It's not so bad that I'll send it back, but I wouldn't buy another one. There were three items in this package, so I'll discuss them separately:
First, the charger. It won't work in all vehicles. I discovered that there is a slight difference in the shape of a true cigarette lighter socket and the 12 volt round sockets most cars come with now. This charger works in the cigarette lighter of my GM pickup truck but not the 12 volt socket on the same vehicle. It won't work in either of the 12 volt power outlets in my Subaru. In constrast, the orginal charger for my GPS, the charger for my cell phone, and the charger for my mp3 player all work in the Subaru. The cord is shorter than the original cord which came with my device. Also, the cord plugs straight in instead of coming out at a right angle, as the original device cord did. The straight plug means I'd have to mount the suction cup an inch or so higher on the windshield. That, combined with the shorter cord, means that the cord was stretched across the controls to my in-dash CD player. Very annoying.
Next, the windshield mount. It's ok, but I don't love it. The clip attaching the gooseneck to the GPS kind of works with my Tomtom Go 630, but it's a Mickey Mouse arrangement of one not quite right adapter slid into another not quite right adapter. The swivel joint attaching the adapter to the gooseneck tightens and loosens with a screw. The plus side of this is that the joint isn't going to move once you tighten it down. The minus is that you can't adjust it one handed. The joint also doesn't have quite the amount of flexibility I'd like. The suction cup holding the gooseneck to the window awesome. It attaches with a flip lever- easy to attach and very secure. The gooseneck wasn't all that great. It's very stiff, which makes it hard to position. The joint attaching the gooseneck to the suction cup is easily strained, and the device will vibrate forever after once you've loosened it up.
Finally, the Micro SD reader. I haven't had cause to use it yet, so I've no idea if it actually works. The whole thing is barely larger than someone's thumbnail; It looks like someone chopped the end off a standard USB cable and turned it into a keychain.

Com paired to the Tom Tom the graphics are better. Set up is easy to and the arm that extends from the window is easy to see and dosent get in the way. The problem I have with it is when you try to find different stores or places. THis is the only thing that the Tom Tom is better. Not that it was much better though. I tried finding Whole Foods and 24 hr fitness and either does not give me good directions or cant find it. Updating is also a problem. I cannot figure out how to use it. The TOm TOm was much easier and updated automatically. Also you can change the audio alot better wit a wide selections with the TOm TOm..its not that its a bad GPS its just I expected alot more then what I got

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all the good news. The display and automatic panning on the Tom Tom 910 are second to none. It is MUCH more visible than the Garmin Nuvi 350 and the automatic panning works much better. The actual mapping algorithms seemed to be approximately the same in both units neither, insofar as I was able to determine, having much of an advantage over the other. Mapping details on both units are excellent. Bright light visibility is outstanding - much better than the Nuvi.
The unit, compared to the Nuvi 350 and 360 is considerably larger and more cumbersome. Additionally, the mounting solution on the Nuvi is slightly better than that on the 910 - more compact. The voice prompts are loud, clear and timely. The ease of use is just great (with the exception of the POI implementation) and the visibility and quality of the display are great.
The bad news: POI access is cumbersome and poorly implemented. Hopefully a firmware upgrade will fix this problem in the near future. As it stands now, you cannot enter the name of the POI that you wish to go to without going through an intervening category screen made even more cumbersome by the fact that you may guess the category wrong! Then, the POIs only come up in alphabetical order or by distance. For me, this particular deficiency was the deal breaker. Selecting a POI must be as simple as possible in a AIO (all in one) GPS navigation solution. There are so many capabilities that you give up in these simplified AIO solutions that they should perform their designated functions easily and efficiently. The Nuvi does this, the 910 does not. The nuvi allows you to search POIs by name. The TomTom 910 does not.
This device is intended as an extremely simple point to point navigating AIO GPS navigation solution and is not intended to enable the use of way points or easily changing the course selected by the unit. You have essentially two options: the shortest route and the fastest route. Fortunately, the mapping program selects routs that are very acceptable. Personally, I like to look at the overall route and fiddle with it. This unit is not designed for such use. Microsoft Streets and Trips is ideal for this kind of tinkering, but terrible for point to point navigation while on the go.
Make sure and get the most recent firmware updates on the Tom Tom website which will fix the known bugs and further improve the functionality.
I give this unit a 3 star on form (compared to the elegant Nuvi), a 4 star on the functionality for which it was designed, and a 5 star on the beautiful bright display. You will not be disappointed in the beautiful display, the automatic panning, the actual map functionality or the bright light performance. But the POI solution is cumbersome and frustrating.

Magellan RoadMate 860T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan RoadMate 860T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

This is my first navigational system, and after doing research I thought it would best fit my needs. So far it has done the job - the screen is comfortable to view and I love the turn by turn directions. I was looking at other models and find this has a good combination of features. It is very easy to use - would recommend it.
The only reason I am rating it 4 stars is because sometimes seems slow in acquiring my GPS location and when I am in a hurry, I don't have the time to wait.

While you're navigating your way to your next destination, there's no reason you can't entertain yourself along the way. The Magellan RoadMate 860T Multimedia GPS Travel Companion lets you do exactly that. With a built-in MP3 player and photo viewer, along with Magellan's leading GPS navigation system, there's nothing quite like the RoadMate 860T for your next road trip. This unit retains many of the features of the RoadMate 800, but adds something special, called Magellan TrafficKit. With TrafficKit, you can get live traffic incident reports, which helps you improve your navigation decisions and quickly reroutes you around trouble spots.Music and Photos On-the-Go With 10 GB of available internal memory, the RoadMate 860T will make sure you never run out of tunes. The Magellan Music Manager Tools software lets you simply transfer your .MP3 and .WMA files from your computer to the unit, or you have the option of inserting a Secure Digital (SD) or MMC card containing your digital files. Either way, you'll have enough tunes to take you from L.A. to N.Y. and back. The RoadMate 860T lets you easily browse your music, create playlists (for MP3 files only), and adjust the sound to your personal liking with a digital equalizer. The RoadMate 860T's large 3.5-inch color display will also give you the resolution you need to enjoy your favorite digital photos. Simply transfer your files directly into the memory, or plug in your SD or MMC card, and sit back and enjoy.Magellan Navigation Of course, the RoadMate 860T's main purpose is to make sure you get to where you need to go. To get started, simply select a destination and your RoadMate 860T GPS navigation system will take it from there. By matching letters to the available destinations, Magellan's QuickSpell address entry feature makes it easy and quick to enter destination addresses. An internal address book also stores up to 200 personal or business destinations for quick reference.Advanced, state-of-art navigation software automatically calculates the most direct route and recalculates it whenever you take a detour or make additional stops. Routing options enable you to choose the best route for you, whether you want the shortest time or shortest distance, or whether you want to stay on or off the freeway. The RoadMate 860T lets you customize every trip exactly as you want. A unique SmartDetour feature will even automatically route around stopped freeway traffic.Built-in detailed street maps and over six million pre-loaded points of interest make it easy to find the nearest restaurant, gas station, ATM, airport and more. A simple touch-screen menu lets you easily choose a location by category or sub-category. So if you want to find the nearest Chinese restaurant, or the nearest movie theater for the kids, just touch the screen. It has never been easier or more fun to get around town or take cross-country trips. With detailed maps of all 50 United States, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Canada, you can travel the continent with no need to download new data. A single seamless database built in to the hard drive contains all major city streets as well as federal, state and county roads and highways. And if traveling abroad is in your plans, this GPS system comes pre-loaded with detailed maps of 27 European countries that can be unlocked for a fee. When you want a clearer view of your route, simply touch the 3D map icon. This will get both a three-dimensional representation, as well as a bird's-eye view, allowing you to clearly see cross streets and helping you to prepare for upcoming turns. If that's not enough, a turn-by-turn voice and visual guidance feature tells you exactly when to make the next turn, and to confirm the voice instructions, the automatic map zooms in to show your turn and switches to TrueView 3D so that you'll be sure not to miss your turn. These automatic functions make the RoadMate 860T one of the most useful navigation aids you'll ever experience.Add the Magellan TrafficKit to receive live traffic incident reports that appear on the dynamic touch screen map. Touch an onscreen icon to view detailed information about the incident. You can also automatically reroute around accidents, slow-downs, road work, severe weather conditions and more. The TrafficKit service will be available in the Summer of 2006 and it will require a subscription.
If you've got a trip with multiple destinations lined up, the RoadMate 860T can optimize your travel plans. Use the Trip Planner feature to enter addresses or select points of interest (POI) before leave. You can choose the order of each destination, or you can let the Multi-destination Route Optimization system calculate the quickest route between each point from your present location. The feature also allows you to add and subtract destinations as you go, and you can save your trip to repeat the same route again. When you're traveling at night, the displayed map on the RoadMate 860T switches to night view at sundown, and back to day view in the morning. This means that you'll always have a clear view of where you're headed. With SmartVolume, the unit's volume automatically increases at speeds over 45 MPH, which means that voice and audio prompts are always at the right level for maximum clarity.Best of all, the RoadMate 860T is easy to install and is completely portable. You can choose from a selection of mounting accessories, and there's no complicated wiring required. You simply plug in the power cord and you're ready to go. A built-in rechargeable battery lets you take the unit where ever you need to go, and when you want to transfer it to another vehicle, you simply unplug it from one car and plug it into another. It's that simple. At a mere 10.8 ounces in weight and 3.15 x 1.55 x 6.26-inches (W x D x L) in dimension, the RoadMate 860T is meant to be taken wherever your travel plans require.

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Basic GPS Features
The TomTom 910 comes preloaded with complete maps of the USA, Canada and Western Europe preinstalled. There is a fee upgrade to the latest current maps, despite their latest map guarantee. You will have the latest map - designed for that unit.
Navigation is simple. Your destination is selected by choosing a favorite, `home' or an address. You don't even have to know the exact address. You can get close to where you are going by choosing a city center, zip code, or intersection as well. If you have an idea where you're going on the map, you can zoom in to the area that you are going and tapping that spot on your screen. Favorites can be saved by knowing the exact address, tapping on the map, or plugging in coordinates.
Points of interest can be directly navigated to, but require that you search in the proximity of a destination already selected. In other words, you can't navigate straight to the San Diego Zoo (unless you know the street address). Rather, you select San Diego as your destination, do a search for zoos near your destination, select San Diego Zoo and then tap Go To.
Once you start saving favorites, you can manage them. The icon to manage your favorites is not in the most intuitive location. It's in the settings menu. I think that a subset menu of favorites would be the most logical location to manage - not the same place where you pick what voice you want to narrate your trip.
Many GPS units only allow the user to select their current location as the starting point of route planning. The 910 will allow me to plan a trip between San Diego and Seattle, even if I'm sitting in North Carolina. The itinerary planning feature allows the user to go from point A to point B via point C instead of going direct.
Navigational preferences allow for fastest route, shortest route, and avoiding toll roads, among others. If your route does include a toll, you can ask to drive around it. The 910 will then compare your original route to the toll route in distance and time. If you don't believe the GPS and want to take your own `short cut', it will allow you to and recalculate your route from your current position. This may not sound like much, but my mother-in-law's built in GPS on her Toyota doesn't feature this and becomes very angry with the driver if you miss an exit. It wants you to go back and pick up where it (incorrectly) wanted you to go in the first place.
One of the first things that I did in the settings menu was to turn on all icons. This is the only way to see the icon that allows you to cancel navigation so that you don't have to power off or smash it once you get to where you are going but want to drive around a bit.
Almost Premium Features
The 910 comes with a few extra goodies that require you to use the Bluetooth feature of your GPS in conjunction with your phone. You can get traffic alerts in select cities, add TomTom buddies, download options and premium features such as fuel prices. Even if the service, like buddies, is free, the GPS will use the data transfer feature of your phone to download the information it wants. If you're on an unlimited data plan with your cell provider, then that's great. No worries. But if you pay per kb, you can incur additional fees on your cell phone bill that you may not expect. As for traffic alerts, the cell phone data fee can be circumvented by using a special "TMC" antenna. This is only $160 and will save you from those pesky data fees. In fact you don't have to have a cell phone at all for traffic alerts with this antenna. Unfortunately, it doesn't download any other data.
TomTom Buddies is a unique feature that lets you pair up with someone else that has a Bluetooth phone and TomTom GPS. It will allow you to text message each other (please don't, if you're the only one in the car!) and will allow you to see where they are on your map.
The Other Stuff
The TomTom 910 has a Bluetooth connectivity option. This allows the user to use their Bluetooth enabled phone for hands-free talking, the aforementioned data downloading, and other audio devices. The hands-free features the ability to pair with a cell phone, but you can't unpair it without either deleting the profile, turning off Bluetooth altogether on either your phone or unit, or by switching to another phone. In other words, it's pretty inconvenient to just get in the car and not use your hands-free if you've already paired your phone to it.
The condenser mic supposedly has echo-cancellation, but was extremely sensitive to ambient noise. Adjusting the volume should help, but attaching the included mic to your visor may be a better choice.
The 910 also has a built in MP3 player. Note that this is ONLY an MP3 player and doesn't support any other music format. TomTom Jukebox is an attempt to organize your music, but it's pretty archaic. The MP3 player also supports audio books and has a function to directly download a book to your machine through either your phone or TomTom Home, the PC based docking application.
The built in speaker volume adjusts itself to ambient noise. Use the Bluetooth to connect to your car stereo for a better sound.
Finally, the 910 supports bmp and jpg photos. You can transfer as many as you can fit on the hard drive.
While you're out driving, you can have a slide show of your favorite photos while your favorite music is being played, and still not miss a turn. The GPS will interrupt your show when an upcoming turn is closing in.
The Hardware
The TomTom 910 is an older unit of about 2004-2005 vintage. This is one of the original TomTom form factors and is much bulkier than it's contemporary models. It's orange-wedge shaped and weighs about ? of a pound.
The 480 x 272, 16-bit screen is 4" across and is very visible. Its anti-glare screen is visible in most light conditions, even direct sunlight. It also has a light sensor to adjust itself to ambient light.
The 910 has a 400 MHz processor, 64 MB RAM and a very unusual 20GB hard drive. With 12 GB available, there is more than plenty of room for thousands of high quality songs and photos. You can easily take the unit from car to car and even carry it with you with it's 4-hour Li-Ion battery.
The 910 is also compatible with most 3rd generation and newer iPods (except the shuffle) with a separate adapter. You can access the menu on your touch screen and play the music through the GPS or through the Bluetooth audio device you have paired with it.
At Home
The TomTom 910 comes with TomTom Home, the PC based dock where you can download certain features with a USB cable connected your online PC.
Shortfalls
Overall, I like this GPS. The icons are large and easy to use, but there are some big problems that are probably very much uniform across the TomTom line that I would definitely be aware of before making a final decision on such a large investment.
Other than the favorites, there is no waypoint database that would be something compatible with Garmin or Magellan units. The unit is strictly for auto travel and unlike similarly priced newer units, is ineffective for hiking or other outdoor activities like geocaching. You can't store a track log, you can't download a list of waypoints that someone wants to share with you.
You also must always install the latest firmware to your GPS unit and have the latest version of TomTom Home if you want to continue using both together. Even if that means the incorporation of a change you don't like. For instance, the latest firmware update included a music icon the size of a nickel on the main navigation page. Though convenient to access your jukebox, it's annoying if you don't listen to music. There is no way to turn it off.
Another feature with regards to hands free calling is that it can import your entire phone database. While this is useful in that you can dial from your contact list on the 910 instead of your phone, there is no way to manage that database. You may want some numbers on your phone and not on your GPS. You can't delete individual entries or change the phone number or spelling without changing it in your phone first, deleting your whole paired device profile and starting over again.
As mentioned before, there are some neat features, but some are just not available in the US. As TomTom is marketed for different countries, it's really silly to continue selling the safety camera alert on US and Canadian websites and packaging when that feature isn't available outside Europe.
You can't plug in a USB or power cord directly into the unit itself. You MUST have the window or desktop mount. You lose these, and you can't charge the unit, talk to it, or hook up any other accessories. It also would have been nice to be able to charge the unit from the USB dock without a separate power cord.
Finally, customer service is just about nil. Reaching them by phone is difficult, and to contact them by email is very frustrating. Most FAQs on their website are for things already clearly spelled out in their manual (which is very much lacking in substance). It's simple to use for navigation, but fully utilizing all the available features will be a nerve racking and irritating learning experience.
Final Words
This unit was originally $600. I paid less than 1/3 of that for mine because it has been discontinued. If you can find it for less than $200, grab one! It's a great way to get into the world of GPS navigation. It's got a lot of great features, and if you don't care about its deficiencies, then no harm no foul. It's especially...Read more›

I got this as a replacement for the original adapter that I left by accident in a rental car. It works and I like the coiled cable but that's about all I can say about it. Now for the things I don't like.
Foremost, the end that plugs into the outlet is very large and clumsy. I have a '06 Subaru Legacy and it interferes with my access to controls and dashboard. It is difficult to grab the gear shift when it's in park and the adapter is plugged in. I imagine that it would be more clumsy in some cars and less in others but I view this as a major design flaw. If I had known about this beforehand, I probably wouldn't have bought it.
The other design flaw is the little blue light on the charger that shows power is flowing. That seems like a nice feature but I don't think the folks who designed it thought it through well enough. The light is very bright for night driving and too distracting. Again, it might depend on the your access to the outlet but my light is almost pointed straight at the driver.
I do not recommend this product to other buyers. I miss the original charger!

Garmin StreetPilot i2 2.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin StreetPilot i2 2.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had a Garmin iQue 3600 for over 3 years. I recently bought the i2 for my wife. We just used it in Phoenix for a few days and I must say I'm considering getting the i2 for myself. The suction cup works well and it is very compact and connects to the DC power via the mini-USB port. It makes for a very compact traveling companion.
At first, I felt that the hard button controls and no touch screen would make the interface difficult to use. To be honest, it works better in most cases! The thumb wheel/button works great and the back button is intuitive like a browser. It picks up the sats fast and gets great reception. The B&W screen is easier to see in sunlight and is pretty sharp and surprising usable for the small size. The voice is loud (and adjustable) and we had little or no issues. I like the 3D mode but you can switch to 2D if you like that better.
I agree with other reviewers about one way streets and occasional longer than needed routes. Also, U turns are a fact of life in Phoenix and it usually doesn't factor in U turns as a possibility so it takes you down and around instead. However, adjustments can be made in the settings to look for or avoid highways and not to ignore U turns, so look there.
I find that mounting my iQue is a pain so I use an external antenna and a sand bag mount. Having to haul all that on trips was a pain. I'll take the i2 from now on as it is all in one and very packable. I can see how there would be issues on windshield placement so think about that before you buy. I had no trouble on 2 different rental cars. Make sure you press solidly in middle of back before flipping lever and it wont go anywhere.
All in all, when you factor in the small size, nice usability and the price, this one is definitely top of the list! If you want a unit you will likely use in your own car all the time, I would suggest the iQue in a hard mount or the C300 series. These have touch screens and allow you to slide scroll and such. But they are twice the money!

No larger than a baseball and priced with affordability in mind, the StreetPilot i2 GPS navigation system is a great fit for commuters, college students, and corporate travelers looking to experience the ease and enjoyment of satellite navigation for the first time. Don't let the small size fool you; the i2 boasts many of the same powerful functions as Garmin's premium vehicle GPS navigators.
The StreetPilot i2 features a unique and convenient click-to-enter scroll wheel and a back button that makes it easy to select a destination from the unit's menu-driven interface. It also offers voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions through a built-in speaker, and should you miss a turn, the i2 will automatically recalculate the route to put you back on course. And perhaps most conveniently, the unit moves easily from vehicle to vehicle thanks to the integrated suction cup mount, so you don't need to go through a cumbersome process each time you change cars.
To get you from point A to point B, the StreetPilot i2 includes a MapSource City Select North America NT DVD, which contains mapping detail of the entire U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The DVD's nearly six million points of interest range from hotels and restaurants to gas stations and ATMs, along with local attractions such as amusement parks and museums. Simply load the City Select data onto the included 128 MB Transflash data card via a fast USB connection and you're set.
As an added benefit, you can now import customized points of interest with the help of Garmin's free POI Loader software. For instance, you can upload safety cameras or school zones, and then receive a warning if you are traveling too fast in these areas. In addition, an optional proximity-alert feature notifies you of upcoming custom POIs.
Maps are displayed on the i2's high-contrast backlit FSTN monochrome display, which includes a backlight for difficult lighting conditions. Motorists even have the choice of multiple perspectives--either a 3-D mapping angle or an overhead bird's-eye view. For added convenience, drivers can power the unit with either two AA batteries (six hours, typical use) or the included 12-volt adapter cable.
The StreetPilot i2 measures 3 x 2.74 x 2.15 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box StreetPilot i2, America's Lite Routable base map, City Select North America DVD, PC/USB cable, 12-volt adapter cable, vehicle suction-cup mount, dashboard adhesive disk, 128 MB Transflash data card, setup guide, user's manual.

Teletype 3100 Worldnav 3100 Deluxe Portable GPS Receiver Review

Teletype 3100 Worldnav 3100 Deluxe Portable GPS Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am agree with the other reviews: The turn locations can be quite off and the street names can be off.
I have been testing it with my wife's Magellan I brought 3 months ago.
The Magellan and the Teletype Premium side by side had interesting results.
Even with the Teletype having 12 million POI, the Magellan showed me like 35 points of interest (in real time) by Disneyland, CA. The teletype unit showed me 1 gas station (in real time).
Both the Magellan & Teletype unit failed to find In N Out (Burger Restaurant) as a POI [point of interest] without me physically pulling my hair out for 1/2 hour toying with both of them. The problem was: In N Out is spelled In-N-Out. I can not believe both manufacturers could not think of programming their software to recognize names with and without hyphens connecting the words.
Teletype could not find the Street Name: N Glassell, in Orange CA automatically. While Magellan has an advanced feature to only highlight letters of streets as you type in the name of the street. As you keep typing, the Magellan does a process of elimination and displays a list of only the streets that are left, before you finish typing. This is a really blow you out the door feature!!!
The Magellan doesn't do text to speech, but the Magellan even tells me that I arrived at my destination and what side of the street my destination is on. The Teletype doens't tell me I arrived as good as the Magellan. I finally noticed today I get a flag on the screen on the Teletype Prem. Which is kind of self defeating. I want to hear the directions to my location with text to speech while not having to look at the screen.
I brought 2 Teletype Prem., hoping to give both as gifts to my family in CA. The one person is legally blind, but can see enough to ride his bike to work sometimes. I felt I could give this Teletype Prem. GPS unit to him and take some of the pressure off his wife. Now I am very nervous about giving him the unit.
I put in a call today 7/1/07 to Teletype GPS, hopefully they got a patch, for the devices or I may have to return them and lose 25% restocking fee.
Even though I do not want to return the units.
I kind of got the hang of all the neat features now. Hopefully we can rectify the problem tomorrow.

Garmin StreetPilot 2620 3.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin StreetPilot 2620 3.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a 3 year old Navtech based CD GPS system in my Volvo and purchased this device to use in my older SUV that has no GPS system installed. I first tried using the new Streetpilot on a recent trip to Dubuque Iowa from Chicago; using it and the in car systems simultaneously to compare them. The Garmin SP 2620 outperfomed the Navtech installed system hands down. Although the in car system found satellites instantly the Garmin only took about 10 seconds to find them on start up. And it is MUCH faster on route calculations and more importatnly recalculations, about 3x faster. The in car sytem could not locate the exact street address in Dubuque even though I had the Iowa CD disk installed. The Garmin unit did. The details on local businesses was MUCH better with the Garmin. The map was clearer and was better illuminated. Only things I'd like to have in the Garmin would be a two map display option (for differing zooms of the the same route at the same time) and a display of the remianing miles on the main route display, you can get it but it's on another routing description page. The Garmin does display more immediately useful info such as time and distance to next turn so this is a very minor quibble. It is solid, extremely well built unit and mounts very nicely. It tilts and twists to optimize viewing. The "beanbag" friction mount works very well. The nice thing about the portable system is it's portabilty to other cars and rentals, for instance you can loan it to friends and family if you wish! Furthermore, upgrading is very easy via the Garmin web site whereas updates for my Volvo Navtech in car system have been rare and expensive. The hard drive in the Garmin is a memory card which I can see being enlarged if necessary but the current 512mb card has plenty of map details on it. A new CD disk set for my in car system costs over $200, the Garmin updates so far are free. Overall a stellar value and a device that exceeded my expectations in every way. If you travel by car (and who really likes flyng anyway?)in the US and/or Canada, get one, you'll love it.

With a host of software upgrades, the StreetPilot 2620 can lend assistance in almost any situation. You can find the most efficient route for deliveries or sales calls with the multiple destination feature. Enter all your destinations and the 2620 will automatically sort them to provide the best route. The StreetPilot makes it easy to avoid traffic jams or road work -- just tell the unit where you don't want to go and you'll be redirected around the congestion. Almost out of gas? No need to fret. With a time-saving feature that allows you to limit searches to gas stations, restaurants, and more, this unit will notify you of upcoming points of interest near your route. And, of course, there are those times when you'd just like to take the road less traveled. With the adjustable road class preference, you can select from major, medium, and minor road categories that will help you stay off the highways for a leisurely drive through small towns and winding backroads.

Nav 740 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

Nav 740 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have now had the Nav 740 for two months. I bought the Nav740 because I wanted to have a GPS device that I have learned to use before I take a trip this summer.
Why I bought the Nav740:
- It cost much less than a Garmin and Navigon with comparable features
- It had more features, such as, multi-stage trips, trip tracking log, set destination by longitude and latitude, etc.
- I had downloaded the manual before I bought the device from the Ingram V7 site and found the features to be what I was looking for.
- I had read that the basic software was based on a proprietary version of the same software that runds the Mio GPS units.
- The Nav 740 unit promises the largest Points of Interest (POI) database that I have seen advertised, something like 12 million.
- It has a removable battery
- It has a headphone jack which can either be used to listen to music or to amplify the GPS voice
- It uses an SD card with 2 Gigs, but I have read that a larger card can be used
- It has an external volume control
The unit has an opening menu of 4 touch "buttons" (software not hardware). One is the setting button for time, date, etc. Another is a calcuator. This is not so important to me, but it can be a help as it has three calculators - normal, scientific and conversions. It might help in a pinch.
Another button is for Multimedia. I haven't used it yet since I have other multimedia devices. I did not buy a GPS unit to play my multimedia.
The last button is for navigation. I find the choices offered with the navigation mode to be fairly well organized and I have used it often. You can navigate by entering an address, a recently used destination, a favorite destination you have programmed in, a POI, coordinates and Work and Home choices that the user programs. When entering an address you can go to the city center, a street intersection or a specific address. Not bad choices.
The Nav 740 has a nice 4.3 inch screen. It is plenty bright except with sunlight light shining directly on the screen. It's a good screen.
It is easy enough to switch between the map view and the options.
Some have complained about the sound of the voice. I find the two tts (text to speech) voices are very clear and the speaker is plenty loud. I tried the two English tts voices (Dave and Samantha) and found that the female voice cuts through the cabin noice better for me. Both are good, however, and work over anything but real loud radio or wind noises if I open the window.
I have found that recalculation is quite acceptable. It is not a supercomputer so that it takes a few seconds. It also has to sense that you really are going in a different direction.
There are three map views: 3D, oriented to North, and "Airplane view". I have used all three and find them helpful, although I prefer the 3D view. You can cycle through them with a tap of "button" on the screen. If I am not careful and the road is not smooth I sometimes hit the Route Options button but that is easy to get out of.
After two months of using it, the unit has only crashed once, and that is when I was going through a certain menu, and I was probably being too impatient. It has never stopped working when I have been navigating.
POIs have been helpful. I traveled to a city using the Nav 740 and since I had time to spare, I checked to see if there was a Starbucks in the area. It had one a couple miles away and took me there. It did not have the location down perfectly, but it was close enough to get me there.
Two cons:
I find that adding favorites to the list should be as simple as inputting an address list, just as the unit asks for to program the Work and Home button. It is a little more complicated. There is not reason for this. A simple programming change could easily make this simple.
When I try to move the map around with my finger, the unit does not do this smoothly. It either jumps back to the starting point or does something else that I don't understand. It's easy to get out of, but this could be better. Fortunately, this does not make or break the usefulness of the unit.
Over all comments.
A GPS unit, and I've looked at many of the current models, is not perfect. There are too many variables that the human brain is processing. I have found that you still have to keep your wits about you and not accept the GPS directions 100 percent of the time. That said, I needed to drive out of San Antonio at night in an unfamiliar area and I set the unit to go Home. It flawlessly talked me through turns through neighborhoods and got me home. I have tried other routes in the country and the unit wanted me to go on roads I would not have normally used. The driver still is master and commander of the trip.
Finally, I have appreciated having the Nav 740. It is good to know where I am and have options on where to drive. I find the unit easy enough to use and there are features that I still need to learn. I am satisfied. Before I bought this device I bought the HP 310 model and found it to be totally unintuitive. Having become a recent owner of an Apple iPhone and seen the ease of use and integration of addresses and map function and all the rest, I just say that if Apple ever decided to make a dedicated GPS unit, they would blow all the competition out of the water, including Garmin. That will be the next generation.

TomTom GO 930 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

TomTom GO 930 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought the GPS on Jan 14th 09. I did realize that I would get a unit that was repacked, maybe even used but fully functional. That I only get 6 months guarantee is mentioned in the description.
What I did NOT know at this point - and what is certainly not mentioned in the description - is the fact that TomTom does not give Latest Map Guarantee (LMG) on refurbished units! The LMG is a nice feature that (AFAIK) goes with every unit and gives you the opportunity to update the installed maps for free in the 30 days after purchase.
That means that you get the newest map for free in case right after your purchase a new map is released by TomTom, which is normally the case every 3 months.
This you do NOT get with the refurbished units. OK, I would accept that when the maps that I got with the unit would be fairly new. What I got are maps from spring 2008! And after talking to TomTom Support I realized that it is a game of luck what versions may come with the device, depending alone on the time when the unit was refurbished.
The feature I was looking forward to was Active Lane Guidance(ALG). I'm driving up and down I-95 and I have not yet seen a single ALG image! So the map version is pretty useless to me. The coverage with ALG surely gets better with every map version, ergo: by new maps.
The new maps will cost you at the moment 110$ for North America and another 160$ for Central and Western Europe.
Unit cost me 289 add both maps and you are at 559$.
New units sell currently for around 400$.
Think about it. Does that make sense?
BTW: Calling TomTom Support didn't change a thing: "...yes, no, very sorry, but no, no LMG on refurbished units..."

TomTom GO 930 REFURB 4.3 Inch GPS Navigator. If you're looking for the ultimate portable GPS navigator, you've got to consider the 930 series. TomTom's 2008 flagship models bring all of their technological advancements together with ease of use and a sleek design to present a severely cool device. For a couple of year's now, TomTom's been driving forward community-driven navigation features. They began by introducing with Map Share, which lets you instantly modify street names, street direction, and custom locations called points of interest (POIs) on your own device, then upload them to TomTom's HOME network and download changes made by all of the other users. When you do this, TomTom gets to find out what routes your device has been taking. The data is anonymous, but it's given TomTom an enormous pile of route and speed data, which they've used to tie community data to routing with their new IQ Routes feature, which calculates routes using the actual recorded average speeds of travel to calculate your trip rather than posted speed limits, giving you an extremely accurate prediction of how long any given route will actually take at any given time. There are a host of other interesting features, and you can read about them here. Refurbished.

Nextar X4-T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with MP3 Player Review

Nextar X4-T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my second NEXTAR GPS. Upgrading from the X3(3" screen) instead of buying new glasses.
This brand has several superior features I have not seen in other brands.
Additionally it does not have a load of 'commercial' materials as the Garmens do from AAA.
+Voice to text. The GPS announces route changes/turns and includes the street name route you'll be turning onto. No need to look away from the road when the GPS says turn to identify what road/route you're turning onto.
+You can create an itinerary for your trip if you want to go a specific route you already know.
+ You can identify a "current location" and then save it to favorites.
+ An additional feature is available when looking up destinations by address, or on any location added to favorites. After saving the address/location to favorites you can EDIT the address/location title, and add a title you will be more familiar with than just the address.
The voice on this model is clear and the volume is easily controlled by a volume knob on the side of the unit, no need to go into the set up.
The 4" screen has good resolution and color and routes appear to be up-to-date.
The map data is USA only and is on a 1GB SD card. I have not attempted to go on-line and research maps for Canada which I also want.
I have had the unit for about 1 month (May 8-08) and I am sure I will learn more about it but travel often by car and it has been great. It easily recalculates route directions if you fail to turn where directed (AS I HAVE) and also recalculates if you know a better road. When taking your own route it will often direct you to make a U-turn when possible, but it will eventually come around.
Needless to say I love this brand & model.

Navman iCN 750 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Navman iCN 750 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A major factor in my decision of which GPS receiver to purchase was the screen size. I wanted to be able to see the details, as I do not have the greatest eyesight. This unit has a four-inch diagonal screen. It is one of the largest in portables. Another factor is that my car, a 2006 Nissan 350Z has an opening in the dash for an in-dash GPS unit. When I purchased the vehicle, I could not see paying $1800 and did not ask whether it could be added at that time. I also must say that the Navman ICN750 fits perfectly in the opening at the very rear, which helps shade it from direct sunlight. This is good since the sun tends to wash out the screen a little bit. Still, it can be read in direct sunlight. I am not using the supplied mounting device, as it must be mounted on the dash, which would obscure the gauges and is not removable to be remounted elsewhere such as a second vehicle. I have emailed the company asking whether the suction mount was supposed to be supplied along with the sticky pad I received. I may not have received it because I live in southern California and it is illegal to mount anything to the windshield. Still, that should be my decision to make. I am uncertain as to how I will mount it in my vehicle. It sits well in the opening and has only fallen face down once. The opening is well lined and cannot damage anything.
Since I have only owned it for 5 days I have not used the unit very many times. I first used it to go to work which is about a 20-25 minute drive. The device took about three minutes to find my location with the satellites. If you power the unit off and later power it on in the same vicinity, it takes only seconds to find your location. The unit wanted me to take the freeway but since I much rather drive the coastal route; I ignored the third direction which was a right turn. I opted to go straight which would lead me to my normal route. After telling me to turn right for a second time, which I also ignored, it announced to continue straight. While continuing straight, I knew I would have to turn left as the street would end and I would have no choice but to turn. This might confuse someone who is not familiar with the area. The trip gets boring from this point until the roundabout, as I just have to continue on Pacific Coast Highway until I get to that location. Upon approaching the roundabout, the unit announces to take the third exit, which is correct. After the exit, the next announcement is to turn right. Now the announced right is a very rough road, very short but not one I like to drive on since there are so many pot holes so I ignored the direction. No problem, the unit simply announces the next right to turn on. It seems as though the unit calculates the first opportunity to make a turn, which is not always the best decision as I have stated previously. Now, I have to say that I had photographed my place of business so that I could see if the GPS could actually find it. Unfortunately, it sees the destination as the street I last drive on before the parking lot I need to turn into before parking. If I was not familiar with the area and there were many businesses as could be the case, I would be a bit confused. At least it got me to within 100 feet of my intended destination.
I find that the buttons on the touch screen to be not very intuitive however, they are not beyond comprehension as you can see with some poking around. The screen is very prone to fingerprints although not so annoying when the unit is on as when powered off. The prints wipe off easily. A PDA or other type of screen protector would help prevent this minor inconvenience.
The software would not load for me initially. I do not know why, although I suspect that there must be something that my firewall, antivirus, or other software must be trying to prevent its access to the internet. I just rebooted my laptop and the software came up with options of which aspects I wanted to load.
I like this GPS unit very much, although I have not had much experience with this type of item. It does not seem very difficult to use, the options are many, the screen is large enough for me and the price was reasonable. I would make this purchase again. If I can, I will update after some time and possibly, after I take my trip to Hawaii in November. Yes, it has maps that cover Hawaii.
Since my last writing, I have contacted Navman about the suction mount device and have received no response. I am very disappointed. Customer service is very important to me. Still, I am pleased with the gps unit.

I read lots of reviews and decided to go with a refurbished Quest-I just to save a buck, also, I ride motorcycles and from what I read, this one can be easily mounted on the bike or stick into my pocket too, so I ordered it on my B-Day and very pleased with it, it always put a big smile on my face when I hear "Arriving destination on right.."
I have only had it for a little over a month now and only used it in the local state, it already saved my time/gas twice big time...I will bring it to my mini-vacation this weekend to see how it goes...

Rand McNally 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Rand McNally 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

From the moment I saw the packaging, I knew I had "Navigation For Dummies," which made me relieved and eager to dive right in. I have found the Rand McNally device to be superior to others in that it provides ample warning time prior to making turns, allows me to preview streets off the freeway for alternative routes, and thereby resetting itself, and offers a soothing voice that is far from robotic. It comes with a sleek stylus, but also responds to direct touch. Finally, the maps are colorful and easy to read. This is a great system for those needing some extra help in orientation.

Pharos Drive 135 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Pharos Drive 135 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this gps for about 1 month. As far as now, I have big trouble with this product.Maybe I am just not smart enough to use it.There are several problems.
First: sometimes it will spend a lot of time to lock on the satellite signal, > 1 min.
Second: the processor is really slow. very hard to tolerate.
Third: the database of Point of Interest is too small, I even cannot find a nearby Walmart through this gps.
Fourth: the voice system is bad.
I am not able to use any other service from this gps other than the "follow me up" function.
I DO NOT recommend anybody to buy this product.
