin puts a little traffic icon on you display, indicating how traffic will affect your travel.
The icon is color coded--Green for no problems, yellow for some delay, and red for major delay. I think Garmin takes into account the delays on your route in calculating the arrival time. It does look for alternate routes, and I believe that if it finds a better one, it will automatically reroute you.
If you tap on the traffic icon, it Garmin takes you to another screen with some options: 1. view traffic map 2: see traffic on route and 3: see traffic in area. Since there were no instructions provided with the product I'm not sure exactly how you're supposed to use these, but I'll share how I think they work:
1. view traffic map: This simply changes your navigation map slightly so that the bad traffic areas are highlighted (in yellow or red) as you drive. I don't know why this is done as a separate map--why don't they just color code the navigation map?
2. Traffic on route gives you a zoomed-out map showing where you are and where the traffic issues are
3: Traffic in area shows a list of all the major roads in your area for which there are reports and color codes them. I found this to be the most useful feature.
So that's what it does (maybe it does more, but I haven't figured anything else out yet), but how well does it work?
The simple answer is that the device does what it is supposed to, but it is limited by the information presented to it. I've used it now a few times in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and on a vacation that had me drive up the PA Turnpike, to upstate New York, to Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Toronto, and Watertown, NY. For the most part, the information presented on Garmin was never any better than that which could have been heard on a local radio station.
The coverage did not seem bad--every metro area we were near did have reporting. The only places without reporting were pretty rural.
On the vacation, we encountered 4 separate traffic backups (in areas with reporting), only 2 of which Garmin knew about. The two that it knew about, it estimated our delay as about 1 or 2 minutes, but one was really 15 minutes and one was over an hour. The two delays that Garmin did not know about were significant--one was a half hour, and one was a closed highway that cost us over an hour (and made us miss a ferry we were scheduled for). In the worst cases, had Garmin had the information, I'm sure it would have given us a better route. It's not Garmin's fault, but it does show you the limitations.
So bottom line is that this device works, but it is limited in the information available to it. Is it worth getting? That is up to you--I like having some insight into what is going on around me, even if it didn't change things for me. It's kind of neat seeing the list of different roads and there problems--perhaps this will help more if you are a commuter in a major metro area. If you do get this though, don't expect miracles--you'll have to experiment a little and use it like I do--as a tool that provides some more information to you (albeit not perfect)--and not a say-all, end-all on what you should do.

Garmin FMI 40, Data cable & traffic Review

Garmin FMI 40, Data cable and traffic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a NUVI 205 that didn't have traffic on it. This looked like an economical way of getting traffic information to it. And I was right. At less than $70, it will save you about $30. I was planning on hard-wiring my GPS into my vehicle anyway, so the lack of a plug in was a bonus to me.
There is a lot of wire with this cable. It was engineered for mounting a GPS in a semi-truck, with serial GPS data going to a reporting unit. (It may be NEMA compliant, but I haven't checked.) In a standard car, you could run the wire from one end of the vehicle to the other. There is a single thick feed going from the GPS to the radio receiver. (about a foot.) and another 6 feet from the reciever to the power/splitter. From the splitter there are two leads, both about 6 feet long. One for the power, the other for serial data. The label on the plastic bag containing the cable identified the assignments of the wires. Supply voltage is listed as 6-30 vdc.
It will receive 'Premium' traffic. But nothing need be done to get the basic free 'Lifetime' traffic reports. Check the [...] page to verify that you can get coverage where you want to use it.

According to the writing on the package, this fits Nuvi 250W, 200W, 270, 260, 250, 200.
Works as advertised. It is the original thing made by Garmin. Cost $25.49 w. free shipping from Amazon - which is very reasonable when compared to other online vendors.
In case if you wonder, like I did, the vertical C-shaped bracket that holds on to the GPS unit is also included in the package, although it is missing from the Amazon picture. The included bracket looks like this.

I ordered two of these, one for myself and the other for my father. I also installed both of them an our bikes and they work perfectly.
As far as installation goes, I would recommend using a fuse tap (such as an add-a-circuit) from and auto parts store so that the converter box in the line doesn't drain the battery if you don't ride for a while. You may find, however that your fuse circuit is still hot because you may have relays on your fuse box, in that case, I would recommend installing a switch with the hot wire running into the fuse tap so that all you need to do is flip the switch off and the converter box will not use up your battery.
I don't think the converter box uses up that much power, but if it is directly connected to your battery (or you have the fuse tap in a hot circuit ((by hot circuit, I mean that it is getting power even with the ignition off)) ), the converter box IS using power constantly, so that is why i recommend using a switch or a fuse tap to a switched circuit (meaning a circuit that is not receiving power when the ignition is off).
Make sure you ground everything you install, or it won't work, and make sure every new line has a fuse (why i recommend the fuse tap).
You will have to ground the converter box or the setup will not work. If you use a switch with an LED indicator on it, you will also have to ground the switch if you want the LED to work, but not grounding the switch should not impact the setup's functionality as long as the converter box is grounded (speaking from logic, not experience).
If you have any question for motorcycle install, feel free to ask... I know how difficult it can be to find answers to these questions, but fortunately i found a setup that worked for me and my dad.

Garmin nüvi 265/265T 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic (Factory Refurbished) Review

Average Reviews:

Researched my GPS purchase for 2 weeks and couldn't find a better deal than this one! The 265T has lifetime traffic (the ads are super small so they don't distract), bluetooth that works great with my cell phone, text-to-speech for all streets AND has a voice dial feature I didn't even know about! Received promptly and Garmin support was excellent when I called to get my free map update. You can get 1 free update, but you must provide them with Amazon proof of purchase because it's factory refurbished.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Garmin nüvi 265/265T 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic (Factory Refurbished)

This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.Garmin's nuvi 265T improves upon its 200-series predecessors by adding free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) as well as Bluetooth connectivity to your cell phone. Other significant improvements in the 2x5 series include a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 265T provides complete maps for North America and the handy Text-to-Speech feature, so you get turn-by-turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet").
The nuvi 2x5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.

Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nuvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

Integrated Traffic Receiver Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information--the traffic updates are free for the life of the device.
All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nuvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous--there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

Hands-Free Calling In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nuvi to any Bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nuvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.

Garmin nüvi 200W GPS Automobile Receiver (Refurbished) Review

Garmin nüvi 200W GPS Automobile Receiver (Refurbished)

Disclaimer -- I actually received a TomTom unit as a gift, and after messing with their website to update my maps, the unit locked up and had to be returned. I opted to return it for credit and buy a Garmin. What a difference!
I simply plugged it in, watched it download current maps from the satellite (I think) and started using it. Easy to use, easy to understand.
Before I take a trip I program all destinations as favorites, then simply push three commands. Where To? Favorites? Select and Go!
Even in LA it chooses not only the most direct route, but in most cases the best. Occasionally I'll start in a different direction because of construction or traffic and it recalculates immediately.
In a strange town we've used it to find restaurants, hotels, etc and were amazed at the variety offered.
One surprise, when I don't have a signal (as in a parking garage) the GPS Simulator will allow you to navigate a map and check the location of your next stop. Once you get a signal, just switch to active mode and you're off.
I'm pleased with the battery life also. It really runs for five hours as advertised, and seems to take less than an hour to recharge. Our car has a large windshield and a console, so I don't need the window mount. I simply set it against the dashboard in a tray on the console and it works fine. Sometimes we set it on the dash while parked to acquire the satellite.
I bought mine refurbished with no bells and whistles and have gotten my $130 back in saved time and aggravation already. I'm sure my next new car will have built-in nav, but this is portable, I can use it in any vehicle at any time.
I've tried to think of a problem, but, so far, none. Great device.

Garmin nuvi 750 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Portable Dashboard Mount Included
Great Value for the money! I found the Garmin 750 easy to set up and easy to use. Operating this unit is intuitive, but complete directions are included. I have yet to "play" with all the features, but it works great while using it for my second job. I have to find a lot of locations in the countryside (a lot of back roads) and the unit has been invaluable! You get one free update with the unit that should be done as soon as you get it to make sure the most recent maps are downloaded. One note of caution - you have to download the most recent version of maps on the Garmin website and you have to do this using either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. I found this out when I couldn't download updates using Google Chrome and had to contact Garmin.

Garmin nüvi 1350 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

Garmin nüvi 1350 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)

I like this gps, which was purchased (refurbished) through Amazon. I received this gps about two weeks ago and tested it last week on an 800 plus mile drive from Temecula,CA, to Felton,CA. I was unable to distinguish this gps from a new one, in appearance or in performance. The only reason for 4 stars rather than 5, was I was unable to have the lady "directeur" repeat instructions at will, which I was able to do with my previous Garmin. . The repeatability is not only good company, but important to this WW II veteran with noise damaged hearing. If there is a way to have her recite on request, I would appreciate the information. Thank you.

P.S. Any and all comments are welcome and requested, please. JD

Garmin USB Cable Review

Garmin USB Cable

When I first purchased my Nuvi 255W I tried connecting to my PC using a USB cable I already had that was for another GPS receiver. I was able to charge the Nuvi but I could not get my PC to recognize it and do updates to the unit. After receiving this cable I had no problems at all connecting and updating my Nuvi. Guess it goes to show that not all USB cables are the same.
