(More customer reviews)Got this for my wife for Christmas. I was skeptical and took the risk. the GPS arrived in an official TomTom XL-S box. Unit, quick guide, quick set-up / install poster, mount and mounting disc (if needed), car charger, and usb cord. There is a color printed card inside noting the item has been officially refurbished to factory specs. i believe the warranty was shorter (60 or 90 days). At first the unit did not power up, but just needed to charge via USB. Powered up fine after that. The outside of the unit looked brand new as did the other components. There is a more extensive manual online. I believe this full manual comes this way whether new or used. Everything functions like new. You have to donwload TomTom Home from the USA website and update the unit with the lastest updats and the like. The map on the unit WAS and IS an older version. You cannot just download a new set with "Lastest Map Guarantee" from TomTom. This is due to the age unit and nature of being refurbished. HOWEVER, TomTom will allow you to download the lastest map set per there "Lastest Map Guarantee" by simply calling and providing proof-of-purchase. This must be done within 30 days. I had set up my TomTom Home account online prior to calling and the like. This made life easier. two phone calls and three emails later I was off and running with installing the lastest available map set for ths XL-S. Make sure to tell them it is for the XL-S, as the serial number on my unit indicated XL in there system. The box said XL-S and the unit did indeed do spoken street names. There is separate card inside the box on how to enable the function. So far, my wife and I are very happy. Note, after the map install, the internal memory of the unit was pretty much at max. I would get the map update prior to trying to add anything at all the unit outside of the updated drivers from TomTom. Also, back-up the unit using TomTom Home AND copying all the internal contents from the unit to a folder on your computer. That way you are safe in case something happens. The SD memory DOES NOT supplement the 1 Gig internal memory. You will need at least a 2 Gig SD card and literally copy the entire contents of the internal memory, including ALL hidden files, to the SD card. Put the "duplicate" card in the unit after this and it will run off the SD card memory. Internal memory is NOT used, neither is it updated or affected my TomTom Home download and add-ons as long as you are running off the SD card. You will need to leave the card in. This way you will have about 1 Gig of space on the SD card to download voices, etc. Computer voices are the only ones that can read Text-to-Speech. I am not sure if there a limit to the SD card size you can use if higher than 2 Gig as it may only be able to allocate up to 2 Gigs only. If you can use a larger one, the better. So if someone knows this let me know. Again, pleased with the purchase and the fact I could get the latest free one-time map download. Nice big display and accurate (at least in the realm of the competition). Very simple to use, which is a plus. Some of the latest updates give and take away some functional items on the unit (i.e. menus and the way the compass function will changed). This is due to TomTom updating, so don't think you are nuts. Hopefully the change the compass function back to way to was. Worth the risk...YES...if the price is right. AMAZON was very quick to ship and I have never had a problem with them. Only thing I can say about Amazon.com is the way they pack items when shipping them could be better in some cases. Sometimes they use little to know padding. This minimal approach is understandable, but should be item dependent. I have gotten DVD that have been loose inside the DVD box because the DVD box had tons of room to move around inside the shipping box. The GPS unit was packed well. Other than this, Amazon.com is a highly recommended seller in my eyes.

TomTom ONE Carry Case and Strap Review

(More customer reviews)This case is minimalistic -- yes, size is a nice fit, but it's a lot softer case than you'd expect -- and bullet-proof nylon is better protection given the sensitive touch screen. This also gets weaker over time -- and gets more and more flimsy -- there's just not much to it, other than size. I recommend "The Sherpa" Swissgear, Medium Camera Case by WENGER -- didn't see it on Amazon's site (and they carry a bunch of WENGER products), but they should get it -- it's great for cameras as well, but is perfect for my Tom Tom ONE 3rd Gen -- and isn't flush against the inside edges on the sides, like most -- and doesn't shift at all. I paid $13.99 locally for it and tested about 20 bags/cases in the store until settling on that one. The best case for these is one with hard case and soft, cushion for face -- even one where the face never touched a surface would be perfect -- and for $25 (list price for this unit), you'd think TomTom would do it right. If they put time and effort into this design, I'd spend $30 or more. Also, the Sherpa has a nice belt strap that some people mentioned was a plus.
Hope that's helpful. I think I've spent about 10 hours or more testing Garmin, TomTom's, etc. -- and definitely don't want to risk damage to your unit.
Please note that my goal for the case is to take it with me on trips -- not carry it day to day, from car to car, so that may influence your decision.

(More customer reviews)This TomTom unit works well, screen is easy to understand, and using it is simple. I had a Magellan before, would NEVER buy one again. Magellan's customer Service is horrible, TomToms support is much better and their website allows you to upgrade sattelite locations on your unit, so if you turn it on while you're driving, it finds you in less than a minute. The Magellan takes 5 - 10 minutes in the same situation!
There are less points of interest on the TomTom, but that's not that important to me. Most of the time I have an address or I'm looking for a gas station or hotel, which are usually listed.

Note to people who complain about the TomTom suction cup mount not sticking to the windshield: There is a lock and unlock position on the mount. I've never had the mount fall off the glass if it was turned to lock position.

One of the things they left out was the fact that you can charge your Tom Tom using the USB cable connected to your computer. Insted they have a stern warning in their quick start guide suggesting you spend 30 bucks more to buy the Charger. The Charger works fine, but I don't think much of Tom Tom's business ethics in not including detailed information about their product when the consumer purchases it so you don't end up spending money on things you really don't need. For that reason, I wouldn't give Tom Tom any stars.

(More customer reviews)The TomTom 720 doesn't come with a case, but you should probably get one if you don't want to get it all scratched up taking it in and out of your car. After doing some research, the one xl was the best looking case I could find online. My cost was $44, which included tax and shipping. When it arrived, I wasn't disappointed: the one xl is made of a sturdy yet soft leather, fits the 720 like a glove, and has nice looking reverse stitching (for those in to aesthetics). The only complaint I have is that for the life of me, I can't figure out where to attach the wrist strap. There is no hole or hook on either the case or the 720 unit that I can find, and there are no instructions included with the unit. I'm either missing something totally obvious or this is a fairly substantial design flaw. Either way, it should be a lot easier to figure out (it's a wrist strap for crying out loud) so I docked the case a full star in my review.

You can argue back/forth about the gps abilities of the two brands, but there is one BIG negative that the Garmin has vs. Tom Tom. The Garmin navigation screen is pretty, but information poor. No distance to objective. No speed. No miles travelled. No street names as you pass them. And no option to see any of that except by slecting a different screen. Tom Tom lets you see all of that on the navigation screen. If you never had it, you may not miss it. Once you have had it, if you buy a Garmin, you will regret doing it.

It doesn't add weight, which is great since I always put my TomTom in my purse whenever I leave the car. I do worry that the "string" connecting the wrist strap to the case my break since it seems very thin, so I don't use the strap.

(More customer reviews)I have this and used side by side with a Garmin 200 W for several weeks before returning the Garmin. Overall this is a good product but a few annoying bugs keep it from being great...here are the pros and cons
Pros
It finds the satellites quickly and keeps the signal. The garmin took 2-3 minutes almost every time from a power up start (this was the deal killer)
The user interface is nicer and has a lot more options than the garmin.
The POI database (such as the POI categories it actually has - it is missing several major US retail chains - see below) is more up to date than the Garmin I bought at same time.
Allows you to set the keyboard to QWERTY mode which the Garmin did not.cons
The graphics are a bit grainy compared to the garmin
The bluetooth is useless, works only for data transmission/reception and that too with very limited number of phones. No, you cannot use it as a handsfree.
If you take a wrong turn or pass by your destination or do anything to pass by your destination on a 2 lane road, it will not tell you to turn around - it will navigate you through the next set of intersections. In rural areas this can mean a 20 mile trip instead of going back 200 yards.
The text to speech works very unpredictably - it pronounces some name very nicely but mangles others horribly such that you can't recogonize it.
Also it announces street names about a quarter mile before and then simply says turn left or right when you are actually at an intersection and want the street name to turn into. This is annoying. Very annoying.
There is an SD card slot. However the unit works either exclusively with the SD card slot or with the internal memory. Which means that you have to reload everything in internal memory onto the SD card which takes about an hour because of the incredibly s-l-o-w data transfer rates.
Also the internal memory is pretty much full so forget about any upgrades unless you spring for at least a 2 GB or more SD card
Strangely, TomTom doesn't know about major US retail chains like Toys R Us, Payless Shoes etc. This even after I updated the unit with the US Retail POI database file
The color schemes available on the unit and online are completely weird. Seems to have been done by people with zero taste and sensiblity.
The internal battery is useless in cold weather (i.e. if you leave the unit in the car in winter). This after a few weeks. It either dies in a few minutes or doesn't fire up at all. Will have to see how it performs in the summer.
The brightness and contrast are so-so in daylight compared to the garmin 200 w

(More customer reviews)I had my choices narrowed down to the TomTom ONE XL and the Magellan Maestro 4040. It was a tough call but I choose the TomTom. In a nutshell, the TomTom is more designed to get you where you need to go and the Magellan is designed to tell you where you are and what's around you.
The Magellan has more current maps and identifies the roads that appear on the screen. The TomTom has fairly current maps but only identifies the roads you are approaching and a few adjacent roads.
TomTom has auto-zoom where the faster you travel, the map zooms out. The Magellan has the zoom feature but nothing automatic. I like the auto-zoom because when your traveling interstates speeds, it's nice to see out ahead of you.
I think the TomTom has the better screen, by a slight edge. The colors/contrast seem to be more pleasant. On the TomTom you've got various map colorizations where the Magellan doesn't. There's one map scheme on TomTom where the roads are outlined in black. It helps distinguish them from the tan background.
Tap the screen on the Magellan and you can scroll around the map. Tap it on the TomTom, you go to the menus. What I'd like to see is a menu button and if you tap on the screen, it tells you where your tapping (i.e. road name).
Reception on TomTom and the Magellan was great and the screen refresh on the TomTom was slightly better than the Magellan. The Magellan seemed more choppy where the TomTom was smooth.
Magellan can double as a speakerphone and the TomTom has the PLUS services.
While I would like TomTom to allow you to show more road names, in the end, this didn't justify the price difference of the Magellan (about $100). I think if you combined these two devices, you'd come close to having a perfect GPS unit.
As they stand, I think the TomTom has a slight edge mainly due to it's screen clarity, redraw/refresh rate, and auto zoom (the various voices you can choose from is a nice touch too).
TomTom, if you're listening on the next map update, please allow us to see road names on any road that appears on the screen! A menu button would be nice too and as an alternative, allow us to tap/identify the roads.

(More customer reviews)I haven't used many GPS systems before so this is more of a review of this individual system as it stands on its own and not comparing it to other systems. Living in a large city, I don't own a car, but recently I needed to make a trip that entailed visiting 7 or 8 locations all within a few hours of each other (in a rental car). I knew that I might have to change the order of when I would get to each location or possibly not go to them all. Not being very familiar with the area I figured that it might be a good idea to get a GPS. This unit worked perfectly for the whole trip. I programed in each address before leaving and saved it as a favorite location which made picking a new destination really easy while driving. All of the directions accurate, and the computer voice was easy to understand (and you have a choice of a few voices as well). I'm not sure how many 'favorite' locations you can put in but I had in over 10 so you can enter at least that many.
Here's a list of other features that I liked:
- It came with a lighter/power cord for the car.
- Came with a USB cable to charge on the computer.
- You can update maps on the computer and backup your maps/info.
- It actually came with Macintosh software!! (as well as Windows of course)
- It came with a very useful suction cup holder to attach to the front windshield (it worked very well and never came off)
- This is a refurbished unit but it looked brand new. I didn't even see a small scratch on the unit.
- I liked the night mode that had darker colors.
- There is an option to have the volume adjust based on your car speed.
- It is small enough to put into a pocket or bag when you leave the car.
- I didn't use them but it has a bicycle mode and a walking mode.
- You can buy updates to maps or other map locations online.
Some features that you may not like:
- It doesn't say the name of the street you need to turn onto. (I didn't really mind that, though)
- The screen is pretty small. I actually liked it this way though, as I didn't want it to take up too much of my view out the front window. But if you have trouble reading small text it might be hard to see what the exit is, etc. Some elements, like your speed or arrival time are pretty small.
- When you first turn it on it can take 4 or 5 minutes to locate the GPS satellites. (not sure how this compares to other units)
- It would probably be hard to enter a new address while you're driving as the screen is pretty small. That's why I pre-entered them before hand.
- You have to go through a few menus to change the volume. Not too bad if your parked but if you're driving it can be a little tricky. (Don't crash)
I think that's about it. Again, I'm not sure how this compared to other portable units or other built in units but for what I wanted this was perfect, especially for the price and as of this writing there is a rebate as well.

I was worried about the possibility of it not coming with the most recent map updates (see the reviews for the TomTom ONE XL-S refurbished unit), but I went ahead and bought it anyway since I was being frugal. The GPS came packaged nicely and did not have any blemishes or anything on it. I used it for the first time on a several day trip to Phoenix, where I really got to experience the functionality of the device.
Some good points:
-- the 4.3" screen is nice, and I would recommend this screen size over the 3.5" models.
-- the set-up is relatively easy (which was great since the instruction manual is a joke!).
-- TomTom has a pretty cool website (TomTom HOME) for you to use to get necessary updates your GPS, download accessories, etc.Some bad points"
-- the instruction manual is a joke. Thankfully, I had a vague sense of what to do because I'd used a GPS once before.
-- the car adapter plugs in to the bottom of the unit in a way that is a bit unwieldy and awkward.
-- you can only get the street names spoken with the computer-generated voice. If you chose any of the more human-sounding voices, the street name function will not work.
-- whenever you download a new map or map update, you lose your saved favorites. You have to manually re-enter them or save the file from before you updated.
-- it took forever for me to figure out how to cancel a destination once I was already en-route. Since there is no help in the instruction manual, I just had to start pressing areas of the screen to get the device to take me to the right menu screen!
-- AND VERY IMPORTANTLY: The unit I received came with a map that was 4 quarters (i.e., one year) old. This was a risk based on some other reviews, even though the product description said the device comes with the most updated map or comes with the latest map guarantee. So, I read up on the other TomTom refurb units that Amazon sells, and people were saying that it was relatively easy to get TomTom to give you an updated map. So, I called the customer service line and talked to a rep. He said that I needed the map guarantee certificate that came in the box, but I did not receive one. (FYI: some reviewers of the refurbished TomTom ONE XL-S unit said they got this in the box along with their GPS). Since I didn't have a certificate, the rep said it was unlikely I would get a new map. However, I was determined to get my update, so I pressed a bit further. The rep said maybe I could just send in my proof of purchase (Amazon receipt) and we'll see what happens. (You can fax it or send it as an attachment through a website.) I did that, and lo and behold, I got an email message the NEXT DAY saying that my map update had been uploaded to my TomTom HOME account. I downloaded it the next day without any problems. So, despite the reluctance of the customer service rep, I got my new map!
Overall, the unit works well, though the spoken street names can be bit hard to understand at times. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could.

(More customer reviews)This product is extremely easy to use - I only found one or two of the very extensive options to be a little unintuitive, but after less than a couple hours of poking around the features you really get a glimpse of the depth of the product. It may not have a few of the features that the $400+ models carry, but for my needs it far meets and exceeds. I was a little disappointed when it wouldn't find a numbered address on a highway ( such as when a smaller state highway runs through a city street ), but the database of points of interest had my destination on file.
I was somewhat concerned about the voice volume issue that I'd read about in a few of these reviews ( after already having put my purchase order in ), but I'd have to say any units with poor volume have to be from a bad batch - even at the default 70% volume it was clearly audible with music playing and a window open at highway speeds. At max volume you really can't miss it unless you have difficulty hearing in general, though I found a few of the default voices were softer than others. Since it seems possible to create your own voice sets, and some voice sets are louder than others, I would assume one could edit a copy of the default voice and increase the gain / volume and reinstall, but there are a number of built in voices that are wholly satisfactory in the volume department.
If I had to list any cons, it would be that base package voices still show up in the menu even if you remove them from the TomTom with the manager software. The inability to find an address on a highway might be a weakness of all navigators for all I know, as I've not had much experience with any others.
If you buy this, definitely spend some time with the management software. There is a goodly amount of user supplied content ( maps, points of interest databases, and even voices ) that are free, as well as the normal software updates.
When I left the store with it the most difficult part of setting it up was getting it out of the evil tough plastic packaging that most of us are familiar with. A car charger was included, so I plugged it in, answered a few basic questions, did a short tour and was on my way to my next destination within only a few minutes. Normally I can't find my way out of a paper bag, even if I'm still outside of the bag, so this is probably the best $200 I've ever spent. A separate data cable is also included for connecting to your home PC ( which will be required to update the software and add new features to the device ).
There is an optional attachment and service you can purchase that will give you real time weather and traffic data. I understand that there is a monthly fee for this additional service, but I've not yet bought the extra receiver so I can't comment on its performance or cost.
In short - if you want a very well rounded GPS navigator for an excellent price, you can't go wrong with the XL 330. I know what a few friends and family are getting for the holidays this year.
