Tom Tom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver Review

Tom Tom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this antenna for a couple of weeks now, and it only retrieved traffic info for two days. Since then, it connects to either of two radio stations in Atlanta and reports "no delays on route", even when I'm stuck in a two-hour traffic jam on I-285. Switching stations results in the "green dot" on the traffic monitor, and a further result of "no delays on route".
Several calls to TomTom tech support have been fruitless. The last time, they claimed their traffic server was down indefinitely. That would be bad enough, but the RDS-TMC information is not controlled by TomTom's service, it comes from Clear Channel's Traffic Network. The traffic server is only for their GPRS/Mobile Phone/TomTom Plus traffic service.
I had tried the TomTom Plus service prior to ordering the antenna, and it worked fairly well (when the traffic server was up) but I found the $19.95/month charge that T-Mobile added on to my bill to be a bit excessive when this antenna was supposed to do a comparable job.
I'm sending it back. If it was just an intermittent outage, I could understand that. Two solid weeks of "no traffic on route" while sitting in the I-285 parking lot for thirty-seven miles each way is ridiculous.

The TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver works by using TMC (Traffic Message Channel) technology. The receiver acquires information through an FM radio signal broadcast by regional providers. By simply connecting the new TomTom GO device to the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver, users will automatically receive traffic information via the TMC connection. Once a trip is planned, traffic alerts are clearly displayed in the traffic bar on the right hand side of the screen. When users tap the traffic bar, they receive further information, such as accident or traffic jam delays. The RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is compatible with the new TomTom GO 920 range, TomTom GO 720, TomTom ONE XL and TomTom ONE 3rd EDITION and provides seamless integration of RDS-TMC Traffic information with the user interface of the TomTom GO and ONE product ranges.

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all the good news. The display and automatic panning on the Tom Tom 910 are second to none. It is MUCH more visible than the Garmin Nuvi 350 and the automatic panning works much better. The actual mapping algorithms seemed to be approximately the same in both units neither, insofar as I was able to determine, having much of an advantage over the other. Mapping details on both units are excellent. Bright light visibility is outstanding - much better than the Nuvi.
The unit, compared to the Nuvi 350 and 360 is considerably larger and more cumbersome. Additionally, the mounting solution on the Nuvi is slightly better than that on the 910 - more compact. The voice prompts are loud, clear and timely. The ease of use is just great (with the exception of the POI implementation) and the visibility and quality of the display are great.
The bad news: POI access is cumbersome and poorly implemented. Hopefully a firmware upgrade will fix this problem in the near future. As it stands now, you cannot enter the name of the POI that you wish to go to without going through an intervening category screen made even more cumbersome by the fact that you may guess the category wrong! Then, the POIs only come up in alphabetical order or by distance. For me, this particular deficiency was the deal breaker. Selecting a POI must be as simple as possible in a AIO (all in one) GPS navigation solution. There are so many capabilities that you give up in these simplified AIO solutions that they should perform their designated functions easily and efficiently. The Nuvi does this, the 910 does not. The nuvi allows you to search POIs by name. The TomTom 910 does not.
This device is intended as an extremely simple point to point navigating AIO GPS navigation solution and is not intended to enable the use of way points or easily changing the course selected by the unit. You have essentially two options: the shortest route and the fastest route. Fortunately, the mapping program selects routs that are very acceptable. Personally, I like to look at the overall route and fiddle with it. This unit is not designed for such use. Microsoft Streets and Trips is ideal for this kind of tinkering, but terrible for point to point navigation while on the go.
Make sure and get the most recent firmware updates on the Tom Tom website which will fix the known bugs and further improve the functionality.
I give this unit a 3 star on form (compared to the elegant Nuvi), a 4 star on the functionality for which it was designed, and a 5 star on the beautiful bright display. You will not be disappointed in the beautiful display, the automatic panning, the actual map functionality or the bright light performance. But the POI solution is cumbersome and frustrating.

TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters Review

TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this unit for Christmas primarily for my bike, but once I purchase the car mount adapter it will be used in the car as well.
This is an excellent unit, to say the least. One reviewer mentioned that it's too difficult to turn the unit on- I say "hogwash". The pushbutton is stiff, yes, but that's done to keep the unit from turning on accidentally while in your jacket pocket or carry bag (and with a touch screen, you can well imagine how much mischief one could accidentally create if it turned on without your knowledge). Ditto with the Scala Rider headset- you don't want the thing accidentally turning on, running the battery down, do you?
Another reviewer mentioned that it doesn't have a "speedometer" or trip meter function- it most certainly does have a speedometer, and what I assume is the "trip meter"- but since TomTom set the unit from the factory to eliminate as much extraneous information as possible, you have to activate it in the menus. Once that has been activated, it'll be there until you turn that feature off. In fact, there are a great number of features you can turn on and off in the menus.
I found the documentation to be adequate, and to the point. The printed documentation is to get you up to speed until you charge the units and turn them on- it's easy sailing after that. The unit is very easy to use, and it has tutorials right on the unit, so in my opinion further paper documentation is rather redundant- actually, I think it's pretty smart on TomTom's part to include tutorials on the unit itself rather than supply a printed book- that way I don't have to carry around the book, as all of the information is already on the unit! They really don't say much about the bike power cable, but I can certainly understand why- it's not possible to provide information about every bike out there, and if you aren't familiar enough with your bike, or can't figure out how to install it, it's probably best to get someone who is (like your bike dealer) to do the installation.
I've got a Motorolla Razr phone, and the TomTom easily hooked up to my phone via Bluetooth, and it painlessly downloaded all of my phone numbers I have stored on the phone (thank you for providing this helpful feature!).
I do wish that it gave the street name when it gives you instructions to turn, but I soon got used to how it works- not only does the display give you very clear instructions on where to turn, it also gives you the street name. Once you get used to it, it's easy. But I would like the option of hearing the street name (my PDA does, but the map display isn't as easy to see as the TomTom). While playing with the unit as my father-in-law drove the car, I discovered one potential issue with having the street name spoken to you- what happens when the street name is changed, but your maps haven't been updated? If you rely on the spoken street name, you might miss it- it's best to take a glance at the screen to make sure you're taking the correct turn (I found one such road- the name has recently been changed, but the map showed the old name instead). Still, I'd prefer to have it spoken, and visually double-check the map.
Overall, I give the TomTom an A-. TomTom, if you're reading this, I'll give you an A+ if you guys update the software so that it'll give you the street name by voice- then you'll have the best bike GPS available! However, I'd still buy the unit as is. It would just increase the functionality by including this feature.

Tomtom One Limited Edition Review

Tomtom One Limited Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been lusting after many GPS systems the last 6 months but finally made my purchase today! This is my first GPS unit.
Let me first state that i've put the TomTom One LE through a 100 miles of testing already and im quite satisfied.
Its important to remember that this is an entry level system at a very good price ($139 if you look around). Having said that, here is a run down of my experience with it:
1. The box is a pain to open. I tried to do it carefully but in the end I tore it apart in my excitement to get to the unit so there is no way id return the unit in its original packaging.
2. I opened it in my car, plugged it into my car's outlet, and powered it on. It took less than a minute to fully boot up, then it asked me to set my preferences. Quite simple to set up. These preferences can always be changed later or set later if you want to skip that part.
3. The windshield mount snaps onto the back of the unit and sticks to the windshield very well, i drove over some bumps to make sure.
4. Connectivity is good out in the open, even in some mildly foresty area it was good. I have not driven through a tunnel but im quite sure it will lose signal temporarily.
5. Installing the software on my MacBook Pro was very very easy, all i did was plug it in, pull up the disk and run the TomTom Home software installer. Next i backed up the unit, this took a little while because the backup file is nearly 1 GB. Be sure to have enough space on your hard disk. Next, i downloaded the update and installed it to the unit. Done with that. The unit will charge with the provided USB cable.
6. My development is not on the map, not in Google Maps either so im not surprised. I picked the nearest intersection to my house and set that as my home. Navigating through the menus is quite simple if you are competent in the least. When entering addresses/zip codes it can be a little hard to use the keyboard when mounted on the windshield, but a little patience and practice goes a long way. You can always pull it off the windshield and enter whatever you need. I think the touch screen sensitivity is quite good, the keyboard responds with the keys you want to press. The screen brightness is adjustable and quite good. I've set mine to 100% daytime and 0% nighttime and im satisfied with that. The setting to change the screen from daytime mode to nighttime mode is only 2 screens away, so the whole deal with the light sensor on the more expensive units is a waste in my opinion. Nothing wrong with changing the setting manually.
7. POIs are prety nice. It won't find you the nearest Wal-Mart or Macy's, but it will find you shopping centers, ATMs/Banks, Beaches, Parks, Restaurants, etc. You can find the ones closest to your current location, closest to a favorite location, closest to home, etc. Can't really ask for more from a basic GPS unit like this one.
8. I love how the unit is compact, not much larger than my wallet. The screen may appear small initially but i think it is quite adequate. The 3D view works well and i can see POIs quite clearly as im driving on a road.
9. Routing is fairly good, on rare occasions it will prompt you to make a U-turn when possible. If you miss a turn it will calculate an alternate route within 15 seconds. Avoiding a part of a route is also easy to do, just 2-3 menu screens away. If you want to be warned of a turn 2 miles before the turn needs to be performed, you can tell it to do so.
Finally, the word on the 'Latest map guarantee' and TomTom Map Share:
1. The latest map guarantee is available for 30 days from when you first use the unit.
2. The Map Share feature is free for only 1 year.In conclusion, this is the unit to get if you are looking for a good basic GPS system to get you out of trouble. It'll work well if you have an address you need to get to, just put it in and be on your way. If you are stuck in traffic take a random exit and the unit will find you another way.
It will NOT find you every Wal-Mart around you, and it will not do text-to-speech meaning it will not say the street names (i don't think this feature is necessary at all, this unit will tell you the distance. If you are lusting for text-to-speech, once you start using this unit you'll get over it.)
I hope i've helped.

Got this for my wife for Christmas. I was skeptical and took the risk. the GPS arrived in an official TomTom XL-S box. Unit, quick guide, quick set-up / install poster, mount and mounting disc (if needed), car charger, and usb cord. There is a color printed card inside noting the item has been officially refurbished to factory specs. i believe the warranty was shorter (60 or 90 days). At first the unit did not power up, but just needed to charge via USB. Powered up fine after that. The outside of the unit looked brand new as did the other components. There is a more extensive manual online. I believe this full manual comes this way whether new or used. Everything functions like new. You have to donwload TomTom Home from the USA website and update the unit with the lastest updats and the like. The map on the unit WAS and IS an older version. You cannot just download a new set with "Lastest Map Guarantee" from TomTom. This is due to the age unit and nature of being refurbished. HOWEVER, TomTom will allow you to download the lastest map set per there "Lastest Map Guarantee" by simply calling and providing proof-of-purchase. This must be done within 30 days. I had set up my TomTom Home account online prior to calling and the like. This made life easier. two phone calls and three emails later I was off and running with installing the lastest available map set for ths XL-S. Make sure to tell them it is for the XL-S, as the serial number on my unit indicated XL in there system. The box said XL-S and the unit did indeed do spoken street names. There is separate card inside the box on how to enable the function. So far, my wife and I are very happy. Note, after the map install, the internal memory of the unit was pretty much at max. I would get the map update prior to trying to add anything at all the unit outside of the updated drivers from TomTom. Also, back-up the unit using TomTom Home AND copying all the internal contents from the unit to a folder on your computer. That way you are safe in case something happens. The SD memory DOES NOT supplement the 1 Gig internal memory. You will need at least a 2 Gig SD card and literally copy the entire contents of the internal memory, including ALL hidden files, to the SD card. Put the "duplicate" card in the unit after this and it will run off the SD card memory. Internal memory is NOT used, neither is it updated or affected my TomTom Home download and add-ons as long as you are running off the SD card. You will need to leave the card in. This way you will have about 1 Gig of space on the SD card to download voices, etc. Computer voices are the only ones that can read Text-to-Speech. I am not sure if there a limit to the SD card size you can use if higher than 2 Gig as it may only be able to allocate up to 2 Gigs only. If you can use a larger one, the better. So if someone knows this let me know. Again, pleased with the purchase and the fact I could get the latest free one-time map download. Nice big display and accurate (at least in the realm of the competition). Very simple to use, which is a plus. Some of the latest updates give and take away some functional items on the unit (i.e. menus and the way the compass function will changed). This is due to TomTom updating, so don't think you are nuts. Hopefully the change the compass function back to way to was. Worth the risk...YES...if the price is right. AMAZON was very quick to ship and I have never had a problem with them. Only thing I can say about Amazon.com is the way they pack items when shipping them could be better in some cases. Sometimes they use little to know padding. This minimal approach is understandable, but should be item dependent. I have gotten DVD that have been loose inside the DVD box because the DVD box had tons of room to move around inside the shipping box. The GPS unit was packed well. Other than this, Amazon.com is a highly recommended seller in my eyes.

TomTom ONE Carry Case and Strap Review

TomTom ONE Carry Case and Strap
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This case is minimalistic -- yes, size is a nice fit, but it's a lot softer case than you'd expect -- and bullet-proof nylon is better protection given the sensitive touch screen. This also gets weaker over time -- and gets more and more flimsy -- there's just not much to it, other than size. I recommend "The Sherpa" Swissgear, Medium Camera Case by WENGER -- didn't see it on Amazon's site (and they carry a bunch of WENGER products), but they should get it -- it's great for cameras as well, but is perfect for my Tom Tom ONE 3rd Gen -- and isn't flush against the inside edges on the sides, like most -- and doesn't shift at all. I paid $13.99 locally for it and tested about 20 bags/cases in the store until settling on that one. The best case for these is one with hard case and soft, cushion for face -- even one where the face never touched a surface would be perfect -- and for $25 (list price for this unit), you'd think TomTom would do it right. If they put time and effort into this design, I'd spend $30 or more. Also, the Sherpa has a nice belt strap that some people mentioned was a plus.
Hope that's helpful. I think I've spent about 10 hours or more testing Garmin, TomTom's, etc. -- and definitely don't want to risk damage to your unit.
Please note that my goal for the case is to take it with me on trips -- not carry it day to day, from car to car, so that may influence your decision.

There is just one downside to this case that I have come across: It does not seal all around the GPS leaving places for dirt and grime to get in. I also have the gray padded tomtom case that zips closed. Although not as "fancy" as this carry case, it is more functional for keeping the GPS safe from the elements.

This TomTom unit works well, screen is easy to understand, and using it is simple. I had a Magellan before, would NEVER buy one again. Magellan's customer Service is horrible, TomToms support is much better and their website allows you to upgrade sattelite locations on your unit, so if you turn it on while you're driving, it finds you in less than a minute. The Magellan takes 5 - 10 minutes in the same situation!
There are less points of interest on the TomTom, but that's not that important to me. Most of the time I have an address or I'm looking for a gas station or hotel, which are usually listed.

TomTom ONE USB Battery Charger

When I got my Tom Tom One, there was a quick start guide that was to say the least inadequite. One of the things they left out was the fact that you can charge your Tom Tom using the USB cable connected to your computer. Insted they have a stern warning in their quick start guide suggesting you spend 30 bucks more to buy the Charger. The Charger works fine, but I don't think much of Tom Tom's business ethics in not including detailed information about their product when the consumer purchases it so you don't end up spending money on things you really don't need. For that reason, I wouldn't give Tom Tom any stars.

Wonderfully versatile, the TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle Navigation System is a Bluetooth-enabled device that can work just about anywhere in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Canada for route planning, traffic and weather updates, and cell phone communication. And because your ONE navigation system has so many uses, you will want to use it outside your vehicle as much as inside. That's where the TomTom ONE USB Battery Charger comes in. Designed for the internal lithium ion battery that powers the TomTom ONE, the battery charger gives you an alternative to recharging through your vehicle's cigarette lighter. All you need is a standard wall socket in your home, workplace, or hotel room, and you be able to recharge your navigation system's battery through the ONE's built-in USB port. And because the USB charger has an automatic cutoff that won't overcharge your battery, your navigation system will not only last longer, but will also be available for use more hours of the day. For convenience that simplifies your fast-moving lifestyle whether you're driving or parked, the TomTom ONE Battery Charger is an essential accessory.

Arkon Travelmount Mini-Mount for TomTom GPS Navigators Review

Arkon Travelmount Mini-Mount for TomTom GPS Navigators
Average Reviews:

I bought this mount so that I could attach my new TomTom 730 to the Braketron beanbag mount for the dashboard of my car. (The supplied windshield mount won't let you mount it on a dashboard in a way that lets you see the screen). The mount is quite adjustable vertically. The end that attaches to the GPS allows some sideways movement and a small amount of fore and aft tilt. It comes with three different mounting plates for different brands of GPS devices. Check the company web site to see if this mount is suitable for your GPS. Sadly it does not solidly connect to my TomTom GO 730 (which is why I gave it a 3 - it would probably rate higher with a different device). Although the GPS will attach to it, it does not take much effort to pop the GPS off of the mount (say when you're trying to fine tune the angle of view and your hand happens to push the GPS).
It connects solidly to the Braketron.

ARKON TTO121-USB TomTom ONE Lighter Socket Mount with integrated Mini USB Power for TomTom ONE Review

ARKON TTO121-USB TomTom ONE Lighter Socket Mount with integrated Mini USB Power for TomTom ONE
Average Reviews:

I bought one of these because in California (and Michigan) it's illegal to have your GPS on the window. My Tom Tom wasn't sticking well to the little disk that you can put on your dash. The upside of this product is that the GPS definitely isn't going to fall down and surprise you while driving. However, it also doesn't hold especially firmly in the socket either. From time to time it will flip all the way to one side - but at least that isn't as shocking as having it fall in your lap and it won't lead to a car accident. Also, at times I have to twist this a bit when I realize the power isn't actually connecting. The one piece that I didn't consider, and wish I had, was where my sockets are. They are down so low that I have to look way down to see my GPS - but that's my fault, not the product's fault. I had, however, pictured that this arm extended upward more than it did. My favorite thing about this product is that you don't have to deal with a long cord getting in the way, like with regular setups.

The first mount was lost by my brother. The second broke easily. This on is perfect. It's strong. The suction device makes it easy to put on or take off. I didn't see that in the description or picture. The device can hold your GPS in different angles. Also they gave me a mounting plate as well. Haven't use it, but good idea.
By the way, I had the old school Tom Tom One, Not the Tom Tom One XL.

Maxx Digital PN3000 Explorer I 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Maxx Digital PN3000 Explorer I 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I, too, was impressed by the price of this product. While I wasn't blessed with an $89 tag, $129 was far better than the $300+ the other big boys were asking. Not being at all familiar with the fancies of the more expensive models, I was thrilled for something simple.
The product claims to have Alaska loaded onto the CD, and the sales guy at Office Depot assured me it was fairly simple to get it onto the little disk that inserts, but not so! It keeps telling me that there is not enough space. I've taken out everything but the english folder, and the two US maps, and even then, no room.
I see now that I have to buy a far larger digital storage device and that $129 price tag is gonna cost me a bit. Let's hope that works!
I also found it frustrating that there is no wall plug to charge it with, and that I can't find a way to change my "home" to my Texas address. It apparently thinks my world starts on Canal Street in New York.
At any rate, it's not a bad deal for the money, but be aware that the more you pay, the more likely you are to get it ALL in one box.

Body Glove 8601702 3.5-Inch GPS Hard Shell Case Review

Body Glove 8601702 3.5-Inch GPS Hard Shell Case
Average Reviews:

I gave this case a 3-star rating because the demensions provided are way off. Other than that, it is a good case. I purchased two of these from Amazon to protect something other than GPS units. The demensions are shown on the Amazon site to be 1.6" x 5" x 6.6", which would have been perfect for my use. Those measurements may be close to the demensions in millimeters, but not in inches. The interior demensions are actually 1.1" x 3.3" x 4" as printed on the package, and the exterior demensions are 1.4" x 3.8" x 4.6". I'll find a use for the cases, but I still need two more cases that will satisfy my needs.
