Com paired to the Tom Tom the graphics are better. Set up is easy to and the arm that extends from the window is easy to see and dosent get in the way. The problem I have with it is when you try to find different stores or places. THis is the only thing that the Tom Tom is better. Not that it was much better though. I tried finding Whole Foods and 24 hr fitness and either does not give me good directions or cant find it. Updating is also a problem. I cannot figure out how to use it. The TOm TOm was much easier and updated automatically. Also you can change the audio alot better wit a wide selections with the TOm TOm..its not that its a bad GPS its just I expected alot more then what I got

This never worked out of the package, which was a huge inconvenience to discover immediately before a trip. I was too busy to return it within 30 days so it was a waste. Very disappointed. Clearly a cheap product, hit or miss.

Magellan 980637 External Antenna Review

Magellan 980637 External Antenna

Used on new Magellan 760. Happy to see that they gave you instructions. Magellan reference manual doesn't show you how to attach. You have to pull off the antenna attached to the Magellan GPS (it snaps on and off) and plug the external antenna in. The magentic base really holds on to the point it is hard to remove, has a rubber ring base but it doesn't completely cover the whole base just the outside edge. Works well you get a better constant signal than using the units supplied antenna but you have to figure out what to do with all the extra wire that you don't use. I gave it a 4 stars due to the pricing. Check out aftermarket antenna's before buying one.

Magellan RoadMate 700 3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan RoadMate 700 3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was a battle between the Garmin 2610 and the Roadmate 700. My main criteria is ease of use and accuracy. Actually, I bought this unit for my wife who works as a home visiting nurse. She has been relying on Thomas Guide Maps eversince. So, I want a GPS receiver that is very user friendly, that even a grandma can use. I compared the 2 units side by side at Fry's. I researched the whole Cyberspace for the best car navigation system to date, and I found the answer in the Magellan Roadmate 700.
POSITIVE: Wow! The crisp display and big screen was one of the factors that attracted me to the Roadmate. The Garmin LCD has 256 colors while the Raodmate has a TFT with 32,000 color capability. The roads are more easier to look at because of the color rendition. You can even adjust color settings to make it look like the Thomas Guide Maps. We've been using the Roadmate for about 2 weeks now and so far the WAAS is always active. This results in greater accuracy. According to my wife once she is in front of her patients house, the Roadmate acknowledeges that destination has been reached. It also tells whether the house is in the left/right of the street. This proved to be very valuable since she doesn't have to look left and right looking for the house. It recalculates routes very fast in case you miss a turn or exit.
Another thing, don't worry about the flimsy aircon vent mount, just call technical support and they send you a windshield gooseneck mount which is very nice. Now that's what I call customer service! It grips very firmly to the windshield like your rearview mirror. I think it is better than the bean bag dash mount.
The LCD display is very intuitive. It automatically zooms in while your getting near your destination, and it also shifts to 3D when your approaching a turn. When you lose GPS signal while your in a tunnel, the display automaticlly goes to the turn by turn mode so you can still be guided. The touch screen is amazing. Those using the old GPS units with buttons will want this unit.
I also like the route exclusion feature. For example, I always want to avoid the 91 freeeway because of the terrible traffic. You can customize it to always exclude it or you can just touch the 91 route in the turn by turn display and tell it to disregard that freeway, and alas! you are directed to take another route.
The unit also assigns up to 3 users, each user setting is customizable, just like when you log in Windows. Within each user you can save up to 100 addresses. Previous destinations are also saved automatically. This is comparable to the waypoint feature in the Garmin 2610.
The voice guidance is all you need! No need to look at the unit while you are driving. As of this time, we have not been misdirected by the vocal guidance on any route. But I will update my review if we experience such. This equals to SAFETY while driving.
For those worried that having a hard-drive in a portable GPS unit might be bad, the internal harddrive that comes with this unit is similar to the microdrive in compact flash cards. The unit is made for rugged use, unlike the ones on PC's.
Roadmate 500 vs 700? I'd say go for the 700. The fact that you don't have to buy additional CF cards in the future justifies the $200 hundred dollar difference. Not to mention that you still have to pre-authorize CF cards for $50 prior to use, although your first one is free.
Another bonus, the unit can be used for off-road driving! I hav'nt tested it but the Magellan website says it is capable of that. I have to call tech support to confirm.
NEGATIVE: BAD! The one thing that really bothers me is that there is no post-office listings in the POI. How can they forget the USPS locations. I occasionally look for post-offices while I travel. There is a mention here that the documentation is bad. That is quite true. If you are a non-technical type of person, the manual will suffice. For example, I want to know how to update the firmware and maps, there is no mention of that in the docs. Even though the Roadmate 700 comes with an internal hard drive, it still has a compactflash port, there is no mention of that in the manual if it is operable or not. It does not come with a USB cord nor an AC adapter like the Roadmate 500. How come? This is the top of the line unit.
The waypoint feature of the Garmin 2610 is preferred by experienced GPS users over the previous destinations feature of the Magellan.
The price of the Magellan 700 is several hundereds more compared to the Garmin 2610 but I think it's features justify the additional cost. What I have listed here is the positives and negatives based on 2-3 week use of the GPS. Hey! The positives outnumber the negs. I also agree with the other reviewers that this isn't a perfect unit, but to date it's the best you can buy.

This powerhouse GPS unit just keeps gaining in popularity. Recently bestowed the honor of being named one of "Oprah's Favorite Things for Holiday 2004" it's just getting better and better every year. With the previous version of the RoadMate 700 lacking in included accessories this years RoadMate 700 hits a home run as Magellan has wisely included in the package a windshield suction cup mount, a 12V DC vehicle power adapter, 110V AC power supply, USB data cable, universal cradle and of course a user's manual.
The Magellan RoadMate 700 offers a powerful dash-mounted navigation tool with turn-by-turn voice prompts, making it easy to get to new and unfamiliar locales anywhere in the lower 48 U.S. states and Canada (For a fee it can be loaded European maps using the Magallen web site and the included USB connection cable). It also features a bright color TFT LCD screen (2.25 by 3 inches), touchscreen input, WAAS reception (for 3-meter accuracy), and multiple ways to select your route and then view it on screen.

The RoadMate 700 is one of the few GPS devices that's ready to go as soon as it's unpacked. Its whoppingly huge 20 GB internal hard drive comes preloaded with detailed road maps for all of the U.S. and the southern (most populated) section of Canada, so you won't have to fiddle with selecting map regions from a CD-ROM and having to transfer the data from a PC. If you keep your addresses on a PDA with IrDA capabilities then you'll enjoy the RoadMate's ability to upload the addresses wirelessly and point you right to your destination. In fact each of the 3 profiles that the unit keeps track of is allotted space for 100 addresses, making a total of 300 addresses available. Of course the most important address, home, can always be accessed with just a few clicks and from any menu and the RoadMate 700 will guide you back with ease.
If you are planning on using the RoadMate 700 with an older car--make sure it has a cigarette lighter power adapter, or leave enough time to charge it up in your hotel room or office with the supplied AC power cord. This also means that you won't be able to use the RoadMate 700 as a handheld device outside of your car. As for mounting, the included suction cup windshield mounting hardware is quite easy to use and allows you to mount the unit on any glass surface in your car. The RoadMate unit easily clips into the provided windshield bracket and can be tilted and turned with it's adjustable arm so you can see it easily and safely while you navigate. One of the benefits of the windshield mount is that because it's a suction cup mount you can move it in seconds from car to car with no problems at all. This newer suction cup based windshield mount is an improvement over the older three pronged mount that used to come with the RoadMate units. The older three-pronged mount was inserted into one of the middle air conditioning vents on your dash; the prongs are bendable to help you get the most secure fit, but never gave as secure of a fit as the windshield mount does.
But the RoadMate 700 shines as a virtual co-pilot. During our tests, it consistently acquired a satellite lock quickly (within a minute) and displayed our current position. From there, we searched through the vast library of POIs (points of interest) to find our destination (Seattle's baseball stadium). The RoadMate 700 has four different modes of getting you to your destination--shortest route, shortest distance, least use of freeways, and most freeways. Selecting shortest route got us to this venue using very practical directions that weren't far off from what we normally would choose.
If you're traveling to a destination that's not a widely known POI (such as a friend's home), no problem. You can enter the exact address into the RoadMate 700--using the touchscreen to tap letters and numbers into several search screens--to have it create a route. (You can also save 100 destinations in the address book.
The voice prompting was clear and audible (thanks to the two built-in speakers), and we were given ample warnings for upcoming turns. One of the RoadMate's nicest features is the Repeat button (which is smallish, but the only button found on the top of the device). If you miss a turn instruction, press it to repeat the previous voice prompt. Of the three view modes, True View was our favorite--it displays a 3D street-level view that helped us orient ourselves to our surroundings.
Overall, we were quite thrilled with the RoadMate 700's features: the color screen was bright and readable even in direct sunlight and the voice prompts were clear and not distracting to our driving. Best of all, the UI (user interface) screens are easy to navigate and--thanks to its large hard drive and map database--it's ready to go as soon as you open the box. While the price is not for the faint of heart, it will be a very valuable tool for many drivers (from business folk to parents) who need to get to unfamiliar locations quickly and smoothly. -- Agen G.N. Schmitz What's in the Box: RoadMate GPS, a windshield suction cup mount, a 12V DC vehicle power adapter, 110V AC power supply, USB data cable, universal cradle and a user's manual. I purchased this item because my old power cord broke. This was specifically listed as being compatible for my brand of GPS. However, I found that the plug is a little small for the power recepticle and it loses contact, causing the GPS to shut off. I also found that the plug that goes into my gps is also too small, also causing a problem with consistent power. I have had to tape them into place and wedge them in order to use them. For the price, it's better than nothing, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I am going to start this review by saying, I love RAM mounts.. after getting this, and seeing the quality of the actual parts, I bought many more mounts and extensions. Some from amazon and some directly from RAM that amazon didnt carry. Everything in my car is going to be RAM mounted.. tomtom goLive 740, myTouch 3G slide, and a Sony vaio ux90 UMPC.
Now, the main reason I gave this 3 stars instead of 5 is.. my mirror now shakes like mad just driving down the street. So bad that I cant barely see what is going on at night because its just a bunch of big blurry light streaks. I have been looking at things and it appears that it is the mount part that you mount your mirror to, not the part where the mount attaches to the windshield. I am actually going to try to drill and tap the mirror mount from ford, so I can tighten it down with a set screw the same way the RAM mount tightens down.

I have Alk Technologies, PC Miler Navigator 430. It also uses NAVTEQ maps. It will still send me on truck restricted roads, happened to me today, and on very rare occasions, a low bridge. I'm trying to find out if the new Garmin GPS nuvi 465t for trucks uses NAVTEQ maps. If so, I wouldn't waste big money on these GPS's. I would just buy a cheap Tom Tom or Garmin, and read a map!!

Magellan RoadMate 3045 4.7-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan RoadMate 3045 4.7-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I boguht a Magellan 3045 in April and had its firmware updated in early September. It navigates well with a bright display, clear voice guidance and nice GUI. The focus would be mainly on the things that I have experienced and don't like and that could need improvements, since most reviews available on the net are positive. I had contacted Magellan support multiple times before the firmware update. The support had been responsive, but not really in any capacity to address a customer's concerns. With all said, I have used a few GPS and done readings on the net before purchasing it.
My driving is mainly local commuting.
Don't like:
1. The shining frame is an eye sore, particularly in sunny days.
2. The free traffic report comes with really annoying Ads (advertisements), not live coupons. I didn't realize what the Ad meant. The Ads are stored in the units. The original firmware display 4 to 5 Ads every 3 minutes. Since the rotating Ads are not live, they are the same again and again. Worse, Ads pop up even when not using the traffic module by turning off in the settings or running with the battery. The only way to turn the Ads off is by turning off the traffic report in the setting and resetting the unit. However, after the firmware update, Ads pop up in a similar way with few Ads each time (1 or 2), and seeming dependent on the traveling speed. The worst is the Ads can NOT be turned off any more. If the live traffic report is not used, the Ad display should be off. (I wonder if Ads would distract a driver to the extent to be considered unsafe.)
3. As the other comment, from time to time unpredictably, the display and physical street are out of sync by quite a bit. It has nothing to do with screen information/signal update. On multiple occasions, I stopped the car. The streets were behind me and the display indicated they were still ahead. The firmware update doesn't help. Although annoying, however in reality, it hasn't caused to miss a turn.
Would like:
1. The wide format screen is not optimal for car traveling forward. I would like to see more ahead than aside. Thus a more square-like display may make more sense.
2. There isn't a zoom-level indicator. It isn't easy to go back to a level that a person has been used to at different routes.
3. A (auto) zoom level settings for different driving environments would be nice, i.e. on high way (less zoom) or local routes (more zoom).
4. The turn auto-zoom is a great feature. However, it tends to zoom in to much. The coming turn is zoomed out and not visible till fairly late. By decreasing the zoom, it helps. The turn auto-zoom should keep the next turn on the display.

SEE 8-29-09 UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF REVIEW:
I recently purchased a Magellan Roadmate 1340. This is one of the first new releases by Magellan since they were acquired by MiTAC (parent company of MIO)
I am using the Magellan 1212 as a basis for comparison, since I have been using that for the past 3 months and been very pleased with it, other than some occasional routing quirks.
The 1340 is very similar, but does add some significant extra features and improvements, for relatively little price difference:
1) "One Touch" Favorites menu offers quick access to many of the most used features and shortcuts.
2) Customizable route method lets you instantly view and compare and select the shortest distance, fastest time, most use of freeways, or least use of freeways to customize your route.
3) The AAA TourBook is a nice addition that provides ratings and descriptions on AAA approved places to stay, play, dine, and save.
4) Several other features such as Highway Points of Interest have more conveniently positioned shortcut buttons.
5)A new "Highway Lane Assist Signs" feature show highway signs to point you in the right direction when approaching interchanges and exits, and ensure that you'll choose the correct lane well before your next turn.
That being said, the 1340 has 2 "glitches" that need to be corrected by Magellan:
First, in any kind of sunlight, the screen is very difficult to see! The 1212 is very visible in all kinds of light, but the 1340 almost seems as if there is some kind of coating on the screen that makes viewing very challenging in sunlight. I contacted Magellan support, and they indicated they were aware of this issue and would hopefully have a fix available at some point.
Second, of less importance but still a step down from the 1212 is the voice clarity on text to speech. When the voice announces the street names, the names are slightly "fuzzy" or "garbled". This is not a "deal breaker", but definitely does not have the excellent clarity of the 1212.
I tried 2 different units, and they both have the same problems in these 2 areas. In summary, I think the added features make the 1340 a better unit than the 1212, and an excellent value for the money. However, if these shortcomings could be corrected, it would be a GREAT unit!
UPDATE (5-19-09)

I contacted Magellan support about these issues a couple of times and they said they were aware of the issues and that hopefully a "fix" would be issued. Yesterday, a firmware update (to version 1.10) appeared on the Magellan website and I downloaded and installed it, thinking it was to correct the brightness and sound issues. However, I did not notice any difference in either problem, so I emailed Magellan support. They said that the update was to correct another issue, and did not address the brightness and sound problems. They acknowledged that "you are correct that there is a significant difference between" the 1340 and 1212, but could not tell me for sure when or if another update will be issued to correct these known problems!
UPDATE (8-28-09)
After it became apparent that Magellan was not going to do anything to correct the visibility and sound problems (which have also been stated by many others here and on other review sites), I decided to return the 1340 and go back to the Magellan 1212. True, the 1212 does not have some of the new features that the 1340 has, but to me, the screen brightness and very clear text to speech makes up for it! (There are also several features that I like better on the 1212 than on the 1340.) I got a recertified 1212 on another site for $65 (Dell just had it for $80) Then, there was a firmware update on Magellan's site.....and you can order the spring 2009 map update for just $10 shipping. So, for $75 total, I have a great GPS that is totally updated, and although lacking a few features, more than makes up for it in quality of performance!
I noticed that a couple of people indicated that they did not noticed the sunlight visibility problem. I cannot understand that, but when I got the 1212, I compared the 2 units side by side and the difference is VERY evident. Even in the shade, when I previously thought the 1340 was "OK", it had a much more faded, dull look than the 1212!

Magellan 4.7-Inch and 4.3-Inch GPS Leather Case Review

Magellan 4.7-Inch and 4.3-Inch GPS Leather Case

I purchased this case for use with my Magellan 1475T GPS unit. My GPS fit into the case perfectly and is sufficiently nondescript enough to be mistaken for a date book if accidently left in plain sight in a vehicle. The case is slender enough that when holding the GPS unit, it fits into my computer bag and does not take up a great deal of room. It has protected my GPS during several trips through the hands of airport-TSA inspectors and x-ray machines.
