Clarion VZ300 3.5" In-Dash DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver Review

Clarion VZ300 3.5 In-Dash DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver
Average Reviews:

The two main features I use in the car work great: the radio and the AUX in line (for streaming Pandora from my phone). I haven't had a chance to try out the USB input yet, but I did try the DVD functionality and it works great too, although it does require the use of the remote for navigation. Here are my thoughts so far:
PROS
* Great sound
* Easy changing of audio settings
* Nice large display for displaying radio settings while playing the radio
* DIM function cycles through three settings great for day, night, and off
* Installation instructions were easy enough for me to follow
* Detailed instruction on how to connect hand brake wire (although the kit doesn't appear to include the right sensor)
* Lots of audio options: AUX in and DVD worked without any problems
* UPDATE: USB music plays fast with little delay
* UPDATE: USB music picks up right where it left off when you turn power on
CONS
* Lots of wires which make for a difficult installation into a standard stereo space
* DVD control requires use of the remote
* Display does nothing when in AUX mode (a screensaver or something would have been nice, not sure if that's legal though)
* UPDATE: Turning on power button in the dark is a guess game
* UPDATE: Navigation of USB music using remote is not intuitive (i.e. I have to read the manual)
* UPDATE: Received a USB Bad after leaving stereo off overnight
The installation for me went pretty smoothly. As mentioned above, the plethera of wires made sliding the stereo into place a pain. In order to get it to work, I had to pull out the DIN below the stereo and guide the wires down into the space below. Overall, I thought the installation instructions were good. They had the three most important items which are a step to remind you to disconnect the negative from the car battery, a diagram of the overall way the stereo is installed into a dash, and a wiring diagram. With those three I was able to do a standard installation (i.e. four speakers and the radio antenna) without any issues. By the way, this stereo was the first stereo I've ever installed.
By the way, another reviewer mentioned the audio would stop when they went into the settings. That may be true for USB audio or CD/DVD playback, but for radio and AUX in, the audio kept playing no matter what I did unless I hit the power button to mute.
UPDATE: USB functionality works great. You plug in a drive and it starts at the first song it finds. When you turn the power off and back on, it picks right up at the last part of the song you were listening to when powering off the stereo. I did receive a USB Bad error when turning the car on this morning, unplugging and replugging the USB in fixed the issue and it picked up at the last song it was playing. I haven't figured out all the details on navigating through the songs just yet, but with the remote it looks like you can search via artist, album, song title, etc. As the driver though, I'm expecting I won't be able to do much better than using the forward and reverse buttons (and the preview seek button) to navigate the music. Because of that, I grabbed some old 512 MB and 1 GB drives which I'm putting together different "mixes" that I can update at will and plug in as my mood changes.

Clarion CZ209 CD/MP3/WMA Receiver with iPod Control and USB Port Review

Clarion CZ209 CD/MP3/WMA Receiver with iPod Control and USB Port
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This stereo has made a wonderful replacment/upgrade to the factory CD player in my 2003 Subaru Outback wagon. It was very easy to install, thanks to the friendly staff at Crutchfield who can provide you with a wiring harness.
The standard AM/FM radio isa available, but I honestly never use it these days. The ability to play MP3 CDs is excellent, and I keep one in the stereo with some of our favorites, for days we forget to bring the thumb drive.
The AUX port is a great feature too, for those who have non-iPod MP3 players. iPods can be hooked up directly thru the USB.
It's the USB that makes this unit awesome. The port is on the back of the stereo in the form of a ~18" permanently attached USB cable, with a Type A Female connection on the end (perfect for pluggin in things like Thumb Drives).
We routed our USB cable to a compartment below the stereo that has a flip open door. Simply open the door, puul out the cable, lug in the thumb drive, stuff it back in the compartment, close the door and enjoy.
This stereo will take a few seconds (5-10) to read your MP3 CD / USB drive. Once it does, you are set to go. If you unplug the USB drive, and don't plug any different USB drives in, the next time you plug in that thumb drive, it will pick up playpack right were it left off. Nice feature.
We couldn't play music on our Sansa MP3 Player from the USB connection, but it may be something we are doing wrong. At any rate, thumb drives are cheap and smaller, and multi-purpose.
The stereo will play WMA, MP3, WAV, and possibly others? Those are the three formats I've tossed at it so far.
The display is okay. Easy read, but because it has to scroll the titles and other information across, it feels like you have to keep glancing down to read it as you drive.
Asides from an amazing price and all of the features I needed, this stereo appealed over the slightly more expenisive models in one major area: There are buttons on the head unit to navigate and otherwise manipulate the stereo. Sure it comes with a remote, and sure you lose potential screen space when you start cramming on buttons... BUT, as the person driving the car and using the stereo, you'll want the ability to quickly and easily execute each operation. The idea of a joystick style master knob appeals to my inner-geek, but it'd be too frustrating to operate.
Speaking of operating, this stereo is a breeze. I've yet to look in the manual.
So far I have only one gripe. Last night while driving home, the wife was trying to find a song. The process was: skip to next track. See the 2 second display of the track number, then see the title begin to scroll. About that time you're in about 3 - 5 seconds and are starting to realize what the song is, and that it's not the one you want. It'd be nice to be able to "browse" the songs and then select one for playing, instead of surfing through them. Maybe if I read the manual I'll find that feature?
All-in-all, this is an amazing unit. I wish I had bought into one of these a couple years ago (although the prices are great now).

Clarion CZ509 CD/MP3/WMA/AAC/iPod Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth Receiver and USB Port Review

Clarion CZ509 CD/MP3/WMA/AAC/iPod Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth Receiver and USB Port
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently got a used car and the radio was trashed so I had to replace it. (Approx cost $159 for decent unit)
I HATE the whole blue tooth headset thing because I always forget it or forget to charge it but I needed a new headset. (Approx Cost $60 for moderate unit or $129 for Jawbone)
I also wanted to be able to control my iPod from my stereo.
(Approx cost for iPod stereo module is $75)
The Clarion CZ509 seemed to be the logical choice as it would cost over $290 separately to accomplish what I wanted plus I would not have to worry about remembering to bring or charge that stupid headset!
Installation of the CZ509 cost me $40 plus another $50 for the dash kit, wire harness and antenna adapter bringing my total up to $269.
The blue tooth is GREAT, sound is good and the INCLUDED External Mic really makes it work better than those stereos that have it on the faceplate.
iPod control is good and it charges your iPod while it is connected so you NEVER have to worry about it having a dead battery.
Now the bad.
The manual is obviously translated from another language to English as some things don't have the correct usage or tense.
Some of the features are difficult program like syncing your phonebook with the CZ509 and you almost need a 2nd pair of hands to accomplish these tasks.
For some reason, the AM band does not work well which really sucks if you are trying to listen to traffic radio.
I am pleased with the CZ509 and would recommend.

With Built-in Bluetooth, MP3/WMA/AAC support, direct iPod control, a front USB input, and a wealth of sound-shaping features, Clarion's CZ509 CD receiver is a powerful system to begin with. But with support for SAT radio, OEM steering wheel remotes, and three sets of preamp outputs, it's a perfect bed for expansion.

Detachable Control Panel The CZ509 features an anti-theft, flip-down detachable faceplate featuring a 13 x 10 two-line, high-visibility LCD. Blue key illumination and a massive rotary volume make control in the dark a snap.
Built-in Bluetooth For wireless connection with mobile phones, PDAs and MP3 Players. Supports Bluetooth profiles A2DP/AVRCP for audio streaming and HFP/OPP for hands-free operation, so you can easily communicate and transfer digital music to your vehicle's audio system. A wired microphone is also supplied.
Rear USB for Direct iPod Control Just connect the USB cable that's included with your iPod to the CZ509's rear USB input and you get complete control of your iPod including genre/album/song title browsing, complete with iPod ABC Search convenience. The functions of iPod's control wheel are emulated on the source unit's control dial, so virtually the same operations are possible from both the iPod or the source unit. The tunes you love to carry can be enjoyed seamlessly in your car.
CDs and Beyond This receiver will play your CDs and CD-R/RWs, but burn a data CD with your favorite MP3/WMA or iTunes AAC files and the fun begins, with hours of music on a single disc. You can also play the files back from an inserted USB thumb drive. The device will display ID3-TAG info like artist or song name for your added convenience.
AM/FM Radio Sometimes you just want to listen to the radio. Store your favorite radio stations on the 18 FM and six AM presets.
BBE MP for Better Sounding MP3/WMA/AAC Files BBE MP (Minimized Polynomial Non-Linear Saturation) Process improves digitally compressed sound such as MP3/WMA/AAC by restoring the harmonics that are lost through compression, thereby reproducing the warmth, details and nuances that you would otherwise miss. BBE MP enhanced harmonics even serve to make regular CDs sound better.
Beat EQ for User Customizable Sound In addition to providing 3 preset equalization patterns--BASS BOOST, IMPACT, and EXCITE--Clarion's BeatEQ even lets you freely customize the level and range of the bass, midrange and treble portions of each pattern. You can tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience. (A2DP/ AVRCP compliant).
Built-in High Pass/Low Pass Crossovers Crossover settings of 50Hz, 80Hz and 120Hz are available, letting you optimize the signal for high or low frequency reproduction when a subwoofer or tweeters are part of the system.
Front AUX Input With an AUX input on the front panel, it's easy to plug-in a portable audio device, portable satellite radio, or other external audio gadgets for instantaneous enjoyment.
SAT Radio Ready Clarion gives you the choice of XM Satellite Radio or Sirius Satellite Radio. Choose either system and you can connect a Satellite Radio receiver with Translator connected via Ce-NET. Enjoy over 150 channels of music, news, talk shows, sports and traffic information with CD quality sound.
Ready to Expand The CZ509 gives you a 50W x 4 built-in amplifier to begin with, but if you'd like to add additional power to your system, three RCA preamp outs are provided.
It's also ready for an OEM steering wheel remote. Grow your system at your own pace.
Remote Control Included Control the action with the included wireless remote.

Clarion VZ309 3.5-Inch Single-DIN Multimedia Station with USB Port Review

Clarion VZ309 3.5-Inch Single-DIN Multimedia Station with USB Port
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To put it politely, I have been disappointed by the performance and feature set of this receiver. In fact, I thought it was so bad that this couldn't have been a product developed by Clarion. I think this is a re-badged Clarion which was designed/engineered by a low-tier manufacturer. The fact that the HD Tuner that works with this receiver doesn't work with any other seems to point in that direction too. But this is a review, so I will be specific about it.
Usually, people write the positives and negatives when writing a review. I will do the same. So, here's what I like about it:
1. Looks: It is a handsome looking deck. I am not a fan of the flashing LEDs and rotating colors. This has very minimalistic and simplistic, OEM type design that complements the rest of the dash.
2. Build quality is great. Definitely does not look like a made in China item that you can buy at an auto parts store.
3. Nice, large screen - crisp and clear.
4. Sounds is good, although nothing earth-shattering for a 200W amp.
5. HD Tuner works well, get stations fast and clear.
Now, before I list the things I don't like about it, let me explain something. A lot of people will mention a LACK OF FEATURE as a negative. I kind of find it unfair. I mean, before you buy something, you should know what features it has or doesn't have. For example, this receiver doesn't have Bluetooth. Now, it will be unfair for me to say this is a bad receiver because of that.
On the other hand, things that are wrong with it, or designs that are inconvenient can be fairly mentioned in the list of CONS. So, I will start with it:
1. If you start your car before you attach the faceplate, the receiver will remain turned off. You have to press the power button to turn in on - every time. With most receivers, if you turned off your receiver before you remove your car keys, it will remain off until you turn in on manually. Same way, if you left your receiver turned ON, and turned the car off (remove keys), it will come on automatically next time you turn on ignition and put the faceplate. This doesn't do that. Very inconvenient.
2. The "power"/ON button is not lit when the unit is off. So, coupled with the issue #1, it is a major inconvenience at night. You come in, start the car, put the faceplate back on - and nothing. Now you will have to blindly look for the power button to turn it on.
3. If there is a CD/DVD in the drive, it will always start in the CD/DVD source, regardless of last source you were listening to when it was turned off.
4. USB slot is also not lit, so, inserting a USB drive at night takes a few tries.
5. Most of the buttons have more than one functions. One function is printed right on the button, the other function for the same button is printed right below it. However, ONLY the button is lit, not the print below it. For example, the power button also acts as the mute button. But when the receiver is on, only the power symbol is lit, not "MUTE" which is written right below it. It is true for all buttons with more than one functions.
6. The dreaded DVD-loop issue. If you switched to a different source or turned the unit off while playing a DVD, next time it will only loop in the chapter it was last playing. Definitely a bad programming issue.
7. If you "mute" the unit while playing a CD or songs from USB, the mute will be automatically canceled and sound will come back on after the next song comes on. Really annoying - specially if you are on the phone with someone and suddenly the music comes on. I know this is not meant to be or that it is not a feature because the mute symbol stays on the display, even though the sound is heard. Again, bad programming.
8. The faceplate anchor design is merit-less at best. It has two plastic anchors sticking out from the unit where the faceplate latches on. These are plastic anchors about 1" long and they are just sticking out. If one of the breaks, the whole unit is useless. I will post a pic to show what I mean.
9. Absolutely no display customization. What comes with is what you get - and what comes with it is nothing. You can't change the display color/wallpaper/font/size - nothing.
10. USB operation is ridiculous at best. It shows all the songs in one list and the only way to navigate through them without the remote is to go up and down, which is painfully slow. You can go folder to folder using the remote. With the "UP" and "DOWN" symbols being not lit, it's inconvenient at night.
EDIT: I discovered that you can press and hold the up or down button to navigate from folder to folder. No mention of this in the manual.
11. If your mp3 folders have a pic such as an album art, this unit will get stuck at that, and it will ask you to put the parking brake on to view it - instead of just not showing the pic and moving on to the next song. If you have a lot of albums, you will need to manually remove all the album arts from the USB drive.
12. In the USB mode, it "eats" about 1 sec from the beginning of a song when it moves starts the next track. It's not as noticeable with the songs that start slow, but clearly annoying when a song starts out loud or with a beat, for example, Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. Don't know if this applies to CD tracks too.
13. It will recognize only 512 songs total in your USB drive. Now-a-days people have their whole music collection on a single chip. 512 songs limitation sets you back to 1999.
14. A lot of the DVD operations can only be performed using the remote. There are buttons on the faceplate that are inactive during DVD play which they could have easily put some functions on.
15. It is not compatible with all USB drives. I don't know which ones are okay but I have a USB drive that works fine everywhere but this gives me an error saying "UBS Bad".
16. No dedicated button for "search", meaning fast forward or reverse. So, if you want to FF a song or DVD chapter, you will have to press and hold ">>|" for about 5 secs and then it will do it only at 2x speed. Do the same again (another 5 secs) to go 4x. If you let go before that, it will just skip to the next song or chapter - and you will have to do it again.
17. The internal clock loses time like crazy!! It would be half to a minute behind in just a week.
18. No permanent brightness setting for the screen. All you have is Normal -> Dim -> Off, using the Dim button. You can't set the brightness to your liking. To make matter worse, the setting using "Dim" button is temporary. Once the unit is re-started (turn off/turn on), it goes to full brightness.
19. Finally, THIS UNIT IS SLOW!!! Navigating through songs or tuning stations, skipping songs, switching sources - much slower than even the cheapest receivers out there.
Now, some of things that I would have love to see and I could expect in a $400 receiver:
1. This unit should have been AT LEAST bluetooth ready.
2. It has this huge, rotary volume knob which is also used for Bass/Treble settings by pushing it. I think this would have been more useful is this was programmed to be used as "Enter" button, and putting the "Bass/Treble" settings in the settings menu. Now, the "AS" button acts as enter which is not even lit.
3. When the ignition is on and the faceplate is not on, there is a little triangle blue LED that flashes to show where to enter CD/DVD. I wish this LED would blink all the time so it would act as a theft deterrent.
4. When you enter the "Settings" menu where you can change equalizer/loudness etc, the music stops. So, you have no way to instantly compare the effect of different EQ or loudness settings. Wish the music didn't stop.
5. The faceplate carry-case/box is CHEAP!!! They should have included a little better case.
Like the title says, the only thing that makes things even is the ultra-low pricing of Amazon, which sometimes even include a free HD tuner. Otherwise, for more price I would suggest getting something else.

Clarion NZ409 7-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Clarion NZ409 7-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pro: the price was right with the nav and it is well integrated. The sound is right up there with the Alpine I had before. It does run my iPod Nano as advertised. When I played a DVD, it played the music but not the video (because the parking brake was not on)...that was cool.
Con: I tried as hard as I possibly could to find a DVD player that would let me search through the iPod titles...this unit is down near the bottom of that capability about the best you can do with the iPod is put it on shuffle or make some good playlists. It may be that the next generation of gear will do this, but for now, you're almost better off getting a unit with a aux jack on the front and using the ipod itself.
The Nav is good but is very different than the Garmin Nuvi I have. It gets a fix very quickly, but got totally confused yesterday when I tried to go to a nearby town using backroads. I had to turn the nav off after I made one turn it didn't like. The Garmin seems to recover better and recalculate your trip when something is wrong (like the road it wants to use is closed for construction).
The voice sounds like one of those answering phone synthetic voices that reads your credit card number back to you, not near as nice as the Garmin.
Once I get over how cool it is having it all-in-one, I will starting thinking about how much I spent to have a stereo that sounds about as good as the one I had before, plays an ipod almost the same as the one I had before, and has a nav almost as good as the one I had suction-cupped to my windshield that I could put in any car I drove.....it is cool having a touch screen and I guess that is the feature I really paid for.

Clarion VZ409 7-Inch Single-DIN Multimedia Station Review

Clarion VZ409 7-Inch Single-DIN Multimedia Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This headunit is great. Everything runs and sounds great. There are only two problems I have with it: I installed it myself, and I had an extremely hard time connecting the brake cord to my trucks parking brake signal cord, and as of now, I have yet to get it connected. The other problem is the iPod interface. It loads very quickly, but the scrolling is not very intuitive and it takes a very long time to scroll through the song/artist/album lists. Other than that, though, this is an extremely easy to use unit that is well worth the cost.

Clarion NX700 7" In-Dash Double-Din Touchscreen DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver, Built-in Navigation and Bluetooth Review

Clarion NX700 7 In-Dash Double-Din Touchscreen DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver, Built-in Navigation and Bluetooth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used the Clarion NX700 for more than a month, having replaced my beloved Panasonic Strada that saw its final demise at the hands of the cruel, 15-minute-torrential-rain gods of the southeastern United States. Lesson learned: even when it's 90 degrees and virtually cloudless in the south, keep your moonroof closed during your 45 minute meeting indoors!
The Clarion NX700 -- at the time of purchase a nearly brand new product -- won over its Kenwood, Alpine, and JVC competitors. (Sadly, Panasonic has left the entire car navigation/audio market and was therefore not an option.) The Clarion won for its comprehensive flash memory-based maps, its range of functionality built into the system, and its purported ease of use. The final package I purchased and had professionally installed included the NX700 navigation receiver and a rear view/backup camera integration. Bluetooth phone support was supposedly built into the receiver, and I opted to defer buying at a later date both the iPod/iPhone video cable and an integrated module for Sirius or XM satellite radio. Out the door including installation, taxes, etc., this purchased system was approximately $1500 new. ($200 was the professional install.)
At the time of purchase, there were no units available for me to try in person. The dealers I went to didn't have any on display, and so my decision was based entirely on their recommendations and what very little information could be found about the brand new product online. The lack of a demo unit was probably a good thing for Clarion as I'm not sure it would have positively impacted my purchase decision. The unit is exceptional in many regards, and downright frustrating in many others.
NAVIGATION
Presumably the most important aspect of the system for most users is the navigation, so I will start there. It is the strength of the Clarion NX700. Clarion's navigation antenna and software has excellent reliability; measurably improved over my 2007-era Panasonic Strada. It tracks my routes and destinations without issue and with reasonable speed. It is not the fastest unit I've used in calculating directions, but it's speed is not a problem; on the contrary, I'd say it's above average. The use of fast, Flash memory for storing the map database is a huge boost to its speed (and a point of soreness for the audio system, but more on that in a bit).
The map engine has three basic methods of display: (1) a traditional 2-D, flat birds-eye look at the area in which the map rotates as your vehicle does; (2) the same view with North always at a fixed position; (3) a 3-D map. In both 2-D and 3-D views, the map can show road elevation, points of interest, roads of many types, and all the different elements you would expect of any electronic map.
Like many navigation systems, the NX700 has the capability of displaying its map in normal colors and brightness, as well as in a "night mode" designed to reduce glare and eye strain in the dark. You can manually select day or night mode, or set it to "automatic". Ostensibly, this automatic setting will adjust between day and night...well...automatically. However, as of the date this review was written more than a month after installing the system, I have yet to be able to get the automatic function to work.
The unit comes with a POI database of approximately 12 million businesses, government offices, gas stations, restaurants, airports, and virtually any other type of location you might find in, say, a Yellow Pages. It is easily searchable and browsable, and is fast, and accurate. Updates to the database can be purchased online from [...], though I have yet to see any instructions or support for doing so on that site for US-based NX700 models. (As of the date of this review, the only instructions on the site apply only to European models, the NX700E specifically.)
The normal means of entering one or more destinations is through an obvious touchscreen button with a picture of binoculars on it. WIthin it, you can select a destination by entering it manually, finding it in the POI database, retrieving it from your list of previously taken routes, or from a list of your "Favorites". On screen you are given a natural, intuitive touchscreen keyboard that is highly responsive; fast to the touch -- much faster than any other in-dash navigation system I have used. When you are unclear about the full address of a manual entry, you can enter as much as possible and search from there, or specify street intersections or the center of a city. If you are driving long routes and know what general course you want to take from city to city but don't need to go to specific places within each city, this is an eminently useful function. Overall, I couldn't be happier with the system's ability to let you enter your destination quickly.
Selecting an entry from the POI database also displays the general information about it, including phone number. If you have your bluetooth phone connected, ostensibly it will place the call if you click on this. However, Bluetooth is still not working for me after more than a month, so I can't vouch for it. More on that in a bit.
But there is where my happiness with the navigation interface ends. The user interface for the map system is very stable, and generally acceptable (note that I only stipulated the map system; the audio system's user interface -- entirely different in style, colors, and function -- is leaps and bounds more clunky, cumbersome, and counter-intuitive). However, the navigation UI will take even the most experienced navigators some getting used to as things change in ways that seem somewhat counter intuitive. For example, you cannot enter multiple destinations all at once while creating your trip. Instead, you must enter your farthest end point first, let it calculate the route to get there, and then enter each of your intermediary locations as a "Via Point". One by one: each time you select a new via point, it will recalculate the entire route and take you back to the map with your turn by turn guidance. If you have more to enter, you must go back into the menus, add a new entry, and so on. If most of your trips are simply from Point A to Point B, this won't trouble you much. If you do a fair amount of long distance driving, or even short distance with multiple stops, however, this will feel a bit "odd" until you get used to it.
An additional oddity about the navigation interface is that the place you go to access certain functions actually changes depending on whether or not a route is active. For example, once you enter a route and it's active, clicking on the aforementioned binoculars touch button does not take you back to the same screen where you would enter an address, select a POI, change map settings, and so forth. It takes you instead to a detailed overview of your trip, how far you've gone and have left to go, a function for displaying the whole route fitted to the screen, and 3 different trip computers. While I admit all of this I've found very useful on many occasions, changing the expected behavior of a major button in the user interface is poor design, and is a constant frustration. For example, if you're driving along and decide you want to modify your route, change to a different route method (fastest, most economical, shortest, etc.), or add a new "Via Point", you'll find yourself clicking that button since that's where you did those things before, only to find it replaced by these new functions. (The button, oddly, still looks the same as it always did, however, hence the expectation it will always be the place you should go to find/enter addresses). Once a route is active, those destination and map settings functions relocate themselves to a much smaller, semi-transparent touch button on the lower right side of the display. It's labeled "Menu", and be sure to strain your eyes to see it as it fades to a semi-transparency while the route is active. It's a nice touch and it looks kinda neat, but something that important should not be moved from its normal location, nor should it be hard to see while driving.
Other elements of the navigation user interface that are worth mentioning are: zoom buttons that are large and easy to work with, but unfortunately disappear entirely while driving. To get them back takes only a quick touch of the map, but zoom strikes me as an important feature that Clarion might want to consider making available from a single touch. The NX700 also has a "Position" button for identifying exactly where you are (city, state, latitude, longitude, and so forth), a 2D/2D North/3D button for changing map views, and small, medium, and large area pre-set zoom levels. A neat feature of those zoom levels is that you can change their defaults to your preferred zoom levels and restore their factory defaults quite easily.
While driving, the NX700 can also optionally do an automatic zoom that changes the angle of the map, the zoom level, and other characteristics to more easily show you where you should be turning. On long stretches of road, it then zooms back out to give you a view ahead. Many devices have an automatic zoom, but the Clarion's is much easier to follow.
Like many more modern navigation systems, the NX700 also shows you lane information so you can easily identify what lane you should be in and from which lane to turn, as well as street names. Miss your turn, and the system confidently and quickly gets you back on track by recalculating your route. However, the NX700 does NOT have the ability to read out street or highway names with its voice guidance. The voice guidance is clear and easy to listen to (and selectable between a variety of male and female voices), but the lack of reading...Read more›

Clarion NX500 6.5" In-Dash Motorized Touchscreen DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver, Built-in Navigation and Bluetooth Review

Clarion NX500 6.5 In-Dash Motorized Touchscreen DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver, Built-in Navigation and Bluetooth

(More customer reviews)
Since the 1st reviewer really captured a lot of my feelings on this unit, I'll try to concentrate on or add some additional thoughts...
When researching the higher end offerings from Kenwood and Pioneer, I finally decided on Clarion's NX500 after I saw all of the features that were included for a price tag that was *at least* half the cost of anything comparable. For reference, I picked mine up for $579 from another online retailer.
Installation was a breeze in my Mercedes Benz ML320 using a Metra harness. I was especially pleased with the modular wiring setup in the back of the headunit. As the other reviewer mentioned, you only plug in the connections you plan to use. This all means less clutter and mess behind the dash. At the time of installation, I also installed the Sirius Direct Connect adapter and a rear view camera. Connections were very straightforward.
The navi system seems to be a hybrid between a Garmin and Honda/Acura unit. You have the ability to view the mapping aerially, or slightly angled (quasi 1st person). The system is adequate for getting you to your destination, although I would've liked to have seen an option that lists turn-by-turn directions on the right side of the split screen for better clarification similar to the software found in my Acura TSX. Guidance voice options include 2 sets of male and female voices. One set utilizes text to speech (TTS) and phonetically pronounces street names and highways. These voices are robotic sounding, and will literally pronounce names as they are spelled. For example, U.S. Highway 9 would sound like "us nine" vs "u-s nine". The other set of more human sounding voices merely give generic turn by turn directions such as "Turn left at next intersection" vs "Turn left at Broadway". A neat feature of the split screen option is that the time and distance to the next turn/checkpoint is displayed on the left side while the total remaining distance and estimated time of arrival are displayed on the right side. I did not have any issues w/ the unit keeping extremely accurate time as the other reviewer. I believe setting the time to sync via the GPS will solve his problem. The POI database in the nav software was fairly extensive and very helpful when in an unfamiliar area looking for a place to eat, a place to get gas, etc. Entering addresses to get routing guidance was fairly easy; however, destinations on main streets sometimes became sources of frustration. When trying to enter an address on Rt 46, I finally realized that the road was also known as "Main St". Having a HD based system allows quick re-routing when you deviate from the directions. While my Acura TSX and MDX would take a few seconds to "recalculate" a new route, the NX500 does it almost instantaneously. Nav reception via the GPS antenna is very strong. I mounted mine under the dash, and have had no issues whatsoever with getting located as soon as I turn on the vehicle. The reception is so strong that viewing the speedometer screen yielded identical results to the actual speedometer in my instrument cluster.
Sound quality was very good considering I am not running an aftermarket amp. If you're an audiophile, the limited EQ adjustments will feel limiting. For the average person, there are "preset" EQ settings for various types of audio such as "Rock", "Urban", or "Techno".
Sirius radio reception sounded CD clear in my vehicle. I did not get any hissing or "white" noise on any channel like the other reviewer did, nor has my sat radio ever locked up.
I also purchased a bypass module on e bay. Unlike Pioneers and other aftermarket headunits, you cannot simply ground the parking brake wire to the chassis. It requires a pulsing signal to mimick the release and re-engagement of the parking brake in order to operate any stereo function that includes video. I do not condone, nor recommend watching any video while operating the vehicle. For my purposes, I wanted the ability to adjust my nav destination w/o pulling the car over.
Ipod integration is ok --- all pertinent menus/data are available such as playlists, artists, songs, albums, etc. Unfortunately, however, you do not have the ability to quickly scroll through entries. I have over 5,000 songs on my 5G 30GB Video. Trying to select an artist beginning with a 'G' requires the continuous pressing of the down arrow. You cannot hold the button to accelerate the process.
The DVD function works well. The picture is very good, although it seems a tad washed out. Of course, this is a minor point as I rarely watch movies in the vehicle. Playing a CD is standard fare, but I was VERY disappointed in what appears to be a poor oversight in basic design. I used to be a vinyl DJ, and have a large collection of "continuous" mix CDs that I have not yet been able to transfer to my iPod. When playing a mix, the player will insert a 2-3 second gap between tracks, regardless if the CD was recorded without them. This can get rather annoying during a DJ set or live band performance.
The built-in bluetooth system makes this unit such a big upgrade over its predecessor because an additional, external modular add-on is not required (less mess behind the dash). Calls come in loud and clear through the vehicle's speakers, and a mic is built directly into the face of the stereo. I also installed the supplementary external mic in the vehicle to give me the option of choosing which mic to use, but callers on the other end have not reported any problem hearing me clearly when using the built-in mic. Music/video will pause and mute when a call is placed or received. My Verizon Blackberry Storm can synch its address book and call log w/o an issue. You can switch off to your handset in a snap with a dedicated button on the bluetooth screen interface. The other GREAT feature of the built-in bluetooth system is the ability to listen to Bluetooth audio. I frequently run Pandora and Slacker in the vehicle now from my Blackberry. I have so many "entertainment" options now, it truly is ridiculous. One gripe about this feature is that you can't view the nav screen at the same time.
As the other reviewer touched on, the biggest problem with this unit has to do with its visibility in bright sunlight. Because the screen is very smooth and gloss like, it reflects a great deal of glare during the day. I will try to remedy this with an anti-glare film and update at a later time. With all that said, after a month and a half of solid use, I would purchase this unit again in a heartbeat. I almost feel like I stole it, and cannot say enough about what a great value it really is. While it is not a supreme standout in any one area, it does everything fairly well. If you are looking for a good "quiver killer", I would highly recommend it.
Pros (to echo some of the 1st reviewer's sentiments):
1 - Ease of installation w/ no mess.
2 - Fast navigation due to HD based software; STRONG GPS reception.
3 - Clean sound, even w/o an amp.
4 - Easy addition of additional AV sources.
5 - POI database is robust.
6 - Built in bluetooth, especially the ability to stream BT audio (Pandora and Slacker in the car!!!)
7 - Tangible, physical buttons for volume control and source selectionCons (more nitpicking than anything else):
1 - Excessive glare in bright sunlight... hopefully this will be remedied w/ a simple anti-glare film.
2 - Can't use voicedial feature for making calls.
3 - Entering addresses could be a little cumbersome if you don't know the alternative names.
4 - No quick scroll feature for navigating through the iPod.
5 - Mix CDs don't play continuously.
6 - Can't view the nav screen when playing BT audio.
I hope this helps others who are trying to decide on a new DD unit for their vehicle. Thanks to the 1st reviewer for helping me make my own decision.
