TomTom GO 930 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom GO 930 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

(More customer reviews)
I've owned Garmin's for more than 5 years and I currently own a NUVI 760. I've heard the great news about the TOMTOM 930 with IQROUTES, lane guidance, and the HOME feature so I decided to buy the 930 so I can give it a spin and compare it to the NUVI 760 with MSN DIRECT.
TOMTOM Pluses:
Arrival time -
The arrival time with IQROUTES are MORE accurate than Garmin's. The NUVI keeps updating the arrival time during the trip. I compared the arrival time from the start and the TOMTOM was more accurate. TOMTOM is constantly collecting the travel times and updating their database. When you sign in to the HOME program the IQroutes from your trips are uploaded to the TOMTOM server.
Routes:
If anyone writes a review about a GPS and states that routes are 100% accurate then they are lieing, I have not found the perfect GPS with perfect routes.
The routes on both the 930 and the NUVI 760 have been identical. With the 930 I see minutes left on the trip, time left, and arrival time. I can even tell the 930 what time I would like to arrive at my destination.I can AVOID any of the roads on my trip. You CANNOT avoid roads on the NUVI 760.
TRAFFIC:
I'm using traffic on the 930 through my ATT Tilt phone and it seems to work and it is accurate. It uses my Tilt to access the traffic on the TOMTOM server through the Internet. If you have cell coverage you should have traffic data.
MSN Traffic on the 760 is not accurate and the avoidance feature does not work that well. The bad thing about the MSN Direct feature is that it does not have good range. I live in Chicago and the service does not work in many of the outlying suburbs.
PLUSES:
Iqroutes are more accurate than the NUVI.
Lane guidance works in my area.
Avoiding roads on your trip.
Being able to correct street names, closed streets, one ways, and many other errors is a big plus.
Traffic works well.
The GPS chip has not lost reception. I've lost the signal numerous times on the NUVI.
More information on the 930 screen than on the 760.
TOMTOM minuses:
The screen is hard to see in sunlight.
The maps are not bad since I loaded the Garmin map look on the 930. I even have the magenta route line on my 930.
The battery does not last more than 1 hour.
The Text to speech does not work all the time. The street names are not pronounced as good as the NUVI.
You don't get the constant reminders that the NUVI 760 provides. Sometimes I don't think that I drive the 930 with my eyes close. With the 760 you can close your eyes and not miss a turn.
I cannot locate an address by ANY city like the NUVI. Sometimes the 930 cannot locate an address if it thinks it's in a different city. You have to input the surrounding city names to get the correct address and route.

TomTom GO 930 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

Bought the GPS on Jan 14th 09. I did realize that I would get a unit that was repacked, maybe even used but fully functional. That I only get 6 months guarantee is mentioned in the description.
What I did NOT know at this point - and what is certainly not mentioned in the description - is the fact that TomTom does not give Latest Map Guarantee (LMG) on refurbished units! The LMG is a nice feature that (AFAIK) goes with every unit and gives you the opportunity to update the installed maps for free in the 30 days after purchase.
That means that you get the newest map for free in case right after your purchase a new map is released by TomTom, which is normally the case every 3 months.
This you do NOT get with the refurbished units. OK, I would accept that when the maps that I got with the unit would be fairly new. What I got are maps from spring 2008! And after talking to TomTom Support I realized that it is a game of luck what versions may come with the device, depending alone on the time when the unit was refurbished.
The feature I was looking forward to was Active Lane Guidance(ALG). I'm driving up and down I-95 and I have not yet seen a single ALG image! So the map version is pretty useless to me. The coverage with ALG surely gets better with every map version, ergo: by new maps.
The new maps will cost you at the moment 110$ for North America and another 160$ for Central and Western Europe.
Unit cost me 289 add both maps and you are at 559$.
New units sell currently for around 400$.
Think about it. Does that make sense?
BTW: Calling TomTom Support didn't change a thing: "...yes, no, very sorry, but no, no LMG on refurbished units..."

TomTom GO 930 REFURB 4.3 Inch GPS Navigator. If you're looking for the ultimate portable GPS navigator, you've got to consider the 930 series. TomTom's 2008 flagship models bring all of their technological advancements together with ease of use and a sleek design to present a severely cool device. For a couple of year's now, TomTom's been driving forward community-driven navigation features. They began by introducing with Map Share, which lets you instantly modify street names, street direction, and custom locations called points of interest (POIs) on your own device, then upload them to TomTom's HOME network and download changes made by all of the other users. When you do this, TomTom gets to find out what routes your device has been taking. The data is anonymous, but it's given TomTom an enormous pile of route and speed data, which they've used to tie community data to routing with their new IQ Routes feature, which calculates routes using the actual recorded average speeds of travel to calculate your trip rather than posted speed limits, giving you an extremely accurate prediction of how long any given route will actually take at any given time. There are a host of other interesting features, and you can read about them here. Refurbished.

Before buying this product I was concerned my original clip was different than this one so I thought it would not work. It worked perfectly, and it seems much better than my old one. If I had this one at the first time it would not have broken. That's probably why Tomtom changed the model.
I'm very happy with this product.

TomTom GO 740 Live 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable Live Internet Connected GPS Navigator Review

I have used multiple generations of the TomTom, and I have been a fan for a while. TomTom has always had the best user interface, but the rubber meets the road on directions and map accuracy, and here the new GO 740 Live shows solid improvement.
I drive in the Washington DC area, and occassionally commute up I-95 to New York and Long Island. In other words, it's traffic, traffic everywhere.
I depend on the TomTom GO 740 Live. The traffic updates are frequent, and almost always match what I am seeing in the real world. And IQ Routes are clearly having a positive impact on route selection. IQ Routes is the feature than anonymously gathers actual driving experiences from all TomTom users and then factors that history into its route computation. I suppose it works best in metro areas where there are many users.
Why this matters: Anyone who drives north out of DC knows that 16th Street is much, much better than Georgia Ave. They both appear as normal city streets, and though Georgia appears more direct, it has more untimed lights and more local traffic. Before IQ Routes, TomTom would suggest Georgia, and I would ignore it. Now, TomTom suggests 16th. With IQ Routes, TomTom is gathering the experience that only local drivers have.
After second-guessing TomTom for a few months, and usually being wrong, I now let it automatically route around traffic. Between the traffic reports and the IQ routes, I am getting the right routes and very accurate estimates of arrival times.
My previous TomTom was the 930, which reached its traffic service through a bluetooth connection to my phone. The connection was flaky (I blame Verizon, not TomTom.) and did not work if I was on a call. The new LIVE series has it's own cell circuitry built in. I stopped paying $15/month to Verizon for "broadband access connect", and I will gladly pay $10/month to TomTom for the LIVE services, which include traffic, fuel prices, speed cameras, Google searches, etc.
Final note: In addition to the LIVE services, I subscribe to TomTom's map update service, and I dock the unit to my PC often to download map corrections. I depend on my GPS, so these update services are a positive feature for me, and my review assumes use of all these services.

TomTom XXL 540S 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator World Traveler Edition Review

TomTom XXL 540S 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator World Traveler Edition

This is my second TomTom product. I have TomTom on my Palm TX and have just sold a Garmin Nuvi 780. For those TomTom users, the interface will be very much the same. Display- excellent at 5 inches and very bright. Almost all the info you could ask for is there on the bottom bar. Your speed starts blinking when more than 3 mph over the limit. Easy to touch the screen and change the volume without changing screens. Excellent. Sound is pretty clear, much better than my Nuvi 780. It works well out of the box but for some features, you will have to go online to read the user's manual at the TomTom site. Touch screen works well, not too much pressure but also not too sensitive. Guidance is also excellent, especially driving an RV in heavy traffic on the freeway. Gives a 2 mile notice before the next turn so a big rig has plenty of time to move to the correct lane. My Garmin only gave the next turn 7/10 of a mile ahead. No big deal in a car but enough to be a little stressful if no one in the passenger's seat to help. Next turn is indicated with a large arrow with the distance also displayed. The 3D freeway interchange maps work well and make it hard to make a wrong turn. The 740S plugs into a Mac or PC and works well to download the latest info, voices, etc. Navigation is good and is the only GPS I have found to get me home making all the turns that I normally take. The Garmin display is a little prettier with excellent street resolution but the XXL 740S's street maps are quicker to read and you don't have to take your eyes off the road for as long in my opinion.
Cons: GPS is moderately difficult to take on and off the mount. It is not a hot mount so the power cord must be plugged/unplugged each time. Garmin's mount is much better with a positive, easy action and is powered so removing and replacing is far quicker. On the other side, the single, small cord on the TomTom is not very obtrusive while the bundled cord on the Garmin is very visible.
Almost but not everything costs when you go to the TomTom site to get the latest maps, etc. When your GPS arrives, you have to download the current map within 30 days or pay for it. I learned the hard way. I installed the latest firmware but did not get the latest map. Garmin's support is a bit friendlier than TomTom's. The fellow I spoke with was not rude but could have been a bit warmer. All GPSs are heavily discounted today and it may pay to just update the unit every couple of years rather than paying almost the same for new maps.
Bottom line is if you are a BMW, MBZ or Porsche type, you will love it. It just has so much info right on the screen and you can go online to download road changes other users have found...for free. On the other hand, if you drive a four door with idiot lights, another brand may be your cup of tea.
Mexico and Europe maps make it just about impossible to beat for the world tourist/traveler in a rental car.
Wishes: altitude on the screen and degrees to go with the compass.
Rating: 4.8 out of 5. Excellent. Love it!
