Tom Tom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver Review

Tom Tom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this antenna for a couple of weeks now, and it only retrieved traffic info for two days. Since then, it connects to either of two radio stations in Atlanta and reports "no delays on route", even when I'm stuck in a two-hour traffic jam on I-285. Switching stations results in the "green dot" on the traffic monitor, and a further result of "no delays on route".
Several calls to TomTom tech support have been fruitless. The last time, they claimed their traffic server was down indefinitely. That would be bad enough, but the RDS-TMC information is not controlled by TomTom's service, it comes from Clear Channel's Traffic Network. The traffic server is only for their GPRS/Mobile Phone/TomTom Plus traffic service.
I had tried the TomTom Plus service prior to ordering the antenna, and it worked fairly well (when the traffic server was up) but I found the $19.95/month charge that T-Mobile added on to my bill to be a bit excessive when this antenna was supposed to do a comparable job.
I'm sending it back. If it was just an intermittent outage, I could understand that. Two solid weeks of "no traffic on route" while sitting in the I-285 parking lot for thirty-seven miles each way is ridiculous.

The TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver works by using TMC (Traffic Message Channel) technology. The receiver acquires information through an FM radio signal broadcast by regional providers. By simply connecting the new TomTom GO device to the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver, users will automatically receive traffic information via the TMC connection. Once a trip is planned, traffic alerts are clearly displayed in the traffic bar on the right hand side of the screen. When users tap the traffic bar, they receive further information, such as accident or traffic jam delays. The RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is compatible with the new TomTom GO 920 range, TomTom GO 720, TomTom ONE XL and TomTom ONE 3rd EDITION and provides seamless integration of RDS-TMC Traffic information with the user interface of the TomTom GO and ONE product ranges.

TomTom Alternative Mount for All TomTom GPS Except Go 740 Review

I needed this because I have to dash-mount in my home state. It works, but the goose-neck is not going to hold it steadily like the basic mount you're used to -- It bounces quite a bit when driving about. Also, the goose-neck portion could have stood to be just a bit shorter. (I do like the mega-suction cup with the lever -- Holds very well compared to just a plain rubber suction cup.)

TomTom Alternative Mount Kit (9M00.003) Review

TomTom Alternative Mount Kit (9M00.003)
Average Reviews:

The design of this mount leaves quite a bit to be desired.
The arm is not stiff enough, so the Tom Tom bounces quite a bit when driving on even relatively smooth roads.
The screws that hold the mounting plate to the arm are very small Torx screws and constantly work themselves loose. I will need to purchas a set of small Torx bits just to keep tightening these screws.
The suction cup mounting plate has a bit of 'slack' in the tension of the small rod that connects the cam to the suction cup. This also adds to the Tom Tom bouncing while driving.
Overall, I'm not very happy with the product.

Navigon 4.3-Inch Protective Hard-Shell Case Review

Navigon 4.3-Inch Protective Hard-Shell Case
Average Reviews:

The zipper inside is exposed and scratches the 7100. I've had my 7100 for about two months and not a mark on it without the case. In sad irony one week with the case and it is all scratched up from the case! (reviewers of the 5100 case have noted the same glaring problem)
Before I got the "official" case I checked several nintendo DS (not DS lite) cases at CC. They fit well and I don't think they will scratch up the 7100 like this one does.
Also not the description says this is a hard case. It is semi hard while it will protect the screen within the glove box, it looks like it will do little to protect against even a one foot fall to street.
On the ergonomics, it is clumsy to remove as it doesn't open all the way like Nuvi official or third party cases.

TomTom Travel Case for TomTom Portable Vehicle GPS Devices Review

TomTom Travel Case for TomTom Portable Vehicle GPS Devices
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My girlfriend and I just purchased a new PND, and thought it would be a good idea to get some kinda of case for it. We considered a few options: (1) use one of the existing cases/pouches we already have, (2) get a small/non-bulky case so we could toss it in a purse/backpack, (3) get a larger case to stuff all the related accessories into a single container.
Since we already have a variety of small cases/pouches, we opted for #3: the larger case. We ordered the TT Travel Case thinking that all the parts and pieces would fit nicely in the case.
Being the gadget geek that I am, I patiently waited the 9 days it took to get to us; diligently checking my Amazon "Where's my Stuff" page, and following the box via the shipping number.
Being that TT recommends this case for the device we ordered (tt330s), I thought it would be more of a 'custom fit'. It's not. It's basically a medium sized (about twice the size of a portable cd player) 'harder-sided' case w/ the TT logo on it.
Here's what I really didn't like about the case:
1. It's not a custom fit for the TT device
2. For as big as it is, there's not enough space for the TT, charger/cable, and mount -- let alone the manuals and stuff.
3. The case is too large to conveniently 'take with you' when you park the car.
For the price (~$30) I'd recommend (1) re-purposing a pouch/bag you already have; or (2) wait til you have your PND and all the accessories you want to pack in front of you, and then go get a generic case/pouch/bag from Target or Walmart ;)

ARKON TTGO123 TomTom GO x20 Cup Holder Mount Review

ARKON TTGO123 TomTom GO x20 Cup Holder Mount
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a TomTom GO 930 (yes, this unit is for the 930 too). Its windshield mount is nice but has two drawbacks:
1) If you place the TomTom high on the windshield, there's a power cord hanging down that's unsightly and can get caught on a moving hand, ripping the TomTom off the windshield;
2) After many hours, the windshield mount lets go, dropping your TomTom hard on the floor; if you're alone, you have to pull over to retrieve it.
I bought this mount for a trip to Italy, wanting to avoid the falls and being uncertain of Italian law regarding windshield obstructions. I was satisfied with the construction:
1) The base has two stout rubber-coated "wedges", one of which is moved by a thumbwheel. The range of movement is large and the base grips the cupholder very well (in fact, I worry that over-tightening could break off the adjustable side of my cup holder). On the downside, the wedges are about half the depth of the cupholders in our Dodge Caravan and the BMW van we rented in Italy; the base can be rocked if bumped. Deeper wedges would be an improvement.
2) The mast is detachable and makes a nice handle if you need a better look at the TomTom. I'm not sure it's supposed to be used that way though; the press fit may eventually become loose. The mast is a good height (the TomTom will sit about 6" above the top of the cupholder), but whether that's right for you really depends on where your cupholder is. On the downside, the mast is keyed; to turn the display right or left, you have to loosen, turn, and re-tighten the base (not good while driving). It also means you may not be able to turn the base so that it doesn't push against the fragile side of an adjustable cupholder.
3) The mount at the top of the mast tilts from 0 to 90 degrees - all you'll need. A stout thumbscrew keeps the tilt from slipping, but my stubby, thick fingers would prefer a slightly larger thumbscrew. It would be nice if the mount could rotate left and right, atop the mast.
4) Though it's hard to tell from the product photo, the mount engages the GO 930 correctly. I find the TomTom's mount design to be a little odd - I'm always a little unsure that it's on right - but the mount on this unit fits it securely (no slop).
The unit is more useful in my Caravan, where the cupholder is part of the dash. In the BMW, the cupholder was in the console between the front seats, so I had to take my eyes further off the road to see it. Though the TomTom speaks navigation instructions, I do look at it for time, ETA, and to see if I'm speeding (since Italian speeding tickets are sent to the rental car company, who pay them with your credit card).
One last point: the unit does not match the picture: the mast is straight (tapered) and much thicker. The instructions clearly identify the product as Arkon's TTGO123, and give the correct picture.

I used this all summer without a problem but as soon as the weather cooled I would find it on the floor mat in the morning. Worse than that, it fell off the windshield 3 times while the unit was attached. Read up on this and you will find a number of owners fighting with TomTom over broken LCD screens only to find out THEY are at fault (according to Tom TOM CS reps) for the damage done by TomTOM's piece of junk window mount. I purchased an after-market unit on eBay for $12 and I could hang my 5 yr old off that thing without it coming off (even in weather below freezing). DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND SKIP THIS ENTIRELY. Heck I'll give you mine if you want it

TomTom Carrying Case and Strap for the GO 720 and 730 GPS Review

TomTom Carrying Case and Strap for the GO 720 and 730 GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here's the case that is a MUST if you have the TomTom 720. It fits (as the saying goes "like a glove." The sides zipper, and the inside is orange with the inside sides having an elastic on them so that the case does not "flop" open all the way when unzipped. There is a lanyard included that can be put on the one end so enable the case to be carried on your wrist or such.
The case is hard, but not the what I'd call reinforced so that you could expect the case to hold up to several pounds of pressure on it. But it's good to protect against bumps and such, and is better than a soft case.
If you're going to spend the money for a portable GPS, then you need this protective case.
My only negative is that these necessary extras should be included as some other brands do (but with cost this is becoming less). The only other thing I'd advise would be is to purchase a pack of screen protectors (they usually come in a pack of 4 or 5 but you only need to use one then save the rest) and apply it to the screen to protect against finger grease and scratches.

Before buying this product I was concerned my original clip was different than this one so I thought it would not work. It worked perfectly, and it seems much better than my old one. If I had this one at the first time it would not have broken. That's probably why Tomtom changed the model.

TomTom Leather GPS Carrying Case for 720, 730, 920 Review

TomTom Leather GPS Carrying Case for 720, 730, 920
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The TomTom 720 doesn't come with a case, but you should probably get one if you don't want to get it all scratched up taking it in and out of your car. After doing some research, the one xl was the best looking case I could find online. My cost was $44, which included tax and shipping. When it arrived, I wasn't disappointed: the one xl is made of a sturdy yet soft leather, fits the 720 like a glove, and has nice looking reverse stitching (for those in to aesthetics). The only complaint I have is that for the life of me, I can't figure out where to attach the wrist strap. There is no hole or hook on either the case or the 720 unit that I can find, and there are no instructions included with the unit. I'm either missing something totally obvious or this is a fairly substantial design flaw. Either way, it should be a lot easier to figure out (it's a wrist strap for crying out loud) so I docked the case a full star in my review.

TomTom Remote Control for GO 500, 700 (9D00.015) Review

TomTom Remote Control for GO 500, 700 (9D00.015)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This remote control allows you to access the different options and menus with your TomTom GO 500/700 all without touching the screen. This is achieved by the use of a radio frequency and therefore it does not require a 'line of sight' with your GPS unit. The remote also allows you to easily adjust the volume of the audio instructions by the use of the top two -/+ buttons. In the center it has a radial dail that has up/down and left/right cursor functions as well as a large enter/select button in the center. There are two more buttons below this radial dail that I'm unclear as to their funtions, I believe they may also adjust the volume, but that seems to be redundant. There is one more button located bottom-center that I assumed to be an on/off button but it (nor any other button) did not serve in that capacity, if anything it appeared to be another enter/select button....again redundant. I've only had this device a couple of days and perhaps those buttons do serve as shortcuts to certain funtions, but with TomTom not providing any instructions other than how to insert the batteries along with descriptions merely touting its convenience, I'm left to tinkering with it myself to discover if any other funtions do indeed exist. There is also a protective holder included with the remote, that if you wish you can utilize the adheasive backing on it to mount it to any easily accessible place in your vehicle. I chose not to permanantly mount my remote's holder as I use my TomTom Go 700 in different vehicles, but that's a personal preference, who knows maybe these holders are, or will be available to purchase separately to mount in multiple vehicles.

ARKON TTGO112 TomTom GO x20 Weighted Friction Mount Review

ARKON TTGO112 TomTom GO x20 Weighted Friction Mount
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this product because the suction mount always falls off when I am driving, as a lot of TomTom owners also encounter. This product is well designed & sturdy. The friction pad is heavy enough that it can sit on my dash board w/o the safety hook. It provides enough friction. The pad wont slide even when I make a quick turn. The mount stays on the pad very well. I have used it a few times and it doesnt seem like it comes off easily.
But I think there are a few places they can improve the mount. First, the mount lets u to pan up & down, left & right but u cant tilt it. This is a big inconvinence when u drive under the sun, and the sun glares on the GPS. its very hard to see it sometimes. The only solution is to pan down the arm but then the GPS will literally sitting on the dash. I have a 920T n it comes w/ a traffic antenna. so its hard to let the GPS sit this low.
Also, the suction lock is on the front which means everytime when u take the mount out u will need to loose the arm, move it upward and then unlock the suction. Its very inconvinence. I had a Mio before and it came w/ a mount similar to this but it lock from the back. The advantage is u dont have to adjust angle every time u use the mount. It provides u a quick hook up. Also. my car has limited space between the dash board n the windshield. every time when I tay to loose the arm adn move it up, it will hit the windshield. I hope they will improve their next design. Or come out a groose neck mount for 920.

I have tried a Garmin 680 and a Tom Tom Go 720. You can argue back/forth about the gps abilities of the two brands, but there is one BIG negative that the Garmin has vs. Tom Tom. The Garmin navigation screen is pretty, but information poor. No distance to objective. No speed. No miles travelled. No street names as you pass them. And no option to see any of that except by slecting a different screen. Tom Tom lets you see all of that on the navigation screen. If you never had it, you may not miss it. Once you have had it, if you buy a Garmin, you will regret doing it.

TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really love the 720. I have tried the Garmin Nuvi and just didn't like the software nearly as much as the TomTom. Entering addresses is really fast and you only see towns in the state you are looking in. This means no more having to scroll through 30 different Springfields to get to the one you are searching for. You can hide the keyboard to see a long list of close matches so instead of having to type out the full city or street name you can just hit the first few letters and then pick from a list.
Mapshare seems like it will be a huge advance in the world of automotive GPS devices. Is a street marked as open when it should be blocked? Just correct the error with a few quick taps on the screen and it's fixed. What's really the big advance though is the ability to share my corrections with all other TomTom owners. I connect the 720 to the TomTom HOME software and it downloads corrections that other users have submitted.
What you see on the screen can be fully customized so that if you want the status bar on the side then you can put it there or you can leave it on the bottom. You can also decide what information is shown in the status bar. You can show or hide the time of day, remaining time, remaining distance, current heading, and your current rate of speed. If you subtract items from the status bar the other items automatically get bigger to take up the remaining space. You can also select if you want to show the current street you are on and the name of the next street you will be turning on to.
Text to speech quality is very good and will say the directions so for example it might say "in 250 feet keep right, then take the exit right, 204B towards Westview." Or "in 200 meters, turn right South West Madison Avenue." You can choose from multiple voices although I think the Dave voice sounds the best of the bunch. If you don't want to hear the "keep to lane" instructions you can disable this feature although I personally like to have it on. You can also record your own spoken instructions so for example you could have your kid's voice tell you to turn left in 200 feet. I haven't tried this though.
The screen is very bright and easy to see even when I have my sunglasses on. The 720 can be set to automatically turn the brightness down as it gets dark thanks to a built in light sensor on the front of the unit.
The mount is pretty clever and super easy to use. Just push it up to the windshield and it sticks right on. The 720 then just slides right on and is held solidly in place. You can turn the 720 in any direction to get it exactly where it's easiest for you to see.
With all the great features of the 720, I think what will really set it apart even more from the other GPS units out there is the Mapshare feature. Being able to fix your own map and download updates automatically to keep the map up to date is one of those things that is so fantastically great that you wonder why on earth it took so long to make to a shipping product. Whether or not it can live up to the expectations remains to be seen. Even if you took Mapshare away it's still the best car GPS I've ever used. With it, there's just no contest.
My biggest complaint is that there's no case in the box. You need to buy one separately although I've been using the plastic holder it shipped in so far which is OK.

Taking navigation beyond just convenience, the 720 lets you play your music wirelessly over your vehicle's stereo system via its built-in MP3 player and FM transmitter. Now you can enjoy your music on the 720, all while seamlessly providing navigation instructions and still handling your hands-free phone calls. My husband and I absolutely love this Gilsson portable mount !!! We own a Garmin Nuvi 350, Magellan Maestro and a TomTom One and this mount works well with all of them, even with our aggressive driving style in a Lotus Elise sports car ! We have tried both the Garmin Friction Mount as well as the Bracketron Nav-Mat beanbag mounts and found this Gilsson mount to be most stable for several reasons: (1) This Gilsson Mount is heavier than Nav-Mat and Garmin Mounts, (2) Gilsson Mount is square-shape, allowing one to point the corners of the mount toward the windshield and the driver, thereby creating a longer "moment arm", effectively making the mount to be more stable and less likely to tilt or fall off the dashboard (3) The non-skid material surface area on the Gilsson mount is larger than Garmin and Nav-Mat mounts, thereby making it even more resistant to skidding and sliding. One of our friends has a Toyota Prius with slanted dashboard and have had no problems with this Gilsson mount staying at the same spot. This mount is made of high quality and durable neoprene / wet-suit material, I am sure you will be very happy with it !

This Gilsson portable beanbag mount is a great base mount for your GPS, MP3 Player, smart phone, or most any portable electronic device. Weighing about two pounds, it's just heavy enough to make sure your electronic device stays put, even with sudden or abrupt maneuvering. It's an ideal choice for drivers in states where the use of windshield suction cup mounts is illegal, and for those who prefer a mount that can quickly be moved out of the way. It won't leave any ugly adhesive residues on your dashboard, and allows you to hide the GPS from thieves when exiting your vehicle.

Note: this beanbag mount requires the use of a fixed marine, dashboard or suction cup pedestal, which is secured to the the detachable plate on the beanbag mount base.
Works like a charm with Garmin, Magellan, Mio, TomTom, Mio, Lowrance, Motorola, Apple iPod, iPhone, Blackberry, Cell Phone, MP3 or other portable electronics devices.
