Speck Garmin Nuvi 300 ToughSkin GPS Case (Black) Review

The suction cup for windshield mounting of my Nuvi 360 lost its grip on several occasions, causing the GPS unit to fall. Luckily, the unit was sturdy enough to withstand the fall without damage. This form-fitting "skin" will help to cushion any future falls. All functions and connections to the Nuvi are accessible without having to remove the skin.

SEE UPDATE BELOW ORIGINAL REVIEW
I have just returned from a trip to Europe (London, Paris, Rome, and Florence) where I used the Nuvi 370 extensively and it worked great. First of all, I put a lot of the places I would be going to in the "Favorites" list before I left. The great thing about Nuvi is that it sorts this list based on distance from wherever you happen to be. So I didn't have to scroll through points for Paris or Rome when I was in England and vice versa. Very useful. I also found that the points of interest had all the sightseeing landmarks that I was going to visit and nearly every restaurant that I had earmarked for meals. I also got the translation guide which came in very useful (especially to explain "tap water" at European restaurants, they really want to sell you bottled water and pretend to not understand what tap water means, but showing them in their own language on Nuvi always got the point across). Now here is a report of actual real world use as a pedestrian in Europe.
Pros - It had every street that I walked on without exception. It knew that I could walk the wrong way on one-way streets as a pedestrian (in pedestrian mode). Usually very fast lock on of satellites. Currency converter very useful. Language guide easy to use and very helpful with menus. Learned a few phrases by imitating the voice on the language guide which led to a lot of goodwill in France and Italy. Used it to show addresses to cab drivers which was always helpful. Tracked the taxi rides and could tell when cabbies were way off route and a little protesting got them back on track. Used it to make easy decisions between walking, metro, or cab by routing a destination and seeing how far the walk would be. Nuvi lets you scroll through the route and is pretty accurate as to how long it will take to walk.
Cons - 1. In pedestrian mode, I almost always started walking the wrong way because Nuvi isn't sure which way it is pointed when you are standing still. This is fixed by walking a few feet until you see if you are going the right way, rarely more than 10 feet. 2. It doesn't automatically reroute in pedestrian mode if you get off the selected route, you need to hit "detour" which sometimes leads to a much longer path. 3. Sometimes satellite signal would get lost in the narrow older streets, especially in Italy. Sometimes the display would suddenly indicate that I was walking the exact opposite way that I had been going due to lost or confused signal. But these are all nits and were easily handled.
Overall - The Nuvi 370 worked exactly the way I was hoping it would. If you live in America and plan travel in Europe, I highly recommend the Nuvi 370 and Language Guide.
UPDATE 2ND TRIP TO EUROPE
I recently spent two weeks in Spain where I used the Nuvi in pedestrian mode and drove throughout Southern and Western Spain. The Nuvi worked perfectly except where maps were somewhat out of date. The scariest words in my life now are "Enter roundabout and take second exit to roundabout". At one point we did three consecutive roundabouts! If you are not used to driving in a foreign country, I highly recommend Nuvi 370. The POI's pointed out gas and food when we needed it, and in both pedestrian and driving mode, it got us through many medieval streets with no problems. I again used the language guide(very useful) and was able to figure out what was what on local menus. I find the estimated arrival times in both pedestrian mode and driving mode to be pretty accurate and helpful in decision making. I even used it on the AVE high speed train between Madrid and Cordoba to see how fast we were going (180+ mph). I have now had this for a couple of years and can't live without it.
One of most useful features is the ability to find metro stations nearby when you are in pedestrian mode. Very helpful in Madrid and Barcelona.

By integrating Bluetooth wireless technology with a built-in microphone and speaker, you can pair your nuvi with any compatible Bluetooth phone and talk hands-free while staying focused on the road. And with 1-touch dialing for your POIs, you can quickly and conveniently call ahead to make reservations or get needed information.
You can also avoid tie-ups and steer clear of traffic with the nuvi 370's integrated FM TMC traffic receiver. This unit allows you to receive alerts about road construction and traffic problems that lie ahead on your route. Simply touch the nuvi's screen to view traffic details or change your route so you can detour around the problem area. All of which can be customized with configurable vehicle icons that let you choose individual car-shaped icons in a variety of colors that show your position on the map.
In additional to all this functionality, the nuvi 370 includes many must-have entertainment and travel tools such as an MP3 player, an audio book player (subscription to Audible.com required), and a JPEG picture viewer so you can take your favorite music and pictures with you wherever you go. The USB travel charger fails to charge Garmin Nuvi as it's claimed to use for these Garmin models on the site. Plug-in car charger is a low quality device. The Bargaincell vendor has bad and slow customer service support. Buyers should not buy these items. The cost of shipping back and fort is more than the cost you pay for the products. Of course you also waste your time to go to post office to ship them back to return and all other hassle.

Garmin StreetPilot c580 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with MSN Direct Review

Garmin StreetPilot c580 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with MSN Direct
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The StreetPilot c580 is for the GPS navigation fan who wants it all. You get easy to use navigation, built-in Bluetooth, traffic alerts and MSN Direct displayed on your screen.
I previously owned a c530 with just the basic GPS features so I was really impressed that I could add all those features for about the same price I paid for the c530 just 9 months ago! The StreetPilot 500 series have a brighter screen and faster satellite connectivity than previous models.
The Bluetooth is a safety feature if you own a Bluetooth cell phone. This enables you to talk hands-free while you're driving.
The MSN Direct is cool but limited to only 4 functions: weather, gas prices, movie times and traffic alerts. A minor complaint is that the gas prices usually have a one or 2-day delay and are not necessarily current. This is OK if you are driving through an unfamiliar area and want to know approximate gas prices.
The StreetPilot c580 is a feature-laden GPS that not everyone would need. With current prices, the basic StreetPilot is $200 less than the c580. Whether you need all the bells and whistles for $200 is a decision only you can make!

Garmin Suction Cup Mount for Nuvi (010-10723-03) Review

Garmin Suction Cup Mount for Nuvi (010-10723-03)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This suction cup mount is absolutely horrible. I shouldn't say that...it's fantastic for about 3 weeks, then it's all down hill. Mine held great for about 3 weeks, then kept falling off with the sun pounding down on it. I cleaned the windshield and cleaned the suction cup, still falls off. Then yesterday my wife wanted to borrow it so I went to take it off my windshield and what do I find? The suction cup was literally glued to my windshield. It came off in pieces, and there's many stuck to the windshield still. Now of course it won't work at all. It isn't like I live in Nevada or something, where it's 110 degrees every day in the summer, to deteriorate the material (not that it should then either). This thing is made of some CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP material. Unbelievable. I've had my radar detector mounted on the windshield for 4 years. It's fallen off only a handful of times (maybe twice). So this thing gets 1 star. Only because I can't give it zero stars. It's too bad I can't find some other brand that makes one, because this thing is absolute JUNK and a waste of $$.

My Garmin seemed so slick and I was worred about my kids holding it until I got this "Tough Skin" case. It is perfect! It provides protection, easier handling, and a great grip. The case is user friendly and has cut-out holes in all of the right places so that it does not interfere with any of the buttons or functions on the gps. I was skeptical at buying this at first thinking it would not fit or not hold on to the the window. I have to say, I am very pleased with it!! It does not pop off the window. That was what happened to our original mount that came with our Garmin. It flew off the window and across the dashboard ... ALL THE TIME!! then the last time if flew off, that was it, BROKEN. I did not want to order the same one only to have it happen again. I AM VERY HAPPY!!!CAN'T WAIT to go on our camping trips this summer!!!! :)

Garmin Automotive Mount for nüvi Review

Garmin Automotive Mount for nüvi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this thing thinking I can mount it to the top of my dash. My dash has a slight curve to it, but, it looked like there was a few flat spots where the base could mount. I already new the suction cup wouldn't work on my dash.
Didn't work using the temporary adhessive. The temporary adhessive didn't stick to the dash at all. Before installation, I did wash/dry the dash good, to avoid oils, dust and other containmenants from effecting the adhessive. Playing with the second adhesive disk, it appears I need to mount this thing on a perfectly smooth and flat surface. The permanent adhessive should have better luck because it's stronger and probably can stick with less surface contact between it and the dash, but, by then I found I didn't like mounting the unit on the dash afte all.
Beyond the base, the biggest disappointment with this thing is that the arm that attaches to the base and ends in a ball upon which you mount the Nuvi mounting plate is fixed and doesn't adjust like the suction cup arm that comes with the Nuvi. If it did, I could possibly mount the base in the little shelf below the radio, with the end of the arm sticking out far enough to mount the Nuvi (which actually could work with the suction cup and that hard disk that comes with the Nuvi). Only way to use the arm is mounted on top of a horizonntal surface, like your dash.
Using the arm with the bean bag (this little piece of plastic is REALLY expensive) sort of worked until I had to suddenly swerve one day. Came crashing down --- happened after about a week of driving.
This period was long enough though to convince me that I rather not mount the Nuvi on the dash. Mounting on the dash is great for visibility of the Nuvi screen and for hearing the bluetooth hands free setup. But, the glow of the Nuvi on my windsheild was too distracting.
In the end, I bought a custom dash mount for my car that costs me $60 (Proclip). Works great, and I wasted my money on the Garmin Auto Mount and bean bag.Last negative: the quick release plate that connects to the suction cup that comes with the Nuvi has a microphone jack on it. The quick release plate that comes with the automotive mount doesn't. That sucks if you were thinking of using the auto mount in a second car.

Garmin GTM 12 FM Traffic Receiver Review

Garmin GTM 12 FM Traffic Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After one month's use the traffic module continues to disappoint. While I love the nuvi, I cannot think of a time where the traffic module has given me insight.
From a technology standpoint it works. You can see on a list all the traffic impediments (e.g., construction, traffic conjestion, wreck) and each is rated a green, yellow, or red. If one of these impediments is on your route and it is rated yellow or red, an orange diamond will appear on the map to prompt you to investigate. It can even highlight how much traffic is backed up.
One thing the traffic module does not do is calculate how much time traffic tie-ups will add to your trip. Wish they would fix that. It is also a shame that the FM antenna will not plug into the mounting bracket, therefore you have to plug/unplug vitually everytime you get in/out of the car. These two issues are minor nuisances.
The major nuisance is how the technology is executed - not well at all. I lay all of this at the doorstep of Clear Channel. I find myself in a traffic jam slowing down to 0 mph - but there's nothing on the map. There is an accident on the map (should I re-route?), but when I get to that spot nothing is there and traffic is running at the posted speed limit. Both happened on this morning's commute alone. One time it had a major close-down-the-highway-reroute-all-traffic-to-the-feeder-roads accident as being in the north-bound side of the highway. It was on the south-bound side, and I found myself trapped on the feeder road.
I sent an email to Clear Channel to volunteer sending emails to whatever person that controls this. Got a nice, "Thank you and we will forward your request on to the appropiate person."
My free subscription runs out in 14 months. Something tells me the service will improve by that time. If the service did not improve, I could not for the life of me understand why someone would pay $65/year for it.
This could be a best-thing-since-the-microwave product. Right now it's just a frustrating disappointment.

Save drive time, gas, and your sanity by adding traffic services to yourcompatible Garmin with the help of the portable GTM 12, a plug-and-play traffic receiver.

GTM 12: Because you have better things to do with your time.

Avoid Traffic Tie-ups The GTM 12 is an FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic receiver and antenna. It receives digital information (where available) on traffic and road construction tie-ups and sends it to your compatible Garmin device to offer an alternate route. TMC data is available in a fast-growing number of cities throughout North America and Europe, and gives prompt, accurate notification of accidents, road construction, police or emergency action, etc. — so you can visually monitor traffic flow and, if necessary, avoid traffic tie-ups.

Plug and Drive The GTM 12 features a fully portable, plug-and-play design that requires no professional installation. Just use the suction cups to attach the antenna to your vehicle's windshield. Then plug the GTM 12 into your compatible Garmin device, and you're ready to receive data.

Receive Real-time Traffic Data In most areas, depending on the service provider, TMC traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news, updates or random alerts. With the GTM 12, you see traffic developments in real-time, as they happen, so you can make the right decision sooner. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

I ordered two of these, one for myself and the other for my father. I also installed both of them an our bikes and they work perfectly.
As far as installation goes, I would recommend using a fuse tap (such as an add-a-circuit) from and auto parts store so that the converter box in the line doesn't drain the battery if you don't ride for a while. You may find, however that your fuse circuit is still hot because you may have relays on your fuse box, in that case, I would recommend installing a switch with the hot wire running into the fuse tap so that all you need to do is flip the switch off and the converter box will not use up your battery.
I don't think the converter box uses up that much power, but if it is directly connected to your battery (or you have the fuse tap in a hot circuit ((by hot circuit, I mean that it is getting power even with the ignition off)) ), the converter box IS using power constantly, so that is why i recommend using a switch or a fuse tap to a switched circuit (meaning a circuit that is not receiving power when the ignition is off).
Make sure you ground everything you install, or it won't work, and make sure every new line has a fuse (why i recommend the fuse tap).
You will have to ground the converter box or the setup will not work. If you use a switch with an LED indicator on it, you will also have to ground the switch if you want the LED to work, but not grounding the switch should not impact the setup's functionality as long as the converter box is grounded (speaking from logic, not experience).
If you have any question for motorcycle install, feel free to ask... I know how difficult it can be to find answers to these questions, but fortunately i found a setup that worked for me and my dad.

VCery happy with this purchase! I bought the 360 over the 350 for the Bluetooth. So far it is a great unit: very accurate and fast. At Pricegrabber.com I found the best prices delivered. I would recommend this unit to anyone who travels. It is very easy to operate and attaches easily to the windshield or dash with a sturdy suction mount. It can also be set to play MP3 files and audio books.

Simply dial numbers with the nuvi's touch screen keypad to place a call, and to answer calls, just tap the screen and speak directly into its built-in microphone.

In addition, you can easily look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or from your phone's call history log. Don't know the phone number for your destination? Simply find and dial it from nuvi's database of more than six million points of interest -- including hotels, restaurants, stores, and attractions.

Preloaded software features maps of Europe or North America, and it includes automatic routing, 2D or 3D map perspective, turn-by-turn voice directions that speak street names, and a fingertip touch screen interface -- making navigation as easy as it gets.

The nuvi 360 features a bright, 2.8 x 2.1-inch TFT display with white backlight for easy readability. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you up to eight hours of power, and an included 12/24 volt adapter cable will let you run the navigator off your vehicle's power. An AC battery charger is also included.

A built-in Travel Kit that includes sample MP3s and audio books will get you started with entertainment, and with the unit's SD memory card expansion slot you can add optional software, such as language and travel guides. A USB port is also included for loading and updating data.

Garmin External Microphone (010-10804-00) Review

Garmin External Microphone (010-10804-00)

Works as it should. No noise cancellation means it can get a little noisy but it's better than my phone's speakerphone option. Personally I find the nuvi's built-in mic too lousy to use, as all my callers will complain that they can't hear me. I also left myself messages in my voicemail to test the quality and my conclusion is that the External Microphone offers the best quality vs using my phone's or the Nuvi's built-in mic.
Also comes with two mounting options - a non-adhesive one that will clip to your visor, and another with an adhesive mounting strip which you can stick to the side pillar or somewhere close to your mouth. :)
Hope this helps!

Garmin nüvi 650 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin nüvi 650 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have have a been a long time Garmin GPS customer including three generations of the Streetpilot. I am very pleased with the Nuvi 650 echoing some of the praises you've read here in the reviews.
However for those of who are on the fence about getting the 650 versus the 660 for the extra Bluetooth, FM transmitter and traffic receiver, I want to offer you some more reasons to consider the 660. The Nuvi 650 does not include the leather carrying case, AC adapter and printed manual which comes standard with the 660 packaging ($50 value).
As a an old time Garmin user, I am used to having these items come with my GPS. In addition, the Nuvis do not include CD/DVD map software nor the friction mount (must buy separately esp. for California and Minnesota). Considering how easy it is now for users to access the memory space of the Nuvi from their computers, it's much easier to corrupt the system unintentially. Thats when you'll need the original map software to recover.
Don't get me wrong, I do like the Nuvi 650 over my Streetpilot 2720 for it's size, improve user interface and the SirF Star III receiver for much more reliable GPS reception. But I can only give this product 4 stars because of the lack of accessories that I find essential for my usage and yet comes standard for the Nuvi 660, 670 and 680.
