Nextar W3-01 3.5-Inch Touch Screen GPS Vehicle Navigator Review

Nextar W3-01 3.5-Inch Touch Screen GPS Vehicle Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this recently, knowing nothing about any GPS models and the differences between them. I was attracted by the low price and decided I would take a chance. If it didn't work well, I would simply return it within the 30 days.
It didn't take long for the unit to establish my location (home). Figuring out how to use it took less than 10 minutes. Entering destination information is easy, simply tapping on the screen, and the unit allows you to store favorite locations. Voice instructions are clear and easy to follow and there have been no misdirections. Amongst a number of cool features, I like the fact that you can do a "demo" run - sort of like a trial run of the journey before driving - very cool! So far, no problems at all and I wish I had bought one earlier, instead of trying to follow printed MapQuest directions. I would like to come back and rereview once I have used this for longer.
One reason I have not given this 5 stars at this time, is that the mounting unit (which for some reason does not match the picture in the instructions) is a little short, which makes positioning in the car a little challenging. Not enough of a problem to bother me though.
Also a little troubling, is sometimes it doesn't recognize a street name, which means that you have to either be familiar with the area or experiment a little to help the unit pinpoint the exact location. I can do this in the state where I live. Not sure I could do this in other states though.
Overall, so far so good and, as it hasn't got me lost yet, I am very satisfied with performance and price.

The navigator is also notably versatile, with both 2D and 3D viewing modes, along with a night mode feature that adds light to the screen for easier viewing. And should you make a wrong turn or take a detour, the navigator automatically recalculates the route and gives you new directions.

Nextar X3-03 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Nextar X3-03 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Nextar x3-03 is probably the best buy out there because it does include an a/c and d/c adapter and a cover along with free map upgrades when available - so they claim. The ac adapter is a benefit for outside sales people (real estate agents) so that you can program all your stops before hand. I recently purchase the tomtom and navignon and found them to be very useless especially the navignon because of the voice directions. It gave me about 5 steps when entering and leaving a ramp from the highway and I felt it would be really confusing if I did not know where I was. In addition to that, the navignon for some reason was trying to reroute me down streets I already knew they were dead ends. I return the tomtom and navignon back to staples and kept my Nextar.
The beauty of the nextar is in its simplicity. The prompts are at the right time without added conversation! It is very easy to select your your next location within seconds while at a traffic light - or rather I should say parked in a safe location. Entering address information was much easier than the others because of the simple predictive text which looks up streets as you are typing them in like Pac for pacific - the navigon would pull up wolfpack once you starting typing and that to me was no useful.
If you need a tool, the nextar is it, if you need a toy and graphics and more of what you don't need and less of what you really need, then I would certainly go back and purchase the tomtom and navigon. The sound and graphics are pretty cool.
The downside, I do not believe there is any quality control and be prepared to send a unit or two back. I originally purchased mine at Kmart which has a very good return policy, problem was, their inventory is light and they have been out of them for 6 weeks. So now I have purchased from Amazon because their exchage policy is just as easy.
Be aware that the battery does not last overnight as I believe the unit is always in standby mode even when you thought it was off.
Nextar is very up front about their problems and issues which you can read about in the support section [...]
I hope this helps anyone trying to make a decision. Best bet is to buy all 4 brands from a place you know they can be returned and try them all out for a day to see which one fits your needs.

Nextar X4-T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with MP3 Player Review

Nextar X4-T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my second NEXTAR GPS. Upgrading from the X3(3" screen) instead of buying new glasses.
This brand has several superior features I have not seen in other brands.
Additionally it does not have a load of 'commercial' materials as the Garmens do from AAA.
+Voice to text. The GPS announces route changes/turns and includes the street name route you'll be turning onto. No need to look away from the road when the GPS says turn to identify what road/route you're turning onto.
+You can create an itinerary for your trip if you want to go a specific route you already know.
+ You can identify a "current location" and then save it to favorites.
+ An additional feature is available when looking up destinations by address, or on any location added to favorites. After saving the address/location to favorites you can EDIT the address/location title, and add a title you will be more familiar with than just the address.
The voice on this model is clear and the volume is easily controlled by a volume knob on the side of the unit, no need to go into the set up.
The 4" screen has good resolution and color and routes appear to be up-to-date.
The map data is USA only and is on a 1GB SD card. I have not attempted to go on-line and research maps for Canada which I also want.
I have had the unit for about 1 month (May 8-08) and I am sure I will learn more about it but travel often by car and it has been great. It easily recalculates route directions if you fail to turn where directed (AS I HAVE) and also recalculates if you know a better road. When taking your own route it will often direct you to make a U-turn when possible, but it will eventually come around.
Needless to say I love this brand & model.

Nextar Q3 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Nextar Q3 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"WOW!
1.What a winner this "Q3" is. Fast and accurate acquiring satellite signals, even in my living room. Comes with AC AND DC adapters. My car accessory socket is ignition controlled and turns off when I am out of the car. I have to re-charge it in the house.2.I set up all my "Destinations' and "Favorites" in the house so I love that it has the AC adapter included.
3. It has an SD/MMC slot for playing MP3 music and talk I have on my PC. I transfer to the SD/MMC card and insert it into the "Q3" to listen. It may also play MP3 while navigating but I haven't yet been able to do both at the same time.
4.It fits very nicely into my shirt pocket so I can "Plan n Play" at the coffee shop.
5.Once I learned the "Menu tree" I can get around the menus pretty easily. Since this is my first experience with a GPS device and GPS Navigator I had a bit of a learning curve.
6.It comes with two books, one for the hardware showing how to install it and how to set it up. The other book is primarily for the software. It duplicates much of what is in the hardware book. My "Q3" screens look a lot different from the screens shown in the books. I don't know if my screens are the latest version or if the books show the latest version, but THEY ARE DIFFERENT. This difference made it more difficult to learn how to use it.
7.While just driving around the "Q3" was able to pinpoint my exact location including altitude. It offers North as a fixed display or it offers "heading" with North as it North moves around in relation to your heading. Just a tap on the "compass" toggles back and forth.
8.Displays are included to show 2D, and 3D in variations of perspective and depth. Very nice! It gives a feeling of "horizon" perspective.
9.I found the names of streets and roads were not as the actual street signs showed in many cases. It seems to prefer the US-# or the State Road #'s if known. Many local streets have "City" or "Town" names that are used locally. One US-64 is shown on the "Q3" as 'US64' but the street signs say "Four Seasons Blvd". IF I enter the name of this road, it tells me it doesn't exist. Street number can vary by a block or more in many instances. I suspect this is true of most GPS navigators. Updated maps usually come out every 1-3 years.
10. One point six million "POI's", points of interest still don't include MANY restaurants. etc. Some of our local schools, which are four years old, still are not listed under the included POI's.
11. If the "Q3" will save data to the SD/MMC card I have not found out how. If the "Q3" will download data to the "Q3 Flash Memory" from the SD/MMC card I have not yet found out how to do it.
12. Accessories and upgrades are listed on the NEXTAR website but are still not available online or from the supplier. BUT, I can see the potential of this little guy and I love it's size and accuracy.
14.If I have set a destination and am on the road, if I make a turn different from the Voice Instructed action it IMMEDIATELY RECALCULATED THE NEW PATH! within 10 seconds, and it is always correct in the instructions. Hard-drive based models are very very slow and not very often recalculating it AUTOMATICALLY without asking, But the "Q3" does it automatically, instantly!
15.Support gathered from the website is WAY BEHIND AND SLOW if non-existent! These are becoming hard to get because they are so popular they can't keep them on hand for sale. If you want one you'd better grab it NOW!
16. SUMMARY. i don't work for NEXTAR! I bought mine from HSN who is SOLD OUT at this time! It took me a week of many hours to learn what I do know about the "Q3", and suddenly I fell in love with it. If I need to know where I am at any given moment, it tells me, address, city, street, longitude, latitude, and elevation, and CHECK THIS OUT!
The SPEED indicator is more accurate than my speedometer! and it has an alarm that CAN tell me if exceed the speed limit or it I exceed a Preset Speed Limit of my own choosing.

I returned the competitors' GPS Navigators for refund , not accurate, too slow, can't acquire or maintain satellite readings.
NEXTAR Q3 IS HOT!"

I got this product two days ago. tested locally. Very accurate. I was using the same software on my PDA for a while(Iguidance). I am very happy with the software. It must be using iguidance 4.0 internally.
Fast startup. Fast route re-calculation. I got 6 satellites even inside my house. My son was holding it on the back seat while I was driving. It worked very well. Test to speech is very accurate (So far).
If you power of the unit using the Power button on the back, you will loose your settings. Plays mp3's ok. Even the internal speaker sounds not bad.
the only think lacking in this unit is blue tooth. Which I cant ask for it for the money I paid.

Maylong ML-500 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Maylong ML-500 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used GPS devices for a few years now. I have a handheld unit for hiking and geocaching, and a car unit. Both of these devices are by one of the Big Three GPS makers. My expectations for the Maylong ML-500 GPS were not high, as I believed a budget price and lack of name recognition signaled a lower quality unit.
Boy was I wrong.
Maylong ML-500:
PROS: excellent route selections, fast announcement of turns, Sleep mode, big screen, microSD expansion slot, slim depth, fast and strong satellite locking, Navteq map set.
CONS: confusing Date/Time selection, lackluster auto brightness adjustment, some unusual voice synthesis quirks. The cons are very minor.
The ML-500 GPS comes with a USB cable (it does charge via this cable, but would not with a different USB cable I tried, so be aware that the Maylong USB cable may be modified), a car charger, manual, and car suction mount/cradle. A stylus is included that slides into the bottom of the device. Very handy, as there is a touchscreen calibration function that will keep your screen aligned and this is best performed with the stylus. The box lists other accessories that are not included.
Input/output options include a USB port for charging (the car charger terminates in a USB mini-B connector), a microSD slot (for storing photos, music, ebooks, etc), a headphone connector, and reset button.
The ML-500 takes a few minutes to boot from a cold start. It is able to lock satellites indoors, which is always a noteworthy accomplishment. I locked 6 satellites in my living room. Now, I don't need to navigate anywhere while inside, but I do interpret this as a sign of a good quality of GPS chip.
The ML-500 has a big 5" LCD touchscreen. It is bright and sharp. The device is very thin, less than 1/2 in. in thickness. It has a good weighty feel, without being heavy.
The Main menu presents options for Media, Let's Go, and System.
Media provides utilities for viewing photos and videos, Ebook (.txt format), and Music.
System settings include Volume (also accessible from the main Navigation screen), Power (showing charge level), Backlight (increase/decrease, or auto adjust checkbox), Date Time, Language (vast number of languages offered), and System Info. (software versions, USB mode, and Calibration functions). Time can be obtained from the satellites, but my initial setting was off. Then, I set to the current time at my location. My arrival times were off, so I had to set to an hour earlier and then select the DST (Daylight Saving Time) checkbox. I'm still not sure that is all ok. Date/time setting is a bit muddled on this device.
Let's Go is your main navigation application. It takes a moment for this to load. Once loaded, you then can select to View Map (you can zoom out or in, drag the map to a new location, etc., very handy feature), Options (below), Let's Go (select again to start navigating), or Quit back to the Main menu.
Options include a toggle Walking/Vehicle mode, set Quick Nav category that lets you specify a type of destination you can get directions to from the Main navigation screen), Demo, Prompts (when the GPS verbally announces Speed Warning-sounds good but very annoying when on, Route Recalculation, Weak GPS Signal, GPS Not Found), and Spoken Names/Numbers/Both, Day/Night view (pleasant dark background for nighttime navigation), 2D/3D view, Map Browsing/GPS mode, Map Display options (select which icons appear on the Main navigation screen for quick toggles of various functions), GPS Info (very cool space-view of satellites locations and locks, altitude, and current long/lat coordinates), Select Map (different regions are loaded as needed), Units of Measure, Language, Time Settings, Look and Feel (skins [only 1 available], keyboard mode, day/night auto adjustment), Help (simple operating instructions and troubleshooting), and About (more software information and trademarks). There were no choices of different voices or car markers.
Some observations: Yes, there are 2 places to access time and language settings. I don't quite get this ... leads to some confusion. I found the auto adjust backlight to be disappointing as I transitioned from car to street. The screen was too dim to view easily at my original setting). I also found the Walking Mode to be less than useful ... as I arrived at my destination which the device announced, then had to find parking, then needed to be guided back to my destination, I switched to Walking mode and expected to be guided to it. I was not. I will need to investigate the use of this function further.
So how does the ML-500 work as a GPS? Simply, this is an excellent GPS unit. Compared to my Garmin 255WT, the Maylong announced turns more quickly, though it did not give long term directions (e.g., stay on this road for 10 miles). Recalculations were about the same in terms of the devices recovering from wrong turns. The Maylong chose more "major" highways for fastest route, and these were better selections in each case. Oddly, the Maylong tended to announce "St" as "Saint," however, this could be because the actual road name was followed by a W for West.
Totally coolest feature: when you press the Off button, you can choose Sleep or Turn Off. When you put the device to Sleep, it pretty much comes back on instantly to whatever screen you were on when you turned it off. Very handy, as the boot and application load times can take several minutes. Presumably, like with your computer, Sleep does consume power, so I would not choose it for long-term shutoffs, as you will likely come back to a dead battery.
As Maylong is something of a newer player, there is some question about receiving map updates. Any GPS should offer, at a minimum, one map update in the first year as a free support feature. This is competitive with other major players. Maylong should also consider a lifetime update option as well.
If you are in the market for a good value in a great performing GPS, you absolutely should consider Maylong. I found this unit to outperform a comparable Garmin GPS.

Nextar Q4-MD 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with 1-Year MSN Direct Service Included Review

Nextar Q4-MD 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with 1-Year MSN Direct Service Included
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
About this GPS, the navigation system itself is just like the Q4 that I bought before, it can connect to the satellite real quick and provide accurate route guide. Because I get used to the operating system of Nextar's Q4 already, for this product, what I am concern is the function of MSN Direct.
This unit comes with 1 year free MSN Direct service. It can tell you much useful live information, such as live traffic, gas price, news headline, local weather, and even the stock quotes. At the first, I am not sure if it can provide "real" live information about everything included in its service. Surprisingly, it does bring me the newest and correct information about the gas price and the live traffic report.........these two services are what I need the most. Through it, I get to drive to the Universal Studio on Sunday without sticking with the traffic on the freeway and find a Shell gas station with the lowest price for V-power gas. To me, these two practical services create a significant value for this GPS, not to mention that it offers lots more live information as well.
And for the most important of all, comparing to its price, the value it creates has greatly exceeded my expectations!

The Nextar Q4-MD GPS navigation system includes an easy-to-see 4.3-inch touch-screen display, built-in speaker, and voice-guided, turn-by-turn prompts for maps covering all 50 states as well as Canada. Nextar will feature the Q4-MD with a host of MSN Direct (www.msndirect.com) location based services free of charge for 12 months.

With the inclusion of MSN Direct, the Q4-MD not only gets users to their destination via the quickest, easiest route, but also provides a unique resource to a wide-range of information. MSN Direct expands navigation systems by offering relevant, timely, location-specific information.
With MSN Direct, the Q4-MD provides drivers with essential, up-to-the-minute traffic reports, current and three-day weather conditions for a local area or nationally, and handy gas-price comparisons for stations near the driver. It is also a conduit to news headlines, stock quotes, and a listing of local events. For instance, MSN Direct can look up box office times for current movies playing at local theaters and get you information on the latest sports events, music concerts and more.
The Nextar Q4-MD comes with a generous 4.3-inch TFT touch-screen display that provides large, clear, colorful images of maps from all 50 US states and Canada's 10 provinces and three territories. A special automatic night mode offers additional screen lighting for even easier-on-the-eye viewing. Voice-guided directions with turn-by-turn voice prompts are clearly audible through a built-in speaker. Text-to-speech technology clearly pronounces road names. Language support is provided for the three most spoken languages in the covered area: English, French, and Spanish.
The Nextar Q4-MD provides 1.6-million points of interest, including hotels, shopping centers, gas stations, and restaurants. Instant route recalculation is provided in case a driver misses a turn. Nextar X4B 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Nextar X4B 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first GPS. I wanted a unit with TTS and a 4.3" screen. I was looking at the TomTom 720 and the Garmin nuvi 750 when I saw the great price on this unit. I decided to take a chance on a unit costing much less than what I was planning to spend. (In fairness, the TomTom and Garmin have a few additional features like an FM transmitter.) So far, I have not regretted it.
The unit powers up and locks on to the satellites fairly quickly if you have a clear view of the sky. Setup and navigation are fairly straightforward. The onboard stylus is useful but you can use your finger as well. Nextar does not show as much info on the main navigation screen as some others (e.g. signal strength) but I haven't found that to be a problem. It does have a volume control on the side, which some more expensive units don't seem to provide. It comes with the usual complement of chargers and mounts.
The TTS feature works well and the voice is clear and unaccented. I do not have a Bluetooth phone so I am unable to comment on that capability. I will say that both the Nextar and Garmin manuals spend many pages on Bluetooth setup, so it certainly seems to be a technology that isn't plug-n-play yet.
I initially set up an itinerary for a trip from Austin to Pittsburgh. The Nextar came up with a better route than MS Streets & Trips. I was able to easily add stopovers and it recomputed the route fairly quickly. Although having "only" 1.6M POIs, I was able to find most of the hotels and restaurants I was interested in for the trip. I used it around town over the weekend and it responded well to real-time course changes when I took streets that weren't on the route. No lockups or reboots. The unit successfully navigated in and around Memphis and other cities and stops on the route. There were some mistakes, mostly in whether connecting roads were right or left turns. I'm sure this is due to mistakes in the Navteq maps and not anything peculiar to the Nextar.
On a trip to Long Beach the unit also worked well in navigating from the airport to the hotel and then to other POIs. It did have our hotel on the wrong side of the street but I'm sure that's an error in the map.
I loaded some MP3s onto a 1GB SD card and the MP3 player played them just fine. One glitch is that it doesn't have a shuffle mode. I hope that will be added in a later upgrade. I did not try to load/view pictures. A USB cable is provided but has no function yet as there is nothing on the Nextar website to update. The unit was built in July so there is probably little need as yet.
The manual could be better, especially for GPS newbies like me. It has taken some experimentation to figure out how the various features work.
All in all, I am very satisfied. It doesn't have all of the features of more expensive units, but it is a great value for a 4.3" unit with TTS. I lost the slip case and tried to contact Nextar support. After a week I have not had any response.

Nextar X3 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Nextar X3 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this GPS unit last week, and for an entry price range unit, I was really blown away by the performance and functionality of this unit. This unit only takes about 5 to 10 seconds to acquire satellites and locate my position, and I love the ability to select major road as a route option and the ability to navigate by higher level view or zoom in to local streets.
In the high level view, I really like that every street is named so I really know what's around me, and I can really see where I'm going. When I pull off route into a McDonald, the GPS recalculate my route in seconds when I get back on the road. I haven't tried out the MP3 player or the photo viewer yet, I am sure it work fine but I really don't need this unit for those function anyhow.
I've owned and use other navigation products from the Tom Tom One, to Mio C220, and even the Garmin Nuvi 360, I like this GPS unit the best. This product really exceed my expectation, so I highly recommend this product.

Nextar ME 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Nextar ME 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To be honest, the name Nexstar does not mean anything to me. The only reason I bought this GPS, because it runs iGO 8 navigation software. Anybody who is familiar with that piece of marvel knows what I am talking about. IGO 8 have won the second time the Vision Mobility Award of Excellence. They hold the "Best Navigation Software" title for two years in a row in Europe. That means something. So, what is this Nexstar ME do? Knowing iGO 8, I took a gamble. There is very little information about this "black sheep" GPS on the Internet. Even on the Nexstar homepage say almost nothing useful. The package came with all the necessary hardware pieces that are standard for today's GPS package. After turning the unit on, it scrolled through a very long fine print. Using my finger I touched to accept the agreement button and I found myself in a menu where I had a choice to go navigation, music, photos or to a setup area where you can fine-tune your unit, like time and date, brightness, volume, alignment etc. I picked navigation and the unit vent into loading mode. It took a long time to load up the navigation software. That indicated that the hardware must equipped with slower CPU. It runs CE 5.0 by the way, which is no surprise. The plus side was however, and I was a little bit surprised, when the application finally loaded up, the unit already hooked up with the navigation satellites. My previous experience with Mio P550, which was a PDA with navigation build in, - separate SiRF III chip, and also was running iGO 8, left me regularly waiting five or more minutes to find the satellites. So, this was good. Later, I found out that hooking up with the satellites is no problem for this unit and it is always full strength. As far as navigation goes, it is very stable, accurate and no sign of slow CPU. The interface is fantastic and joy to use the finger touch. There are two modes to pick, simple and advanced. The default is simple. Simple mode is OK, but want to learn and get into advance mode is better. The GPS voice is clear and loud, came as default. I have no problem to hear it even in my old noisy car. It does TTS (Text-To-Speech), but you need to pick that option in the voice setup. For those who wish to push the limit of this GPS, I am happy to announce it is also a "geeg heaven". Matter of hours I was able to add different languages and voices to the unit, and I am sure adding other maps, like countries of Europe are no problem either. Although on the Nexstar's website says, no other maps are available. Right. Interesting to know for example that iGO 8 has single-handedly the most accurate and detailed maps of Eastern Europe. Anyway, I think I will like this GPS. The fast satellite hookup, the marvelous interface, loud and clear voice, stable navigation are all good ones. There are really no negatives about this unit yet. Sure it is missing bluetooth and other fancy features like FM radio and transmission, but you always have to compromise performance, quality and price. For example this GPS have MP3 capabilities, but do I care? No. So, the question always is, what is important to you. Good luck.

Great GPS and a bonus rear view camera (color)... GPS function is easy to program and works great. Rearview camera needs to be adjusted to view as close to the rear bumper as possible... Had to make a special bracket to accomplish this.... now in my van I see 1 feet behind the rear bumper... I would recgomend this GPS and rearview camera to any one that has a VAN... Will be buying a second camera for use on my car....

This unit is ok but it's lack of built in POIs makes it not as usable as others. This brand of GPS cannot download POIs from usual internet sources like Tom Tom and Garmin can, so you are stuck with just what is already loaded, which isn't much. I was in the central valley of California looking for a Wal-Mart and the nearest one it showed me was in San Diego. I contacted the company and was told that downloading POI's from other sources would ruin the unit and void the warrenty. I was also told that the company has no real plans to offer it's own POI upgrade packages. I would spend the extra and get one that has more POI's.

Nextar M3 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

This little item offers map updating every 25 feet. It has a good response time if you drive within reasonable speed limits....lead footed speeders will find it to be a bit sluggish if they are driving over 80 m.p.h..
Make sure you download the ActiveSync program from the Microsoft Mobile website... this unit runs on Windows CE and you can do upgrades on it...or even hack it if you so desire.. AFTER the warranty period has expired!! Using ActiveSync you can make back-ups on you PC and edit routes, files and settings.
I have friends that use other GPS devices that have more "bells and whistles", some of which they have to pay to subscribe to. This is just a basic GPS. I WILL STILL USE MAPS! I probably always will. If you are planning a long trip with any of these units, use the "waypoint system" of navigation: break your trip up into sections and save them as favorites.
This device is great for when you are driving down a dark road in a storm and are having trouble reading the cross road name signs, or if you go out on a drive and get lost you can cue in HOME and that is where it will take you. NICE!!!
Upgrades to the maps should be available in April, 2009.
I paid $79.99 NEW and it came with 2 sets of holders for cars....I would not pay any more than that for ANY of these devices. I am rating this a four star item because I believe that the instructions could be improved and the corporate website support pages could be improved.
