Garmin Quest Deluxe 2.2-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin Quest Deluxe 2.2-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

After reading a couple of the previous reviews where people gave the Quest low ratings because they couldn't find anything, or couldn't tell where they were, all I can think of is that they didn't read the directions. The Quest came in two flavors - the Quest and Quest2. The difference was in the memory size. The Quest came with only 115MB of free memory while the Quest2 must have had at least 2GB.
The Quest comes preloaded with a "basemap" that shows the major cities and roads in the US/Canada, but does NOT show the details and "Points of Interest" (POI). As far as I can figure from the previous posts, that's ALL that was loaded. To use the Quest, you must install the "City Navigator" software on a PC. Once installed, you can then select portions of the map to "send" to the Quest. This loads the map details and POI's in the Quest for use. As stated, you can download a maximum of 115MB total which generally includes the information for several states (dependent on population density). While this may seem to be a hassle, generally you don't have to reload the information very often unless you're traveling. On the other hand, since the PC software has all the same information as the GPS, you can pre-plan your travels by saving places where you want to go as "waypoints", or even pre-plan entire routes and download them to the Quest along with the maps of the area. The Quest even has the ability to to sort multiple waypoints in one route for maximum efficiency. For example, let's say that you are planning some sightseeing/shopping - leaving from point home, traveling to several wayoints, then returning home. Put your "home" location as the Start and Finish, insert all of your intermediate stops as Vias, then have the Quest arrange the Vias for maximum efficiency. Not many GPSs will do this - even the City Navigator software won't. Another nice thing about having to download maps, is that you can update the PC software to a newer version, and when you download the maps you know you are getting the latest inforation. Also, you can install maps of different types (such as Bluewater or Topographical navigation) and use them in the Quest as well by purchasing the PC software from Garmin.
BTW - the difference between the Quest and Quest2 is that the Quest2 has ALL of the maps installed from the start - no cutting or downloading and uses a different version of software (NT version) to update.
As you can probably tell I have a Quest GPS. I purchased one when they first were released (2004) and have been VERY happy with it. I have a mount installed on my motorcycle with the unit connected to an Aux input for sound and have toured through a large portion of the West and West coast, parts of British Columbia as well as the East coast and Texas on the bike, in the car and/or camping in my truck. My Quest has been through rain, hail and dust and has never failed me yet. My parents had purchased one of the "inexpensive" (cheap) road GPSs, and asked me to help them use it. Compared to the Quest, the unit they purchased was a POS. I finally purchased a refurbished unit for about 1/5 the cost of my original Quest and gave it to them for use. I was impressed with the refurbed unit in that it looked as good as new, had the latest software from Garmin, and worked great. I highly recommend this product.

GARMIN 010-10503-00/ 02 Quest Friction Mount With Speaker Review

If you own a Quest (the mount part is unique to the Quest, there are other mounts that seem to use the same base) this is the solution to not using the windshield suction cup mount. Using suction cups on car windshields is illegal in CA, as Garmin points out, and this is the extra cost solution. You'd think Garmin might replace the suction cup in CA, but not so. I think Garmin might make a stick-on mount, but I am not ready to stick this into my car and advertise that there might be a GPS unit inside for the taking.
The base is a weighted rubbery thing, with three rubbery extensions (see ad's photo) with weighted blobs in the ends. All this makes is resistent to sliding on a reasonably flat and rough dashboard. Since the extension arms are flexible, it ought to handle contoured dashes to some degree. There is the question of what damage it might do to you in a rear impact collision. I have not yet had it slide, but I have kids who do not like high speed turns.
The GPS mount is a very short vertical and pretty rigid, which improves readability over the other Garmin weighted mount I tried [the portable friction mount plus auto mounting mount for eTrek plus the bicycle mount for Quest plus some fabrication work to get the cable from the Quest mount onto the bicycle mount]. It both pivots side to side and up and down so you are likely to find a compromise between being able to see it and reflections off of something bright. I have been putting it on the dash between the driver and passenger, out of the airbag paths. The short height allows the Quest to fit between the dash and the windshield. On a Honda CRV and a '95 Civic HB it has worked fine.
The only downsides I really have are that it is expensive (possibly because it includes the speaker/power supply as part of the unit), and there is still a bit of vibration, but only enough to be annoying.

I read lots of reviews and decided to go with a refurbished Quest-I just to save a buck, also, I ride motorcycles and from what I read, this one can be easily mounted on the bike or stick into my pocket too, so I ordered it on my B-Day and very pleased with it, it always put a big smile on my face when I hear "Arriving destination on right.."
I have only had it for a little over a month now and only used it in the local state, it already saved my time/gas twice big time...I will bring it to my mini-vacation this weekend to see how it goes...

GARMIN 010-10610-00 Quest Motorcycle Mount Review

Although a nice idea and the product seems to be well put together it would be nice if there was an explanation in the description that the full ability to mount this to a motorcycle is not included in the kit. Seems you need to seek out a universal bracket from an unknown location in order to use what you purchased...

Garmin Carrying Case for nuvi 295W Portable GPS Review

Garmin Carrying Case for nuvi 295W Portable GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this to go along with a Nuvi 295W that will be a Christmas gift this year. I was looking for a protective case that would fit the Nuvi 295W tightly with some padding. I decided against the Garmin 3.5-Inch Widescreen Carrying Case, which is the case recommended on Garmin's website, because there was a review saying that the 295W could fall out of it's open end. I thought this case would be better since it zips closed.
However, now that I have it, I realize that it is not a perfect fit for the Garmin Nuvi 295W. It is about twice as thick as that unit but the width and height are about right (might be a slightly tight fit width-wise). In fact, if you look up the product number for this case on Garmin's site, you will find that Garmin only lists their Quest and Quest 2 GPS units as "compatible products" for this case, not the Nuvi 295W! So, why has someone at Amazon decided to title the product listing as "Garmin Carrying Case for nuvi 295W Portable GPS"?
Depending on how much padding is on the inside of the case and whether you want to put anything else in it with the Nuvi, this could be an OK solution. I can't be sure yet because I haven't opened it due to the fact that it is intended as a gift and the fact that I am considering returning it.
UPDATE: I kept the case and the gift recipient is using it. The case IS twice as wide on the inside as the Nuvi 295W but it fits snugly enough in the other dimensions so that it doesn't move around too much. You can either add some additional padding or store something like a couple of microSDHC cards in the case with the Nuvi. The case is not ideal, but I still don't see a better option for a zippered case for the Nuvi 295W.
I'm glad to see that Amazon has updated the product description to reflect that this case is originally for the QUEST series.

This mount is awesome! I used it to go to Milwaukee on a '98 Electra Glide. The mount is rock soild and can be moved around to see the GPS great. I used my car plug-in to keep the GPS lit at night. Cheaper than the RAM mount site. Easy install. If you own a Quest and a motoycycle buy this mount!

Garmin Handlebar Mount for Quest (010-10507-00) Review

I bought this mount for the Garmin Quest. I use it on my '98 Harley Electra Glide. This mount work GREAT! I have it right on the handle bar and when the GPS is not mounted you can barely tell it's there. The GPS snaps into a holder that snaps onto the semi-permanent mount that stays on your bars. Works like a champ and the best part is that the GPS can easily be removed when you get where you're going. If you use your bike for long trips or just like to see where you are this works great.
