TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

I bought the TT GO 720 last week and it replaced my Garmin StreetPilot C340 that I gave to my partner. This device is very cool with lots of options. I'm very "tech" savvy so I like the fact that it allows for some
modification/personalization. Saying that it's not ideal for the average user. Garmin is much easier to use right out of the box without having to read any instructions at all. Some of the positives are the bluetooth capability which allows me to connect my Blackberry Pearl 8100 for hands-free calling. Unfortunately my phone is not compatible with the "GO-PLUS" features, for that I must have the device connected to my PC. The map layout is easy to see and the audio is very clear with the "text-to-speech" function. I also LOVE the fact that I can buy a cable for my
iPod and control it using the GO 720....that's great since I will no longer have to look down to change a song anymore. My biggest complaint by far is the lack of "Points of Interest" loaded. I think my Garmin came with over 6 Million POI's and the TT GO 720 has something in the 500,000 range. HUGE DISPARITY!! Without updating and loading dozens of separate POI files this thing couldn't even find local stores, gas

I have tried a Garmin 680 and a Tom Tom Go 720. You can argue back/forth about the gps abilities of the two brands, but there is one BIG negative that the Garmin has vs. Tom Tom. The Garmin navigation screen is pretty, but information poor. No distance to objective. No speed. No miles travelled. No street names as you pass them. And no option to see any of that except by slecting a different screen. Tom Tom lets you see all of that on the navigation screen. If you never had it, you may not miss it. Once you have had it, if you buy a Garmin, you will regret doing it.

TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

I really love the 720. I have tried the Garmin Nuvi and just didn't like the software nearly as much as the TomTom. Entering addresses is really fast and you only see towns in the state you are looking in. This means no more having to scroll through 30 different Springfields to get to the one you are searching for. You can hide the keyboard to see a long list of close matches so instead of having to type out the full city or street name you can just hit the first few letters and then pick from a list.
Mapshare seems like it will be a huge advance in the world of automotive GPS devices. Is a street marked as open when it should be blocked? Just correct the error with a few quick taps on the screen and it's fixed. What's really the big advance though is the ability to share my corrections with all other TomTom owners. I connect the 720 to the TomTom HOME software and it downloads corrections that other users have submitted.
What you see on the screen can be fully customized so that if you want the status bar on the side then you can put it there or you can leave it on the bottom. You can also decide what information is shown in the status bar. You can show or hide the time of day, remaining time, remaining distance, current heading, and your current rate of speed. If you subtract items from the status bar the other items automatically get bigger to take up the remaining space. You can also select if you want to show the current street you are on and the name of the next street you will be turning on to.
Text to speech quality is very good and will say the directions so for example it might say "in 250 feet keep right, then take the exit right, 204B towards Westview." Or "in 200 meters, turn right South West Madison Avenue." You can choose from multiple voices although I think the Dave voice sounds the best of the bunch. If you don't want to hear the "keep to lane" instructions you can disable this feature although I personally like to have it on. You can also record your own spoken instructions so for example you could have your kid's voice tell you to turn left in 200 feet. I haven't tried this though.
The screen is very bright and easy to see even when I have my sunglasses on. The 720 can be set to automatically turn the brightness down as it gets dark thanks to a built in light sensor on the front of the unit.
The mount is pretty clever and super easy to use. Just push it up to the windshield and it sticks right on. The 720 then just slides right on and is held solidly in place. You can turn the 720 in any direction to get it exactly where it's easiest for you to see.
With all the great features of the 720, I think what will really set it apart even more from the other GPS units out there is the Mapshare feature. Being able to fix your own map and download updates automatically to keep the map up to date is one of those things that is so fantastically great that you wonder why on earth it took so long to make to a shipping product. Whether or not it can live up to the expectations remains to be seen. Even if you took Mapshare away it's still the best car GPS I've ever used. With it, there's just no contest.
My biggest complaint is that there's no case in the box. You need to buy one separately although I've been using the plastic holder it shipped in so far which is OK.

The TomTom GO 720 Color GPS Navigation System with Mapshare is one of the newest, and most advanced GPS navigators to date, from one of the most trusted names in vehicle navigation. The GO 720 features a high-quality finish with an extremely elegant and slim design that allows it to not only complement any car's interior, but also fit perfectly and easily in your hand or shirt pocket so it can go anywhere you do. Despite its sleek and portable size, the TomTom GO 720 is packed full of all the functionality you need to easily get where you are going, as well as a ton of features to make your trip as safe and enjoyable as possible.
Top-Notch User Interface and Software The GO 720 is operated via an award-winning, intuitive user interface, and is ready to go right out of the box so as soon as you switch it on you can start using it. This navigator comes with the latest and most complete maps of the USA and Canada pre-installed for door-to-door navigation anywhere across the North American continent. Providing easy and quick access to extensive information such as building footprints and live traffic information, the unit includes multiple information options for personalization to your needs. What's more, the 720 is fully future proof, with new maps and free software upgrades available through TomTom's "Home" service so you'll never be out of date.

Simple, Easy Navigation TomTom's GO 720 uses a 4.3-inch, extra-wide, touch-screen LCD display that features anti-glare technology for easy viewing even in direct sunlight. Realistic and clear visual instructions are provided with high-quality 3D graphics, while spoken instructions tell you where you need to go in your own language. Using the latest technology, the 720 provides you with fast and accurate positioning, with fast route calculation and automatic re-calculation so it's virtually impossible to get turned around. You can even record your own navigation instructions, for either places you know best, or for planning out trips in advance based on the recommendations of others.

The GO 720 is as safe as it is convenient, and comes with a host of safety preferences. This unit helps ensure safe and efficient driving by doubling as a hands-free kit via Bluetooth technology, which is becoming essential as more states pass laws against driving while talking into a handset. With dual microphone support and a built-in high-quality speaker your phone calls are as clear as a bell, and with convenience features such as automatic call pick-up you can truly concentrate on your driving. However, if for some reason your concentration does lapse, this device includes a selectable speeding alert to keep you from accruing expensive tickets.

Extra Features The GO 720 is full of functionality, such as a tip feature, a customizable status bar, an extensive guided tour, and even a 'Help me!' menu, so it guides you through its usage as much as to your destination. It also features a personalized shortcut menu, 'current location icon' options, and millions of POIs (points of interest) so you can find what you need wherever you are like a lifetime local was riding shotgun. Taking navigation beyond just convenience, the 720 lets you play your music wirelessly over your vehicle's stereo system via its built-in MP3 player and FM transmitter. Now you can enjoy your music on the 720, all while seamlessly providing navigation instructions and still handling your hands-free phone calls. This amazing navigation device even provides you with a document viewer and photo viewer, so you can take your work with you or instantly download and enjoy your holiday photos wherever you go.

TomTom Plus Services The TomTom GO 720 is compatible with TomTom Plus services that allow you to check the current weather and road conditions on your route, and get up to five-day forecasts for places your visiting. This feature also allows you to take advantage of buddies functionality, TomTom Plus traffic, and the easy download of additional voices. What's more, as a new addition to the TomTom line-up, the 720 comes with TomTom MapShare technology. TomTom Map Share technology not only lets you add to, update, and personalize your maps instantly, but also share them with others so all your family and friends know the latest changes in your area. You can also download others' changes daily as one of many online services.

TomTom's GO 720 comes complete with TomTom Home software, an internal high-quality rechargeable lithium ion battery, and the capability to share content directly between other compatible TomTom GO devices. A Bluetooth remote control is available as a separate accessory. The 720 is also backed by a manufacturer's limited warranty.

What's in the Box TomTom GO 720 navigation device, windshield mount, desk dock with USB cable, car charger, CD-rom with software and user's manual, quick-start guide, accessory/PLUS leaflet, TomTom safe driving leaflet, and warranty information.

Have owned this model for about a month now. Started with a Refurb, then eventually returned it and got a new one. The problem with the Refurb is, it comes with maps that are a year old, and refurbs don't include the New Map guarantee. Ordinarily, this wouldn't be a problem, BUT. There is a HUGE difference with what is on the refurbs and what is on a new updated one. One of the selling points of the Go 630 is Advanced lane guidance. A feature that more clearly shows you what lane you should be in. I found, through experience that the older maps have only a SMALL fraction of roads that support this, while the update adds MANY MANY more. With the old maps, it only came up ONCE in my travels, now it comes up in many more. This GREATLY enhances the usefulness of the device.
Other considerations: If you are buying this unit for the Bluetooth, look elsewhere. It is simply NOT reliable, and TomTom CS is useless. When it DOES connect to my phone, it repeated and randomly announces it is connected throughout your drive, and then, also randomly, it just sometimes decides that it is not going to connect. You get in your car, ready to drive, and boom, it just does not connect. Doesn't even try. Just says "can not connect to your phone" A call to CS, and they tell you that your phone isn't on their list, which is Baloney. That only means they haven't taken the time to test it. They have only a small handfull of tested phones. This allows them to get away with saying it's YOUR fault. I have found that I can restore BT functionality by re-syncing it to the Home software, but of course, this doesn't help you when you are sitting in your car ready to go somewhere and it decided not to work, or if you are away from home. Just pathetic. Bluetooth is pretty standard, there is NO excuse for it to be this flakey, and it's not on my Garmin.
The on-screen buttons on this unit are ridiculously small. In fact, dangerously so. Try and hit the correct one while driving and forget it. What's amazing is, this screen is bigger than my Garmin, yet the Garmin has easier to use buttons. TTS? hahahahaha. It is ATROCIOUS. Most streets are pronounced wrong, not even CLOSE. I will say the "IQ" routing is somewhat good. It has found some interesting routes I wouldn't have thought of that have been efficient. But, as with all GPS's, this is not consistant. Some routing is not so good. I have also found that sometimes when it gets a particular route in it's mind, it locks onto it, even when you have gone a completely different way. It keeps trying to take you back to its original intention, which can include and even LONGER route. You should also note that the display washes out in daylight, and this is made worse if you use the dash mount. The mounting arm is FAR to short to make sense, and it makes the unit angle upwards, into the light. I find it hard to beleive that this flaw wasn't obvious to the designers. A longer arm is all it would take. Duh! As for the resto of the display. Colors seem to change randomly, most of the info is in letters and numbers that are difficult to see without a magnifying glass, and the mapping is a bit cartoonish. Also missing is a warning tone before turns.
In summary, there are some nice features this unit has that other brands don't, like the Map Share and IQ routes, but also a lot of flaws. If you buy it, go for a new one, not a refurb, and if BT isn't a major need, go for the cheaper 340

TomTom XL 330S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

I bought this unit refurbished as indicated. I was worried about the possibility of it not coming with the most recent map updates (see the reviews for the TomTom ONE XL-S refurbished unit), but I went ahead and bought it anyway since I was being frugal. The GPS came packaged nicely and did not have any blemishes or anything on it. I used it for the first time on a several day trip to Phoenix, where I really got to experience the functionality of the device.
Some good points:
-- the 4.3" screen is nice, and I would recommend this screen size over the 3.5" models.
-- the set-up is relatively easy (which was great since the instruction manual is a joke!).
-- TomTom has a pretty cool website (TomTom HOME) for you to use to get necessary updates your GPS, download accessories, etc. Some bad points"
-- the instruction manual is a joke. Thankfully, I had a vague sense of what to do because I'd used a GPS once before.
-- the car adapter plugs in to the bottom of the unit in a way that is a bit unwieldy and awkward.
-- you can only get the street names spoken with the computer-generated voice. If you chose any of the more human-sounding voices, the street name function will not work.
-- whenever you download a new map or map update, you lose your saved favorites. You have to manually re-enter them or save the file from before you updated.
-- it took forever for me to figure out how to cancel a destination once I was already en-route. Since there is no help in the instruction manual, I just had to start pressing areas of the screen to get the device to take me to the right menu screen!
-- AND VERY IMPORTANTLY: The unit I received came with a map that was 4 quarters (i.e., one year) old. This was a risk based on some other reviews, even though the product description said the device comes with the most updated map or comes with the latest map guarantee. So, I read up on the other TomTom refurb units that Amazon sells, and people were saying that it was relatively easy to get TomTom to give you an updated map. So, I called the customer service line and talked to a rep. He said that I needed the map guarantee certificate that came in the box, but I did not receive one. (FYI: some reviewers of the refurbished TomTom ONE XL-S unit said they got this in the box along with their GPS). Since I didn't have a certificate, the rep said it was unlikely I would get a new map. However, I was determined to get my update, so I pressed a bit further. The rep said maybe I could just send in my proof of purchase (Amazon receipt) and we'll see what happens. (You can fax it or send it as an attachment through a website.) I did that, and lo and behold, I got an email message the NEXT DAY saying that my map update had been uploaded to my TomTom HOME account. I downloaded it the next day without any problems. So, despite the reluctance of the customer service rep, I got my new map!
Overall, the unit works well, though the spoken street names can be bit hard to understand at times. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could.

Important Product Information This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like-new conditions. Some refurbished GPS devices might contain cosmetic blemishes. There is a six-month guarantee on parts and labor on TomTom refurbished products.

QuickGPSfix
Starting up can seem like a slow business, particularly if you're in a hurry, because the GPS receiver needs to know exactly where each GPS satellite is to calculate your location. But satellites only broadcast their positions once every 30 seconds. So if any of their signals are interrupted--for example, by passing high buildings--the whole position-fixing process has to repeat itself again and again until the perfect fix is achieved. QuickGPSfix takes a smarter approach.

QuickGPSfix can speed up the time it takes to fix your GPS position by downloading the latest satellite data via an Internet connection. Just connect your TomTom device to your computer, and TomTom HOME automatically downloads "QuickGPSfix"--a special GPS data file that helps your TomTom fix your position quicker, even when the GPS signal is weak or partially blocked.

This unique, free service--which comes as standard with the GO (920/720/520/910/710/510) and ONE (XL/New Edition)--helps you fix your position and get navigating faster than ever.

On the road or no access to TomTom HOME? Get the same "QuickGPSfix" data by simply connecting to any TomTom PLUS service, using a wireless data connection (GO 920/720/520/910/710/510 and ONE XL/3RD EDITION and 2nd Edition). As soon as a connection is established, the "QuickGPSfix" data is automatically updated.

Note: QuickGPSfix data has limited validity. So to keep on getting a faster position-fix, re-connect your device at least once a week.

To minimize the amount of data sent over your wireless data connection, this automatic update is only carried out if the data on your device is over 5 days old. The associated data usage of this service is less than 10 Kb per connection. Please contact your mobile service provider to determine the exact costs. To disable this automatic update, just select \'Disable Auto QuickGPSfix' on your TomTom device.
