Navman N40i NavPix 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Navman N40i NavPix 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used it for a couple days now and couldn't be more please. I base my review against my previous GPS, TomTom Navigator 6 for PDA. Compared to It, the navman is much better. The interface is very simple to use (really, if you can't figure this out, you have issues). The maps show great detail and accuracy such as adjacent street names and house/street name of where you're currently driving by. So far, POI are accurate in the WashDC/Arlington/Fairfax area. Calculates/recalculates in a few seconds. Also acquires sat signal in 5 or less seconds of powering on.
It does not have text to speech but it does read out streets that have numbers such as "Route one twenty three" and "exit seventy one ahead". which is great for major streets and highways (tomtom just says exit right in 70yrds).
I like to give props to the Picture feature. Its more useful then what most reviews think. Its not just "a cool addition". For example, Have a traffic accident or on the road and see suspicious vehicle or incidents, just start hitting the camera button and it takes pictures very quickly continuously. Great for police and insurance purposes. Beats most cellphone cameras and is much quicker to use and inconspicuous) Who's gonna argue a pic with GPS coordinates on it! Resolution is good and clear in day and dawn, lens adjusts pretty well at night and to different light types (light bulbs etc).
You can also take a picture to tag the location of your regular digital camera pictures, then use services like Flickr, Mappr etc to have a cool map albums.
Also, navigating by selecting a picture is much easier then selecting it out of your favorites list. Bottom line, the camera is a nifty idea! I could careless to have an MP3 player on it (you prob already own an iPod or player of some sort), dictionary and all the other galore of useless half working features that others have and jack the price up over 500.00. Its a car navigation GPS, not a UMPC!
My only gripe is that the desktop software is currently not "FULLY" compatible with vista. I got it to work after trial/error. You need to uninstall Active Sync (Vista has its own version of this preinstalled). You need it to push updates (check navman site).
Navma, for future - VIDEO! why not? let us pop in a high capacity SD card and film away some nice 640x480 video clips! Cellphones can, you too!
This GPS does the job car navigation wise. Gets you places or out of places in your car, if thats what you need, get this one! If you walk, hike a lot, you're looking at an apple instead of an orange.
Navigate away!

Garmin GPS Nuvi 255w Accessory Bundle - Car Charger + Home Travel AC Charger + USB Data Cable Review

I ordered these to put into a second vehicle, and to charge my new GPS from wall outlets. Neither the car charger nor the wall charger would charge the GPS. The GPS reacted to being plugged in as if it were plugged into a USB cable to a computer, or cycled through an attempt to open maps.

Garmin StreetPilot 3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin StreetPilot 3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We used the StreetPilot driving from Houston, Texas to the mountains of Santa Fe, New Mexico and were impressed with its features and flexibility. Simple to start up, easy to read but takes practice to learn all the options and there are many options.
Although there is not enough detail in the maps to be really useful, it does provide a ton of information besides just maps and latitude and longitude. For example, time of day, altitude, miles per hour, avg mph, distance traveled, time traveled, time to destination, a compass, several alarm systems and optional personal way points. It is compact and portable as well as easy to read. If you are the passenger (definitly not as the driver), the StreetPilot can be as addictive as a computer game.
A one star deduction since with the GPS prices falling as they are, this one seems a tad expensive especially since the useful optional cartridges are a hundred bucks a pop. It would be nice if the manufacturer included the power adapter and one cartridge in this price.

The USB travel charger fails to charge Garmin Nuvi as it's claimed to use for these Garmin models on the site. Plug-in car charger is a low quality device. The Bargaincell vendor has bad and slow customer service support. Buyers should not buy these items. The cost of shipping back and fort is more than the cost you pay for the products. Of course you also waste your time to go to post office to ship them back to return and all other hassle.

Arkon GPSHDCSXL Protective Hard Case for 4.3-Inch GPS Devices (Black) Review

Arkon GPSHDCSXL Protective Hard Case for 4.3-Inch GPS Devices (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read all the reviews and this case works for my wife and me just great. Yes, there is an insert (if you notice in the ad), and the Garmin does not fit in there perfectly and sort of pushes itself out of it (like another reviewer stated), but since the insert is made of foam and cloth, it acts now as a shock absorber. It sort of sits 1/2 way in this foam insert. Looks like that insert was made for another type of GPS, but it still works for our Garmin 855. I just put my Garmin 855 in the case to test to see if it moves around while I shake it pretty hard, and yes it does move somewhat. I feel very safe that if I drop the case, with only the Garmin in it, the case will protect it 100%. So, for me, this formed foam insert adds to the security that my Garmin will not be damaged if dropped. The middle flap protects our Garmin from anything you put in the mesh bag on the other side. However, it will not fit the suction cup, and it will fit the usb, car charger, and the quick manual with ease. I bet it would even fit the optional ac adapter with no problem.
I did my research on the other cases, and this case seems to be the best bet. I don't have to worry about the case turning the Garmin on, and I don't have to worry about damaging it by dropping the darn thing. It holds just about everything, and has a hard case. We think it is great, and a great purchase.

Garmin FMI 40, Data cable & traffic Review

Garmin FMI 40, Data cable and traffic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a NUVI 205 that didn't have traffic on it. This looked like an economical way of getting traffic information to it. And I was right. At less than $70, it will save you about $30. I was planning on hard-wiring my GPS into my vehicle anyway, so the lack of a plug in was a bonus to me.
There is a lot of wire with this cable. It was engineered for mounting a GPS in a semi-truck, with serial GPS data going to a reporting unit. (It may be NEMA compliant, but I haven't checked.) In a standard car, you could run the wire from one end of the vehicle to the other. There is a single thick feed going from the GPS to the radio receiver. (about a foot.) and another 6 feet from the reciever to the power/splitter. From the splitter there are two leads, both about 6 feet long. One for the power, the other for serial data. The label on the plastic bag containing the cable identified the assignments of the wires. Supply voltage is listed as 6-30 vdc.
It will receive 'Premium' traffic. But nothing need be done to get the basic free 'Lifetime' traffic reports. Check the [...] page to verify that you can get coverage where you want to use it.

Garmin StreetPilot III 6.8-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin StreetPilot III 6.8-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First I want to say I am very happy with the talking SPIII. It is does a pretty good job routing and if you drive off the route it will autorecalc a new route for you. I have used numerous GPS's in the past and this does a great job for driving (for biking or hiking I HIGHLY recommend the Garmin 12 Map, my favorite GPS).
Now there are some things to know about this product however. First you get a CD that allows you to download maps from your PC to your Steetpilot. It works over either serial or USB (USB goes to a 32MB memory card that you can plug in). The CD contains maps of the US BUT... you only get to select one region of the US for free. The rest of them you must pay for from Garmin for approx $116 a shot ($291 total for the total US). You can purchase this online at Garmin's web site and they will give you a key to open up the different regions. The base map. the one built into the Garmin, on the GPS is still "good" for the whole US but the CD give MUCH better detail. I am not complaining about this since the maps seem pretty up to date. The road I live on is 2 years old and no other mapping software to my knowledge has it as part of their data but the Garmin software did.
Another thing to note is the form factor for the StreetPilot III and the older street pilots are different. this can be important if you order from Garmin direct accessories like the bean bag mount (as I found out).

Garmin nuvi 750 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Portable Dashboard Mount Included
Great Value for the money! I found the Garmin 750 easy to set up and easy to use. Operating this unit is intuitive, but complete directions are included. I have yet to "play" with all the features, but it works great while using it for my second job. I have to find a lot of locations in the countryside (a lot of back roads) and the unit has been invaluable! You get one free update with the unit that should be done as soon as you get it to make sure the most recent maps are downloaded. One note of caution - you have to download the most recent version of maps on the Garmin website and you have to do this using either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. I found this out when I couldn't download updates using Google Chrome and had to contact Garmin.

Average Reviews:

"I bought this GPS for my girlfriend because she was always having trouble in cities and constantly is getting lost, so it made sense to invest in a GPS that would help her to navigate from place to place easier. I wasn't attached to any brand when I looked but was always impressed with the reviews and testimonies from friends with a Garmin who said they never had problems and were in love with it. I looked at the 205 as it's cheap, but for the price the features and peace of mind of having a Garmin are unbeatable. First, the life-time traffic is great because it helps cut-down on time stuck on the high-way and shows her the quickest way from point A to point B before she even knows the difference. Second, the screen is large and the user interface is incredibly easy to use. It's a bit expensive, but if you're going to invest in a GPS unit, then you might as well make sure you do it right. I'm not sure that a GPS is nearly as valuable without the traffic and not having to pay any subscription fees just sent it over the top.
Definitely purchase if you're looking for easy to use and for a unit that gets it right every time."

Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually could not decide between the Garmin Nuvi 255w or the 750 model, so I decided to buy them both for comparison. I mounted them both to my car windshield and gave them various addresses to find together. I found that both models took the same routes and announced upcoming turns and street names at practically the same time. One thing I noticed about the 255w was that it was updating my position on the road more often, I'd say about 3 times as often as the 750. This made for smoother graphics on the 255w of the vehicle moving along displayed roads, where the 750's display was more of a "jerky" movement. I also found that the display on the 255w was a bit brighter, clearer, and more vivid than on the 750 in both daylight and at night. Another feature I like on the 255w is the graphic turn indicator in the upper left corner, which the 750 lacks. This is a small arrow which shows upcoming turns and the distance to that turn. It also show things like a fork in the road, (ie: a Y intersection), and which fork you will be taking. The 750 just displays text on the top line for upcoming turns without the arrow. It's just a little extra feature on the 255w which I happened to really like. The 255 also automatically adjusts the font size of displayed text so that even lengthy text will fit.
Another feature on the 255w is a display of the posted speed limit on the road which you are currently on right above your current displayed speed. I found myself not even looking at my car speedometer as I could easily see my current speed and the speed limit of my route at a glance. The 750 doesn't have this feature. I also like how they moved the zoom in (+) and zoom out (-) buttons on the 255w to the same side of the screen which makes it a bit easier. On the 750 the zoom buttons are on opposite sides of the screen.
Now there are some features on the 750 that the 255w does not have. The 750 can broadcast it's sound over your FM radio with the supplied cigarette lighter cable, and it has a headphone jack, which I found to be nice features. The 750 also has an MP3 player and an Audio-book player, which the 255w does not. Another really nice feature of the 750 is the car locater. This is a great feature if you are parking in a really big lot, such as at an amusement park or a fair. The 750 marks your location when you remove it from the car, then you take it with you and it remembers where you parked and takes you right back to your car. The 255w doesn't have the car locater.
I also thought the the voice prompts of the 750 where more pleasant sounding than the 255w's. The 750 sounds more like a real female voice, where the 255w sounds more robotic.
Another thing to consider was that I paid $50 less for the 750 and it came with the FM transmitter cable and a USB cord to connect it to your computer for updates and downloads.
My final decision was to keep the 255w and return the 750 because I really liked the graphic turn indicator and the posted speed limit and current speed indicators. I didn't find a need for the 750's MP3 player and Audio book player, but that is up to personal preference. Since the USB cable was not included with the 255w, I purchased it on this site for $10. I also intend to purchase the MSN direct cable when it is available in August 2008.

This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.Garmin's nuvi 255W improvesupon its 200-series predecessors by adding top-of-the-line features such as FM traffic updates or MSN Direct content to an entry-level line. But Garmin is also introducing some significant improvements with this new series, like a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 255W adds complete maps for North America and Text-to-Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet"). The 255W also offers a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you.
The nuvi 2x5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.

Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nuvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push. Wider screen lets you see more of what's around.
