I have had three Garmin GPS units now. For the first two, I used the mounting system from Garmin. It worked fine, but it required permanent mounting. I wasn't sure where I'd be permanently mounting my new GPS, so this time I bought the RAM Mount system instead. This one attaches to the windshield of my Jeep using a suction cup.
The RAM Mount approach is fantastic! Instead of making a different mount for each type of thing that needs to be mounted, they make the basic mounting unit and then individual holders that attach to each of the mounts. That way, if and when I change my GPS unit in the future, I only have to get the new cradle and attach it to the mount that I already have. It's not only cheaper in the long run, it means that there are lots of options. I'm never going back to the Garmin mounts.
I contacted RAM Mount for some pre-sales assistance, and they were very helpful. It seems like a company with their act together. I really recommend checking them out.

Garmin Vehicle power cable Review

This vehicle power cord is for the Oregon and Colorado models. I got it for my Oregon 400T. It is fine except for the 90 degree angle of the plugin to the GPS. When plugged in to the GPS the cord faces forward toward you, so the cord is in front (at the bottom) of the GPS when you are using it. Why didn't Garmin make a straight connector so the cord points down, or a 90 degree plug that positions the cord to the rear of the GPS? Do they know something I don't? Maybe a car mount device requires it this way, or, as with the carry case they supply (read my review), the power cord was designed for the Colorado model and just applied to the Oregon model. The power cord is over 5 feet long.

Garmin Hard carrying case Review

Garmin Hard carrying case

This carry case for the Garmin Oregon GPS is too big and bulky to use. It looks like it was designed for the Colorado model and they just applied it to the Oregon model. Sure it works, but it is way to tall. It could be an inch shorter. The Oregon mounts inside via an attach strap and velcro which puts it at the far bottom end with an inch of dead space at the top. Also, it is way too thick (2.25"), as it has to be to accomodate that big attach clip and velcro inside. And the attach strap on the outside (velcro) to attach to your pants belt, well it is backwards. To use it, leave the velcro attached and unhook your belt from your pant loops and thread it through the case loop. The case does have a quality carabiner attached and is quality made. And it is made, so when you open the case, when it is on your belt, it opens 90 degrees with support straps so the GPS can be read at belt level without taking it out of the case. I will get a smaller beltloop type soft case like a Caselogic or similar to tot my Oregon with me.

Works as expected, but the strange orientation of the micro USB cable (should be straight down out of the Oregon, or toward the back, NOT toward the front) is puzzling.
