USGlobalSat BT-359 Bluetooth GPS Receiver Review

USGlobalSat BT-359 Bluetooth GPS Receiver
Average Reviews:

This thing picks up a strong signal and keeps it. I've kept it in my shirt pocket and walked around in cities and it kept me on track,my lst receiver would lose the lock once I flipped it on it's side.
Here's the real impressive part. I was showing this to a friend of mine by my car. I reached in to my car to grab my pda and put the 359 on the roof of my car... you see where this is headed right?
I left and drove a few miles down the road and got to a point where my speed picked up to 45 and heard a thunk. I looked at my rear view in time to see something rectangular hit the road.
It took a second before I realized what it was.. I made a U-Turn and went back to the spot and found my 359, 10ft from there my battery, 5ft from there the lid.
The corners of the unit are pretty banged up but I turned it on, started TOMTOM on my PDA and TADA!! Lock and track...it still works perfectly.
I've driven with this thing for hours and and it never lost my BT signal nor the satellites. If I turn off TomTOM or Mobile Live they both "disconnect" the Bluetooth serial port and the 359 will power off after 10 minutes. I love the auto off. My last GPS was the Pharos i360 and had a push switch which would always get turned on in my bag, and the battery would be dead by the time I went to use it. This one uses a regular USB>miniUSB cable for charging so there's always one around.
I think this is a great product.

I wish I bought this earlier. Instead I made my own mount once the original mount broke. DUH! This Ram Mount is so much better and sturdier than the mount that comes with the StreetPilot 2720. Completely worth the price and well deserved of the 5 stars.

LG LN790 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

LG LN790 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

I bought this GPS from TigerDirect, and was aware that LG would not make or support these units anymore. I downloaded all available maps soon after I bought the device, and was able to put North American map on a 2GB SD card. The map took over 3/4 of the space on my card, so there was not much else room for pictures or music. I still haven't used the bluetooth feature, but am looking for ways I can update its map. The version of map that I have is from 2008 and there are some places, this device gets us lost.

Holux M-1000C Bluetooth GPS Data Logger Travel Recorder (Bluetooth, USB , 66CH, WAAS, 200k Waypoints, M1000c) Review

Holux M-1000C Bluetooth GPS Data Logger Travel Recorder (Bluetooth, USB , 66CH, WAAS, 200k Waypoints, M1000c)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own a standalone Globalsat BT-338 receiver, have a built-in GPS receiver in my HTC Touch 3G mobile, and have a GPS enabled Garmin Forerunner 405 watch/running computer as well. I needed one receiver with long battery life and data logging capability on an affordable price, so I went for the Holux M-1000C. Comparing the reception and the stability of the receivers the built-in Sirf III receiver of HTC has mediocre, the Forerunner has good and the standalone Globalsat and Holux both have excellent sensibility.
The Holux gets fix quite quickly, usually in 30 seconds. It always helps if you don't move while it searches for the satellites, and once it gets fix it never loses again. In urban canyons, such as among the downtown high-rises the signal tends to bounce a bit in every direction, thus later I always modify the tracks with the so called 'clamp to the ground' function. It modifies the height vector based on Google Earth data and eliminates the vertical bouncing and produce a much more realistic elevation diagram - very similar to the barometric altitude meter results. Unfortunately the bound ezTour software doesn't offer this function, but for example the (ex-Motionbased) Garmin Connect web service or the free TCX Converter utility do it for you.
The logger function of the M-1000C is excellent. There are 4 preset modes for logging: car, bike, running, hiking. In hiking mode for example records a waypoint in every 3 seconds and in every 10 metres, while these values in bike mode are 5 seconds and 5 meters. But it is possible to set these values manually according your preferences as well. The memory is huge, 4 hours of running log (recording in every 5 seconds) occupies 1% of the memory only.
Handling is easy: you turn it on, wait for the GPS led blinking (meaning fix) and there you go. When you finished just switch it off. Later in ezTour you can see you track in Google Maps and it is possible to modify your tracklog, like delete unnecessary waypoints, moving waypoints etc too. Unfortunately you cannot see the map under your track while you in Track Editor mode, though editing your track is reasonable manageable. While ezTour will not be your primary GPS track managing utility it does the basic stuff.
The Holux M-1000C delivers why I bought it: it can record the track of a week long hiking (with some external charging solution or spare battery as the battery last 'only' 28 hrs in logger mode), and I can use it as a bluetooth GPS with my navigation software on my HTC mobile if the built in GPS receiver gives up and/or I want to record my track.
Oh, did I mention that you can geotag your pictures with it?

TomTom Bluetooth GPS Receiver for USA and Canada Review

TomTom Bluetooth GPS Receiver for USA and Canada
Average Reviews:

Got this so I could use it with roqybt for the ipod touch and it works perfectly. takes about a minute to find a signal sometimes but other than that I have no problems with this device. I love how this device turns off automatically once it is no longer connected to my ipod, i don't have to worry or remember about turning it off when I leave my car and I have to start the gps program backup on my ipod when I get back to the car so turning this device back on is just a small step to starting the gps program. and its not like theres a lot to do when you turn this thing on, you hit the one button on the device to turn it on then I click one button on my ipod and bam its connected and the gps program is searching for a signal which it finds very quickly compared to my TomTom One gps which usually takes 5 or more minutes to find even one satalite and thats on clear days with a clear view of the sky.
if you have a jailbroken ipod touch 3g and don't want to buy the expensive gps kits from apple this device and rogybt will be a perfect and cheaper alternative. I do recommend you find a good car mount kit for your ipod though because the gps on it is only helpful if the ipod is not laying on the floor of your car from where it slid off your dash or out of the ashtray. :)

Pharos PT250 Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Pharos PT250 Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

The GPS receiver works quite well and has a range far beyond the expected 10 meters. I have used it with my laptop (which was in the house running MS Streets & Trips) and taken the receiver outside to my back yard (about 60-70 feet through walls and such) and it still was connected to my laptop. The software is a little confusing and somewhat difficult to use. This is mainly because to make it fit on a handheld device they had to divide the maps in to little pieces, about one state each. It can only have three maps active at a time and you must change maps if you pass the edge. I haven't tried other products of this type but I do like this one.

After opening the box, it was ready to use with nice 2gb card full of maps and POIs. only 50mb space left in card for your MP3, Pictures and videos. Well, smart me, bought 4gb sd card for it. Now I am ready loaded with my MP3s, photos and what not, to use 4gb card. Lets see what happen:
1. My own home is not in GPS, it is 4 yr old home! Disappointed! well went to website to download the latest as Garmin allows you to download the latest upto purchase date. Need reg# and UPC# for registration, which didn't come in box. emailed amazon invoice to customer service and got that. thanks i didn't had to fax info. Also customer service told me that maps came on SD card are the latest and greatest they have. very disappointed! So no more maps updated in last 4 yrs.
2. Started MP3 player, showed first file invalid, too bad! went to second folder and atleast the 2nd file worked. then I noticed it is showing couple of files invalid. player does not work in background when you are on maps! Also it takes you to first folder every time you go to play mp3.
3. Picture viewer is nice and have reasonable interface.
Also POIs and addresses are horrible to search.
Well I am going to return mine! shop for a better one. Price is not too bad on this and that was the only thing attracted apart from bundle of so called features.

Mobile Crossing WayPoint 200 GPS Review

Mobile Crossing WayPoint 200 GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The version that I got is Waypoint 205 (aka Waypoint 200 national edition). In my opinion, this PDA + GPS (or rather GPS + PDA) is probably the best in its class. However, its price range may put it on a not so competitive edge against other similar products. The reason I gave it only 3 stars is not because of the way the product was built but because I don't think that the PDA + GPS combined technology has matured to the point that makes this product useful for every one. In fact, if you are not a techie, you might find your experience in configuring this product for your own use frustrating.
As a PDA ...
It runs Windows CE and allows you to sync with Outlook via ActiveSync. Note that this unit comes with a fully featured Bluetooth adaptor but IT DOES NOT COME WITH A WIRELESS ADAPTOR (unlike most other PDAs/Pocket PCs priced half as much). So if you want to browse the internet at a cafe/airport/hotpoint, you will need to buy a wireless compactflash. Since the Bluetooth connection is indepensible (that is how this PDA communicates with the bluetooth GPS reciever), you probably would want to shop for one compactflash card that supports both Bluetooth & Wifi connections. There are very few manufacturers that make an adaptor for both of these wireless technologies. And when you do find one (see Ambicon for example), it may not work well. So chances are you will need to buy another wireless compactflash and take it with you whereever you go. This is not an actractive option, is it?
As a handheld GPS ...
This is what the product is marketed for (i.e., mainly as a hand held GPS). Its navigational accuracy is quite good. In addition, it comes with a well thought out auto gadget set that you will find it indispensible when you use the unit inside a car. It does a pretty good job of finding routes and will quickly detects that you've missed a turn and re-computes a new route/detour without requiring any manual interaction. Since it comes with a Bluetooth GPS receiver, the receiver can be mounted remotely from the unit to allow for better sattelite reception.
You can also record your GPS positions. This feature makes unit suitable for off-road use. But with limitted battery power, I don't exactly know how useful this feature can be.
The Waypoint 200/205 has several critical weaknesses that are common to nearly all products in its class. Basically, it is a complex computer with complex navigational software running on very limitted harware resources. These problems make this type of product better suited for techies and not for every one.
1. As mentioned above, this unit does not come with a wireless connection
2. Plan to spend many frustrating hours if you want to run ActiveSync on this unit via the Bluetooth connection. Mobile Crossing has a web page especially for this feature. But it is not of much help. There is an expert review on the web specifically mentioning his frustration in getting this feature to work. It took him 30 minutes to figure out how to use this features. Well, it took me about 1 day to get this feature to work.
3. The unit is not reliable. You will need to frequently soft resetting your unit. In some cases, soft resetting won't solve the problems. For example, you may find the unit automatically turns off the backlight when you tap on the screen and soft resetting does not solve this problem. In these cases, you will need to take the battery out to perform a hard/cold reset. This kind of reset will erase all software you've downloaded and your own customed configurations. Basically, you should always back up the data on your PDA to your PC or Laptop. The unit is just not reliable enough to function standalone.
4. Unlike the expensive GPS unit that comes with your car, the Bluetooth GPS will take about 1 minute (or much longer in some cases) to sync with the sattelites if you only turn it on sporadically. This wait can be taxing on your patience
5. Be careful if you decide to use the business locations that come with the detailed maps. They are accurate most of the time. But a good fraction of the times, it will direct you to go to a place that is a few miles away from the actual business address. Because of this problem, a could be very useful feature is of limitted utility. If you don't want to get lost, I recommend that you always look up the destination address on the web and use that for navigation.
6. The unit is really practical for 1 or at most 2 region maps loaded. Any more than that will make the unit extremely unresponsive. Loading the maps of 3 or more regions may even crash your Waypoint. Furthermore, you really have to be a techie and have a lot of patience to go through the map downloading instructions. The national edition allows you to have access to all US region maps. But it does not come with all of these maps installed. All US maps will fit into a 1GB compactflash card. You can buy this card from Mobile Crossing or you can build the card yourself. In either case, here is another card that you will need to carry with you whenever you travel.
7. At the time of this writing, Mobile Crossing map availability is limitted US, Canada, and UK. iQUE product has significantly more maps of other countries.
8. According to Mobile Crossing, the battery is specially made for the product. If you need an extra battery for your PDA, Mobile Crossing will direct you to their outlet. The battery alone costs about $60. I have not been able to find any other alternative.
Mobile Crossing tech support is better than most other companies. It is probably because they are still a small company whose products (though quite good in their classes) have not been widely adopted. I have contacted their tech support a few times. In most cases, they can diagnose the issues quickly. I would not be surprised if a significant portion of the cost of product goes to tech support.
The GPS/PDA combined product is a such a good concept. It fits the use profile of most of us. We only need to use the navigation feature on the average may be once a week or when we travel. For the rest of the time, we can use the unit as a full-featured PDA. But because of limitted computational power, memory, and reliability of the software, one needs to think twice before buying this product.
If your need is just for your own local area/state/region, the regional release of this product is probably what you want. You won't need to configure your unit since it is shipped with the map for your region (i.e., it is ready for use out of the box). However, if you need to use more than one region (as most of these units are national editions), you will need to ask yourself the following two questions:
Are you a techie?
Do you derive pleasure from figuring out how things work?
If you answer no to either question, your need for a mobile hand help GPS must be extremely great before buying this product or any other product in the same class. You might want to consider buying a PDA unit and a separate navigational unit. In my assessment, tt is still at least a few years away before we see a PDA/GPS product that can overcome most of the weaknesses mentioned here.

Qstarz BT-Q1000eX Professional BT Data Logger GPS (Lap Timing Analysis, Beeper, Vibration Sensor, 5Hz, 400,000 waypoints) Review

Qstarz BT-Q1000eX Professional BT Data Logger GPS (Lap Timing Analysis, Beeper, Vibration Sensor, 5Hz, 400,000 waypoints)

This GPS data logger works great for the price as a motorcycle lap timer with the added bonus of GPS location info allowing analysis of any part of the track such as corner speed and location at 0.2 second intervals. However, it would be nice if it logged at 10Hz versus 5Hz. With GPS accuracy of 6-9 feet I don't know if it would really give you much better information as far as track location on the width of the track but would give you more information on speed through the corners as even at 60 mph you are traveling 88 feet per second and so at 5Hz you are only getting points every 17.6 feet. 10 Hz would bring the data points inline with the accuracy of current GPS systems with a recorded point approx. every 8.8 feet when traveling at 60 mph. You must download the data to a computer and use the companies Qsports software with lap analysis function enabled to view data since no local LCD screen controls etc..., but if Qstarz added these would definitely raise the costs which at the current price is a great deal and why I decided to purchase. A couple recommendations I have for using the gps data logger as a lap timer are to not select the check box to remove drift points when importing data from the device, I have not been able to determine from the literature what removing drift points actually does, but has messed up some data. The other recommendation I have is to download/import data from the device to the computer after each session on the track and delete the data stored on the device after successful import. The time for import is not as long and it ensures your sessions are kept as separate data files.

BT-Q1000eX is an extraordinary GPS Lap Timer with eXtreme 5Hz log speed which enables Q1000eX to log up to 5 times per second providing most accurate measurement of track, speed, and distance. Such characteristic makes Q1000eX very suitable for every kind of extreme sports activity, especially for super moto, road course motorcycles, oval cars, or road course autos. And drivers can also improve their lap time by valuable driving information.Q1000eX GPS lap timer is simple and easy to use. It's stand-alone without the help of other accessories like transmitter are unnecessary. It adopts the GPS technology to log your race and later you can upload your driving information via USB or Bluetooth to PC for the included Lap Timing Analysis software to analyze the data. After manually define the start, finish, and split point on Google Map, you can see the very detailed driving information as following: Avg/Min/Max speed by each lap, Sector time (the time from one split point to another), Split time (the cumulative time from start point to split point), and point current speed.Other than as a GPS Lap timer, BT-Q1000eX is also a very powerful data logger with 8MB memory size able to log up to 40,000 waypoints and long battery life to continuously operate 42 hrs, which give a very strong base to support the huge demand by 5Hz log. It also integrates A-GPS, beeper, vibration sensor. A-GPS can boost the GPS warm start time to less than 15sec, Beeper can notice the device status, and Vibration sensor can smartly save power and recordable waypoints. The included dual software: QTravel and QSports even strengthen the applications of Q1000eX on many aspects, making it become a multi-functional device no matter for lap timer, for navigation, for travel log, or for sports log.

Garmin nüvi 1450T 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin nüvi 1450T 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I needed a replacement for my Garmin 200W,
I like the larger screen, the lane assist and the eco routing. It also has spoken street names which is something I wasn't looking for but is nice.
This is a very fairly priced GPS and does what I want a GPS to due without a lot of bells and whistles.
So far I haven't been able to use the lifetime traffic, but I am sure in the larger cities it would work great.
I have noticed the screen requires more pressure when typing in info then my old 200w and it takes longer for it to calculate the route, neither is a negative just different from my older one.
Eco routing is a pretty cool feature and you can keep track of fuel used etc.

I used a Mio C320 for several years and had many issues with road location reliability. Like many other C320 users, the battery life was terrible. The new Mio Moov R303 is signifcantly better in coverage, usability and the battery life is awesome. Kudos to the manufacturer for making the necessary changes to the product line. This is a great value and, with its improvements competetive with othe GPS brands.
