Navman iCN 750 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

A major factor in my decision of which GPS receiver to purchase was the screen size. I wanted to be able to see the details, as I do not have the greatest eyesight. This unit has a four-inch diagonal screen. It is one of the largest in portables. Another factor is that my car, a 2006 Nissan 350Z has an opening in the dash for an in-dash GPS unit. When I purchased the vehicle, I could not see paying $1800 and did not ask whether it could be added at that time. I also must say that the Navman ICN750 fits perfectly in the opening at the very rear, which helps shade it from direct sunlight. This is good since the sun tends to wash out the screen a little bit. Still, it can be read in direct sunlight. I am not using the supplied mounting device, as it must be mounted on the dash, which would obscure the gauges and is not removable to be remounted elsewhere such as a second vehicle. I have emailed the company asking whether the suction mount was supposed to be supplied along with the sticky pad I received. I may not have received it because I live in southern California and it is illegal to mount anything to the windshield. Still, that should be my decision to make. I am uncertain as to how I will mount it in my vehicle. It sits well in the opening and has only fallen face down once. The opening is well lined and cannot damage anything.
Since I have only owned it for 5 days I have not used the unit very many times. I first used it to go to work which is about a 20-25 minute drive. The device took about three minutes to find my location with the satellites. If you power the unit off and later power it on in the same vicinity, it takes only seconds to find your location. The unit wanted me to take the freeway but since I much rather drive the coastal route; I ignored the third direction which was a right turn. I opted to go straight which would lead me to my normal route. After telling me to turn right for a second time, which I also ignored, it announced to continue straight. While continuing straight, I knew I would have to turn left as the street would end and I would have no choice but to turn. This might confuse someone who is not familiar with the area. The trip gets boring from this point until the roundabout, as I just have to continue on Pacific Coast Highway until I get to that location. Upon approaching the roundabout, the unit announces to take the third exit, which is correct. After the exit, the next announcement is to turn right. Now the announced right is a very rough road, very short but not one I like to drive on since there are so many pot holes so I ignored the direction. No problem, the unit simply announces the next right to turn on. It seems as though the unit calculates the first opportunity to make a turn, which is not always the best decision as I have stated previously. Now, I have to say that I had photographed my place of business so that I could see if the GPS could actually find it. Unfortunately, it sees the destination as the street I last drive on before the parking lot I need to turn into before parking. If I was not familiar with the area and there were many businesses as could be the case, I would be a bit confused. At least it got me to within 100 feet of my intended destination.
I find that the buttons on the touch screen to be not very intuitive however, they are not beyond comprehension as you can see with some poking around. The screen is very prone to fingerprints although not so annoying when the unit is on as when powered off. The prints wipe off easily. A PDA or other type of screen protector would help prevent this minor inconvenience.
The software would not load for me initially. I do not know why, although I suspect that there must be something that my firewall, antivirus, or other software must be trying to prevent its access to the internet. I just rebooted my laptop and the software came up with options of which aspects I wanted to load.
I like this GPS unit very much, although I have not had much experience with this type of item. It does not seem very difficult to use, the options are many, the screen is large enough for me and the price was reasonable. I would make this purchase again. If I can, I will update after some time and possibly, after I take my trip to Hawaii in November. Yes, it has maps that cover Hawaii.
Since my last writing, I have contacted Navman about the suction mount device and have received no response. I am very disappointed. Customer service is very important to me. Still, I am pleased with the gps unit.

Navman iCN 510 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (West Coast and Southwest Regions) Review

After reading several reviews of the Euro version, I decided to purchase the US version when it came out. Compared it against the similar featured: Garmin Quest (smaller screen), Magellan Roadmate 300 (no battery), and the Tom Tom Go (more expensive). Have found the satellite acquistion is excellent and the displayed map good. Mine has a minor hardware glitch in that the volume wheel does not work. My major complaint is the software (SmartST Version 3.0) which I consider full of bugs. Often the voice prompts & map visual directions are at odds with each other; attempting to program off a City's Zone (must be the Euro Zip code?) is worthless & confusing so should be deleted from US edition software; unit periodically just freezes & locks up which requires a reboot to clear. Otherwise, once Navman fixes the software this will be a sweet little unit.

Navman iCN 510 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Navman iCN 510 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this NAVMAN icn510 at a different online retailer for $350 (starts with outpost. something :-). I generally make my purchases at Amazon.com - but this time Amazon.com could not beat the price I got for this gadget. I also usually rely on Amazon.com to read reviews of a product. Since I have been helped by other peoples reviews before, I thought it is my time to pay back. Hence I am writing this one. This is my first ever review. So please bear with me if I do not do a good job of it.
Please also buy a minimum of 512MB SD or MMC card. I already had a 512MB SD card. I was able to install about 7 states before it filled up (Texas alone is approx 100MB!). So make sure you buy an SD card with this purchase. I would recommend 1GB. But that is your call. After I unpacked the receiver, I then let it charge for about 2 hours - before the green light came on indicating that it was fully charged. Then I installed the Navman Desktop software on my PC and then when it asked me to connect the iCN510, it was able to communicate with it with no problems. Remember to turn on the power (by sliding the Battery Switch) on the back of the device with the stylus before you plug it to your PC. Then I updated the Desktop and the iCN510 software with the latest patches from Navman's web site. Loading of the maps were slow - it takes approx. 5-10 minutes per map - so my advice is, you select all the maps that you want installed, then press copy to SD card and go do something else. Usually I have seen on my cameras and camcorders if you have the screen turned out, it drains the batteries pretty quickly. It was not the case here. After about 3 hours of usage - with the Display turned on - I noticed that batteries were about 65% full. I was impressed with that. During the installation, the Display screen was on all the time - with an USB connection animation. You do not see any map loading status updates on the device - only on your Desktops. After the installation, while inside the house itself, it was able to receive the GPS satellite signals and showed my location. That was good too. Voice is loud and clear. Although this is supposed to be a touchscreen device, a number of items on the screen does not respond to the stylus. You have to use its circular wheel to navigate and press the center of the circular wheel to get it to work as Enter/Return button. It also comes with all accessories you need to mount in the car along with car charger. It comes with a quick reference guide. But a detailed user manual is only available as a PDF. You may print one out at your discretion.
Here is the reason why I am giving this device 3 stars instead of 5. I purchased this product in December 2004. The maps on this device is dated March 2003. Called Customer service - which by the way will take you directly to voice mail where you would leave a voice mail. I did and I did not expect to hear from them. But 30 minutes later somebody did call back. When I talked to him, he said NAVMAN does not have the latest maps for this device. And even when it comes out, you will have to pay to get the latest maps on it. What the .....??? That was very disappointing. He said it will be atleast 8-12 months before they release their next updates. He understood my point but said he was helpless and could not change company's policies. I implored him to let his supervisors or anybody higher up that that is wrong. He said he will. So, I am looking at another $99 to get the updates. That was not good news. So beware of this before you buy this product. You also cannot register the product. I asked the customer rep. to see if I can register so that I may receive a discount coupon when I get ready to update the software. He said they discontinued the registration process. And that there are no plans to get customers data into their database.
But the fact is I paid $350 - which is pretty cheap. That is why I am seriously considering not sending this back. Otherwise it would have been returned by now.

Navman Navigation iCN 630 2-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Navman Navigation iCN 630 2-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

(More customer reviews)
In general this works very well. The maps in my area (middle of nowhere KY) look like they were created from current and planned roads from 1980. Any road less than 10 years old is not included and many never built roads are included.
Pros:
1) Signal aquirement is very fast.
2) Re-routing is very fast.
3) Audible directions are good.
4) Display is excellent.
Cons:
1) Maps only come in regions of 1/2 - 4 states (about 35 Mb each) and can not be broken up. Therefore the 64 Mb of data storage can not be efficiently used (you can generally only fit 1 region on the unit at a time). If you live on the edge of a region then you may find yourself forced to purchase a SD media card for programming.
2) There are no base maps (Interstates or Highways). If a region is not loaded then there are no roads!
3) You can not store a "point". You can store a street to a range of addresses. It claims I have reached my destination 2/3rds of a block before I get home.
4) It will instruct you to "bear right" when the road you are on goes from 2 lanes to 4 lanes. When there happens to be an intersection there it is easy to make a mistake.
5) It does not report elevation.
6) You can only select one piece of optional information on the screen (Direction N-NW-W-SW..., Speed, Distance to Destination, Time, ETA, Distance to turn)
7) If you don't have a specific destination programmed then the display is limited to North up display. You also lose the option to select any of the optional information.
8) No batteries - this could be a handheld but only if you want to build your own battery case. This is not as big of a deal when you consider that it does not appear that it is designed to work when you get off of a recognized street.
Overall I like this. Investing in a 256 Mb SD card seems wise if not even a necessity. I have hopes that some of the CONS will be addressed through upgrades someday...
