Com paired to the Tom Tom the graphics are better. Set up is easy to and the arm that extends from the window is easy to see and dosent get in the way. The problem I have with it is when you try to find different stores or places. THis is the only thing that the Tom Tom is better. Not that it was much better though. I tried finding Whole Foods and 24 hr fitness and either does not give me good directions or cant find it. Updating is also a problem. I cannot figure out how to use it. The TOm TOm was much easier and updated automatically. Also you can change the audio alot better wit a wide selections with the TOm TOm..its not that its a bad GPS its just I expected alot more then what I got

Arkon MM329-ST Removable Swivel Tightening Air Vent Mount for Mio Moov 300 Series GPS Review

Arkon MM329-ST Removable Swivel Tightening Air Vent Mount for Mio Moov 300 Series GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It definitely works, but only has one mount adapter compared to some alternatives like NAVGEAR 14027 Universal GPS Vent Mount which come with many adapters for various GPS devices, except missing the single-slot Magellan or Mio. I bought this primarily to get the single-slot adapter that comes with this and can be used with the NavGear 14027. This mount comes with a 2-slot adapter built in that the single-slot mount you see pictured connects on top of. This mount underneath the single-slot adapter matches the 2-slot magellan mount. So you can take the single-slot adapter and connect it to another 2-slot magellan adapter on another mount if you want to convert it to a single-slot mount and use that mount. I really liked the NavGear 14027 vent mount and can use just the adapter plate that this comes with to connect to that which didn't come with it. However, this mount still works well enough on its own.
This connects to your vent similarly to the other mounts by sliding between the vent blades whether they are horizontal, vertical, or have different spacing as long as they are not too narrow. It fits fine in my Honda Accord. The arms are quite versatile and can be adjusted within the bracket by being able to freely rotate them to angle up or down depending on your vent angle on horizontal blades, or rotate them to grab vertical blades. Just rememember you can completely turn them over to adjust as you see fit. You can also slide them left and right within the bracket to match the spacing of your vent. The weight ultimately sits on the bottom lever so all it is trying to do is hang on for stability and use gravity to hold the unit most of the time.
This vent connection differs from the NavGear 14027 by using clips instead of a spring and slider system. It makes it easier to slide on and off compared to the NavGear 14027's spring-based system. However this makes you squeeze an all-plastic clip to make it flex unlike a metal spring. Both will have fatigue over time, but I think a spring will last a lot longer than the all-plastic clip that you bend by squeezing. I suspect the force of frequent use will break this faster. Also, it is pretty strong, and it feels rougher on my vent blades than the spring system which is rougher on my hands. So this one is easier to put on and take off, but I worry more about the durability and being more rough on the vent blades. I prefer the NavGear connection, but this one seem fine. I would just be careful and it should probably be fine.
The mount adapter itself that connects to your GPS unit work well enough. This seems to be identical to the single-slot adapter on the magellan windshield mount that came with my magellan, except that as you can see from the picture it doesn't have the offset slot to connect the power to the mount. You can still plug in the power while mounted, it is just that the power cord isn't also mounted firmly on the adapter like the official magellan adapter. I prefer this in some ways because I had a really hard time trying to get my official magellan windshield adapter to connect because it didn't perfectly line up. So by being free of the mount it is very easy just to slide your magellan over the mount slot and connect the power separately. I really like that. However, the magellan seems to rely on the offset power connection being tied into the adapter for a more firm grip and stability. It by no means will fall off and is a good connection with just the single slot. You can still use the screene asily. However, it isn't a firm enough grip to keep it from shaking around more with road vibrations an bumps. So it definitely shakes more than other mount methods that have a firmer grip. It just seems to be a flaw in a single slot design that requires an adapter to hang onto the power cord too to add stability. I was going to use a twist tie or something next to try to connect the power cord a little bit to add some more stability. It is certainly usable as-is, just not as nice as a firm grip compared to my TomTom, and more annoying for it to shake more. However, this same single-slot connection is about the only choice you have for single-slot magellans and will be the same on most until they improve as single-slot magellans become more common. Even magellan only offered just the windshield mount that it came with, which I cannot use.

Magellan 4.7-Inch and 4.3-Inch GPS Leather Case Review

Magellan 4.7-Inch and 4.3-Inch GPS Leather Case
Average Reviews:

I purchased this case for use with my Magellan 1475T GPS unit. My GPS fit into the case perfectly and is sufficiently nondescript enough to be mistaken for a date book if accidently left in plain sight in a vehicle. The case is slender enough that when holding the GPS unit, it fits into my computer bag and does not take up a great deal of room. It has protected my GPS during several trips through the hands of airport-TSA inspectors and x-ray machines.

The traffic link is a power cord that replaces the power cord packaged with the GPS unit and has the added ability to receive traffic information. I got it free when I ordered a Roadmate 1470 several months ago. I appreciate that it's very simple in that you swap one cord for another so you are still using only a single cord that can both power the unit and receive traffic info.
Provided I am in an area where there is an active signal to receive, my GPS can show traffic delays either in the overall area or along my specific route when I have entered a destination when I touch the red on screen traffic icon. I live about 30 miles outside Philadelphia and while still in my driveway, it shows traffic delays in and around Philly so it has a reasonable range. When using it for traffic on my route, it can alert me to both slow traffic and stopped traffic and can provide a detour. It shows a revised ETA for the detour so I know how the detour might affect my arrival time before I select it. I have found it to be a bit helpful while I've been traveling in unfamiliar areas.
I do not believe that I am currently using the traffic feature on my 1470 to its full potential since I haven't taken the time to figure out how to optimize this feature. However, the Magellan Traffic Link does exactly what it's meant to do, power the unit and receive traffic info, and does it reliably.

Magellan RoadMate 3065 4.7-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic Review

Magellan RoadMate 3065 4.7-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic
Average Reviews:

I bought this product at a big box store, on sale at the same price. I mounted it on one of those beanbag dash mounts; worked fine. The directions are clear; super-accurate. It updates when I deviate from course almost immediately, except once when my local knowledge flummoxed it for about 15 seconds.
The screen would be easy to see (less the sunglare) if it weren't just too close for my driving glasses and just too far for me to peer over them. That's my personal problem. Maybe I need bifocals. The spoken directions are clear and well-timed, so a detailed look at the screen isn't really necessary.
The traffic wake-up is virtually useless; it has to be connected in the car to work, and I am not leaving the unit in the car overnight, and certainly not in the garage at work, having already lost a stereo. Plus my car needs the key in the Accessories position to power the cigarette lighter, and I suspect that would not be a good idea. I haven't encountered any traffic to test it on the road, yet (which I guess is a good thing).
I had it about a week when it died: in the car, on the floor (the advantage of the beanbag mount) while I was in a store for about an hour. It would not turn back on. The Magellan support was excellent: I called, got an RMA number, shipped it, and expect a new unit (not a refurb) back in a few days (7-10 after shipping). I'll be a little more careful about heat, though you would expect that a device designed to sit exposed to the sky...
Assuming the replacement keeps its cool, I would recommend this, or one of the similar models.

Case Logic GPSP-6 Professional GPS Case for 4.7- and 5.3-Inch Flatscreen GPS Navigators Review

Case Logic GPSP-6 Professional GPS Case for 4.7- and 5.3-Inch Flatscreen GPS Navigators
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over the years I have found Case Logic to be a dependable, go to brand. Usually the folks there do a bang up job of designing and manufacturing durable, cost effective tools for my gear. When it comes to my new Case Logic GPS6, the product designers at Case Logic totally missed the boat on this one.
The manufacturer's website and many of the tron retailers boast a similar claim that this model will store 4.7" through 5.3" GPS units and their accessories. With dimensions of 6.2" x 2" x 4", there is no way this product can safely provide storage for both my Magellan Maestro 4700 and its car charger, etc;. At most, maybe a couple of SD cards could make the ride with my GPS system. Its a no brainer that this product is not the tool for people like me that switch back and forth from vehicles.
Case Logic loses style points for the installation of double zippers and the elastic extensions. The latter is to keep the case from opening all the way. The concave bottom takes up valuable interior storage space. Unusual for Case Logic gear, this product comes in as average at best. Definitely not the product for my Magellan and accessories. Perhaps its better suited for a large bodied portable hard drive.
Like other models before it, the GPS6 is made of molded EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) and sports an interior mesh pocket. On the outside, the faux perforated leather strip and satin finish nickel logo are okay touches. A removable wrist strap and microfiber cloth are also included. The manufacturer tags on to this product a 25 year warranty. Case Logic also boasts a better then usual, informative website. A toll free customer care number is available Monday through Friday 7am - 5pm MST.
Compared to other Case Logic products that I have purchased, the GPS6 case comes in as average at best. The main fault lies in what the designers forgot about. ACCESSORY STORAGE.

Safely stow away your valuable 4.7 or 5.3-inch GPS device when you remove it from your windshield or dock mount with this case from Case Logic. Stylishly finished with perforated leather and a pearl-ized nickel logo, it will protect and complement most GPSs.

Made of durable, molded EVA (Ethylene-vinyl acetate) material, it's a perfect choice for safeguarding your investment. A soft, jersey case interior keeps your screen scratch free, and the removable wrist strap allows for easy portability. Interior stretch mesh pockets are perfect for stowing memory cards and other accessories, and a micro-fiber cloth is included for cleaning up any smudges on your screen.

Magellan RoadMate 1470 4.7-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

Magellan RoadMate 1470 4.7-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

I originally ordered a Garmin and sent it back for the 1470 since the Garmin froze up on my Wife and it could not find a satellite when the unit rested on my lap while traveling down a main road in Pittsburgh.
Now, I wont bore you with my trip to Grandmaws house. The bottom line is the 1470 GPS worked well until I updated the maps. Two days after the 2.20 map update the unit froze and finally lockedup on the Magellan startup screen. There is no way to reset the unit and connecting it to a computer did not help as the computer wouldn't recognize the unit was connected. You would think Magellan would actually have a little reset hole on the unit. After reading about similar problems online I realized the unit cannot be fixed and must be returned.
I liked the size of the screen, the maps and the lane assist feature, however the on/off switch is really cheesey. The switch has 3 positions on/off/reset and it is very easy to put the GPS in the reset position rather that off, in fact I dont know if using the off position actually turns the GPS off, it seems like mine usually ended up in the reset position, maybe that contributed to the malfunction. The other complaint users have it the 12v connection is on the bottom of the unit.
After I updated the maps I notice several roads completed for a couple years were not shown on their so called new map update. Why cant they sell these units with the latest maps, I suspect its some kind of scam to milk another $80 out of you.
The good: The Magellans can find a satellite while I'm in my house and they obtain the signal rather quickly.
I will order another 1470 and NOT update the maps if I can find one for $99.00 as I was happy until it quit working.
Now my opinion on GPS's:
Anyone paying much more than $100 for any GPS is crazy. I bought my Wife a refurbished Magellan last year for Christmas and it has worked great, I have used it daily since I am a Trucker.
I understand if you send the GPS in to be fixed they send you back a refurbished unit anyway, so how would you feel about that after spending about $300 on a new one.
I believe that these GPS mfgs add a couple of new chicken resturants to the POI's and that constitutes a map update, gimme $80 please.

Magellan AN0302SWXXX Dashboard Beanbag Mount for GPS Navigators Review

Magellan AN0302SWXXX Dashboard Beanbag Mount for GPS Navigators
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Magellan Beanbag Mount to securely hold my new Magellan 1475T to the dash of my car. First off, as mentioned in other reviews, this mount is not effective in cars with a curved dashboard since the base is rigid and won't conform to the dash. In reality, the name of the product is misleading since it is not a beanbag in any way shape or form. Amazon should quickly remove the term beanbag from the name of the product and from the product description. It is a rigid friction-based dashboard mount that requires the dash to be relatively flat. There is an attachment provided with the kit that can be adhesively attached to your dashboard and actually hooks to the back of the mount to prevent it from sliding around or falling off the front of the dashboard, but I would still be hesitant to purchase this if your car has an overly curved dashboard. I also don't like the thought of attaching anything to the dash which is why I considered the beanbag mount to begin with. While this mount works in my new Subaru Outback (which has a flat surface at the center of the dash), it doesn't work so well in my older Acura TL which has a curved dashboard.
Using the beanbag mount in the Outback, I am able to position the GPS on the dash at a good viewing level (doesn't interfere with my view out the front window at all) and within comfortable arms reach (I know, I know - you're not supposed to be using it while driving so it shouldn't make a difference). Basically, you just suction the window mount that came with the GPS to the smooth plastic surface of the mount and place it on your dash. The mount is heavy enough to stay in place while driving and convenient enough to store in the center console when not in use.
Unfortunately, I did have one problem. The first unit shipped to me had a slight discoloration in several places on the mounting surface (that I initially didn't notice) which I am assuming was glue that dried to the plastic mounting surface during the manufacturing process. This defect prevented the GPS Unit from securely suctioning to the mount which resulted in the GPS unit coming loose after a few minutes and flying from the dash. Fortunately, no one was in the passenger seat at the time and, more importantly, there was no damage to my GPS. Thankfully, Amazon came through and immediately sent out a replacement (it's good to know that at least one company still provides a solid level of customer service).
If you have a car with a relatively flat dashboard and want the convenience of mounting your GPS to the dashboard, this could be a good alternative. However, I'm sure the other "real" beanbag mounts would work just as well (if not better) and provide much more flexibility when placing them on the dashboard of any car.
As an aside, this mount looks very similar to the Arkon CM012 sold by Amazon for less than half the price of the Magellan. Sure, if you look at the pictures of the Magellan and the Arkon on-line, you would clearly see that although both mounts look somewhat similar the mounting surfaces are clearly different. However, when I received the Magellan Beanbag Mount, the mounting surface looked exactly like the one pictured for the Arkon and not the one pictured for the Magellan. This initially made me think that Amazon sent me the wrong one by accident because the Magellan name wasn't anywhere on the product. However, I did finally see the Magellan name on a small piece of literature that came in the box with the mount. If I had to guess, it is manufactured by the same company and then sold under the Magellan name. So if you are interested in this mount, you may want to check out the Arkon CM012 first.

Magellan RoadMate 1424 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan RoadMate 1424 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

Although I have owned an in vehicle navigation product that was built-in to a car, this was my first time with an aftermarket navigation system. The navigation is excellent and satellite acquisition is quick. The display is good, but in the brightest sunlight is a bit challenging to see. This isn't necessarily a fault unique to this product.

Overall the most impressive thing about this unit is it's size and build quality. So compact yet with maps for the entire US and North America.

I think that it should have come with an in-home plug-in charger in addition to the in car charger, but that's my pet peeve.
One of the larger omissions (IMHO) was not stating on the box or in the literature that updating the software and maps in the navigation unit requires a Windows PC. It can NOT be updated via any Apple computers. Ouch!
Finally, I am told the map updates are around $80. Sounds steep, but considering what it takes to update a digital map of the entire US, a fairly cheap price. And frankly, unless you are driving somewhere that has brand new roads, you won't notice the difference. You could just wait and buy an entirely new unit every few years for not much more money. But I actually believe that it's a good idea to support the updating of the maps by purchasing an update.
The technical support I received (when I had a question about how to switch the map from 2D to a 3D view and back) was very competent, and surprised me considering the initial purchase price of the unit. Magellan seems to have good people and customer friendly policies.

I have a Magellan Maestro 4040 that is 4 or 5 years old. The last couple of map updates cost $80 each and the last one available for that model was 2008. I looked at the Roadmate 1475 on the Magellan website and a refurbished one was $150. The cable for live traffic was $80.
I purchased my Refurbished Magellan Roadmate 1475 from Amazon for $84. The live traffic cable was $30 and of course no shipping nor sales tax charges.
The 1475 has free map updates for life and the live traffic updates have no subscription fee; no charge at all.
I am thoroughly pleased with the unit. In fact I purchased a second one. The menus are all improved and more user friendly than those of the Maestro 4040.
I strongly recommend this model to anyone purchasing their first GPS Navigator or replacing an older unit. A terrific bargain.

Magellan Maestro 4700 4.7-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

Magellan Maestro 4700 4.7-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this refurbished Magellan Maestro 4700 for my pick up and also own another one that I bought new last year. Both work great with the exception of the on and off again bluetooth and voice command issues that I still encounter from time to time. I've gone through my fair share of slow and inconsistent GPS products ranging from Garmin, TomTom and yes even Magellan. You really have to do your homework. I settled on getting a second one of these because my first one has been a workhorse.
Just like my first purchase, downloading updates via the included USB cable was quick and without issues. Powering up is a breeze. Total time for entering starting point to destination is about 45 seconds. The One Touch screen is on the money. The menu allows for editing for one's own personal choices. I really have come to like the Predictive Traffic feature. In short, it creates alternate routes for known traffic tie ups.
Even though this system is primed for Bluetooth, not all mobile devices are compatible. This refurbished model paired well with one out of three cell phones. The other two were hit and miss. Connections were also dropped a bit more often then expected and clarity was an issue. Like our first Magellan 4700, my personal phone did not pair up at all with this unit. Maybe its a great working feature with the right phone. Bluetooth rates 3 stars at best.
Like every GPS system before it, Voice Command on this unit is simply a wasted feature that works when it wants to. This add on alone receives a failing grade from me. On the other hand, Spoken Street Name Guide with text to speech is clear and precise. The 3D Landmarks add on is a nice touch. I have yet to use the Find My Car feature. The free, no membership required AAA Guide is loaded with great up to date information.
The Maestro 4700 measures in at over 5" wide x 3.5" height and weighs about 6 ounces. The biggest draw for me personally is the large 4.7" color touch screen, predictive traffic, and the lane guide arrow features. The user friendly one touch interface is definitely a winner. On the downside, the Maestro 4700's screen is not viewable in all lighting conditions. Granted its not as bad as my previous model, but there is still some glare to contend with.
Quick Spell automatically fills in the blanks and makes locating a destination easy. One of the sweetest features is the lane guide arrows (Highway Lane Assist) program that sounds a bell when my next turn is coming up. It quickly guides me into the correct lane without the usual "Oops, how did I miss that exit?"
The Maestro 4700 comes preloaded with maps of the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. Additional maps can be stored on board via SD Card. Included accessories are a windshield mount, storage pouch, dash mounting disk, car power adapter, handbook, USB cable, and an informative CD. I recommend buying a good protective case. Magellan loses major style points for not including an AC power supply plug. Unplugged, the battery provided me a little over 2 hours of power.
Even though Magellan's products have vastly improved in the last few years, its customer support is totally a lost cause. Add the frustrating wait time before a human picks up and combine that with their totally outdated scripts, and the customer still isn't any closer to resolving the problem at hand. Customer support is ONE STAR at best. A one year warranty is tagged onto this product.
The continued glitches with both Bluetooth and Voice Command that I experienced on my older 4700 are not that much different on this reconditioned unit. These issues undoubtedly keep the Maestro 4700 from picking up more then a four star rating. Still it covers the basics and gets me to and from my destination. That's all I need.

Magellan RoadMate 1470 4.7-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan RoadMate 1470 4.7-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a Magellan user for several years - have owned four of their GPS systems, and always appreciate how they have improved their products. This unit is my 5th, and replaces a Magellan 4040. After using it for a while I've confident in saying this is the best one yet!
The most visible change is the actual size of the unit. The screen size has been increased, but the unit is thinner and lighter. Very sleek appearance, and the screen is a real joy -- sharp, clear graphics even in the sun, and bigger on-screen buttons for easy use. The mounting system has also been streamlined, and looks and works well. It mounts very easily on a NavMat holder (basically a bean-bag system that I got on Amazon. I'm a huge Navmat fan - makes it a snap to hide the GPS with narry a trace. Best accessory by far for any GPS).
The power connector was not well thought out, however. You have to connect it to the GPS unit AFTER you mount it in the holder. They should have moved the connector it a wee bit to the side to avoid that.
The only button is a slide-type power button on the top. Boot-up time is OK -- not speedy, but not a huge delay either. It does not have a "sleep" mode, so you have to do a cold boot every time. Not a problem in real world use - by the time you get situated in your car, the unit is ready to go.
Voice is clear and easy to understand. Not as natural sounding as a TomTom, but understandable.
Pretty much any recent GPS unit will get you where you want to go. I've found the routing on the Magellans to be very similar to Garmins - could be because they both use the same mapping set (Navteq). The Magellan shines, however, in features that I find helpful. The direction of the next turn is always visible regardless of how far away the next turn will be. Up until recently, Garmin did not offer this (they do now on some of their units). Sounds like a small issue, but I find it very helpful. The Magellan also allows you to very easily exclude a route (or portion). That's a fairly standard feature nowadays, but Magellan allows you to do it in a snap.
In terms of routing, Magellan offers four options (fastest, shortest, most use of freeways and least use). You can see all four options on the map (as a summary) at the same time so you can pick the best one for your needs. Perfect!!
Love the AAA Guidebook, which is a unique Magellan feature. Lets you get details about restaurants and other points of interest just like the paper version from AAA. I used it a lot in my 4040, especially when traveling out of town.
Other unique Magellan features I appreciate is the "ding dong" sound right before a turn (incredibly accurate!) and the fact that the software reminds you to "stay on the current road" when you encounter major exits. Some find that to be nagging, but it has saved me from inadvertently exiting on more than one occasion.
A new feature for Magellan is the lane guidance. Very nicely done. I've used this feature on Navigon units, and found it rather unhelpful. Magellan's implementation is far more useful, with better, clearer graphics. However, lane guidance is not available for every road.
The software is also nicely done - very logical to use. If you're a past Magellan user you can pick this up and use it in a second. If not, there's a short printed user's guide in the box (plus a CD-ROM with more in-depth info) that gets you up to speed quickly. The box also includes the mount, power connector for the car, and a USB cable. It does not include an AC adapter.
OK, now for the bad news. When it comes to customer service, Magellan has been horrid. We're talking so bad it's almost funny. I'm hoping this situation will change - the company was bought by Mitac late last year, and perhaps this will signal a change for the better in terms of customer support. Lord knows, they couldn't get any worse.
The leader, in my opinion, for customer support is Garmin. They are nice to deal with on the phone, answer emails promptly, and offer regular firmware updates. Whenever I buy a GPS as a gift I always buy Garmin since I don't want to saddle the recipient with the miserable service that Magellan offers. It's a shame, since Magellan offers some real benefits over Garmin, and more value for the money. Tom Tom is also decent when it comes to support, but they use TeleAtlas maps which are less complete than NavTeq (sp?).
Bottom line -- if you're looking for a straightforward GPS at a good price, this should be on your short list. It lacks features such as Bluetooth and an MP3 player, but for me, I want a GPS to offer guidance and not entertainment. This has a very robust feature set, great screen, and well-designed software. It also has traffic capabilities -- did not test that feature out, so I can't comment on it.
The "safe" bet continues to be Garmin. You'll pay a bit more, and get less features, but you can be assured of solid support. Whether Magellan's new owners will put them back on the right track (if you'll excuse the horrid, but unavoidable pun) in terms of customer service is not yet clear. I hope so -- they make a great product!
UPDATE: 5/21/09 There's a firmware update on the Magellan site. No new functionality (in terms of new features) but, according to the release notes it improves overall performance. Easy to install - just follow the included step-by-step instructions. It seems like it makes the unit a bit faster, but that could just be my imagination.
