Sirius SPR1 Sportster Satellite Radio Receiver Review

Sirius SPR1 Sportster Satellite Radio Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned a Sportster for about 3 months now. I am happy with the unit and its features, and even happier with Sirius programming.
This unit is smaller than past portable units and features the latest chipset that offers many new features. You also have the ability to switch the unit between green and amber illumination (you can even mix the two). And an RF modulator is built into the Sportster so that you can easily listen to it on car or other FM radios.
The unit offers the ability to select your favorite NFL team and be reminded whenever your team is playing a game--thus the name "Sportster"(all NFL games are broadcast on Sirius). This unit was a great choice even though I don't like listening to sports games.
This unit offers 30 presets spread over three "bands." Having this many presets is important when you have a service offering 65 completely commercial-free music channels and over 50 talk, news, sports and entertainment channels.
You can also use the 10 preset buttons to directly enter a channel number if you first press the jog/dial button. Navigating channels is further simplified by a "Category" button that allows you to scroll through the different categories of programming (Pop, Rock, Country, News, Talk/Entertainment, etc.).
It also features a new "jump" button. With this button you can jump back and forth from whatever channel you are listening to to the traffic and weather channel for your area. Sirius currently offers 10 channels of continually-updated traffic and weather that cover 20 of the largest metropolitan areas. When I press the jump button for San Diego traffic, this unit automatically waits to switch me to the S.D./L.A. traffic channel until it begins San Diego information (the channel switches between San Diego and L.A. information every 4 minutes). If your city is not covered, you can assign another channel (like CNN) to the jump button.
If you are listening to your favorite song, or a program you really enjoy (like "Car Talk" on the NPR channels), you can just press the "Memo" button and if your Sportster is on, a beep and on-screen message will tell you whenever your song or program is playing. You can store 20 songs and/or programs this way.
There are some technical issues with the Sportster. I've spoken to several tech reps, and it seems some of these problems were due to the early car cradles for this unit (car cradles allow installation of the Sportster in your car and feature a "line out" jack for direct connection with head units offering auxillary inputs). I had to swap mine out a few times to get one that would work.
One problem that hasn't been solved seems to be common to all Sirius receivers using the new chipset. Sometimes the unit will play at a slower speed (like a 45 record played at 33 speed) when you turn it on. This is always resolved by turning the unit off and on again, and it happens very infrequently.
I chose to buy a 4-year, over-the-counter-swap service agreement with my Sportster, and I highly recommend a service contract to anybody who buys a Sportster (or any other portable satellite receiver).
I do experience signal loss while driving around town. I lose the satellite signal (which is line-of-sight) about every sixth time I drive under a bridge or overpass. The addition of more ground repeaters, which amplify the signal on the ground, will solve this problem over time.
Sirius is currently only officially available in the continental U.S. due to licensing issues. But I have driven over 1,000 miles south from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas (at the tip of the Baja Peninsuala in Mexico) with excellent reception throughout both trips.
A home kit, boombox and additional car kits are available so that you can listen to your Sportster virtually anywhere. Of course, with either you will need an unobstructed location for the antenna. The most difficult part of setting up your Sportster is running the antenna cable to the unit. Though the cable is very small, you do have to find a path for it, and this can be particularly difficult in a car where the antenna must be outside and the radio inside (some people do locate the antenna on the dash, but results seem mixed--external mounting is much preferred). The car antenna included with the Sportster car kit is magnetic (the magnet is very strong).
Sirius satellite radio is as valuable as cable TV. Once you have it, you won't want to do without it. And this Sportster unit allows you to take full advantage of the vast programming Sirius offers. I would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the ongoing (infrequent) technical issue. But with the service contract, I know I'll always be able to switch to any redesigned unit.

Get in the game and join the future with the plug-and-play Sirius SPR1 Sportster satellite radio receiver. In addition to all of the capabilities Sirius receivers are known for, the Sportster maximizes the listening experience of Sirius' broad sports lineup. Just like other Sirius-compatible receivers, the SPR1 decodes the incoming Sirius digital-quality radio program information from more than 120 music, news, and sports channels and delivers an audio signal to your radio or other audio output equipment. It's easily transportable and, with the use of Sportster kits, enables you to listen to satellite radio programs at home, in your car, or during the backyard barbeque.
An easy-to-read, 6-line display tells you the channel name and number, category, artist name, song title, and time simultaneously. To suit your environment, you can control the contrast, dimming, and color (amber or green) of the display. Program up to 30 presets of your favorite streams, as well as search by stream, artist name, song title, or category. With the touch of a button you can switch between the traffic and weather reports for your city and any of the other music, news, or entertainment channels. Enter up to 20 of your favorite songs, and the receiver will alert you when they are playing on any of the music channels. Listing and search options let you search by channel name, artist name, song title, category, and presets to find your favorite programming. Time functions include an onscreen clock, alarm, and sleep timer, as well as a program alert that allows the unit to switch to a preprogrammed stream at a selected time. A full-function remote control lets you select channels, browse categories, or change display settings quickly and easily.
The Sportster earns its name because it has enhanced features specifically designed for sports lovers. The Game Alert feature prompts you when your favorite NFL or other sports teams are playing on Sirius. The Game Zone lists all of the play-by-play games and scores on Sirius by league (MLB, NFL, NHL, etc.). And what sports fan could do without the Sportster's personalized team logo startup and shutdown screen?
The Sportster has a built-in FM transmitter that allows the music received by the unit to be transmitted to a nearby FM tuner. Simply set the frequency from which you would like the Sportster to transmit and tune to that station frequency on your conventional radio. Now you've got satellite radio playing anywhere! Note that the Sportster must be used with one of the following adapter kits:

Sirius SPB1 Sportster boombox
Sirius SPC1 Sporster car kit
Sirius SPH1 Sportster home kit

Sirius satellite radio is a subscription service that provides more than 120 channels of programming, from digital-quality music to news, talk, and sports. It is available only in the lower 48 states--not in Alaska, Hawaii, or U.S. territories.

SIRIUS Stratus 6 Dock-and-Play Radio with Car Kit (Black) Review

SIRIUS Stratus 6 Dock-and-Play Radio with Car Kit (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this to replace an Audiovox PNP2 radio purchased in 2004...after wasting tons of time and effort trying to make it continue to work properly. I had purchased three home docks and one auto dock for the PNP2 so I was not thrilled when it started to fail. I could not get consistient reception with the PNP2 even after placing the antennae in various places outside my home. I even bought an antenna extender so I could place the antenna on the roof, free from obstruction...no dice. I listen to Sirius all day long so reception problems were driving me nuts!
I ordered the Stratus 6 (with car kit) and a home kit from Amazon because they had the lowest pricing and free shipping. I only ordered one home kit to be sure everything worked properly. After spending a short time connecting everything to a receiver on the first floor I was ready to take the antenna outside for a test when, to my surprise, I heard music! The new antenna was pulling a signal from inside the house! I was completely floored and soon realized that the technology has been enhanced quite a bit since the days of the PNP2. I now keep the unit on top of an organ next to the receiver and keep the antenna curled up, pointing at a wall, and I get all three reception bars! Moving to another stereo in another part of the house is so simple that I don't even need to purchase additional docks. I wish I hadn't waited so long.
The car kit is just as great...I plugged the supplied 3.5mm to 3.5mm connector to my AUX IN, ran the antenna through to the trunk, and found a convenient spot on the dash for the dock. WAY better reception than the crappy PNP2 car dock!
I was able ot transfer my lifetime subscription to the new unit in about five minutes ($75 fee for that but worth it to call all the way to India for assistance ;-)
The blue display is so easy to read and the 10 pre-sets are adequate to get me around the dial quickly. Sound is stellar! I highly recommend this unit!

I bought this holder because the holders that came with my Delphi Skyfi 2 were as cheap as you could get.
I've been very surprised by this. The suction cup is very strong. I've never had any problems with it coming loose, nor can I easily remove it without releasing the air lock. The flexible metal bar is very sturdy, so it stays in whatever position you put it in. It comes with a couple options to hook it up to the radio. Either a plastic plate that you can screw onto the back of your radio or a "hook" that slides into the hole that most XM/Sirius radios have on the back.

ARKON SR097 SatRadio Lighter Socket Mount with Power Dongle (CM097 + AP012) Review

ARKON SR097 SatRadio Lighter Socket Mount with Power Dongle (CM097 + AP012)
Average Reviews:

I couldn't stand having my Sirius suction-cupped to my windshield. This product fits the bill for what I was looking for, though not perfectly.
It's secure and keeps the radio down near my console, but as the other reviewer commented, it's a bit bulky in how they made a separate connector. It would have been ideal to make this a splitter so you can plug in your radio AND have an extra socket, but I'll take it the way it is. It's flexible enough to keep the radio out of the way.
One thing to note. I have a Sirius Starmate, and this mount didn't quit fit perfectly. I had to do a little work on it, drilling a hole and re-assembling it to get it perfect.

I ordered this item from Amazon. Once I had it professionally installed I was informed that it was a faulty radio because my Drivers side tweeter wouldn't work with it but would with other tested radios. I informed Amazon and they overnighted another radio to me and once it was installed I was very impressed. Looks great in a car with a double din. Plays DVD flawlessly! Touch screen is very responsive and many options etc!! My speakers are much louder and more clear now with this unit. Would recommend buying from Amazon before going to your audio shop where they would charge you much more!

The unit is great except when you plug in Ipod you can not view a playlist or menu of the Ipod. The price is another thing, it is a little pricey. If the price is set under $700.00, I believe a lot of people will buy it-but don't get me wrong, I love it!! You have access to USB/AV in the front panel unlike many Multi/Nav system, you have to access the USB/AV at the rear of the unit. Touchscreen(LCD)of the system, responds well with the touch. Sony XNV-660BT 6.1-Inch WVGA In-Dash A/V Receiver with Bluetooth, USB, Satellite/HD radio ready, and Integrated Navigation from TomTom Review

Sony XNV-660BT 6.1-Inch WVGA In-Dash A/V Receiver with Bluetooth, USB, Satellite/HD radio ready, and Integrated Navigation from TomTom
Average Reviews:

Pros: Start-up is under 5 seconds, Nav, DVD player, IPOD integration is great for the most part, Blue tooth, radio tuner has many presets and even has ability to search regular FM for genre specific stations (great for traveling). Buttons are large and it feels very user friendly and there aren't a lot of layers to get through when trying to switch through your sources.
Cons: Sirius Satellite radio integration is not good! It only displays 1 line and 8 characters and scrolls. In order to get all the information typically provided by satellite radio you need to hit the Display button 4 times (while waiting for scrolling time) to get the radio station name, song name, artist, and channel number. This is just not acceptable at this price level. Sony's website states "seamless" satellite radio integration, I don't quite understand that.
Second con is with the IPOD, but when your listening to a song and you want to go back through the layers to the album then artist etc, it doesn't let you. It will make you start at the beginning of your library and have to dive back into the artist then album to get back to where an ipod would normally go with one click. Kind of difficult when you just want to change albums by the same artist or even when you want to skip from track 2 to 10 without pressing seek 8 times.
Last con I care to discuss, SENSE ME software is only written for windows, and I don't have a windows computer, leaving this function of the radio completely useless for me.
This radio is going back this week, as I have called Sony and they have no answers for any updates in the future. Check my video review out as it was too big for amazons site:

Since the 1st reviewer really captured a lot of my feelings on this unit, I'll try to concentrate on or add some additional thoughts...
When researching the higher end offerings from Kenwood and Pioneer, I finally decided on Clarion's NX500 after I saw all of the features that were included for a price tag that was *at least* half the cost of anything comparable. For reference, I picked mine up for $579 from another online retailer.
Installation was a breeze in my Mercedes Benz ML320 using a Metra harness. I was especially pleased with the modular wiring setup in the back of the headunit. As the other reviewer mentioned, you only plug in the connections you plan to use. This all means less clutter and mess behind the dash. At the time of installation, I also installed the Sirius Direct Connect adapter and a rear view camera. Connections were very straightforward.
The navi system seems to be a hybrid between a Garmin and Honda/Acura unit. You have the ability to view the mapping aerially, or slightly angled (quasi 1st person). The system is adequate for getting you to your destination, although I would've liked to have seen an option that lists turn-by-turn directions on the right side of the split screen for better clarification similar to the software found in my Acura TSX. Guidance voice options include 2 sets of male and female voices. One set utilizes text to speech (TTS) and phonetically pronounces street names and highways. These voices are robotic sounding, and will literally pronounce names as they are spelled. For example, U.S. Highway 9 would sound like "us nine" vs "u-s nine". The other set of more human sounding voices merely give generic turn by turn directions such as "Turn left at next intersection" vs "Turn left at Broadway". A neat feature of the split screen option is that the time and distance to the next turn/checkpoint is displayed on the left side while the total remaining distance and estimated time of arrival are displayed on the right side. I did not have any issues w/ the unit keeping extremely accurate time as the other reviewer. I believe setting the time to sync via the GPS will solve his problem. The POI database in the nav software was fairly extensive and very helpful when in an unfamiliar area looking for a place to eat, a place to get gas, etc. Entering addresses to get routing guidance was fairly easy; however, destinations on main streets sometimes became sources of frustration. When trying to enter an address on Rt 46, I finally realized that the road was also known as "Main St". Having a HD based system allows quick re-routing when you deviate from the directions. While my Acura TSX and MDX would take a few seconds to "recalculate" a new route, the NX500 does it almost instantaneously. Nav reception via the GPS antenna is very strong. I mounted mine under the dash, and have had no issues whatsoever with getting located as soon as I turn on the vehicle. The reception is so strong that viewing the speedometer screen yielded identical results to the actual speedometer in my instrument cluster.
Sound quality was very good considering I am not running an aftermarket amp. If you're an audiophile, the limited EQ adjustments will feel limiting. For the average person, there are "preset" EQ settings for various types of audio such as "Rock", "Urban", or "Techno".
Sirius radio reception sounded CD clear in my vehicle. I did not get any hissing or "white" noise on any channel like the other reviewer did, nor has my sat radio ever locked up.
I also purchased a bypass module on e bay. Unlike Pioneers and other aftermarket headunits, you cannot simply ground the parking brake wire to the chassis. It requires a pulsing signal to mimick the release and re-engagement of the parking brake in order to operate any stereo function that includes video. I do not condone, nor recommend watching any video while operating the vehicle. For my purposes, I wanted the ability to adjust my nav destination w/o pulling the car over.
Ipod integration is ok --- all pertinent menus/data are available such as playlists, artists, songs, albums, etc. Unfortunately, however, you do not have the ability to quickly scroll through entries. I have over 5,000 songs on my 5G 30GB Video. Trying to select an artist beginning with a 'G' requires the continuous pressing of the down arrow. You cannot hold the button to accelerate the process.
The DVD function works well. The picture is very good, although it seems a tad washed out. Of course, this is a minor point as I rarely watch movies in the vehicle. Playing a CD is standard fare, but I was VERY disappointed in what appears to be a poor oversight in basic design. I used to be a vinyl DJ, and have a large collection of "continuous" mix CDs that I have not yet been able to transfer to my iPod. When playing a mix, the player will insert a 2-3 second gap between tracks, regardless if the CD was recorded without them. This can get rather annoying during a DJ set or live band performance.
The built-in bluetooth system makes this unit such a big upgrade over its predecessor because an additional, external modular add-on is not required (less mess behind the dash). Calls come in loud and clear through the vehicle's speakers, and a mic is built directly into the face of the stereo. I also installed the supplementary external mic in the vehicle to give me the option of choosing which mic to use, but callers on the other end have not reported any problem hearing me clearly when using the built-in mic. Music/video will pause and mute when a call is placed or received. My Verizon Blackberry Storm can synch its address book and call log w/o an issue. You can switch off to your handset in a snap with a dedicated button on the bluetooth screen interface. The other GREAT feature of the built-in bluetooth system is the ability to listen to Bluetooth audio. I frequently run Pandora and Slacker in the vehicle now from my Blackberry. I have so many "entertainment" options now, it truly is ridiculous. One gripe about this feature is that you can't view the nav screen at the same time.
As the other reviewer touched on, the biggest problem with this unit has to do with its visibility in bright sunlight. Because the screen is very smooth and gloss like, it reflects a great deal of glare during the day. I will try to remedy this with an anti-glare film and update at a later time. With all that said, after a month and a half of solid use, I would purchase this unit again in a heartbeat. I almost feel like I stole it, and cannot say enough about what a great value it really is. While it is not a supreme standout in any one area, it does everything fairly well. If you are looking for a good "quiver killer", I would highly recommend it.
Pros (to echo some of the 1st reviewer's sentiments):
1 - Ease of installation w/ no mess.
2 - Fast navigation due to HD based software; STRONG GPS reception.
3 - Clean sound, even w/o an amp.
4 - Easy addition of additional AV sources.
5 - POI database is robust.
6 - Built in bluetooth, especially the ability to stream BT audio (Pandora and Slacker in the car!!!)
7 - Tangible, physical buttons for volume control and source selectionCons (more nitpicking than anything else):
1 - Excessive glare in bright sunlight... hopefully this will be remedied w/ a simple anti-glare film.
2 - Can't use voicedial feature for making calls.
3 - Entering addresses could be a little cumbersome if you don't know the alternative names.
4 - No quick scroll feature for navigating through the iPod.
5 - Mix CDs don't play continuously.
6 - Can't view the nav screen when playing BT audio.
I hope this helps others who are trying to decide on a new DD unit for their vehicle. Thanks to the 1st reviewer for helping me make my own decision.

I purchased this unit for my vehicle, and couldn't be happier! Very solid unit, lots of options, fairly straightforward install. My only complaint is the minimal installation instructions, presumably because Clarion prefers that their stereos be professionally installed, however, I didn't really have any problems installing it.
UPDATE: DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE LIMIT OF THE NUMBER OF SONGS ON A USB DRIVE! Manual says 1500 max...I have 2350 on an 8GB drive, and it is rocking just fine...
