Mio C320 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Mio C320 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I got this for $150 on black friday. while it does have a few minor faults, for the money it is probably the best GPS out there. the main thing this unit has going for it is how customaziable it is. in the past month, i have changed the following on my unit:
- added text to speech ( a feature normally found on the more expensive 520 version)
- added newer maps with 6 million POI (again, found on the more expensive unit vs. the 1.5 million found out of the box)
- edited the skin of the navigations screen and changed/removed buttons for ease of use
these and other features, such as an optional video player, and many other custom features, can easily be found on google and several gps forums.
obviously, customzing the unit to this extent is not for everyone, and if you are not technically inclined, you might not get the full value out of your c320. however, if you have a decent grasp of computers and software in general , you should take advantage of this great gps - great out of the box, EVEN better once you get to work with it for a few weeks.
--
Update: 5/29
Ok so it's been about 6 months since I got this GPS. In that time, I've downloaded newer maps (now have 12 million POI's), downloaded a custom skin that adds a ton of usability features (easy access to applications like word doc, video player, etc) as well as improving the overall looks, and done some fine tweaking on the settings to improve the TTS. (The applications can only be accessed through a hack, by the way).
However, in adding all these features (most of these were intended for the more expensive C520), my GPS unit started to operate alot more sluggishly. The map would take a few seconds to update after turns, which was unacceptable. There was a noticeable lag between button presses and responses. Like I said, this was probably because all these added features were never meant to be run on the processor of the C320.
I wound up removing all the extra features I added, but I still have text to speech and the newer maps. I also defragged the drive , which helped alot. The lag is very minor but still noticeable. I'd still recommend this unit if you can get it for cheap, as it's better than almost any other sub $150 unit out there.

Mio R403 4.3" GPS Receiver Review

Mio R403 4.3 GPS Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I replaced a Mio C220 that I'd had for almost 5 years. It cost $180, but the R403 was $90. The configuration changes were much easier by comparison...more intuitive. If hardware and software has to be navigated via a 200 page manual, it's too complex(with the necessary exceptions, of course). A GPS should not be so complex a manual is necessary to read (to have, yes, but not forced to read). The navigation compared to the C220 is not better in the routes it chooses. The lane guidance is great and works without a problem. There will never be a GPS that will pick a route that is best because it is better than other choices. It will pick what is configured to be fastest, shortest, cheapest, etc.. One option that needs to be included is to exclude neighborhood streets.
I've tested it and found the C220 to more my liking, but it's broken and I'm not about to go "backwards". When I've chosen a different route then it gives, it doesn't endlessly try to re-route me back. It moves on as it should. I have navigation through my phone, but it's slower when going through city streets. I've missed turns because of that. I chose the Mio because I'd have one before and as it would turn out, the power adaptor for the C220 works for the R403 as well. There are not many details given here, because the liking of a GPS unit is fairly subjective.

Mio P550 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Mio P550 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't recommend this item. There are a couple of pluses, but there are a number of problems:
First, the pluses--
--The price is good for a GPS unit and PDA.
--The SIRF III GPS received is responsive, receiving good reception even inside my house (except for the basement).
--The Wifi is fast.
Now the minuses:
--The battery life is poor. I ran through a fully charged battery in a little over an hour with the Wifi on.
--The screen is poor quality. There is bleeding of text and images and the resolution does not appear good. Possibly, this is because the screen is quite large for 320x240 resolution.
--The PDA functions are not integrated with the mapping and GPS functions. E.g., there does not appear to be a way to access your contacts list within the Mio Maps.
--Mio Maps is clunky software. It requires multiple taps and is not intuitive.
--There are typical Windows Mobile memory problems because applications do not shut down when closed. I guess I'll need to pursue the third party software route to address this problem.
--Internet Explorer is a dated and inconvenient browser for mobile devices. It doesn't format pages well and will not load secure sites such as Chase Banking. I downloaded Opera mobile but they want to charge $24 for a registered copy.
--The device is quite heavy. It is industrial in appearance; not attractive but not terribly ugly. It is a bit odd that the screen is so recessed.
--I was surprised that the device connects to ActiveSync via USB 1.1. This causes synchronization to be very slow.
--Skype did not work very well even though I have a very fast home Wifi network.
--Almost no software came with device (only Worldmate, Mio Mapping and the basic Windows Mobile). Outlook was not even included. This is a first, in my experience.
I haven't used the mapping software extensively. It's based on TeleAtlas.

Both affordable and stylish, the Mio P550 makes it easier than ever to get where you are going, even when you aren't quite sure where that might be. And because the P550 is compatible with most Windows Mobile 5 software, you can use it for off-road navigation as well.
Since it runs on the Windows Mobile 5 operating platform, the Mio P550 can support the GPS software of your choice. This means you are not restricted as to where and when you can use GPS, nor do you need different devices depending on the activity you want to use them for, for ultimate flexibility. For the road, the manufacturer does recommend Mio Map software, which guides you to your destination with a seamless journey, and has maps of the US and 24 European countries available. However, the P550 is equally in its element if you want to go sailing, biking, or hiking, requiring you to just add the software and get going. The highly sensitive SirfStar III GPS chipset in the P550 can receive signals from up to 20 satellites for extremely accurate positioning, even in the toughest terrain. And when it comes to connecting the receiver, you don't have to worry about getting tangled up with external antenna and extra wires, because it is already built-in. Slim and sleek, the P550 has an ultra-compact design offering pocket-sized portability that's perfect whether you are traveling on foot, by bike or in your car. The Mio P550 even makes exchanging files quick and easy via reliable, high-speed Bluetooth connectivity for synchronizing your Outlook or calendar with your desktop computer.
More than a convenient navigator, the P550 can be used with SD/MMC cards to store pictures, MP3 files, videos, and eBooks, turning this unit into a multimedia entertainment center. Now you can always take a couple of eBooks, your favorite MP3s, a film or two, and your photo album along, in the convenience of a standard memory card. And since you are only limited by your number of SD/MMC cards, you can read on the train, show relatives your family snaps, or listen to music strolling around town, taking unlimited entertainment with you wherever you go. The Mio P550 also offers all the advantages a surprisingly powerful, incredibly versatile PDA running Windows Mobile. Providing access to all Microsoft Office Pocket applications, you can go through your PowerPoint presentation, edit Word documents or create an Excel spreadsheet any time you need to, so you'll always be prepared and up to speed. And when you've had enough of work, you can also use the P550 to play games to pass the time, or use the Wi-Fi to get online and surf the Internet.

Mio MOOV 310 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Mio MOOV 310 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
True, I have only had this item for a little over a week, but am finding it to be very easy to learn and use. The only "down" side is that much of the time it initially takes what seems to be lengthy time (2-3 minutes) to find the satellites. Once it has locked on to the satellites it works very quickly. It configures routes quickly and accurately. I can use it in the house to set up routes, etc., with no problem. (It doesn't always note the exact house address as the locale from which I am working, but is usually within a door or two.)
On the road the speech is clear, and the map in motion is wonderful to watch as the car is moving. Occasionally Samantha will cut it pretty close before telling me to turn, but she has warned of the upcoming turn far enough in advance for me to deal with it. I do wish it would routinely warn which lane to stay in when coming to a "y", etc. At this point I have used it for trips to places I know. I will be taking a 12 hour trip to unknown areas, and will report back about how it works for me then.
Before buying I researched the Garvin and the TomTom. I ran across the Mio Moov accidentally and liked what I saw. I was a little leary because of the extremely limited number of reviews available, but it is a new model. I had settled on the TomTom XL S before I decided to take a chance on this "new, unknown" model. So far, I am very happy with my choice. It is a great value for the money with all that it offers. (Let's see what I say six months down the road!)
JUNE 1, 2008:
I have now had the product for just over a month and I still love it! It has worked beautifully on two lengthy trips to unknown areas and on several trips to known areas. My husband has tested it by repeatedly taking his own out-of-the-way route and has been amused by Samantha's persistence in rerouting us. He said they should make one that says, "Look, Dummy, I keep telling you where to go!" She kindly and quickly reconfigures and gets it right every time.
It still takes two to three minutes to find satellites when it has been "rebooted" or often when I fire it up while in the house....but that is not an issue. Once on and running, there is no delay in routing. I still find the advance warning of upcoming turns to be adequate, even on the occasions when Samantha doesn't actually say "turn" until we are nearly on the turn. Also, remember...the visual is constantly in front of me. I know by looking at the arrow on the upper left if I will be turning left or right LONG before the turn comes.
My 32 year old daughter is directionally challenged and used my Mio Moov 310 for an extended day trip out of state. She and my granddaughter were sold! My granddaughter couldn't believe when Samantha said to turn right, my daughter didn't have to ask "driver's side or passenger side?" The visual was right in front to complement the verbals. She does a great deal of traveling to out of the way places and uses map quest constantly. She is thrilled with this GPS, and we have now purchased one for her for a college graduation present. The only thing I REALLY DON'T LIKE is the fact that my battery does not last ever over 1 hour.
My sister just purchased a TomTom 720go for significantly more than my Mio. When reading the "improvements" of the TomTom 720go over the TomTOm XL, I was pleased to see that my Mio Moov 310 has many of the features that the TomTom 720go considers "improvements".
I still rate this as a four (4) star item, and would recommend it to anybody.
