Nextar X3-03 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Nextar X3-03 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Nextar x3-03 is probably the best buy out there because it does include an a/c and d/c adapter and a cover along with free map upgrades when available - so they claim. The ac adapter is a benefit for outside sales people (real estate agents) so that you can program all your stops before hand. I recently purchase the tomtom and navignon and found them to be very useless especially the navignon because of the voice directions. It gave me about 5 steps when entering and leaving a ramp from the highway and I felt it would be really confusing if I did not know where I was. In addition to that, the navignon for some reason was trying to reroute me down streets I already knew they were dead ends. I return the tomtom and navignon back to staples and kept my Nextar.
The beauty of the nextar is in its simplicity. The prompts are at the right time without added conversation! It is very easy to select your your next location within seconds while at a traffic light - or rather I should say parked in a safe location. Entering address information was much easier than the others because of the simple predictive text which looks up streets as you are typing them in like Pac for pacific - the navigon would pull up wolfpack once you starting typing and that to me was no useful.
If you need a tool, the nextar is it, if you need a toy and graphics and more of what you don't need and less of what you really need, then I would certainly go back and purchase the tomtom and navigon. The sound and graphics are pretty cool.
The downside, I do not believe there is any quality control and be prepared to send a unit or two back. I originally purchased mine at Kmart which has a very good return policy, problem was, their inventory is light and they have been out of them for 6 weeks. So now I have purchased from Amazon because their exchage policy is just as easy.
Be aware that the battery does not last overnight as I believe the unit is always in standby mode even when you thought it was off.
Nextar is very up front about their problems and issues which you can read about in the support section [...]
I hope this helps anyone trying to make a decision. Best bet is to buy all 4 brands from a place you know they can be returned and try them all out for a day to see which one fits your needs.

Case Logic GPSP-1 Professional GPS Case for 3.5-Inch Flatscreens Review

Case Logic GPSP-1 Professional GPS Case for 3.5-Inch Flatscreens
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This case is sweet - it fits my Nuvi 275T like a glove and is robust enought to protect but also small enough to slip in a large jacket pocket and easily in a carry on bag or purse. The aesthetic is pleasing with a perforated leather strip with brushed metal logo. The case material is very grippy which was a great thing in the frozen climes that I recently visited. The included micro fiber cloth reduced my worries about the GPS screen getting scratched and the elasticized netting divider inside meant that I could also put the traffic data antenna in there. Well Done, Case Logic!

This case is perfect for my Garmin 255w! It measures 10"x5½"x2" and is made of a flexible yet rigid material of good quality and classy design. The case holds everything that came with the gps unit--vehicle power cable, USB cable, dashboard disc, suction cup mount (just remove the bracket from the suction cup part) and the manuals. Everything in one place.
Don't expect to carry this case in a purse unless the purse is the size of a diaper bag. Just slide it under your seat and your good to go or use the handy little wrist strap and carry it with you.

Be aware that this handlebar mount only works with the Nuvi 200 series (which it turns out is stated on the packaging but wasn't in Amazon's description). I tried to get it to hold my Nuvi 360, but there's no way--the clip will not hold the unit if the antenna is open. I'll need to return it to Amazon.

Amazon advertised this accessory travel pack for the Garmin Nuvi 205 series (which includes the Nuvi 255). Amazon's information was incorrect. The case does not fit the Nuvi 205 or 255. It leaves about three quarters of an inch of the display screen sticking out and exposed to potential damage. Don't waste your money on this accessory travel pack. Amazon also charged me shipping costs for returning this travel pack, even though the need to return it was because of Amazon's inaccurate description of this product. In the future I plan to verify Amazon's product descriptions through another source. If I am unable to verify Amazon's product description, I won't purchase the product from Amazon. Buyer beware!!

Garmin 3.5-Inch Carrying Case Review

Garmin 3.5-Inch Carrying Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Garmin leather carrying case is a decent travel compainion and a perfect fit for the Nuvi 370, 360, 350, 310, 300 and also the new 270, 250, and 200.
After purchasing the new Garmin Nuvi 200, and quickly realizing it didn't come with a carrying case, I purchased this product. The quality black leather make this both appealing to the eye and durable however this is a slide-type case, so it is constantly open on one end. A nice feature would have been some type of zipper or velcro closure so the Garmin GPS unit could be fully enveloped within the case. It has a snug fit so I haven't had any problems with it slipping out yet but I do find myself constantly checking to make sure my Nuvi 200 is properly placed inside the case.
I would have preferred a little more padding with it too. The case is made up of thin leather on all sides with very little padding to protect against accidental drops. It would have been nice to have some more cushion for those clusmy moments we've all expercienced.
This case seems to be designed more for protection against scratches and to shield the LCD screen against accidental scrapes.
Still, I give this carrying case three stars because of it's price, duarability, and sleek leather appearance.

According to the writing on the package, this fits Nuvi 250W, 200W, 270, 260, 250, 200.
Works as advertised. It is the original thing made by Garmin. Cost $25.49 w. free shipping from Amazon - which is very reasonable when compared to other online vendors.
In case if you wonder, like I did, the vertical C-shaped bracket that holds on to the GPS unit is also included in the package, although it is missing from the Amazon picture. The included bracket looks like this.

Arkon Garmin nüvi 200 Series GPSGN215 Replacement Cradle and Windshield Mount with Dash Disk (Black)
Average Reviews:

When I first received my new Akron replacement cradle 7/2010 and windshield mount I was extremely satisfied with the initial quality of the bracket itself and the firm mount the suction cup mechanism provided. Without a doubt it was far superior to the original bracket that came with my initial purchase of the Garmin 250. Unfortunately 6 months later it continually falls off the windshield because the mechanism used to affix the pressure to the cup on the window is completely loose with no way to re tighten. To experience these results with only sporadic use is disappointing. I would not recommend purchasing this product.

ARKON GN042 Garmin Nuvi 8.5-Inch Windshield Suction Gooseneck Mount with 17mm Ball Head Review

ARKON GN042 Garmin Nuvi 8.5-Inch Windshield Suction Gooseneck Mount with 17mm Ball Head
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As many here attest, this is the unit that should have been supplied with the Garmin GPS.
I've tried various types of mounts: the vent mount and the beanbag mount. The vent clips had a tenacious attachment to the vent fins. Even the smallest beanbag mount was cumbersome.
This gooseneck unit is small enough to take with me or stuff into the glove compartment when not in use. It comes with the gooseneck mount, a 3" mounting disk, and one alcohol prep pad.
From the photo, I thought this was going to be "flexible" as in the wimpy sort of flexible on my gooseneck desk lamps. When I tried to flex it, it felt practically unbendable. I thought Arkon made a mistake and put a normal straight steel rod inside.
Then I read the directions. You have to use both hands to bend the inner rod in the tube. After you mount this to the windshield, you cannot rebend the gooseneck easily with one hand. And that's a good thing because the rigidity keeps it from bouncing. You can make horizontal adjustments by loosening the nut. The suction cup has plenty of suction at 2-3/4" in diameter, compared to the Garmin's 2-1/4".
Now I can actually reach the GPS screen, and it's at proper eye level. Excellent little device.

Garmin nüvi 250 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Silver)
Average Reviews:

I have used Garmin products before and like the reliability and performance. This unit works very well and in addition a great value price wise. The touch screen works perfectly - no more hassling with non-user friendly buttons. Very easy to navigate the GUI and always seems to find a signal quickly. Routes seem to work well for me (have had it for 2 weeks so not fully tested on routing). Voice prompts are functional and options exist for different languages - I like using the English accent voice. Another great benefit is the size - no external antenna and a small thin unit with a big screen (big enough for me)very well packaged. You could carry it around for hikes or biking as it has that mode and can easily fit into a pocket. All in all I'm very satisfied and use it every day for business because it saves me time and money.

Magellan Maestro 3200 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan Maestro 3200 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a solid entry level GPS from Magellan. After a week of testing the Maestro 3200 with a similar entry level GPS from Garmin--the Nuvi 200, I had a hard time deciding which one to keep. In the end, I went with the Nuvi, not because one is superiorly better than the other, but down to more personal preferences. Here are some positive and negative factors for each device:
Startup and Satellites Acquisition:
In my car, the Maestro takes 40 seconds from startup to acquiring satellites, whereas the Nuvi takes 50 seconds. (Your results may vary depending on where you are.) Furthermore, the Maestro takes less than 5 seconds for the main menu to appear, whereas the Nuvi takes closer to 23 seconds from startup to main menu. So that on the Maestro, user is able to start inputing much sooner. Once satellites are acquired, both devices are able to hold on to the signal exceedingly well, even indoor.
Screens, Menus and Interfaces:
Both devices have a gorgeous 3.5 screen that is very bright and can be viewed from extreme angles. I do find that the Nuvi screen is more pleasing to look at though. Menus and interfaces are very intuitive and user friendly. Most users would not have to read the manual to start using both devices. All the important categories are represented by large icons and easily accessed by touchscreen. In term of layouts, fonts, and color choices, I prefer the Nuvi as the overall design is more inviting. Also, as you navigate between menus and input text, the Maestro would announce your every input such as "Back," "Next," "Cancel," letters and numbers, which I find quite annoying. On the Nuvi, it just "beep" to confirm your entry.
Features:
Instead of comparing all the features for each device, I will just list those that I find important.
Both the Maestro 3200 and Nuvi 200 are preloaded with map of the lower 48 states, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. If you want map for Alaska and Canada, consider the Maestro 3210 and Nuvi 250. However, the Nuvi has the ability to add more maps such as Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia through SD card. As far as I know, the Maestro is not able to add more maps.
I love the usefulness and convenience of the "Points of Interest" database, and thus the more the better. The Nuvi has close to 6 millions compare to 1.3 millions on the Maestro. That means you would be able to find more businesses and attractions wherever you are on the Nuvi without looking up on a computer, phone, or Yellow Pages. For example, the Nuvi lists all the major retailers that do not appear on the Maestro. Both devices allow custom POIs from users to upload.
When searching by POI name, the Maestro is able to bring up the result(s) much faster though. I did a search for a restaurant that is 15 miles from my location and the Maestro took less than 2 seconds to display the result. Whereas, the Nuvi took an excruciatingly 48 seconds to find the result. However, finding businesses that are within a 5 miles radius to a user's location will show up only slightly slower than the Maestro.
The Maestro features a multi-point routing called "Trip Planner" that allows user to input multiple destinations and optimize for the best routes for the entire trip. So, if you do a lot of errands or plan a long trip with multiple destinations, the planner would come in very handy. On the Nuvi, you can only add one additional waypoint at a time while traveling to your final destination. To get around this, Nuvi user can first search all the destinations prior, as the addresses would automatically be put under the "Recently Found" folder or choose to save under "Favorites." Then as you reach each destination, recall the next address under each folder. It's not an elegant solution and your entire trip is not optimize like the Maestro.
The re-route and detour functions are available on both devices. So, if you miss a turn, both GPS will automatically re-calculate and get you back on track. I often find that the new route is generated before reaching the next block. As for detour, the Maestro has a much more robust feature. When using detour, user can specify 3, 5, 10 or custom miles from the main route. On the Nuvi, there is no user specification, just an option to detour.
Both have customizable route methods, such as "Fastest Time" and "Shortest Distance." The Maestro has additional methods of "Least" or "Most Use of Freeways." I find "Most Use of Freeways" to be a valuable option. During the time of day when there's little traffic, I can use this option even when Maestro recommends surface street under "Fastest Time." I prefer travelling on freeways rather than through all the stop lights and signs on surface streets. The Nuvi does not have this option. The Nuvi has an "Off Road" method that I doubt I will ever select. Under a sub-category, user can specify to avoid toll roads on both devices. On the Nuvi, user can further select to avoid u-turns, highways, carpool lanes, unpaved roads, etc.
As for the navigation, routing, and map display screen, this is where I ultimately prefer the Nuvi. The Nuvi renders the 3-D map beautifully with bold outlines, excellent color schemes, sharp fonts, smooth anti-aliasing and shading, and polish appearance. Street name for next turn is clearly displayed on a horizontal bar on top, for example, "Turn Left on Main Street." By clicking the top bar, another screen will appear that display a turn-by-turn preview to your destination. As you approach a turn, the map will slowly zoom in with an arrow prompting a more detailed section of the turn. After the turn, the map will zoom out to the normal display. The whole process is very fluid and instinctive. On the left and right hand corners show "time of arrival" and "distance to the next turn" respectively. There is no option to customize the display such as showing time or distance remain to your destination. There is another screen that you can access for those info. When clicking anywhere on the 3-D navigation map, a detailed 2-D map will appear to give you more information and layout of your current location. Your arrow vehicle can be customize to show a variety of vehicles, from race car to even a tank. More choices can be downloaded on Garmin website. This might seems superfluous to some, but it just adds another level of user experience. After viewing Nuvi's 3-D map, it's difficult to go back to another competitor.
The Maestro's 3-D navigation map is not ugly by any standard, just not as refine comparing to the Nuvi. The Maestro's map display is more cluttered, but with more information available to the driver at a glance. For example, the horizontal bars on top and bottom will display the name of the street that the driver is on and the street for the next turn. There's also an icon to indicate the next turn and compass. User can also customize to display anything from "time of arrival" to "distance remain." On the Nuvi, driver would have to exit the navigation screen for additional info. I also really like that the Maestro will display selected POI icons, such as nearby gas and ATM, on the 3-D map. Furthermore, user can customize what POI categories will display on the map. However, the more categories are selected, the harder it will be to distinguish the icons on a busy street. Like the Nuvi, the Maestro also display a turn-by-turn preview to your destination. However, the Maestro goes a step further by allowing the user to exclude any of the street on the list. So, if you know a street is under maintenance or prefer not to travel on, just exclude that section and the Maestro will re-route when possible.
As for the 3-D rendering, the map outlines are a bit jagged but very detailed with sharp fonts. As you approach a turn, the Maestro will split the screen vertically and show a close-up of the section along with the normal view. Having tested the Maestro and Nuvi for a week, I find both GPS very capable in their routing algorithm. Both devices don't always give you the identical routes to your destination, but I can't really say one is better than the other. However, I observe that the Maestro tends to calculate routes with more turns. On the Nuvi, the voice guidance does indicate whether your arriving destination is on the right or left hand side of the road, which I find helpful. Both GPS have its quirks, such as sometimes calculating longer routes than necessary or the destination off by a block. However, for the most part, the routes on both are very accurate.
Another thing for me to consider when choosing a GPS is the battery life. Both the Maestro and Nuvi can be powered using the included vehicle cable. However, when driving around town, I prefer not to have the unsightly cable dangling from the windshield, especially if you have other devices that use the vehicle power, like an iPod. The Nuvi rechargeable battery is rated up to 5 hours comparing to 3 hours on the Maestro. Both do not come with an A/C charger, but can still be charged using USB to mini-USB on a computer or alternatively charging by car. The speakers on both are pretty loud, but I much prefer the voice on the Nuvi as it sounds more warm comparing to the very robotic pitch of the Maestro. I have yet required customer support, but from what I read from other users and reviewers is that Garmin gives better support to their products. For example, Garmin provides a free WebUpdater software that will automatically update the GPS with the latest software. When I purchased the Nuvi and ran the software, it automatically update my GPS system version from 3.4 to 3.5. That to me instill confidence that Garmin will continue to support their devices.
In summary, the Maestro 3200 and Nuvi 200 are...Read more›

Nextar X3 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Nextar X3 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I got this GPS unit last week, and for an entry price range unit, I was really blown away by the performance and functionality of this unit. This unit only takes about 5 to 10 seconds to acquire satellites and locate my position, and I love the ability to select major road as a route option and the ability to navigate by higher level view or zoom in to local streets.
In the high level view, I really like that every street is named so I really know what's around me, and I can really see where I'm going. When I pull off route into a McDonald, the GPS recalculate my route in seconds when I get back on the road. I haven't tried out the MP3 player or the photo viewer yet, I am sure it work fine but I really don't need this unit for those function anyhow.
I've owned and use other navigation products from the Tom Tom One, to Mio C220, and even the Garmin Nuvi 360, I like this GPS unit the best. This product really exceed my expectation, so I highly recommend this product.

Great GPS and a bonus rear view camera (color)... GPS function is easy to program and works great. Rearview camera needs to be adjusted to view as close to the rear bumper as possible... Had to make a special bracket to accomplish this.... now in my van I see 1 feet behind the rear bumper... I would recgomend this GPS and rearview camera to any one that has a VAN... Will be buying a second camera for use on my car....
