TomTom GO 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom GO 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, I have to admit really falling in love with this device over the last week. The reason I bought it is actually because of third-party software package provided by a company called Equinux that makes the TomTom Go Mac OSX compatible. This software is not included, but it's easy to find on the web.
It's this software packages, callled Tam Tam, that makes the TomTom Go, to my knowledge, the first, truly MAC OSX compatible car GPS. Which in my humble opinion is a far better solution than jury-rigged coding for extreme hackers who try and force Garmin or Magellan to work with the Mac operating system machinse or the truly sad compromise of using Virtual PC, which, as far as I understand, makes your mac vulnerable to all those nasty virus and techno-terrors aimed at PC/Intel boxes.

In deference to the review guidelines, I won't put the Equinux URL here, but it's easy enough to find them on the web. The main reason I bring Equinux up at all is because if it wasn't for their Tam Tam Mac OSX software, I never would have bought my TomTom Go and, Man, I would have missed out on a wonderful device.
Anyway, the device, TOMTOM GO, is fantastic! The 3D map views are clear and easily read and once you switch to a map section that applies to where you are the TomTom has no problem getting a GPS connection - I'm making this assumption because I live and work in the hills of Tennessee, North Carolina Virginia and if it can get GPS reception here than that's really saying something.
Also, I splurged for the pre-loaded version, and I think I made the right call, just because I didn't want to take too many chances considering the, at the time, compatibility concerns, concerns which have since been fully addressed.
There is one down side, because the US map is sectioned into 6 or 7 maps, even if the maps are all loaded you can't go from a specific address in one section to a specific address in another section. This is a bit of a bummer, but once you get a hang of using the Major US Roads maps, which lack most specific addresses, and see how easy it is to switch maps as you go along, this is soon resolved. It's this flaw and the rather lousy mount that are the only reasons this is a four, and not a five, star review.
On the case of the mount, it too is a problem that is easliy rectified with one of those jell sticky, easy-to-peal off pads you can use on your dash. Better that than the permanted adhessive disc TomTom provides if your planning to attach their mount to your dash instead of your window.
Anyway, aside from the address to address multiple map problem and the dashboard mount problem, this device is great and if, like me, you are a Mac enthusiast who has been waiting for years for a Car GPS complete unit (not just a receiver) that's truly Mac OSX compatible, than it is here... after a fashion.
All in all, the TomTom GO with Equinux Tam Tam software is probably the best investment I made all year!

Lowepro 4.3 Navi Classic Leather Case for GPS Navigator (Black) Review

Lowepro 4.3 Navi Classic Leather Case for GPS Navigator (Black)

I actually ordered this not for a GPS but for my Samsung Epic4G with the extended battery, regular cell phone cases could not accomodate the beast of a phone so I had the idea to go with this based on the dimensions, its still a little more snug than I would like it to be, but the leather will likely stretch with time and usage, I was hoping to be able to put my ID, cards and cash in with it and use the included ring to hang it from my neck, but that was not meant to be. Great quality leather, nice soft suede-like interior, magnetic closure. Very happy with this purchase!

ARKON TTEP128 TomTom EasyPort 1-Inch Multi Angle Adhesive Dash Mount Review

ARKON TTEP128 TomTom EasyPort 1-Inch Multi Angle Adhesive Dash Mount

I mounted my GPS below the dash so that it looks like it was purchased with the car. The mount is good and solid but the snap ring that holds my Tom Tom 540 XXL feels very loose. I have seen this mentioned in other review. I'm not sure if it's going to be an issue yet or not. Still, I would recommend this mount to anyone who is considering a solid, permanent mount in their vehicle. I did drill three holes in my dashboard and use the accompanying screws to secure the mount and GPS so you should consider this before deciding to purchase. Do you want to deface you car?

ARKON TTEP123 TomTom EasyPort Cup Holder Mount Review

ARKON TTEP123 TomTom EasyPort Cup Holder Mount
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't like my GPS on the windshield. I have a mini-van and mounting the GPS on the windshield puts it in the sun and makes it hard to reach for operation or installation and removal. This takes care of that quite neatly. It is solidly built and the flexible arm and adjustable ball mount give you the ability to position the unit wherever you need it. The cup mount has a tightening wheel to lock the mount in the cup holder too. Finally, the part that actually attaches to the GPS is modular. You can get other mounts for other brands of GPS, so you're covered if you own more than one brand or upgrade in the future. All you'll need to buy is the end piece.

Garmin nüvi 2360LMT 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Lifetime Map & Traffic Updates Review

Garmin nüvi 2360LMT 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Lifetime Map and Traffic Updates
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've written a rather long review, so this first paragraph a quick summary: The unit works as intended and is great with basic navigation, but there are some rough spots with some of the bonus features, and sparse documentation. Voice recognition works very well, but it's slow on the uptake and not perfect -- so expect to repeat yourself often. At each step it guides you with a voice prompt, or you can turn voice prompts off and follow prompts on the screen for faster entries. The touch screen is fine for entering letters and tapping the "OK" button, but the "drag" function when scrolling the map around with my fingertip is inconsistent and requires heavy finger pressure. The questionably-useful Junction View screen unpredictably takes over the navigation screen and hides all "remaining distance" and map data, though twist the display into portrait view and this problem is solved. Lane assist can be a help, but simultaneously may lead to confusion at complicated freeway junctions. Route recalcs could be faster, but processor speed and animation overall is fast and smooth. Display is adequately bright except in very bright sunlight, and the screen is just reflective enough to pose viewing issues unless adjusted precisely. Volume is more than adequate. The traffic feature seems to work OK, though not as good as Google traffic on my BlackBerry, and it doesn't make it clear when my route is being re-routed due to an accident or congestion.
So with that out of the way, on with my review...
I've used a narrow-screen Garmin 200 for the past few years, as well as Google Maps on my BlackBerry Storm. I hesitated purchasing a new GPS because between the two of those devices, I was pretty well covered to get anywhere I needed to go.
But the 2360LMT came along and I couldn't ignore the list of "extra" features it packed in for the price. And let's face it: A cell phone is great for finding stuff, but not actually navigating while driving, and the old nuvi 200 lacked voice recognition, which I considered a significant safety compromise as well as an input hassle.
Initial power-on / boot-up went smoothly with just a couple of "Accept" screens and reminders to register the product with Garmin. No additional setup steps were required, though it took a few minutes for my initial position fix to be calculated. After that, position fix occurs imperceptibly, even when I power the unit on in a city miles away from where I turned it off. However, boot-up takes about 25 seconds to where the device is ready to receive input, and that feels like an eternity when I want to get navigating.
Build Quality & Screen: the 2360LMT isn't "razor thin" like some of the recent, more expensive Garmin lineup. It's not much thinner than my old 200. The screen is reasonably bright, high resolution, and wide. Brightness can be adjusted with voice commands while driving. If I have sunlight shining on a light colored shirt, the screen tends to reflect that back at me, but can be minimized with very precisely adjusting the tilt of the unit. The animation is smooth, less jerky than my old unit, and the zoom level "flies in" and out depending on vehicle speed & location relative to upcoming turns. It's a very fluid presentation. The unit has an orientation sensor, so can be used in portrait mode, which is a nice change on long, straight stretches of freeway to "see" off in the distance. The unit takes advantage of portrait mode by automatically zooming back the display a notch, and adjusting the viewing angle at which it looks ahead, to maximize the view towards the horizon. However, for navigating around town, I prefer the standard landscape mode, where side streets are more visible.
The display colors darken automatically at dusk and, surprisingly, darken when I enter the long Caldecott tunnel near my home, even though the tunnel itself isn't depicted on the map. The daytime backlight brightness is stored independently of the nighttime brightness, so when I set it at 100% at noon and 10% at night, it stores both of those settings. One gig on the animation is in an instance when the unit expects me to turn left, but I choose to continue straight ahead, the map follows the predicted route through the turn, then recognizes I've continued straight, so quickly corrects back. If I were at a complex 6-way intersection or round-about in a residential neighborhood, this feature might mistakenly lead me to think that I had turned to the correct street, and I'd prefer it to not use this predictive positioning feature.
Touch Screen Sensitivity: not so hot. Finger taps register OK, but scrolling the map around, for instance on the "show traffic" overview map display, is frustratingly slow. It requires a unusually heavy finger press, not at all like my old nuvi 200. The map doesn't always move, or moves in the wrong direction, or "snaps back" to its previous location when I lift my finger.
Voice Recognition: pretty impressive, yet frustrating. Thankfully, this feature has prevented me from having to use the touch screen much. I say "Voice Commands" and the unit pops up a list of commands I can say, such as "find address" or "search by name." I say "Pegasus" and (on the second try; 1st try got me "Recruiters") it confirms, "1. Pegasus?" I say "yes" or "one" and it searches and quickly finds "Pegasus Cycle Works" in Danville. I say "Navigate!" and it plots a route. Very clean.
Likewise, I say "find address" and it asks, "what city in California?" I say "Hayward" and after multiple tries getting that one right (kept wanting to send me to Orange and Onida), it asks for the house number. I don't have to draw out "Four... Two... Six... Eight" and wait for each digit; no, I say "forty-two sixty-eight" and it throws the whole address up on the screen pretty quickly. Again, very clean. Alternatively, I can say "spell city" and then spell it out, letter by letter. However, unlike with the typed-in entries, using voice commands I've found no way to skip the city and go straight to the street address.
The downsides? Besides having trouble recognizing some names, there are some other rough spots: When each prompt is spoken -- for instance, "*Boing* What city in California?" Then, as a user, I've got to wait a beat before I speak the city (there's a "lips" icon in the upper right corner; it's red when the unit is speaking to me, then turns green when it's ready to listen for my response or command, which takes about a second after it finishes its question). I'd prefer the *Boing* come at the end of the prompt, as soon as it's ready to listen. Alternatively, the volume can be muted to turn off voice prompts, or, as Amazon member maffeo pointed out in the comments to this review, there is an "expert mode" (Tools > Voice Commands > Wrench Icon) that turns off voice prompts (on-screen prompts only). Either method makes voice entry of addresses much faster, accurate and less frustrating.
I'm also finding that creating and using the Favorites list is not well integrated with the Voice Commands. Creating new Favorites from an address entered via voice requires me to back out to the menu, click on "Recently Found", select the location/address, navigate to it, click on the navigation screen to display the overhead map, then select the sidebar menu to bring up the Save prompt. Not intuitive at all, and requires me to begin navigation TWICE to a destination just in order to save it as a favorite. This process could be much more refined to make it easier to program favorites into the unit while killing time.
Also, as John Sellers points out in the comments to this review, selecting a Favorite from the list using voice commands requires me to scroll through the list, two Favorites at a time (unless I'm in portrait view, in which case six Favorites are displayed at a time), until the destination appears. The Favorites appear to be sorted in order of closest proximity, so when I want directions to Auntie Ginger's house 35 miles away in San Jose, it'll be at the bottom of the list, and I have to scroll down to her entry -- on screen at a time -- before I can select it. This is majorly annoying: if the GPS can find every Home Depot within the bay area with a simple voice command, it should be able to pick out "Ginger" from a list of 1000 favorites! Grrrr...
Lastly, Voice Command recognizes commands over steady background road noise, but doesn't seem to tolerate commands when I've got the radio louder than a whisper, or when I'm accelerating (presumably because of the changing pitch of the background noise?).
Lane Assist: Nice feature, but with problems. For instance, if two off-ramps are closely spaced, the lane assist arrows only take into account the exit I'm navigating towards. So if there's an extra exit-only lane for the first off-ramp, the Lane Assist may indicate that I could be in that lane. Need to pay attention to those overhead exit signs. Also, on city streets with double turn lanes, chances are Lane Assist won't know they're both there and only show a single arrow. Need to be aware that in situations where another turn, such as an on ramp, immediately follows that double lane turn. Lastly, when the GPS is mounted in portrait view, and there are more than 4 lanes on the freeway, the lane assist display gets squeezed down to just 3 lanes followed by dot-dot-dot -- not at all ideal on those big 6 and 8 lane interchanges.
Junction View: beginning anywhere from .8 to .5 miles from a freeway junction, this static pictogram is displayed to approximate what the freeway interchange looks like, providing assistance in choosing a lane. With the device oriented in traditional Landscape view, as reviewer John Sellers indicated, it removes all data (including the all important distance remaining...Read more›

Sylvania 4.3" GPS NAVIGATION SYSTEM (SGPD430) Review

Sylvania 4.3 GPS NAVIGATION SYSTEM (SGPD430)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've tried most of the big guys GPS units and found this one to be much better than expected. It has quicker response time than most (Magellan, TomTom and others.) The Navigation unit performs as good as any unit I have used, good directions and easy to use.
It also had some bonus features that I didn't expect like a micro SDHC slot. The Video player plays Dvix files so it's worth the price as a portable video player alone. It also plays MP3s and WMAs. The only sight bummer is that it can't play music and navigate at the same time. If this product would be put out by the big guys, it would cost 3 times as much that's why it is a steal for only $78.

TomTom XL 350TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition) Review

TomTom XL 350TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic and Maps Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
****Update****
I changed my review of this GPS from five stars down to three stars for a few different reasons and I ended up taking the GPS unit back to the place I purchased it from (it was very hard to walk away from the $129 sale price) and purchased the TomTom XL340 TM.
The main reason I traded this unit in for a new one was the user interface. I completely understand that TomTom wants to create a simple user interface geared towards the 80% of people who want a simple and easy to understand GPS unit. On this, the XL 350 TM performs exceptionally well. However, if you want to really customize the GPS to do things for you, then you are out of luck because you cannot update very manypreferences in the unit. I like to tinker with the GPS unit and in the end I want ultimate control over what is on the screen and what information I can or cannot get. The 350 TM does not give you ANY leeway to set up the GPS in the exact way you want. If you see the words "Easy Menu" on the box and you like to have control over everything the GPS displays then the unit will not be for you. If you want simple and easy-to-understand-out-of-the-box performance, then this GPS will work fine.
The XL 340TM GPS uses the old menu system from TomTom. I ended up paying $60 more for this GPS but it was important to me to be able to customize the menu system. This unit also has lifetime maps and traffic and this was my main reason for buying a new GPS. Instead of two options on the main screen, I have ten. Under the preferences menu this unit lets me check seven different boxes under the Safety Preferences menu. Additionally there are two other sub-screens under this that let me set when I am driving on the wrong side of the road and to choose if I ever want the map display shut off. I can also change the information displayed on the status bar and on the 350 I could not. There was no compass function that I could see on the 350 that is available here. It also lets me set up different information on the Quick Menu preferences and this option was not available on the 350 at all. It also lets me check off about 15 different items under planning preferences including things like avoiding toll roads, avoiding ferries, plan routes by fastest times, shortest routes, avoiding freeways etc. Under Advanced Preferences it lets you select options like displaying street names, house numbers before street names, lane images etc. You can also prepare routes on this unit and also build an itinerary including waypoints.
I also sent an email to the TomTom support team asking if there was anyway I could get and use the old menu system they used and was told that is was not possible. The problem with this response? It took TomTom over a week to answer my question. That seems like a very long response time and is another reason I took one more star off of my rating.
Overall the 350 was a nice unit and easy to use, it simply did not allow me to customize the GPS like I wanted to.
*****Update over*****
I travel a lot for my job and have used an older model Mio GPS unit to get me to my destinations. The Mio worked fine for the most part, but the last time I went to a new city the maps were very old and out of date. I decided it was time to upgrade to a new GPS unit and researched Garmin and TomToms because they are the two biggest players in the market. In the end, the lifetime traffic and lifetime map upgrades pushed me towards the TomTom XL 350 TM, a model that just came out at the end of May 2010.
In my research for a new GPS it seems that people either liked Garmin or the TomTom because of the interface. People usually had a strong bias for one or the other. The interface did not matter to me as much as what I could get for my money. I seriously looked at the Garmin nuvi 780 because this is a top-of-the-line Garmin, albeit a discontinued model, and Amazon is selling it for 74% off the original price. For the money it seemed like a fantastic deal except for two things. This unit uses MSN Direct content for traffic and you have to pay a subscription fee after the trial period ends, and MSN is discontinuing this service at the beginning of 2011. This unit did not include lifetime updated maps, which is a big deal for someone buying a new GPS unit simply because the old one had maps in it that are getting obsolete.
Since lifetime maps were very important to me (without having to shell out $100 more for the upgrade) my choices were suddenly locked in on TomTom units. I researched their products and decided I was either going to get the XL 540 TM (the TM is lifetime traffic and maps) or the same unit but with a smaller screen size, the XL 340 TM. I decided I was going to go for the one with the 4.3" wide screen, the XL 340 TM, instead of the bigger 5" screen because I read that the 5" screen is cumbersome for the window mount to handle.
Well the best laid plans sometimes go astray because when I went into Best Buy they had the brand new XL 350 TM on sale for $169.99 when the regular price was $229.99. I bought the unit immediately beacuse I figured the unit was very similar if not an improvement over the XL 340 TM.
Here are my first impressions after using the TomTom XL 350 TM for two days.
1.The design is sleek with a crisp and clear screen. My old Mio looks like a clunky old refrigerator compared to the new TomTom.
2.I wish TomTom had an external memory card on these units. I have read people have had problem updating maps because they have run out of room on the unit. Since I read about it, I was expecting it, and ended up backing up my unit and then deleting the French and the Spanish language functions to free up space. This freed up about 30 mb on a 2 gb flash drive. TomTom could fix this issue by simply making the maps of Canada, the United States and Mexico separate. Anyway, the fix of deleting the French and Spanish speaking files worked well.
3.The instructions are very skimpy in the box. There are basically no instructions on how to set up and install the new software on the device. This was not a big deal for me because I researched the hell out of it, but for someone like my mom this would be a killer. I connected the device to my computer and found the setup program on the device and ran it.
4.When you first plug the unit into the computer it takes an hour and a half to download the new maps and the GPS fix software. After it downloads all the software it needs, then you install the TomTom Home software. This is not really installed on your machine, but rather it is an account set up on a web site and the software seems to reside there.
5.Once you install the Home software or set up an account, the icons in TomTom Home are very easy to understand and use. I performed a backup of my unit and then I deleted the Spanish and French language files from the unit. If TomTom would ever install Mexico, Canada and the United States separately then space would not be an issue because most sane people would never rent a car or drive in Mexico unless you lived there, and then if you did liver in Mexico you most likely would not need maps of Canada. This is a very small issue but one that could be fixed with minimal issues.
6.Once you perform the backup and delete you install the software upgrade to the TomTom. This did not take long at all, maybe 15 minutes.
7.The window unit is very different from the Mio. I like the looks of it because it looks elegant. It is a little awkward to use at first, but after you get used to it then it works as designed. My Mio had a linchpin system to hold the unit to the window unit and over time I lost the linchpin so the design there wasn't perfect. This design is like a hip joint, a ball in the socket, and although it moves stiff (I bet in order to keep the GPS unit still) it functions well and had no problems holding the unit on the window or dash. It is easy to unsnap the unit from the wondow mounting device so you can take the GPS unit with you instead of leaving it in the car.
8.The user interface on the GPS unit is simple and easy to use. It is very intuitive and when you fist turn it on there are pop-up balloons there to help guide you through the process. By playing around with it for a bit I became very adept at doing what I needed to get done for the GPS unit to function.
9.I like the graphics on this unit. The GPS fired up and found a signal within seconds (my old unit took up to a minute or so to lock onto a satellite). I typed in the address of where I wanted to go, it plotted a route for me, and I hit the done button to get the 3-D view map on the screen. From there it is easy because you follow the prompts. The section on the bottom of the screen tells you which way your next turn will be(left or right) and it tells you how far away from the turn you are at the moment. This unit is accurate to within 5 feet or so of where my car was so it would be very hard to miss a turn. My old unit was only locked in from about 20 yards, which caused problems sometimes when I was on a freeway and passed my exit going 70.
10.I have not been able to get lane assist to work yet (I only drove local routes). This is part of the reason I bought this unit. From the pictures on other reviews it looks great.
11.I have no clue on how the routing is compared to my old unit yet. I will get a better judge of this over time. I like it a lot so far.
12.The screen is absolutely bright enough to see in the daytime. The sound is loud enough to hear the spoken street names and directions.Overall I highly recommend this unit. If anything changes in the next few months I will come in and update my review.

Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Maps and Traffic Review

Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Maps and Traffic

Warning to everyone, Magellan has just switched over to TELE ATLAS maps and no longer with NAVTEQ as of October 2010. I bought a second 3045 LM unit: the first 3045-LM had NAVTEQ (bought one month ago in September) and the second unit bought 2 days ago had TELE ATLAS. I ran the 2 units side by side and there was a huge difference in routing. The TELE ATLAS unit had terrible routing: it would take me on some insane routes that made no sense that were often circuitous and long. The NAVTEQ unit on the other hand had perfect routing. In addition, there was no true re-routing on the TELE ATLAS unit: it would try to force me to take a U-turn. The NAVTEQ unit would re-route perfectly. To sum up, I would avoid buying any new Magellan units as the latest 5045's (and 3045's) now use TELE ATLAS maps and the routing is terrible compared to the previous 5045's (and 3045's) manufactured a month ago, which have NAVTEQ maps. All the 5045's are not the same: the ones manufactured within the past several weeks have the TELE ATLAS Maps and terrible routing but the 5045's manufactured one month or so ago have NAVTEQ maps which have excellent routing. You should call customer service to confirm that Magellan is now using Tele Atlas and complain, as anyone who bought LIFETIME maps will be affected. I had just converted over from Garmin and was very happy with the Magellan NAVTEQ unit, but the newest Magellan units all have TELE ATLAS and have terribly inept routing. When reading through these reviews, I caution everyone to be mindful as to when the unit was manufactured: a rave review may be referring to a NAVTEQ unit that was manufactured one month ago as opposed to the new TELE ATLAS unit that was manufactured more recently.
In order to see if you have a TeleAtlas versus NAVTEQ unit, Go to Menu, then hit the "tools" button, scroll down to "Product Information", then you will see "Base Map Version 41", which will indicate that this is TeleAtlas. The Navteq version of the 5045/3045/3055/3065 units will have "Base Map Version 39"
ADDENDUM 10/30/10
i just wanted to alert amazon for suspicion of fake reviews on the Magellan 5045 gps. I wrote a 1 star review exposing the fact that Magellan made a major switch mid-model cycle to Tele Atlas Maps from Navteq maps, and subsequently, the map routing has taken a major turn for the worse. I find it odd that from June 2010 to October 28, there were only 26 reviews. The day after I write a one star review, all of a sudden...concidentally...27 more reviews pop up in 3 days between October 29th and 31st, most of which are lauding it with 4-5 stars (and most of them written by people who have never written a review before). I find it suspicous and wonder if these are fake 5 star reviews written by Magellan in order to "bury" my one star review. It's just odd that only 26 reviews were written in 5 months and then after my 1 star review was written, 27 more reviews (mostly 5 star) suddenly appeared.
You may see a full discussion of Magellan's unexpected move to TeleAtlas maps at the gpspassion.com forum. The news is posted on their front page news:

TomTom XL 335S 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom XL 335S 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I move to the Dallas/Fort Worth area at the start of 2010 and I found out the hard way that I really needed lane assist on my GPS. I was frustrated with the Garmin I had, which was an older model and it needed a map update. So I needed a GPS that had lane assist and found this one with life time map update and traffic. I had only used a Garmin so I wanted to try a Tom Tom out and the XL 335TM wasn't on the market yet. So I went and bought a 340 to use in the mean time. I found the maps more accurate with the Tom Tom. I could start entering my destination while still in my apartment complex setting still. When I done this on the Garmin it thought I was on the near by interstate. It kept saying recalculating when I would get out onto the freeway. I used the 340 for 13 days since that was as long as I could before I couldn't return it for a full refund. I then went and tried out a Magellen with a 7 inch screen. The unit was so heavy it kept falling off the windshield. The maps was the same as the Garmin, couldn't enter my destination while setting in my apartment complex. Only the Tom Tom had the streets of the apartment complex in its maps. Then I quickly returned the Magellen, which I did not like. The Magellen couldn't find some addresses and wouldn't even let you enter them. However, once you got to the place it would show the address correctly. I also tried a new Garmin which didn't correct the situation of knowing I was at my apartment complex and not on the near by interstate. I was able to try all three major brands and I can tell you I am so please with the Tom Tom which has by my opinion the BEST MAPS. The unit came with the traffic interface cord and the IQ maps works great in the DFW area. It will route you around the heavy traffic and get you to the destinations quicker. Sometime I have to go out in the middle of the night, it will take you on the interstate and most direct route, but during the day it will take you to a different route but get you there faster then the interstate. I like that. If you ever think you will be in a large metroplex area even once let me advise you to get a GPS with lane assist. You will have to glance up at the unit to see in the lower left hand corner what highlighted lane you need to be in. You can't always depend on what it is saying. Also it will let you know if you are going too fast in the lower right hand corner. The basic operation is a little different then the Garmin and the Magellen, but now that I am use to it I like it better. It is a lot easier to find as designation with zip code and I am used to a QWERTY keyboard layout which is the default setting. One other thing I might add is that you have to use the USB cable that came with the unit to update it. The cable that came with my camera would fit, but kept saying the Tom Tom was unknown device. At first I thought it was the Tom Tom unit itself after the first update, but I was using the wrong cable. Also the Tom Tom servers that update the software with have a slow connection. The update took almost an hour even with my fast 12 mbps connection speed. When picking a GPS unit you really have to ask yourself what features you want. I recommend the lane assist feature in this GPS unit. It has saved me a lot of wrong turns.

Garmin nuvi 255 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map Updates Review

Garmin nuvi 255 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map Updates
Average Reviews:

We ordered this unit because it is listed as having lifetime map updates. It does not. One came with no authorization code or card, so we contacted amazon who directed us to garmin. Garmin does not bundle its products (it says) and sent us back to amazon. Amazon promptly sent out another gps, again, having the label saying it included lifetime maps. Nothing in the box but the gps and its accessories.
It's a great gps, but there's no reason to pay $40 extra for nothing.

Garmin nüvi 1300LM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map Updates Review

Garmin nüvi 1300LM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map Updates
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So far, I like the Garmin nuvi 1300LM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator.
I'm a newbie to the GPS world. As a local professional truck driver, I finally decided instead of purchasing maps for areas I'm unfamilar with, I'd spring for a GPS unit.
Why a Garmin? Well, I narrowed it down to between a Garmin and a TomTom. I actually was leaning towards the TomTom XXL 540TM 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition) until I learned that the Garmin units do a much better job at finding addresses the likes of N1234 W9876 Booneyville Rd. There are GPS units available for truckers, however, the price tag is a bit north of my budget. Since I'm generally familiar with the roads I travel on, I decided to stick with a lower-priced model and download POI's (Points-of-Interest) associated with the trucking community such as low bridges, truck stops, etc. The lifetime maps bundled into this unit was the deal-maker for me. I plan on keeping this unit for a long time (got a 2-year accident replacement plan on it).
I purchased the unit yesterday and my family and I have used it for shopping purposes yesterday and today. We sure had a chuckle when we switched the unit's voice to German and tried to follow the directions. Anyway, here's the skinny on the 1300 LM.
20-seconds after switching the unit on, you're ready to choose either "Where to?" (getting/typing directions) or "View Map" (to see where you are). The touch screen is nice--it responds well to your touches. Of course, if you're not use to a touch screen (or have fat fingers), it may take a while for you to get comfortable with it. The screen is bright enough--even in direct sunlight (keep in mind that most screens wash out a bit in direct sunlight). You can manually control screen brightness or have the nuvi 1300LM adjust it automatically for you. Volume control in an automobile is more than adequate. We had the radio on mid-way and could still hear the text-to-speech instructions clearly at 80% of the volume.
Actual navigation was impressive. Then again, I'm new to the GPS world. The GPS navigation tried to steer us on a different route a few times (we knew the shorter route) but quickly recalculated the route after giving up on the route it wanted to take us (even though we had the "faster time" option selected). The 4.3-inch screen is fine for viewing. While a 5-inch screen would probably be beneficial for driving an 18-wheeler or RV, I'm sure I won't have any problems with the 4.3-inch screen.
After giving it a spin straight-out-of-the-box, I later downloaded both software updates and map updates at [...] using "myDashboard". I had 4-6 successive software updates (why can't they bundle them as one?) followed by a map update. The entire process took somewhere between 4-5 hours on a DSL line. Not a big deal since I knew it would take some time to get the latest updates. By the way, Garmin has included a mini-USB cord to connect the 1300LM to your computer. The sales technician sold me a cord (which I returned) because he wasn't aware that Garmin has decided to start including the cord with certain (or all) GPS units.
My family doesn't plan on using the cityXplorer feature (fee-based) to navigate various cities by foot. However, eventually, we like to tour Washington, DC by walking and the Nuvi 1300LM presumably would be handy to have for that trip.
In summary, if you don't need bluetooth in your GPS unit (I've heard volume levels are very iffy in GPS bluetooth units) and you don't rely on traffic updates a lot (traffic is a hit/miss type of thing with a GPS unit from what I can determine), the Garmin Nuvi 1300LM just may be the unit you're looking for.
If warranted, I'll update this post after I've used the 1300LM in my big-rig.

P.S. The Garmin Portable Friction Mount (bean-bag) works great. Keep in mind that the cord from your cigarette lighter plugs into the garmin unit itself rather than the mount. Over time, I can see how that connection could become compromised with repeated plug-in/plug-out action. However, the mount itself seems very stable in warm weather. I would guess it will also do fine in colder weather.
