We purchased the Magellan 980823 Windshield Mount and find we have to use a credit card to lift it away from the windshield!! It really sticks! The one thing we found is we have to carry a screw driver around to tighten the ball joint, otherwise it starts to get limpy and fall on the dash. Once we figured that out, we became very happy travelers!!

(More customer reviews)I bought this holder because the holders that came with my Delphi Skyfi 2 were as cheap as you could get.
I've been very surprised by this. The suction cup is very strong. I've never had any problems with it coming loose, nor can I easily remove it without releasing the air lock. The flexible metal bar is very sturdy, so it stays in whatever position you put it in. It comes with a couple options to hook it up to the radio. Either a plastic plate that you can screw onto the back of your radio or a "hook" that slides into the hole that most XM/Sirius radios have on the back.

I got this mount for my TOMTOM XL because the TOMTOM mount is a piece of crap that kept falling from my dash. I'm now aware that when I buy any type of device that requires mounting, I'll have to spend an additional $20-30 or more for a Ram Mount to make sure I won't have any mounting or staying mounted problems.
I highly recommend this mount.

(More customer reviews)The first mount was lost by my brother. The second broke easily. This on is perfect. It's strong. The suction device makes it easy to put on or take off. I didn't see that in the description or picture. The device can hold your GPS in different angles. Also they gave me a mounting plate as well. Haven't use it, but good idea.
By the way, I had the old school Tom Tom One, Not the Tom Tom One XL.

(More customer reviews)I bought the Garmin Nuvi 350 in March '07. I'm an occasional GPS user and not a road warrior. The Garmin mount was sub-standard in every way compared to the Arkon model. The Garmin mount would constantly lose suction and fall from the windshield (I had to loop the power cord around the rearview mirror so that when it did fall it would be dangling and not crash on the dashboard/floor).
I have not used the adhesive disk from either Garmin or Arkon for dash mounting.

(More customer reviews)I just got this product and I wasn't satisfied. The product claims that the mount can rotate 360 degrees; however, that's only true for the windshield mount. The vent mount is fixed and doesn't rotate or even tilt.
Although not very stable, the windshield mount is acceptable. The vent mount, on the other hand, isn't that great: it was not easy to install and I had the impression that I was going to break the mount pins as I was pushing it into the vent. My vents in my car are located near the top of the dash, so they are angled and do not face me (as the driver) perfectly; since the vent mount has no rotational capabilities, my phone's orientation isn't convenient and is hard to see while driving. Also, it was quite hard to insert and remove my iphone from the mount as it doesn't fit easily, probably because of the protective case on my iphone. The difficulty in inserting/removing the phone makes it not practical, since the pressure can easily damage my vent if not inserted/removed with care.
Overall, I believe only the windshield mount is usable; otherwise, if you're looking to use the vent mount, then I wouldn't recommend this product unless your vent's orientation in your car faces you perfectly. If you have a protective case on your phone, then I wouldn't recommend this product, since it doesn't fit easily.

ARKON GN042 Garmin Nuvi 8.5-Inch Windshield Suction Gooseneck Mount with 17mm Ball Head Review

(More customer reviews)As many here attest, this is the unit that should have been supplied with the Garmin GPS.
I've tried various types of mounts: the vent mount and the beanbag mount. The vent clips had a tenacious attachment to the vent fins. Even the smallest beanbag mount was cumbersome.
This gooseneck unit is small enough to take with me or stuff into the glove compartment when not in use. It comes with the gooseneck mount, a 3" mounting disk, and one alcohol prep pad.
From the photo, I thought this was going to be "flexible" as in the wimpy sort of flexible on my gooseneck desk lamps. When I tried to flex it, it felt practically unbendable. I thought Arkon made a mistake and put a normal straight steel rod inside.
Then I read the directions. You have to use both hands to bend the inner rod in the tube. After you mount this to the windshield, you cannot rebend the gooseneck easily with one hand. And that's a good thing because the rigidity keeps it from bouncing. You can make horizontal adjustments by loosening the nut. The suction cup has plenty of suction at 2-3/4" in diameter, compared to the Garmin's 2-1/4".
Now I can actually reach the GPS screen, and it's at proper eye level. Excellent little device.

I put it up 2 days ago - was driving today - went around a corner and my Garmin flew across the dashboard, hit the window then into the floorboard. I thought it lost suction, but it was the actual unit itself. The rubber piece that attaches to the window broke away from the part that attaches to the GPS. Obvious poor construction - can't be fixed :(
