(More customer reviews)It's not so bad that I'll send it back, but I wouldn't buy another one. There were three items in this package, so I'll discuss them separately:
First, the charger. It won't work in all vehicles. I discovered that there is a slight difference in the shape of a true cigarette lighter socket and the 12 volt round sockets most cars come with now. This charger works in the cigarette lighter of my GM pickup truck but not the 12 volt socket on the same vehicle. It won't work in either of the 12 volt power outlets in my Subaru. In constrast, the orginal charger for my GPS, the charger for my cell phone, and the charger for my mp3 player all work in the Subaru. The cord is shorter than the original cord which came with my device. Also, the cord plugs straight in instead of coming out at a right angle, as the original device cord did. The straight plug means I'd have to mount the suction cup an inch or so higher on the windshield. That, combined with the shorter cord, means that the cord was stretched across the controls to my in-dash CD player. Very annoying.
Next, the windshield mount. It's ok, but I don't love it. The clip attaching the gooseneck to the GPS kind of works with my Tomtom Go 630, but it's a Mickey Mouse arrangement of one not quite right adapter slid into another not quite right adapter. The swivel joint attaching the adapter to the gooseneck tightens and loosens with a screw. The plus side of this is that the joint isn't going to move once you tighten it down. The minus is that you can't adjust it one handed. The joint also doesn't have quite the amount of flexibility I'd like. The suction cup holding the gooseneck to the window awesome. It attaches with a flip lever- easy to attach and very secure. The gooseneck wasn't all that great. It's very stiff, which makes it hard to position. The joint attaching the gooseneck to the suction cup is easily strained, and the device will vibrate forever after once you've loosened it up.
Finally, the Micro SD reader. I haven't had cause to use it yet, so I've no idea if it actually works. The whole thing is barely larger than someone's thumbnail; It looks like someone chopped the end off a standard USB cable and turned it into a keychain.

Design With a total weight of 5.1 ounces and slim measurements of 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.87 inches (WxHxD), the nuvi 350 is just right for the pocket or purse. A bright, 64,000-color display dominates the front of the device and a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels means that there's plenty of room for displaying map data and other elements of the device's interface. An SD memory card slot is provided for expansion software, such as a points of interest database, media files and electronic guides (see below). The flip-up antenna includes an MCX-type connector for connecting the unit to an external GPS antenna. Meanwhile, a powerful built-in speaker resides on the back of device. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you for to eight hours of battery life, depending on use. In addition to an AC charger, the unit also ships with a 12-volt power adapter for vehicle charging, as well as a windshield suction cup mount.
Fortunately, Garmin has made it easy to interface with the nuvi 350's 700 megabytes of onboard memory, thanks to "plug-and-play" USB mass storage support. Just plug the device into your computer's USB port and you've got instantaneous access to all the audio books, music, photos, supplemental maps and other data on the nuvi 350's internal and SD card memory.

Navigation The nuvi 350 is first and foremost a personal GPS device. Wherever you go -- in your car or on foot-- the device offers extremely accurate position data, thanks to a high-sensitivity integrated GPS receiver by SiRF and WAAS-enabled, 12-satellite reception. Combined with detailed maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico the nuvi 350 provides automatic routing, turn-by-turn voice directions, and touchscreen control-- making it easy to find your way anywhere. Plus, the unique "text-to-speech" feature calls out turns by street name, and you can choose from either 2D or 3D mapping perspectives when you're viewing your route on the display. Additionally, the nuvi 350 is compatible with Garmin's GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver*, which allows users to avoid traffic tie-ups by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route.

Tools for the Journey Navigation is just part of the journey, and the nuvi 350 is one of the first devices to recognize that. The built-in "Travel Kit" offers an MP3 player, an audio book player from Audible.com, a jpeg-format picture viewer, a world travel clock with time zones, a currency converter, a measurement converter, and a calculator.

In addition to the included travel tools, additional software add-ons are available, such as the Garmin Language Guide, with data provided by Oxford University Press. This software suite contains a multilingual word bank, phrase bank, and five bilingual dictionaries. The multilingual word bank and phrase bank supports nine languages and dialects, including American English, British English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, European Spanish, and Latin American Spanish. Now you can look up and translate more than 17,000 words or 20,000 phrases per language -- right in the palm of your hand. Through the unit's text-to-speech interface, users can get a spoken pronunciation of each entry in the word bank, along with gender and part of speech information.

Another useful add-on software package, the Garmin Travel Guide, is loaded with information provided by Marco Polo. These guides put in-depth travel information such as reviews and recommendations for restaurants, tourist attractions, and more at your fingertips. The software allows you to navigate to an address or search points of interest-- places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. The nuvi 350 automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way. The unit also audibly announces the name of upcoming streets-- letting you keep your eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. And if you stray off course, the nuvi 350 automatically calculates the quickest way to get back on track.

(More customer reviews)UPDATE: 20040807 Point-to-Point routing works great and, for the most part, finds reasonable routing paths on highways and major city streets. Take the pre-set locations with a grain of salt since the pre-sets (sometimes) seem to show a general location of a landmark and not a precise point such as an entrance.
Best response time so far -- 8 satellites located in about 3 seconds while sitting in a parking lot at Muir Woods on Mt Tamalpias, CA.

This is the coolest gadget I've used in a long time!
Setup was simple - just follow the onscreen instructions and soon the unit will be searching for satellites and locking onto your location. From my bedroom window (house is on a hill) the Meridian Color was able to find 5 satellites within a couple of minutes and then keep the signal as I moved to the other side of the house to my office. Very impressive.
As far as the MapSend software goes, it loaded fine and quickly found the COM port that had the GPS unit attached. The only tricky spot was having to upgrade the firmware on the GPS unit itself since the pre-loaded version was 3.4x and the upgrade was 5.1x. The instructions provided on the upgrade CD-ROM didn't match the software setup at all.
Fortunately the software has limited options so it wasn't difficult to figure out (Go to UPLOAD and select Program Code Only making sure that the unit is on and has a fresh set of batteries installed. Then find the right .hex file for your GPS unit that's on the CD-ROM provided.) Don't freak, just read the instruction sheets before trying to do the upgrade.
Anyway, the unit appears to be working great. The color screen is terrific and has a High/Low setting (hold the PWR button down a few seconds) to save on battery life.
The unit also insists that only one mapping image can uploaded into the unit at a time. Not good if you want to visit more than 1 region over a period of time. The trick is to "pretend" you're uploading a region but have the GPS receiver turned off or disconnected. Proceed with the map preparation until the software says it can't find your unit then cancel out. Go find the .img files in the Program Files/Magellan/MapSend DirectRoute NA/Export/Images directory and then copy them to your SD card using Windows Explorer just as you would any other file. Sounds complicated but it's really just a basic file transfer.
After the files have transferred, stick the SD card back in and power up. The maps can be found by pressing MENU/CARD UTILITIES/CHANGE MAP.
Unfortunately, it's the battery life that's the reason this GPSR gets only 4 stars and not 5. This unit is a battery hog! If you use the color screen on high don't expect more than 6 hours per set of batteries.
Because of this I've ordered a separate 12v cigarette lighter power cable for the car and will keep the power/data cable for home use. The cable only comes with a 12v cigarette plug so I've also purchased a 110v to 12v adapter so that I can use household current. I also bought a swivel mount to use at home as a cradle -- no need to use the attachment screw on the connector and the unit is upright and viewable. Extra stuff to clutter my desk but it should save me from a lot of aggravation.
Overall the Magellan Meridian Color appears to be a great GPS receiver and the point-to-point routing features for use in the car (MapSend DirectRoute software comes with the Traveler's Pack bundle) is terrific. The expandable standard SD card capability is a feature only Magellan seems to have (Garmin, are you listening?) and that, along with the color screen, should be reason enough to get this snazzy little unit.

National Geographic TOPO Alaska Map CD-ROM (Windows) Review

(More customer reviews)As a proud owner of a Garmin Legend, I searched for the perfect complementary mapping software. I wanted/needed a product to help plan personal backpacking trips as well as assist me with work and school research projects which have me wandering about the Alaskan backcountry. I spent weeks reviewing many products and eventually narrowed them all down to two: National Geographic's TOPO! Alaska (NGTA!) and Garmin's MapSource Topo USA. Finally, thanks in large part to Amazon.com's customers' review of MapSource TOPO USA, I decided to buy NGTA! and have been thrilled with the product ever since. Some of my highlights are listed below:
Installation is a breeze and learning to use the basic functions is fairly intuitive. Plotting waypoints and routes is straightforward. The ability to construct an elevation profile of any route you design is a wonderful feature and helps immensely with planning trips. Downloading waypoints and routes from my laptop to my Garmin was surprisingly easy (this coming from a slowly recovering technophobe). Uploading waypoints and routes that I had created while in the field to the software allows me to see, on a much larger scale, where I had traveled.
Some of the more advanced features, however, may require a quick search of the Adobe PDF Instruction manual. For example, with NGT!, you can attach digital pictures and notes to your map which is a phenominal feature if you like to share your outing with friends/family/club members. Speaking of sharing your trips, National Geographic also has a website dedicated to the TOPO! Series products. On this website you can upload trips you have taken, and these will be posted on the site for others to download. You can of course download posted trips from other donors- complete with waypoints and routes. It really is a cool way to obtain "ready-to-go" trips for your GPS. As a matter of fact, the last time I checked, some ambitious soul had waypointed and routed most of the Northern California section of the PCT. Wow.
The software also allows you to print out maps at various scales. The maps themselves are sharp and clear. And since the NGT! maps are digital and seamless, you no longer have to carry multiple paper maps when your destination just happens to be located on the edge of the traditional USGS paper maps. NGT! allows you to select the size, scale and location of the print area which means you can put your destination or area of interest smack dab in the middle of your print out and be good to go.
At the time of this writing, Amazon.com had not listed or described the features of this particular product. However, it shares the same features as the other TOPO state products. But keep in mind, that Amazon's features listing is extremely concise. For a more complete list of features, check out NG's website.
In general, this product has exceeded my expectations in many ways and because of its versatility and ease of use I continue to find new and fun ways to use it.

(More customer reviews)I bought this product for hikes and to guide me in navigating rivers. Only very major roads are named so I can't use this very easily to calculate my route there. Most roads are there but they just vanish at some points and reappear in others. Using a real topo map it is immediately obvious that these same roads do not dissapear and in fact continue on their course uninteruppted like a road should. The elevations and detail are very course. No trails are shown. I am not very happy I bought this product and am going to look into the roads and recreation to see if it does a better job. FYI I bought this to use with my Etrex Legend which I think is just great.

Garmin's United States TOPO MapSource CD-ROM is similar to U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000-scale topographic paper maps. It includes trip and waypoint management functions that allow you to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS units (excluding the GPS 100 family and panel-mount aviation units). With MapSource, you can view highways, roads, hiking trails, snowmobile trails, backwoods trails, elevation contours, point and summit elevations, some bathymetric contours, geographic names, churches, and schools. Shoreline detail is included for lakes, reservoirs, small bodies of water, waterways, rivers, and streams. (More customer reviews)I got this as a replacement for the original adapter that I left by accident in a rental car. It works and I like the coiled cable but that's about all I can say about it. Now for the things I don't like.
Foremost, the end that plugs into the outlet is very large and clumsy. I have a '06 Subaru Legacy and it interferes with my access to controls and dashboard. It is difficult to grab the gear shift when it's in park and the adapter is plugged in. I imagine that it would be more clumsy in some cars and less in others but I view this as a major design flaw. If I had known about this beforehand, I probably wouldn't have bought it.
The other design flaw is the little blue light on the charger that shows power is flowing. That seems like a nice feature but I don't think the folks who designed it thought it through well enough. The light is very bright for night driving and too distracting. Again, it might depend on the your access to the outlet but my light is almost pointed straight at the driver.
I do not recommend this product to other buyers. I miss the original charger!

(More customer reviews)Wow. This is software is amazingly detailed and simplistic to use. The problem is, you can't use very much of it if you are an eTrex Legend user. The Legend only comes with 8mb of memory and just a couple of counties in Colorado can consume that much memory.
Had I known these maps would take up so much memory I would have opted for a different eTrex to one that was expandable.
I will say however, that this map is right on with detail and street maps. I was amazed at how much information this map has like local ponds, lakes, shopping centers etc.
Really sweet program, just not as efficient for my Legend as I would have hoped.

Garmin Roads and Recreation Canada Map CD-ROM (Windows) Review

(More customer reviews)The fact that "all of Canada" is packed onto one CD should set off warning bells right away. This cd is certainly required for anyone with one of Garmin's "MAP" GPS's but don't expect to get the same level of detail available for the US.
There is metro info available for several large cities and you can have full functionality for address lookup and points of interest; however, for everything smaller than Ottawa you are out of luck...
Road detail goes down to the level of paved county roads and in some areas dirt roads as well but this leaves an awful lot of detail that you simply won't have available. Waterways are also available but again, the level of shoreline detail leaves a lot to be desired for most activities such as canoeing.
Hopefully Garmin will partner with a few more map-making companies from Canada and get a lot better information. I suspect that a proper job will require many CD's for each province much like SoftMap.
The software on the disk (MapSource) is rather low-level as well. You have very limited ability to do anything in here and you have extremely limited options for exporting the data as well. I'd suggest spending a few dollars on GPS Utility which is far superior for actually using your mapping GPS as it was intended.

(More customer reviews)Bought the GPS on Jan 14th 09. I did realize that I would get a unit that was repacked, maybe even used but fully functional. That I only get 6 months guarantee is mentioned in the description.
What I did NOT know at this point - and what is certainly not mentioned in the description - is the fact that TomTom does not give Latest Map Guarantee (LMG) on refurbished units! The LMG is a nice feature that (AFAIK) goes with every unit and gives you the opportunity to update the installed maps for free in the 30 days after purchase.
That means that you get the newest map for free in case right after your purchase a new map is released by TomTom, which is normally the case every 3 months.
This you do NOT get with the refurbished units. OK, I would accept that when the maps that I got with the unit would be fairly new. What I got are maps from spring 2008! And after talking to TomTom Support I realized that it is a game of luck what versions may come with the device, depending alone on the time when the unit was refurbished.
The feature I was looking forward to was Active Lane Guidance(ALG). I'm driving up and down I-95 and I have not yet seen a single ALG image! So the map version is pretty useless to me. The coverage with ALG surely gets better with every map version, ergo: by new maps.
The new maps will cost you at the moment 110$ for North America and another 160$ for Central and Western Europe.
Unit cost me 289 add both maps and you are at 559$.
New units sell currently for around 400$.
Think about it. Does that make sense?
BTW: Calling TomTom Support didn't change a thing: "...yes, no, very sorry, but no, no LMG on refurbished units..."

TomTom GO 930 REFURB 4.3 Inch GPS Navigator. If you're looking for the ultimate portable GPS navigator, you've got to consider the 930 series. TomTom's 2008 flagship models bring all of their technological advancements together with ease of use and a sleek design to present a severely cool device. For a couple of year's now, TomTom's been driving forward community-driven navigation features. Navman iCN 750 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)A major factor in my decision of which GPS receiver to purchase was the screen size. I wanted to be able to see the details, as I do not have the greatest eyesight. This unit has a four-inch diagonal screen. It is one of the largest in portables. Another factor is that my car, a 2006 Nissan 350Z has an opening in the dash for an in-dash GPS unit. When I purchased the vehicle, I could not see paying $1800 and did not ask whether it could be added at that time. I also must say that the Navman ICN750 fits perfectly in the opening at the very rear, which helps shade it from direct sunlight. This is good since the sun tends to wash out the screen a little bit. Still, it can be read in direct sunlight. I am not using the supplied mounting device, as it must be mounted on the dash, which would obscure the gauges and is not removable to be remounted elsewhere such as a second vehicle. I have emailed the company asking whether the suction mount was supposed to be supplied along with the sticky pad I received. I may not have received it because I live in southern California and it is illegal to mount anything to the windshield. Still, that should be my decision to make. I am uncertain as to how I will mount it in my vehicle. It sits well in the opening and has only fallen face down once. The opening is well lined and cannot damage anything.
Since I have only owned it for 5 days I have not used the unit very many times. I first used it to go to work which is about a 20-25 minute drive. The device took about three minutes to find my location with the satellites. If you power the unit off and later power it on in the same vicinity, it takes only seconds to find your location. The unit wanted me to take the freeway but since I much rather drive the coastal route; I ignored the third direction which was a right turn. I opted to go straight which would lead me to my normal route. After telling me to turn right for a second time, which I also ignored, it announced to continue straight. While continuing straight, I knew I would have to turn left as the street would end and I would have no choice but to turn. This might confuse someone who is not familiar with the area. The trip gets boring from this point until the roundabout, as I just have to continue on Pacific Coast Highway until I get to that location. Upon approaching the roundabout, the unit announces to take the third exit, which is correct. After the exit, the next announcement is to turn right. Now the announced right is a very rough road, very short but not one I like to drive on since there are so many pot holes so I ignored the direction. No problem, the unit simply announces the next right to turn on. It seems as though the unit calculates the first opportunity to make a turn, which is not always the best decision as I have stated previously. Now, I have to say that I had photographed my place of business so that I could see if the GPS could actually find it. Unfortunately, it sees the destination as the street I last drive on before the parking lot I need to turn into before parking. If I was not familiar with the area and there were many businesses as could be the case, I would be a bit confused. At least it got me to within 100 feet of my intended destination.
I find that the buttons on the touch screen to be not very intuitive however, they are not beyond comprehension as you can see with some poking around. The screen is very prone to fingerprints although not so annoying when the unit is on as when powered off. The prints wipe off easily. A PDA or other type of screen protector would help prevent this minor inconvenience.
The software would not load for me initially. I do not know why, although I suspect that there must be something that my firewall, antivirus, or other software must be trying to prevent its access to the internet. I just rebooted my laptop and the software came up with options of which aspects I wanted to load.
I like this GPS unit very much, although I have not had much experience with this type of item. It does not seem very difficult to use, the options are many, the screen is large enough for me and the price was reasonable. I would make this purchase again. If I can, I will update after some time and possibly, after I take my trip to Hawaii in November. Yes, it has maps that cover Hawaii.
Since my last writing, I have contacted Navman about the suction mount device and have received no response. I am very disappointed. Customer service is very important to me. Still, I am pleased with the gps unit.

Nortech Navigator 3.5" TouchScreen Car Mobile GPS System Review

(More customer reviews)Bought this at Sam's Club for $279. It works well as a basic GPS and has what I would call a Garmin touch screen interface. The 3.5 inch screen is good, battery life seemed good and, overall, the unit functioned well. In 2 days of usage I found issues in the following areas that caused me to return the unit.
1. The 3.5" screen was just too small for my old eyes.
2. Unit did not have up-to-date maps or POIs. Thats not a major thing, EXCEPT, there appears to be no way to update them.
3. There is an SD card slot but no method to make the unit read it.
4. It comes with a USB cable but no drivers. My PC would see the device and a second or two later disconnect it.
5. There is no support available on the unit. I searched for online support but could only find that it is made by Sunjoy in China and is supported in the US by Ferro Works in Steubenville, OH. I could find no online support site or number for Ferro Works.
6. On a cold start, unit was slow in finding satelites, sometimes taking up to 5 minutes. Once found, it stayed locked on pretty well.
7. The suction cup mount worked very well on the windscreen but I wanted the unit to sit on the top of my dash. The mount would not adjust to allow a proper viewing angle on the flat dash.
8. Warranty is only 90 days. Sam's will sell you an extended warranty for extra cost.
9. Unit did initial route calculation pretty fast but occasionally got hung up recalculating and had to be reset. Also displayed a fatal error twice in a single day. Had to be reset to clear the error.
10. Soft keyboard is in ABC sequence instead of QWERTY.
11. Voice guidance often chatty with needless instructins such as "keep right" repeatedly on a long straight road with small crossroads. Often said "keep right" when it should have said "turn right".
Overall, providing that a way to update Maps and/or POIs becomes availble, this is a pretty good unit. It just did not serve my purposes at this time. I am going to a larger screen with a company that provides online updates.

Navigon 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)So far I am REALLY happy with the Navigon 2200t. I kept going back and forth between the 2200t and the 7200t. Although the 4.2" widescreen on the 7200t is nice I didn't need the bluetooth capability since my car already has it.
The 3.5" screen on the 2200t is plenty large and easy to read and type on. It would be nice if it had a QWERTY keyboard onscreen but the keyboard is intelligent only displaying relevant keys. I had no problem typing my destinations error free.
One of the complaints I read about past Navigon units was slow performance for GPS acquision, routing, and the menu system. That issue has absolutely been resolved with the new Navigon line. The menus are quick and the GPS locks on almost instantly. The traffic features are nice to have especially here in Atlanta. The speaker is surprisingly loud and clear when speaking the directions.
The reality view is a really nice feature when navigating complicated highway junctions and was one of the reasons I went with Navigon. Although I just received the unit I am very pleased with the build quality, performance, and routing so far. Its really a great deal considering similiar features are hundreds of dollars more with TomTom and Garmin units.
My only complaint would be the directions included in the box are pretty poor (just a quick start guide). I had to get on the Navigon website to download the full instructions. Not a big deal though.
Overall I am very happy so far and highly recommend the Navigon 2200t.

(More customer reviews)Owning a TomTom here in the States, I wanted to have a GPS with me for travel in Europe. Jensen was the only brand available to me for purchase in the US that had European Maps imbedded. In 14 days I drove across France four times in different directions with never a mis-step. My French wife experienced stress free travel to places she had never seen and never would have attemped to traverse without "Mr. Jensen" as our guide. Flexibility in programming route sensitivity was invaluable as was the instant "route recalculation" update. Most days I programmed in using roads that were not on any maps and the joy of discovery was non-stop. The shortest route with the maximum enjoyment. It is likely I would have logged half the distance traveled while at risk of an accident, without it.

(More customer reviews)I have other Arkon mounting products, so I thought that this would perform just as well. I have it connected properly, but my Magellan 5045 bounces around like crazy under normal driving conditions. For whatever reason, they decided to make this mount more narrow than the one that typically comes with the newer Magellan GPS units. That combined with it not snapping into the unit securely, makes this thing a terrible choice.
Fortunately, I realized that the windshield mount that comes with the Magellan 5045 can be disassembled, leaving you with just the part that snaps onto the ball joint. Even though it's not locked into the ball joint with a plastic nut, it still makes a strong hold and doesn't wobble at all.
